When will Labour, the Media and Journalists come to the conclusion that it’s their fault that Newshub are about to fold, they can’t see that it’s them that had to change their ways to make the public supporters instead of enemies and bring back the the publics view on how they inform the public on many topics especially politics on a daily basis.
The media are biggots and instead of informing those that want to hear the truth on what’s going on, they give their own view and create a hate for themselves because people believe they are biased in their view which is hard to deny because of their attitude towards the public.
I will show my bias here by saying it’s their own fault any have lost their jobs and I have no sympathy for them as they thought they were untouchable or she’s right the Government will bail us out, but boy did they make a mistake.

I write this a someone who used to spend around $500,000 a year on advertising in the MSM. I now spend zero in the MSM.

Watching the MSM have a meltdown shows me:

They have tried to shovel their activism down our throats and by doing so they have alienated their readers/viewer but seem to be genuinely unaware of this fact.

They lack any self awareness of how bad their products is.

To the media. This is a self inflicted own goal.

As an advertiser – you didn’t listen to me. You know – the one paying for advertising. I now spend my money where my customers are.

And they ain’t in the MSM.

THAT is why you are going broke.

  Yes they do listen to the people that hold the purse strings.
  
  When they were getting our money (thanks Cindy), they were listening to her.
  
  But in doing so they alienated everyone else. Now that the Cindy trough has dried up they all fail.
  
  I think there was (and still is) some arrogance in the MSM believing they had (and to an extent still have) a monopoly on communication, news, etc. and that they were in control. They failed to adapt to the new world with internet and a far more level playing field.
  
  Never mind, those that can’t adapt will fade away…

    Yup. The countless millions spent on government propaganda, branding and promotion prevented Newshub from holding the government to account.   As I continue to monitor the fall out from one pillar of the MSM crumbling to dust, I clicked on the ‘Stuff’ website to be met with an immediate appeal for a donation. Main header: ‘Support Stuffs mission to make Aotearoa a better place’. Supporting statement: ‘Your contribution will help power our journalism, so we can have an even bigger impact in Kiwi communities.’
  They want either $20 a month or $200 a year out of me.
  I might support a media company intent on delivering news to New Zealanders, but I won’t support a bunch of woke activists intent on a campaign of information manipulation and ‘social justice’ propagandising in a mythical place called Aotearoa.
  The fact that ‘Stuff’ imagine themselves to be on some grandiose country-shaping mission shows that the organisation and the people within it have lost touch with reality. It’s shades of Don Quixote and his equally futile crusade.
  Maybe their target market of idealistic youth, leftist academics, wokesters, Maori, and and rusted-on Labourites will deluge them with much needed cash, but I sincerely doubt it.

    Back in the 90s, when it turned up on your driveway wrapped in plastic, I subscribed to the Press. I was still wet behind the ears, but a morning read of the paper was already an ingrained habit, like watching the news on telly at 6pm. The Press was a respectable publication in those days. But over the years it got thinner and thinner (and smaller, with the change to tabloid format) and the content grew weaker, while the price increased over and over until I eventually decided I was being insulted on several levels and gave them a DCM.
    
    Like a frog in a pot I continued to read Stuff until a few years ago when it finally dawned on me that I was being slowly boiled by all the Maorification bullshit and wokeness. I have all but given up even looking at the site, and I’ve communicated to them on many occasions that they won’t get a single cent from me until they revert to being a balanced, respectable source of genuine news. But given that most of their content appears to be regurgitated from social media by know-all 20-year-old girls with a basic journalism certificate from polytech and no sub-editing oversight, a 50-year-old pale male like me might as well bark at the moon.
    
    Has the fate of Newshub sent them a strong enough message? I think it unlikely. They simply don’t have the self-awareness or introspection to see that they’ve all sown the seeds of their own destruction.

