“Maoris die 7 years earlier than non-Maori” because of institutional racism in the health system therefore we need a separate Maori health system. If any of that was true then we might need a racially divided health system; actually a lot of separate health systems. Quite where the Maori or Ethiopian neurosurgeons will come from has not been explained. A Maori colleague recently died at 89 and a European one at 66. Poor European NZers also suffer from diabetes, heart problems and kidney failure more than rich ones. I’ve recently been treated by two Maori doctors and umpteen Filipino, Indian and Samoan nurses. They were all good but the best was the Samoan. We don’t need a racially divided anything. We need to work together to achieve the best results for everyone. And the best thing iwi could do is to stop their members from eating junk, smoking and drinking alcohol excessively and encourage them to get proper jobs.

    Actually, the “Colonialism” bogeyman has done untold harm to Maori. The fact that the evils of Colonialism don’t exist to the extent we’re told in this country is irrelevant. There really are thousands of people that believe they have no agency, that “colonialism” has stolen it from them. It doesn’t matter that that’s utter BS as the damage is from them believing it.

    This notion that Maori die younger than others is crock of …. The data is based on age of death and will be heavily influenced by life style and living choices in younger years – a person dying at 75 through poor health does not indicate that the current system is to blame. What we need is some decent analysis of projected life span based on current conditions. I bet a decent analysis would show that there is little if any gap.
    And why can we non-Maori not demand better care because we don’t live as long as Asians?
    Its a load of rubbish.

  There’s a clear and persistent difference in life expectancy between Polynesians and Europeans that go back to times before modern shit food/lifestyles and generational welfarism wrought their damage upon Maori. In 1950’s when Maori almost all worked and were raised by a married mum and dad their life expectancy was 11 years lower for men and 15 years lower for women:

  I’ll make an assumption that Ngai Tahu is the gold standard of all Maori tribes. It would be interesting to know what their life expectancy and health stats are compared to New Zealanders that aren’t Maori. Is there little if no difference. If that turns out to be the case then it would suggest it’s the non-gold-standard tribes and their leaders that are the cause of the issue. Are such stats available and from where?

    I think it is interesting that New Zealand is too far from then equator for people with brown skin to get sufficient sunlight in winter to make enough vitamin D for their immune system to function well.
    
    It makes sense, therefore, that brown skinned people would have poorer health statistics compared to lighter skinned people.
    
    Perhaps brown skinned people like descendants of the original Maori immigrants should go back to the lower lattitudes from whence they came?

School lunches. In the Herald today, David Seymour (and The Treasury) looking at whether there is evidence the hundreds of millions is well spent. Sounds like plenty of lunches are being wasted.

He said “the evidence that is in place indicates that the free school lunch programme has not improved attendance or achievement in any measurable way.”

Are there other ways than supplying premade meals, usually made off site and trucked in daily, to all whether they want them or not?

How about the option of a pack of commercial cheese and crackers at less than a buck a pack, no need to bin the unwanted, pop back in the carton for tomorrow. Add a piece of fruit, probably already available in schools. Not much variety but fuel for the actually hungry. Just an idea.

A principal said the other day that some only come to school for the free lunch. Those hundreds of millions would buy a lot of knocks on the door.

  1. It is very inefficient financially (wastes money)
  2. It wastes food (25% chucked out)
  3. Makes families reliant on the State again
  
  If you can not figure out how to feed your kid school lunch for less than say $2 (apple, and a couple of basic sandwiches), then you shouldn’t have kids in the first place.
  
  It is time some for parents to grow up and take responsibility for a basic of life – feed your kids!

  There’s a blood bath going on in EV industry. Most IC manufacturers are backing off switch rapidly, as they lose huge money on each EV they sell. Dedicated EV makers (mostly chinese) appear to be going under.
  
  Big player BYD’s sales have collapsed (down 65% from peak).
  
  Tesla will survive, but perhaps won’t grow much this year. EV purchasers will become more wary once there is a bit of negative sentiment in the air.

