  John Key says most voters do t worry about race. Well, perhaps Key doesn’t but I can tell him my community does and so does Willie Jackson’s. We both have quite different perspectives. He thinks I’m a racist because I don’t like racism; I think he’s an idiot because, among a whole heap of reasons, he thinks I’m a racist because I don’t like racism.       Rule of 78 (not 72) is an approximation, but an expedient way of calculating repayments involving compound interest in the days before feature rich calculators and spreadsheets. Rule of 78 has gone the way of the three brass balls.

        The Rule of 78 was used to calculate early settlement Penalties for Hire Purchase.
        It was very usurious and Finance Companies made a fortune out of it.

  House prices can’t double.
  
  There is an upper bound to house prices caused by wages. Once people are paying 99% of their income on housing repayments then the prices just cannot go up. OK, we are not at 99% (maybe) but we’re at the the point where it is close.
  
  The average salary in Auckland is around $80k. Even with two of those you really struggle to buy an average house.
  
  A doubling of house prices in 10 years would require at least doubling the average salary. I don’t see that happening any time soon.

      I suspect Asians easily outnumber Maori in NZ these days. Those figures quoted are from the dodgy 2018 census.
      
      There’s been no decent publication of the ethnic breakdown of our population since then.
      
      I also think that is why the Maori Caucus in Labour was so desperate to push through co-governance models for every facet of our lives.
      
      The fact is NZ is an increasingly multicultural nation and the bicultural meme needs to be consigned to history books.

        My Great Grandson (9 months) is 1/4096 Maori, when you take in the other sides of the bloodlines. He will still be paying for the last 6 years.
        I don’t think the future NZ Asians will be happy paying for something that is not of their doing.

  So the Maori Health authority will be dismantled as a separate organisation. Sounds like functions and staff will be folded into Health NZ and the Ministry of Health but no commitment to the same level of funding.
  
  Interesting to see what the Waitangi Tribunal comes up with if it does conduct a hearing in due course.
  
  Minister Reti -“ No matter how the health system is shaped, what’s important is how it functions. We need function over form, we need results over reports.”
  
  Reports are OK as long as they are focussed on targets and results. Sounds like a plan. The Auditor General agrees. Will the Waitangi Tribunal agree? Might need some verbal gymnastics.
  
  Hopefully the targets will also apply race based funding to providers like Maori Health Providers and the Health Research Council.

  Talk about an organization growing outside it’s initial intentions. The tribunal was set up to meditate treaty settlements. Nothing more. It was supposed to be a neutral body.
  
  With settlements ending they have morphed into a government fund Maori lobby group. Nact and Winston should shut them down entirely. If required they could setup entirely new group to meditate future settlements, if there are any.

      It is not unreasonable to expect that a health department dedicated to maori, or any other group , would give their highest priority to infants.
      
      She is aware of children being tortured and violently
      murdered, is it not reasonable to expect that children be assessed and monitored?
      
      As you imply Steve they pass the problems on to another department and give their own hands a good scrub with the ethical sanitiser.
      
      We should spare a thought for the infants and children currently being tortured in NZ.

  If the folks affiliated with the Waitangi Tribunal were so damned concerned about the disruption of 3 Waters & the Maori Health Authority, then they should have convinced their followers to vote Labour.
  
  But Labour lost most of their Maori seats and lost the election.
  
  And it wasn’t as if Nats/NZ First/Act hadn’t been clear about their intentions.

Well, we’ll all be able to sleep safer in our beds now that the British Film Censor has upgraded the 1964 classic movie ‘Mary Poppins’ from U, unrestricted viewing, to PG, parental guidance required. The reason? Twice the term ‘hottentot’ is used. To think of the generations of innocent children whose lives have been blighted and whose vision of the world contaminated by exposure to such vileness. Shame on Julie Andrews.