      I was so blessed c2004 when The Press declined to deliver to the bottom of my steep drive off a narrow shingle road and offered to leave their daily missive another Km further away. The benefits of that change were immediate and substantial.
      Nearly two decades, think of the money saved and the mental health advantages.

    Damo – If Stuff bothered to get some honest feedback from the public they would probably be shocked to find that the majority of New Zealanders do not want to change the country’s name to Aotearoa. They have no connection with the public what-so-ever.

  I personally didn’t care for what they were saying as long as they could attract viewers (eg our potential customers) but they couldn’t, and the most amazing thing was “they never asked themselves why?” Didn’t they look around the world at the retention of the audiences for a non-left message, and think perhaps we could try that???
  
  It amazes me on how stupid they were, the answer was staring them in the face. If their marketing research told them otherwise then they should be suing them.

closure of Newshub: an idiotic I’ll-informed attempt to make us all feel like the nation is breaking up with its wife of 30 years.

How arrogant of the newshub lovelies to deckare with moist eyes that their closure is a threat to democracy in New Zealand.

This is indicative of their silo thinking, that we don’t have dozens of new and exciting platforms where we already hoover up our news in a more balanced informed and in-depth way than they ever did. They state on nationwide TV that there is now only one media outlets in New Zealand because Newshub’s failure. illustrates their lack of awareness even in their own industry.

I haven’t watched New Zealand news for years. like many intelligent peers, we went to better sources a long time ago that are economically sustainable and deliver the product we want. Newshub was simply TVNZ in jandals and a Hawaiian shirt (same news same Leftist bs propaganda). Bye bye.

  The demise of NewsHub appears to be due to two factors. First of all the changing media landscape. Gone are the days when TV1 and TV3 news were watched by much of New Zealand. Now there are so many news channels online and so much choice that audience numbers and profitability were always going to take a hit.
  
  The second reason is that News Hub, and also TV1 news, have taken it on themselves to promote a particular narrative that totally shapes the way they report the news. News reporting must fit into the narrative rather than the old-fashioned journalism which at least tried to be objective. This has eroded public trust.
  
  Here is a list of some of the most egregious examples of the narrative:
  – Donald Trump is a horrible person and totally unfit to be president of the United States. During his four years as president he did not do a single good thing according to our TV news “journalists”.
  – Jacinda Adern is a wonderful person and people who don’t like her are probably misogynists.
  – Jacinda made a captain’s call to stop all future oil and gas exploration. This was totally justifiable and need no further comment.
  – Lockdowns were essential to combat covid. Furthermore the jab is totally safe and anyone who doesn’t believe this is a conspiracy theorist.
  – The trans-movement should never be questioned and anyone who does has an irrational phobia.
  – Climate change is an imminent threat to the world and we will not give a platform to anyone who thinks differently.
  – Maori culture is wonderful but New Zealand is a deeply racist country. There is no limit to what we should do to overturn our existing oppressive colonial structures.
  – Women are oppressed by the patriarchy and the more women in positions of power and senior management the better.
  
  I could go on and on. But you get the gist. 😊

    That list is pretty good. An example is Jill Ovens established the women’s rights party to combat child sterilization and men in women’s sport and so on. No amount of pleading could get one mention by MSM that her party existed. Because they loathe her message. But look at the message, it is heavily supported in polling.
    The rainbow tick and DEI have emasculated these organisations, despite being run by young women. Good riddance.

    Did you note Tova O’Brien’s plaintive cry on Stuff this morning: “I don’t want to imagine New Zealand without Newshub”?

    I would be surprised if even 20% of the population knew that Three news was going down the gurgle

      I would suggest that Democracy will gain much fresh air with the demise of Newshub.
      I was surprised at the number of people employed by Newshub – was it 300? who are loosing their jobs. For what it’s worth, I would have thought that what we got from Newshub could be done, with modern technology, by 60 – 100 people. A lot of grifters employed there I would suspect.