  It’s kind of genius by Hipkins. As a Wellington MP he had no legal right to stay at Premier House (or claim the accommodation supplement) so he didn’t initiate repairs on it.
  
  As long as Hipkins was PM it wasn’t an issue. However, when he lost the election it would be another nasty surprise for the incoming PM and a weapon to be used against them.

  I think that is overstating it. Retribution is close to vengeance – both imply willful destruction for no justifiable purpose.
  
  Israel is seeking the legitimate destruction of Hamas. Unfortunately Hamas has placed their assets amongst the Gazan population therefore destroying Hamas is causing massive destruction of Gaza too.
  
  Building your assets in civilian areas and using human shields does not make them safe from attack. They are still legitimate targets. When there is collateral damage it is on Hamas’ head.

  I’d suggest that even that is not a “solution” (and Hamas will never surrender, so it is wishful thinking anyway.) There will always be extremist Arabs to replace Hamas when they disappear. And the next wave will most likely be even worse than Hamas (just like a virus the new variant is almost always worse).
  
  So, I look at Israel’s strategy of “eliminating Hamas” with about the same derision as I looked at Arderns “eliminate Covid” strategy. It simply will not work.
  
  Please don’t misinterpret this as I must therefore be pro-Hamas – I am not. Just pointing out again that there is no “solution” to this mess. It can, of course, be made much worse by continually escalating week after week. The killing will continue en-mass for some time yet……and that is not a “solution” either.

    Any “solution” that relies on an impossibility is not a viable solution. May as well say “all I need to do to sort out my credit card debt is win lotto”.
    
    Nor will Hamas (and Islam in general) ever be defeated. Sure, you can beat them this time, but they will be back in another 10, 20 or 50 years. Beat them again and they will be back in 60, 70 or 100 years.
    
    They 100% believe that they must defeat Jews and Israel and they will just continue to come back again and again.
    
    According to ex Israeli soldiers, this is the main reason that Israel has adopted a “mowing the lawn” policy. They know they will never “win”. They know the Muslims will come back.
    
    The best Israel can hope for is a somewhat tolerable existence that allows them to live a reasonable life.

      The anger, and hatred from Arab states, and Muslims worldwide, towards Jews, is going through the roof because of the “mowing the lawn” strategy. Plus, of course, the weird lefties are joining in and have bizarrely become pro-Hamas, adding additional noise to the anger.

Also it is not fair for the Coalition to have to find the funds to fund after Labour the previous Government used Covid-19 funds to originally pay for this policy whe it first started.

      How about the policy of the previous National government – have another child when on benefit, then when the new child is 12 months old and the next oldest is 5 or more, must be work ready. Same pretty much as a working parent on parental leave.
      
      Not sure it worked well, it would need some hard talks between WINZ and the parent. Might work better when the proposed new sanctions are in place.

  I don’t mind a policy where schools provide lunches to those whose families are struggling. There were always kids like that. What we don’t need is what we have now where parents have been told not to send their child to school with lunch because the union wanted to bring in school lunches for all in the school.

    The real problem is that the state is incredibly bad at solving problems.
    
    We’re told that kids wag school and can’t concentrate because they are hungry. Similarly we hear that kids can’t afford transport.
    
    If the school feeding schemes really provided a nutritious meal and the kids (a) stopped wagging and (b) did better, then I think it would be somewhat excusable.
    
    But there is little evidence that this is actually happening.
    
    Sure, there is a very strong relationship between good nutrition and good school outcomes, but that is because people who care enough to feed their kids also care enough to engage with their kids about education. ie. it is a correlation, not a causal relationship.

Now the headlines read “Sun rises in the East, CLAIMS minister”.*

The other trend is that last year’s headlines were actually press releases about good things to happen in the future and were announcing funding (usually rounded up to total over four years).
This year’s headlines are about opposition (Labour, NGO or some random twitter) to a real or phantom government policy.

Stuff has one of their highly inflammatory articles on Gaza, this time about airdrops.