  No wonder a producer pulled a stunt on the film censor. The cost of a certificate depends on the classification, there being no charge for a U (G in NZ) certificate. Producer painted a wall then filmed the paint drying (about 10 hours). Producer then submitted it to the censor who had to watch it for 10 hours then had to issue a U certificate at no cost. Perhaps censor should have got creative and issued a X (adults only) certificate on the grounds it could induce mental illness in children.

The “ progressive ghouls “ that want to shape our childrens future don’t want their view of the world blighted by such wholesome far right extremism especially when the only black person portrayed in the movie is a chimney sweep. The whole movie is obviously a vehicle for white supremacy and heteronormativity and seeks to continue the patriarchal social order and marginalisation of oppressed minorities. A complete ban is not yet politically practical but working in conjunction with drag queen story time and Google’s new AI engine they’ll do their best. It won’t be long before a family movie from pre 2015 will be as rare as a white couple in a TV advert and this brave new world will banish injustice, hatred and nastiness forever.

  And hen there is Chippie’s lame replacement for his lame self as Education spokeswhatever. Last night, in response to news breaking that HER Government (and v. likely Chippie himself) had stuffed up funding for school upgrades by blaming THIS Government and saying ‘Well, they’ll cull the upgrades because they have tax cuts for their mates to fund. Erm, no, Ms Tinetti, this Government came into office with the (admittedly naive) idea that Labour had actually funded what it told schools it was proposing and that funding for tax cuts wouldn’t need to factor in Labour lies.

It was determined that he should announce it to the country.

They waited until he returned to Wellington the next day to make the announcement !

What was the priority ?
Informing the public ?
Or perhaps the optics of having the top doctor giving the bad news.

Stage management and narrative management were the priorities . Not us.

So we get two female Otago Uni academics this morning criticising government over repeal of smoking legislation which will result in the killing of thousands and the repeal of the Māori Health Authority which again will result in more deaths. Is there something in the water down there ? What’s worrying is these people are brainwashing our youngsters. Now Robertson is joining them and Baker and we are paying for these people.

  These academics should join forces with academics from other disciplines (marketing, psychology, political studies, economics, criminology etc) and come up with a comprehensive realistic proposal to reduce and ultimately eliminate smoking with as little collateral damage as possible.   Speaker Johnson invited Biden to give the State of the Union address, back in early January. The SOTU is scheduled for 7 March.
  
  There are always some politicians who want to act like yapping dogs instead of adults. Willie Jackson and Marama Davidson are good local examples.
  
  In this case a few MAGA GOP members are yapping that Biden shouldn’t be invited to give the SOTU. Similar yapping happened a couple of times in the Obama presidency, when some of the more extreme GOP members said he too shouldn’t be invited.
  
  But my advice is to filter out the yapping dogs and just listen to the adults in the room. My experience is that the only things that get excited about yapping dogs are other yapping dogs.

Why are Maori earlier deaths compared to “pakeha” deaths when East Asian communities attain considerably higher life spans than anyone else in New Zealand?

And if Maori originated from Asian stock before migrating east into the Pacific, then centuries later migrating back west to settle in New Zealand, what physical or social changes have occurred to so drastically lessen their lifespan compared to the average East Asian who gets off a plane in Auckland Airport this morning?

Is the lower range for Maori a genetic or environmental factor – physiological, psychological, life style and social status and behavioural?
And if genetic, what whakapapa (Maori intermarriage or mixed parentage) is a factor?
If a Maori person’s one grandparent or one parent is non-Maori, does that person have a higher life expectancy?

And, considering all factors, was Kiri Allan correctly advised she had a 13.3 percent chance of survival when diagnosed – and since her recovery, what of her reported lifestyle and choices leading up to the much publicised road-crash, are now perhaps conditions conducive to cancer or an early death?

  Simple, it’s because:
  1. They are more than twice as likely to smoke
  2. They are more than twice as likely to drink hazardously
  3. They are more than twice as likely to use methamphetamines
  4. They are more than averagely obese

    Paleolithic hunter gatherers having 10 kids that typically die violently don’t get significant advantage from grandma and grandpa being alive. They tend to mature and die at younger ages to take advantage of opportunities for spread that occur due to warfare and natural calamities.
    