        I will be contriversial here and say that I am sad that News Hub is going. They were, IMHO, far better then TV1. I regurlarly watched the AM show (which I dont really regard as news) but it is going. I will not be switching to TV1s breakfast show, which is just foul.
        
        Part of Newshubs issue is that their primary competitor is government owned. TVNZ has no need to turn a profit and can, and does, got to the govt for funding.
        
        Would rather have seen Stuff go first.

      Yes, there were ?s about the “facts” reported, especially those sourced from the mainstream USA networks; however, we did have access to a variety of other credible & alternative view sources even then, albeit not as extensive as the internet enables (nor the influencers, fakes, guys hiding in mums basement…etc)

  They just report on what is happening in English instead of just screeching about politics.
  
  Australian weather: detailed anysis and forecast with no panic about it being in the 30s.
  
  New Zealand weather: two tins of cocoa, one tin of tea. It’s 24 degrees and you are all going to melt.
  
  Good bye newshub. I take heart from refusing to click their site and knowing that maybe that contributed in some small way to the downfall!
  
  Hopefully tvnz news will be next.
  
  Understand this, media. We want news and information. Unbiased presenters who report facts not feelings.

    We were in Oz last November and had the exact same thought. Before then I couldn’t tell you the last time not only my Wife and I sat down to watch a full hour news block but had our 3 teen daughters join us and engage in discussion around the topics covered.
    
    It was a frightening realization of just how far the legacy media has deteriorated in New Zealand.

  The only surprise for many I believe is that they got away with producing nonsensical output and extremely weak journalism for so long.
  
  It was a series of overpaid “attractive” sock puppets and nodding heads reading teleprompters. Their “reporters” were blatantly one sided, leftist sycophants.
  
  I understand that most people will have biases, but as a reporter/journalist you need to at least make an effort to appear impartial. There is nobody in NZ mainstream media who does that. To a man they are leftist, borderline Marxist propagandists.

  A falling tide lowers all boats, and maybe the challenges faced by broadcasters and journalists in this modern environment were insurmountable for Newshub. Maybe. But they did not provide an alternate to the left wing bias on offer at TVNZ and RNZ. They never tried that. Was that because of the political leanings of the overseas owners, local bosses or the journalists themselves? My guess is all three 😉
  They have only rarely been critical of the worst PM and government in our history over the last 6 years, and then turn round and spit bile and vitriol at the incoming government from the start. They are a far cry from the neutral and independent 4th estate required to hold power to account in a democracy. I think our democracy has a better chance of surviving without them.
  Personally, I used to be someone who used to read the Dominion paper on the train into work and watch the 6pm news every night in my 20s. Nowadays if I watch the news it is because I am already aware something of interest has happened. I watch 3 because it is slightly better than TVNZ, but never make it through a full bulletin. I find the left wing bias repugnant and have no interest in learning te reo.

    – Not wanting to learn standardised Te Reo is racist.

  The total reality is that advertisers look for ratings before they part out their cash. If a programme doesn’t rate – in other words if it does not attract viewers, listeners or readers – then advertising falls away. If a media outlet constantly peddles opinion masquerading as news and if that opinion is not supported by the majority, then the business will fail. While some will say otherwise, I’d say “go woke, go broke” has a lot to do with the failing ratings. I will not miss NewsHub and its now just a question of how soon Minister Lee sorts out the governance of TVNZ and Red Radio so that both of these entities have impartiality at their core rather than the biased crap they currently peddle.

  In have just read yesterdays GD on Auckland house prices. A couple of factual examples.
  
  1. My Dad bought a section in Mt Roskill when he returned from WW2 for 100 Pounds. He built a 100 sq m brick and tile house on it for around 2000 pounds. the property is now valued at $1.5M.
  
  2. In 1979 my wife and I bought the house we still live in in Browns Bay for $50K. 250M brick and tile. Current value $1.75M.
  