In an article about airdrops there’s a picture of a woman crying supposedly due to someone killed in an air stike. Of course that is nothing to do with the subject at hand, but why not add some drama.

The article does correctly identify a problem with high altitude air drops – you can’t control what happens and who gets the goods. For example, morphine ending up on the black market rather than in hospitals.

But I think there are two reasons the article misses:
1) Militaries like to play with their toys. They love an excuse to do air drops when a lowly truck would accomplish the same task.

2) Aid trucks on the ground are not necessarily safe. They get swarmed. They get attacked.

Quite likely Hamas is injecting itself into the supply line and thus controlling the food that people eat and can continue to strengthen their hold on the population.

  An exception might have been the CIA’s Air America delivering food and ammunition to Hmong outposts in Laos during the Vietnam war.
  
  Even then, rudimentary air strips, including at least one that seemed to run over a hilltop, allowed better delivery by little planes like a Pilatus or a Cessna, than that of material, usually without parachutes, kicked out of old DC3’s and the like.
  
  Aid drops couldn’t sustain Dien Bien Phu, either.
  
  From the news pictures of Gaza, how are they going to clear drop zones there? If by Hamas, wouldn’t that entice the Israelis to open fire?

  No Gravel road, the biggest shame is the NZ bowlers had against the #11 batsman (Hazelwood) facing 11 overs (67 balls) and not getting him out, Green is a batsman and has been an opener, Hazelwood is a bowler and a reason he his last man called in to bat but NZ bowlers could not get him out, thats the difference, it allowed Green to pile on 100 runs when he should not have had the opportunity.

Doocey, the Minister of Mental Health? That sounds like a national call to health action. Good luck to him.

Doocey’s calm interviewee technique impressed, though he let slip the word “colonisation.” Tame only a few times lapsed into smirk-ready, high-school “gotcha” mode.

Doocey seems keen to create scores, perhaps hundreds, of new clinical psychologists, and boost community groups that help folk with troubled minds. Isolated farmers was one group mentioned.

Did I miss any mention of our packed mental hospitals, and increasingly dire shortage of nurses and psychiatrists?

What if the Doocey approach creates a surge of new mental patients when already there’s no spare room in the psychiatric hospital system, and too few nurses and psychiatrists to treat additional sick folk?

Still, a Minister of Mental Health. A good start by the Coalition.

Something I have not yet grasped in my almost 32 years of living here is the seemingly New Zealander trait of trying to find someone else to blame and to “hold accountable” as if that solves problems.

Two “young men” with learners licenses kill themselves on their way to work when driving both illegally and dangerously and, somehow, their employer is supposed to be to blame.

How about looking in the mirror and asking why you raised a child that flouts the law and drives when they don’t have a license? Of course not! Rather try to blame the employer.

I frequently drove without a license as a kid. But if I had crashed then that was on me or my parents in the vehicle.

People seem to want to flout the law and have freedoms, but then absolve themselves of the responsibilities and consequences.

In many ways this is similar to Pike River. Nobody knew the dangers of the mine better than the miners. Yet they all chose to go into the mine. When the shit hits the fan we’re supposed to think of them as blameless victims.

  You may also have noticed this tendency with issues over the health of ethnic groups, reasons for criminal offending, failure to insure homes which are then struck by disaster etc. ACC has a lot to answer for. Personal responsibility was sacrificed at the altar of community well being. But this led to a loss of individual and corporate responsibility. Nobody could be held to be at fault for causing their own injury, so naturally they took to blaming others. Hence these reparations payments and swinging fines in Worksafe prosecutions. AGG took away the right to sue for personal injury and the obligation of personal responsibility, but now fails to compensate adequately in situations where lump sum compensation could have be available under personal injury law. So workplace and the justice system step in to find scapegoats. So it’s never the victim’s fault. People naturally want to blame someone for their misfortunes. In a society where those misfortunes are never their fault, they have to blame others.