    Cold climate subsistence farmers that mostly perish from famine and disease have less surplus resources to raise kids and have to plan and provision for long periods of privation (winter) and benefit more from skills and labor contributions of surviving grandparents. They tend to mature and die later and spread through slow grinding competitive economic advantage over their peers less mediated by violence, more by well planned industrious activity. Which is probably also why Northern Europeans, North East Asians and Mongolians tend to be highest average intelligence amongst the worlds ethnicities.

      Ahh and this is the crux of it!! The following thinking is pervasive through the health system. I regularly have a debate with an NGO provider who has the audacity to tell me that despite services being provided that WE ALL have access to. Maori have been on the receiving end of “institutional racism” over the years and have developed a deep mistrust of doctors both GP’s and Hospital and THIS is why their outcomes are poorer.
      Yep I go to my GP and he tells me stuff I do not want to hear ie “you need to lose weight” “eat healthier food” “exercise more” etc etc – Seriously instead of crying racism, when you hear that stuff you need to take personal responsibility for what happens next to your “outcomes”
      When Maori start taking self responsibility for their health outcomes seriously, I will start to listen if said outcomes don’t improve. Until then – shut up!!!

        It was depressing, but amongst the assertions of systematic racism being real & the fear of ACT & the Nats undoing so much good things for Maori was a comment about how one lady could understand a Maori reluctance to going to the GP, because their GP always bring up her weight, and she is overweight and she doesn’t like that.
        
        So – being told what you need to hear from you GP of all people is supposedly a bad thing, and we need race-focused services that tell you instead that you are perfect no matter what size you are, presumably.
        These people are morons.
        
        Yes – lifestyle, obesity and the related heart disease, cancers and diabetes etc. are what the Maori who claim to care about their people should look at firstly before a great many other things.

Are the stats based on real maori that look like your “traditional” Maori, are they based on them plus “white” Maori, are they based on maori that are 50% or more maori, 30%, 15% etc. Also, for a while there media were items began with “Maori are disproportionately affected by … “. After a while saying this too much becomes a tool of oppression. As a Maori you’d start to believe that I’m hopeless if that’s all you’re seeing it being told all the time.

  Just as astronomers can deduce the presence of an unseen planet based on the observable effects it has on another visible body, so too we can deduce a great deal about the political dynamic by making inferences based on what can be seen.
  
  Incidentally, the US soldier who publicly self-immolated in front of the Israeli Embassy in Washington DC has mostly been buried in the western media (likely because it could decrease US public support for Israel, which the later depends upon), while, if a Russian or Chinese soldier had done the same extreme act of protest in front of a Russian or Chinese official site, the act would be endlessly celebrated in western media as an act of virtuous martyrdom in the face of evil. Imagine, even, if it were an Arab protesting Hamas: that would be Jewish propaganda gold!

    And a question – where did all the Palestinian flags come from all of the sudden?

    Possibly you are right, but possibly there are explanations alternative to your monomania.
    
    Perhaps the greater focus on Islamic atrocities in Israel rather than in the Sahel reflects the greater potential of such actions for massive destablisation of the region, high intensity wars, disruption of oil supplies, great power rivalries, which potentially more affect people in the west.
    
    Perhaps it reflects the long-standing greater interest of first world countries in other first world countries’ affairs, rather than in the third world.

  It always looks off to me, when people wear a nephrite carving outside their clothes, and especially when they are non-Maori. Look at Me!

Random thought.

Walking to work in Christchurch CBD and noticed that every traffic light pole had a nice sticker at the base with the warning “LIVE WIRES”. I would have thought that it might be reasonably obvious things that run on electricity, you know like traffic lights, would need electrical supply so would therefore have, erm, live wires.