  Our house has more than doubled over each decade since we bought it. Its called supply and demand. I have no doubt Auckland prices will double over the next 10 years as Government have to keep importing people to keep growing the economy expecially as natural increase is less than deaths.

    In 1979 the average weekly wage was around $160. $8k a year. Your $50k house was around 6 average salaries.
    
    At $1.75M, your salary would need to be almost $300k a year to be 6 years of salary. The average salary is perhaps $90k in Auckland, so you’re at about 20 salaries.
    
    Needing 20 salaries to buy a house is beyond ridiculous.
    
    Doubling? How is that going to work without salaries at least doubling in the same time?

        Because property prices used to be a lower % of people’s salaries, so an increase is possible.
        
        If buying a house costs 1 year’s salary then doubling the price to 2 year’s salary is not such a big deal.
        
        But when a house costs 20 years’ salary then doubling it is preposterous.
        
        When a house costs 20 salaries then we’re talking about couples both working their entire lives and still not paying back their mortgage before they retire.
        
        The idea that prices can just keep doubling in real terms is fundamentally broken.
        
        When I got into the property market in Christchurch in 2000, we bought a place for $190k or so. At the time I was earning around $70k, so 2.5 years salary.
        
        We sold it in 2013 for $450k or so. If I had still been an employee, I would have been earning around $110k. – so 4 years salaries.

      cmm: Excellent point. Given that I once considered becoming a teacher – can you believe it? I was interested in their salaries vs. house prices in Gisborne in 1975.
      
      In short, in 1975 you could buy a modest three bedroom house in Gisborne for about $12,000, which was ONE year of a teacher’s salary. Teachers may have been better paid way back then – I can’t remember if that was the case.

        DG things moved in Gisborne then because at the end of November 1977 we paid $43,000 for a modest 3 bedroomed house in Albert Street, Te Hapara.
        
        In April 1982 when we transferred out of Gisborne we sold it for $48,000.

      The type of houses has changed exponentially. My first house was a weatherboard structure with no insulation whatsoever, and of course single glazed windows. It was two bedrooms, one bathroom, and incredibly the kitchen, dining area and “wash house” were all in one room. No paths, fences, garage or driveway. This was not unusual and pretty much the same as all my contemporaries.
      Today’s houses are built to much higher standards, and as far as I can see from what the younger nieces, nephews, friends have built include two bathrooms, attached garages, and even such luxuries as Media Rooms or an office.
      Of course they’re going to be more expensive.

        I wondered why it was so cold and damp
        We pulled off the gib board, added building paper and insulation, replaced all the windows with double glazed, squirted foam in the gaps, blah blah and now it’s warm and quiet
        Back in the old days they’d whack up a house in five minutes because they were so basic. All the drawings could be done on one sheet with another one for the drainage on linen in ink for basic houses.

    1979 I started from scratch in a new Beazley subdivision. Did not like their house designs so settled on a Dempsey-Morton which was also under the Fletcher Group. Cost was $39,000.
    Now 45 years later it is at $1.45M.

    Supply and demand is the first rule of economics — in the short term.
    Averages of times salary are skewed due to the baby boomer population bulge. Rather, let’s take an example of a 25 year old man forty years ago. Three things working in harmony to increase his house happiness.
    
    1. Income increases due to inflation. – Mortgage payments quickly reduced as a proportion of his nominal income.
    2. Income increases due to promotion. – Mortgage payments reduced as a proportion of his salary when he worked his way up the job ladder.
    3. Interest rate declined during this entire time, further reducing his actual payments.
    
    What of today’s 25 year old man?
    1. Prefers to rent rather than live in a “d0-up” or an undesirable suburb so delays buying a house until his income is nearing peak career at 35.
    2. Inflation is subdued, but 5-6 % is not nothing. Doubling over 15 years.
    3. Interest rates will decrease. Halving current interest rates will double the amount people can borrow.
    