Why does the Press have a Press Council to deal with any ethical questions. But scientists don’t. So many bad studies and bad claims – some even appear unethical and yet their is no arbitrating body to stop people making false scientific claims. And when a false claim is made in a study it just gets shared from paper to paper to paper. There is no license to practice that gets taken away for people who make bad faith science claims.

Sometimes I open the news and get the feeling we are looking at a one term government

Today is one of those days

National will hike fuel taxes by 22 cents next term, regos increased $50, new pothole fund unveiled

It would be better to keep labours fuel tax increase than lumping people with a 22 cent increase the next term.

      Yep, Labour’s disastrous Finance Minister, Grant Robertson, is to be paid $629,000 a year running Otago University.
      
      What a rort! Makes the Prime Minister’s salary and allowances trivial.
      
      Yep, the Grant Robertson, who with his mate at the Reserve Bank printed tens of billions of dollars during Covid and caused our inflation.
      
      Robertson mightn’t be able to organise a piss-up in a brewery, but he’d sure ruin the beer.

I’m starting to like Jenna Lynch:

ANALYSIS: The political judgment test over whether to take a taxpayer subsidy was one Christopher Luxon had already stumbled on in Opposition.

His advisors had to sit him down and tell him it was inappropriate for him to order himself a Tesla on the taxpayer dime while he was ripping into the Government for giving Clean Car Discounts to the wealthy. He should have learned the lesson then and didn’t.

Instead, he initially decided to take $52,000 a year in a taxpayer-funded accommodation allowance while living in his own Wellington apartment because he doesn’t believe Premier House is liveable. He then backtracked after public uproar and decided to pay back what he had already received.

The environment he has created is that every single cent of taxpayer cash needs to be managed. His Government is looking at cancelling classroom builds, cutting back food in schools, job cuts in the public service, and on Monday, hiking up costs for Kiwi families to drive their cars to work.

In that environment, he still thought it appropriate to trim some off the top for himself and still doesn’t have a good explanation for it.

  So you like a bully reporter who is deliberately manipulating her story to make out that Luxon is wanting to spend more on himself ($32m to upgrade Premier House), totally ignoring that it was former Labour PM Ardern who commissioned the report in the first place, and then went on to say former PM Ardern lived there but didn’t state that Ardern also highlighted the inadequacies of the building (hence her commissioning the report)? And then Lynch went on to link other unrelated issues all back to Luxon and ignored the reasons why this has come about because Labour overspent the budget by tens of billions and misused this funding for the likes of school lunches? And that petrol taxes were ok under Labour?
  
  Well I’m sure Lynch will be more than chuffed to have you, Muttonbird, as a supporter! Clearly you are both birds of the same feather, perhaps.

What is wrong with Simon Dallow TV 1 News reader?
He has just given us the benefit of his spin again by saying that “Sorry to say, there’s more rain on the way”.
Does he not realise that several areas are in drought conditions?
I guess he is either ignorant or just doesn’t care.

Someone need to sit down with whoever is advising Luxon or if no one is, get him a decent advisor. This would have been a perfect opportunity to show New Zealanders the state of the building so people know what he is talking about.

The Prime Minister is refusing to allow cameras in to see the state of Premier House, the official prime ministerial residence he’s elected not to live in claiming it’s not up to scratch.

  It’s an interesting thing the accommodation allowance
  Why should they get it at all?
  Basically these MPs are expats in Wellington who will return whence they came when they leave parliament
  Expats I knew wore the cost themselves

Doesn’t really sound like the kind of person we want in NZ

A grandfather who failed to declare an indecent assault conviction when he came to New Zealand will be allowed to stay here – for the sake of his grandchildren.

The 70-year-old retiree has successfully appealed a deportation liability notice because according to the New Zealand Immigration and Protection Tribunal, there are exceptional humanitarian circumstances in allowing him to stay, even though it found he had concealed his criminal past.

The man, who is not named, faced deportation for failing to declare an indecent assault conviction in 1976 which came to light years later when he was serving time in prison in the UK on a subsequent similar matter.