Sensible low-cost Health & Safety? Health & Safety gone mad? Or a sign of how incredibly stupid the average person now is that we now need signs telling them not to cut the wires that supply the power to those shiny things that tell the traffic to stop & go? Possibly all of the above?

Maori grifters and race-baiters all moan and groan in unison at the idea that their plans for a lucrative (for them) ethnostate is dissolving before their eyes at the hands of their political opponents:

I am utterly and completely convinced this separatist agenda from the likes of Jackson, O’Donnell and Morgan has bad intentions that have little to do with Maori outcomes – and I think there’s one simple test that proves it.

Let’s say that separate Maori health systems (or education, or justice, or social support etc) were in place for twenty years and, irrespective of the efforts of successive governments the actual outcomes for Maori were the same or poorer for Maori than Maori in the mainstream systems.

Billions have been poured in, countless strategies and delivery models have been tried, reviews after reviews have been conducted and still the outcomes are poor – and costing taxpayers hugely more per person or per treatment than the mainstream.

(Meanwhile the Maori service providers, the Tamiheres, the Jacksons etc) in on it are creaming it.)

When challenged about this chronic under-performance and underachievement what do you think the Jacksons et al is more likely to say:

1. “We just need to give it more time, we need to stay the course. These things take time. And of course we need to address the underfunding. We are not investing enough. We need to spend more.”

Or,

2. “We need to face up to it. It hasn’t worked. We thought this was the answer but plainly we were wrong. The causes of underachievement clearly are not being addressed by these separate systems and I’m sorry we’ve wasted billions of New Zealander’s dollars to find that out. More importantly, we need to get our people back into the mainstream system where we’ll all be better off.”

I argue that as certain as the Sun rising in the morning you will never, ever hear Jackson, Waititi etc say number 2. Never, ever, ever – even though it is recognised as true by most other New Zealanders.

And here’s the key point. If they really cared about Maori outcomes Jackson and Waititi and O’Donnell etc should be quick to admit separatism isn’t working and call for a rollback.

But of course it’s not the outcomes that are the prize. It’s the separatism itself that is the prize. And even if actual outcomes are worse, that matters not. What matters is the preservation of the main prize – separate systems that they can benefit from; politically, financially and in terms of direct power and control.

This is why, I firmly believe, you never, ever hear co-governance proponents talking in terms of specific, measurable benefits – or specific, measurable improvements in outcomes.

You only hear vague, non-specific, general claims of “under co-governance things will be better….” but never do you hear any answers to the basic question “Better by what measure?”

They can’t answer it and won’t answer it. Doing so would require them to set some targets and be accountable – and that’s the last thing they want to do. That is their Achilles heel and one which they’ll attempt to avoid at all costs.

Remember, it’s the separatism and the subsequent cash, power and control that is the prize, better outcomes for Maori is just the stalking horse.

The illusory carrot.

Couple flies business premium from New York to Auckland, paying US$23,407 for the tickets.

They did not buy travel insurance.

After getting FREE gallstones surgery in Christchurch, and discovering a cancerous tumour they are complaining that air NZ didn’t give them a free change to return early.

What. The. Fuck.

1. I had gallbladder removed a few years ago, it cost around $10,000 nz. What are we doing giving for free to this person when we can’t even supply enough operations for our own people
2. What kind of person spends $50,000 NZD on airfares, doesn’t buy travel insurance and then moans about it.
3. Then air nz CAVES and refunds them!

    No mention of paying for anything to do with the surgery. Generally the nz health system does not have the processes to charge for people that present at hospital. That’s why ED is usually over crowded with people who could be dealt with by their gp.
    
    A change fee is different to a fare difference. For example I flew back from Europe in January. This included a domestic flight between Christchurch and wellington. I had bought “flexi-change” tickets. When my international flight was delayed I had to change that leg.
    Flexi change has “no change fee” but it still cost me over $200 to move the booking from a Friday to the following Monday. Maybe I should have whine about how there was a storm in Europe that wasn’t expected.
    
    Maybe you should get some real world experience.