    So I would rate a doubling possible, maybe probable but not highly likely. Working against the likelihood is that the next 10-15 years will see most of the baby boomers exit the property market (one way or another). Supply and demand rides again.
    
    Data I like…
    The metric that stays relatively constant is the proportion of income a borrower must pay for a new loan. People will always borrow to the max for the best house they can afford.

    Everybody imagines the world is just going to keep on as usual, that past trends predict future. Well normally that is true. But these are not normal times.
    
    Advent of AI in next 2-10 years (the Singularity) will disrupt all the assumptions about how society functions:
    – A shit load of people will be put out of work by AI starting with a lot of female dominated desk-work professions (and it will only increase), wages/salaries for most professions will collapse as there are too many competing for too few jobs or because of AI/automation undercutting them.
    -Education will become pointless with no benefit for effort and no realistic means to better your lot, meaning and hope will disappear from perhaps most people’s lives with no hierarchy to work at climbing, social ills will grow hugely (drugs, criminality etc)
    -Governments will go far left-high-tax property-thieving redistributionist (and inevitably despotically authoritarian like Venezuela. Cuba etc) powered by expanding unemployed voting base.
    -Living in expensive cities won’t be affordable or desirable for most. House prices will plummet and de-urbanization will become a major trend.

    If you’ve noticed, housing does not follow normal free market economic rules. This is because it is not a free market. Prices just keep going up and up and up. It’s actually socialism when the govt takes over property rights and determines how particular property may be used. It’s all intentional. It’s related to the ongoing fiat currency scam.     The CPI calculator only goes back to 1962. Assuming no or low inflaiton 1946 to 1962, that house your father bought post ware is $215,555 (general CPI) or 539,362 (housing CPI), so it has risen much more than CPI. One reason is post war, Mt Roskill was rural farm land and plenty available.
    $50k in Browns Bay in 1979 is 1,481,980 (housing CPI) or $336,625 (general CPI).
    Goes to show how much housing has gone nuts, and the impact of supply and demand (massive immigration)

So Chris Hipkins is having to convince people (especially his own MP’s) that he is still relevant after Winston Peters said he would be gone in a few weeks. Hence his fire and brimstone speech in the House yesterday in which he lambasted National for wanting to repeal Labour’s anti-smoking legislation (which has yet to come into force). As far as Casey Costello is concerned it would be just like water off a duck’s back.
Chris H should reflect on why after Labour’s overwhelming success in 2020 Labour was in no position to form a coalition government after the last election, the Left (with Winston) theoretically had the numbers but it was not going to happen. Chris H has rubbished the assertions from Casey and others that there was going to be collateral damage because of Labour’s legislation but never attempted to seriously argue how there would not be such issues with Labour’s legislation. I have been around long enough to realise that ‘brute force’ solutions just do not work. Prohibition – Chicago 1929 style being a prime example.

  They were missing in action on everything that was actually important, instead focused on fully endorsing and amplifying every utterance from Ardern and the ‘pulpit of truth’. That and petty sniping at anything perceived as a mistake from the opposition. Zero impartiality.

    Worse than that, prior to the post March 15 legislation that firearm would have been prohibited for A-Cat licensed firearm holders and restricted to those with a E-cat license only which required a greater level of security and background checks.

  2 of them are public health professors, one of whom is notable for winning an Ig Nobel Prize for demonstrating that, on icy footpaths in wintertime, people slip and fall less often if they wear socks on the outside of their shoes. Another person is a dentist, all the way from India, accompanied by an “environmental health specialist”, whatever that is, who also appears to be from sunny India (not that I have any problem with them being from where they are – it’s just an observation, after all, we all have to come from somewhere). Yet another one is a foreign student calling from the USA and the remaining protester is a rheumatologist practising in the private hospital.
  A very representative group and rightly concerned as it is, since, in the words of one of the protester, Professor Alex Macmillan, “(…)it had been proved time and time again the most effective way to address Māori health inequality was to have a Māori health authority(…)”. The good professor then observes that “(…)They did this without waiting for the Waitangi Tribunal hearing that was going to be … [tomorrow], it feels incredibly undemocratic(…)”.
  Of course, I fully share her concerns, particularly about such an abuse of democratic process, which is not only racist but also contrary to the principles of Te Tiriti O Waitangi.

  This very recent notion that the NZ government is accountable and responsible for delivering ‘equity’ both for the general population and Maori specifically is just a godsend for those who wish massive state intervention in the lives of New Zealanders.
  
  (Of course the implication is that the government has always been accountable for delivering ‘equity’ but it’s just that we’ve only come to realise this recently – and in the case for Maori only once we’ve come to understand the Treaty ‘better’. Total nonsense of course).
  
  As with Ardern and Robertson’s ‘wellbeing’ budgets this is a hugely significant and giant leap towards NZ political parties just having total open license to involve themselves in any area of our lives they deem necessary, but more relevantly wherever they see political advantage to be gained.
  
  This move from, generally speaking, people themselves taking accountability for their own welfare, and the government taking care of a few things we do best as a group or just cannot do individually, to the situation where increasingly people look to political parties to deliver them good life outcomes and ‘wellbeing’ has passed largely unremarked upon in my view and deserves far more public scrutiny.
  
  I don’t however expect our general direction of travel to change. More and more of our countryfolk seem happy to clamour for more and more government intervention over more and more of our lives and our political parties are more than happy to promise it to them.
  
  I read a saying the other day that went along the lines of “unless we are prepared to accept imperfections in society we should be prepared to lose all our freedoms and liberties”.
  
  The point being that this constant look to government to iron out every wrinkle, every ‘disparity’, every ‘injustice’ will inevitably result in a massive state controlling every part of all our lives – but no doubt delivering on that very poorly.
  
  Eventually of course it will collapse under its own weight having proved unsustainable and driven us to economic failure and people throw it off in some sort of revolution.
  
  I saw Luxon talking about Newshub yesterday and saying along the lines of “Nothing to do with us – they need to innovate.’
  
  That was music to my ears and should be to many more New Zealanders – well those New Zealanders who believe poor struggling New Zealand families shouldn’t be taxed even more to fund massive multinational media organisations anyway.
  
  I only hope we hear much much more of it.

Looks like Jacinda will be bestowed with another University honour, this time from the Uni of Bologna (the oldest Uni in the world founded in 1088 no less!). She will be presented with it’s highest honour the Sigillum Magnum on 20 March. BTW Bologna the city has 3 nicknames, The Fat, The Red and The Learned, not hard to pick which one applies to her. Ps With her experience of work and accolades from Unis around the world I think she would be a far better fit for Vice Chancellor in NZ than Grant and she’ll need a cushy job when and if she returns.

Though the MSM may be shrinking over time, the blatant bias will remain. Traditional journalism is a sunset industry, which pays relatively poorly. So it’s hardly going to attract the nation’s best and brightest – those that do go into that field these days tend to be mediocre, with a collective reef socialist mentality. Given their situation and prospects, it’s only natural that they harbour resentment to those elsewhere in society that work hard to get ahead, and create wealth.

      It’s not so much a ‘point’ as an assertion.
      – At the time of the Euromaidan both Donetsk and Luhansk had very substantial Russian speaking populations, but were majority ethnic Ukrainian. This is my benchmark. Both these areas have been to a degree ethnically cleansed, with Ukrainians leaving either due to the war or because of a desire not to live under the control of Russian proxies.
      – The ‘insurgency’ in Donetsk and Luhansk from 2014 onwards was carried out by Russian operatives under the command of FSB officer Igor Girkin, and augmented by regular army and irregular forces from Russia. The conflict could never have been sustained without the initial and ongoing actions of Russia.
      – For every claim that it was Ukraine violating the Minsk agreements, it is a simple statement of fact to say that under these agreements the insurgents were supposed to disarm and Ukraine was supposed to control the borders of both Donetsk and Luhansk. And neither of these things ever happened. So that tends to nullify any further debate or discussion on the Minsk agreements: they were dead in the water even before they were signed, Russia never had any intention of abiding by them; they were only ever useful to Russia as a propaganda tool to cry ‘we went into this in good faith, we are abiding by them, the dastardly Ukrainians are violating them’.
      
      It is enough to state that Russia sees Ukraine as an extension of itself and only ever envisages it attaining a veneer of independence under tight Russian control. As soon as we realise this, everything else becomes clear. And for Russia, ‘the ends justify the means’. So there has been a massive propaganda war ongoing from day 1. Sadly, many believe fanciful tales that Ukraine was trying to carry out a ‘genocide’ in Donetsk and Luhansk. The yearly civilian and military casualty figures for each year of the conflict from 2014 to 2021 prove this claim has always been nonsense.

Yesterday the Herald ran a story about the dastardly deeds of the ‘colonisers’ offering guns for the purchase of Hauraki Gulf Islands and the deed up for auction in the UK , 1826 transaction.

That article quoted a 1966 book , Old Manukau saying the settlers gave up that particular attempt partly because of the evidence of “cannibal feasts” thereabouts but also cos of the threatening nature of the locals.

Today the Herald runs an editorial on same .

Concluding paragraph ” Although such historical documents ( the deed) make for challenging and confronting reading, we should never forget that murky episode of history” , this in the context of the prior paragraph “crass bumbling dealings of those offering muskets for prime land paved the way for the European takeover of New ZSealand impacting generations of Maori and are bound to affect whanau in coming years”

‘Arf a mo’ mate . Your editorial has deliberately , willfully omitted the information from yesterday , “cannibal feasts.”
And while we’re commanded to never forget a failed land purchase , why are we not exorted to never forget constant tribal warfare , slavery , hunger and uncontrolled chiefly power .

You can’t have it both ways and therein their continued road to failure .

Which raises the issue of why they are so rabidly pro Ardernism and Labour , they know these spendthrift , reckless rulers would bail them out.

  McConnell may be leaving, but I’d have to disagree that he’s been a failure.
  
  I don’t like the way he obstructed legitimately elected Presidents (Obama in particular), but to be fair he had the power and used it. And he never bent the knee to Trump, beyond what would always be expected of a GOP Senator working with a GOP President.
  
  My main gripe would be that he should have voted to impeach Trump for Jan 6. McConnell clearly saw Jan 6 for what it was – an insurrection bordering on attempted coup. But I think he made the calculation that Trump was on the way out anyway in 2020, and so didn’t need to court controversy in GOP-land by impeaching him as he was leaving. Well, he’s right if the long term trend seen from 1999 – 2019 returns**. How did the ‘House Price Index’ and ‘Hourly Income’ grow over that 20-year period?

• House Price Index: average increase each year was — 6.8%

• Hourly Income: average increase each year was — 3.2%.

That’s National and Labour, folks!!! . . . Screwing up the prospects for oncoming generations for at least 2 decades now. Both parties overseeing policies that inflate house prices at a much faster rate than incomes can grow to keep up.

They feed into our mission, our vision, our values and ultimately our perception of our organisation.

See? – in this example a question is “hidden in plain sight” – the authors tell you “in the case of the Treaty of Waitangi both versions were drafted by the English”

The International Law regarding Contra Proferentem doctrine might apply if the Maori version was written by Maori, but it is not, so of the English text written by the English or the Maori text also written by the English, which is the real deal – or, for nearly two centuries later, is neither?

Were the English writers of either text that fore-seeing and prophetic – good God! We are writing a nation’s founding documen, to rival the United States Constitution, to last for fore-seeable eons – or did they just write a real estate and protection agreement for the mid-nineteenth century context (not intended as a pun)?

I watched TV 3 news last night and concluded a couple of things.
One, two persons read a sentence each from an autocue. These people are neither journalists nor “stars” and the job could easily be done by one reasonably presentable person with an acceptable voice tone and abilty to read.
Two, the whole lot of those on screen are remarkably tied up in their own importance.

  Dim: Yes, that old man case is utterly tragic. Thank God the Sentencing Act contains a provision allowing a judge to pass a sentence less harsh than life imprisonment in cases like this.
  
  I still think the sentence is rather harsh compared to similar cases where the murderer in a suicide pact has not gone to jail at all. Jail is no place for a clearly frail 80 year old man.

The Government has announced they will designate Hamas in its entirety as a terrorist entity.

“The terrorist attacks by Hamas in October 2023 were brutal and we have unequivocally condemned them,” Prime Minister Christopher Luxon said in a statement.

Foreign Affairs Minister Winston Peters New Zealand said the military wing of Hamas had been designated as a terrorist entity since 2010.

“But what happened on October 7 reinforces we can no longer distinguish between the military and political wings of Hamas. The organisation as a whole bears responsibility for these horrific terrorist attacks,” Peters said.

  There’s a fishing ban in Northland instigated by the local Iwi to allow the fish stocks to regenerate. Unfortunately customery rights by Maori are excluded from the ban!

Peters and Luxon should explain how they can enforce a two state solution. If Gaza is a separate state then they can have military alliances with other countries and also have what arms they like to attack Israel again and again and again.

Oh dear, I see petrol pump payments were down due to a leap year handling problem.

I know one of the programmers involved. I shall have to mock him mercilessly.

Leap years are predictable. Just some really simple testing…. but people forget to do it.
They bite people from tiny one band bands to huge organisations. Even Microsoft has had a few run-ins with bugs.

The first time I had to deal with one was in 1988. I’d just moved to Cape Town and taken over as “chief programmer” (I found out I was also the only programmer) for a company on 12th February. I was still learning about their products. A payroll system crashed on 29th. We were told about the problem at 8.30 am and were told the system needed to be fixed before people clocked off at 5pm. That was before the days of internet so we (or more correctly, I) had to:
* Find the code for a product I didn’t even know the company made.
* Set up a computer with the code.
* Set up a test system (undocumented).
* Find the bug.
* Fix it
* Test it.
* Drive about 80km through thick traffic to the factory involved.
* Install the new code into the system before 4.30.
* Sit there under the beady eye of the operations director while all the staff clocked off…
* Drive home through thick traffic to get home at about 8pm to a less-than-happy wife with a burned dinner.

The next night the wife and I went for a very good restaurant meal at the company’s expense to celebrate a 30% raise.

We all know that Jan 6th was instigated by Nancy Pelosi. A plain and simple Trump rally was infiltrated by extreme right wingers and extreme left wingers. Nancy enabled her daughter to set up videoing the whole thing. Nancy also denied the two attempts of Trump asking for the National Guard. 20,000? Nope. 10,000? Nope. Nothing.
Pelosi is to blame when it could have been stopped. The word was out on social media in the middle of December 2020.

¡AFUERA! More good news from Argentina. Inclusive language (including pronouns) will be banned across the public service.

And the National Institute against Discrimination, Xenophobia and Racism (INADI), the equivalent of the Human Rights Commission, will be abolished. This shuts down the thought and speech police and, as a bonus, gets rid of 400 woke warriors.

Did anyone listen to Tory Whanau on HDPA?
When asked what would happen if Reading Cinema isn’t fixed, what would happen. You could literally hear the cogs moving as Tory realised she hadn’t even thought of that.
Heather then goes on to demonstrate the council may clearly bear some lost revenue and Tory denied black is white and then admitted she didn’t know and had left it up to someone else to tell her it was financially neutral.
The deal is bad enough but clearly Whanau exposed she is not just totally unsuitable for the job but is negligent as well.
