I have some news for the Health New Zealand worker who complained anonymously on Reddit about their manager banning the use of te reo in e-mails to patients.
I don’t like ‘kia ora’ or ‘nga mihi’, either, in e-mails from government and council officers.
It’s not my culture.
I feel as if I’m being treated tokenistically.
And also it’s the result of an official policy. They have to do it. It’s not sincere.
The other day I was in a council office. A non-Maori staffer approached me calling out: ‘Kia ora!’
I answered with ‘good afternoon’.
She replied with ‘good afternoon’, too.
It might surprise the health worker and people above the manager – like the chief people officer (is that what personnel managers used to be called?) – that a lot of people don’t like it but have never felt they could resist.

  It’s a very significant number that don’t like it. We got this at the boarding gate for the Air NZ flight from Hong Kong. Once someone raised the subject there was widespread complaints about Manglish.

  Every day the “First” bit seems a little more tarnished.
  
  About two weeks ago someone who had moved overseas bitterly complained about how everything in NZ has taken a slide in the last few years – especially delivery services.
  
  Today I received a parcel from UK:
  * 3 days from pick up in UK to being cleared through customs in Auckland.
  * 6 further days to make its way from Auckland to Christchurch.

    My person pet peave. Things take 2 or three days to be dispatched in their hom country and travel to NZ. Then you wait at least a week for customs to process and a courier to ship it to you. Started under covid and never returned to normal service.
    
    Prior to covid you could regularly buy something in Ak and have it arrive in CHCH the next day. Now if that happens it is celebration time. Normal delivery is more like 3 days.

      I have found that it’s quicker to buy just about anything from the SI – it gets delivered to me in the Tararua District, rural delivery, in a couple of days.
      And I bought a watch on Amazon and it was delivered from the Philippines ‘store’ in 4 days!

      DG – not entirely new for NZ Post.
      
      In the late 90’s it took 5 days for an urgently needed document to get from Hastings to Waipawa – about 45k’s away.
      
      In those days (but not now) I could have walked there and back quicker.
      
      Going back to the mid 80,s a letter posted in Hastings by 10am could be in my Waipawa Post Box at about 3pm the same day. Local people doing the job at both ends.
      
      Now a letter posted in Hastings goes to Palmerston North to be sorted and then back to Waipawa – about a 150/160k round trip.

      David, my mother-in-law (in London) is aging and has asked my wife to look after her bank affairs. To get access to online banking, Natwest insist on sending an access code by mail (they will not email it or give it over the phone). The code is only valid for 45 days. We are now waiting on our third iteration of the code as the previous two have not made it from the UK to NZ in time.

Ma was just telling me that the late-night host on ZB (Tim) was saying that the dudge who heard Golly’s case yesterday, Maria Pecotic, was one of her besties from way back.

Apparently they had worked together previously on a ‘Bill-of-Rights’ case in the Court of Appeal.

Surely she should of recused herself on that basis?

    The maximum penalty is seven years prison, which is not on the radar and I don’t know why the media keeps bringing it up.

      I’ve never understood the mental health card. Surely, if someone is a self confessed kleptomaniac or psychopath, this should be reason to keep them in prison for even longer.

        Not sure how it works but the holiday used to double down. Be naughty and you got a week, then two weeks, then 4, then 8, and so on.
        On the comments policy the naughty ones were listed, so you could find out when they are due back.
        Either that or he finally realised that being senior downticker and senior troll was a waste of time, and he grew up.

    One of the judges who might have been in a position to pass sentence on me recused himself because he and I had exchanged heated words – well, as heated as you can in court without being held in contempt – about three years earlier.

    Ohhhh OK…… Its just coincidence that a former colleague is now judging the case.
    
    As my old Audit Professor used to say…. NZ is a small place, but perception of conflict of interest is to be avoid at all costs
    
    We all know that Golriz will get discharge without conviction so she can go and practice lawyer now her political career is stuffed
    
    And we also know that many other people with a lower profile and no connections to the established Judiciary/Political parties/Senior Public Servants/International Sports would get convicted
    
    The system increasingly not only looks corrupt to the careful observer but openly flaunts its corruption.
    
    The Judge not recusing herself is a blatant breach of ethical standards – doesnt matter if they havent seen each other for years.

  Maggy, the NZ legal community – for want of a better phrase – is small. Pretty much everyone will know or have worked with just about everyone else at some time.
  
  Being a strong wimminz of colour she’s going to get a soft ride no matter what dudge she faces.
  
  I’d like to know how many offenses she really comitted. When she “took responsibility” was it only for the offending she was nabbed on?
  
  Various statistics suggest that only somewhere around 10% of shoplifting gets caught. So unless GG is the world’s worst shoplifter ever then she has committed many more offenses – well into the double digits.
  
  But hey, who knows. Maybe she’s a crap pollie and a crap crim.

    She will most likely receive community service. To be fair, anyone with no prior criminal record would get the same deal. Her real penalty will be the impact a conviction will have on her ability to practice as a lawyer.
    
    A less likely outcome is a discharge without conviction. If you can get that for beating up an elderly woman you can probably get it for shop lifting.

      A lawyer in front of a court and convicted should lose the ability to practice law when things like theft, dishonesty, assault are involved (trivial stuff like contested speeding tickets should not impinge)

      You are suggesting a free pass for a person who put themselves forward, constantly, as better than others on all sorts of issues (Race relations, International Relations, Environment matters, Social Justice matters etc etc) and not only that SET law for others to follow as an MP.
      
      She has fallen well short of standards required while in a very important role. This is not a historical conviction where she has turned her life around. Its willfully and frequently breaking the law while serving in parliament
      
      She should be convicted and that should lead to losing the right to be a lawyer…

My view on this is that if you want to make a thing about being culturally sensitive or culturally appropriate, then as a public servant you should be sure to communicate in a culturally appropriate way with your audience.

For the two non Maori patients, that means not in Te Reo. For Maori patients that might mean completely in Te Reo. But the onus is on you, as the standard bearer of cultural matters, to make the effort, not everybody else

  Around 186,000 New Zealanders self-report some knowledge of the Maori language.
  As there are about 800,000 Maori that probably means there is a 1:4 chance a Maorificated email would reach someone who is not particularly fluent in te reo.
  
  And when I attempted to learn some of the basics of te reo, a couple of decades ago, it failed because the teacher did not know enough about English grammar to understand questions the evening class asked of him, but when we had learned to recite the necessities: what our name was, our mountain, river and the biggest expanse of water near us, the teacher did make the comment we should never “try out” our newly informed knowledge on any Maori, especially elderly Maori, for fear that they were not fluent and would likely be enshrouded in embarrassing shame of not knowing their own indigenous language.
  I guess anyone in this category must still feel some remorse when an email starting “kia ora” or ending “nga mihi” confronts them – same watching television where the pronunciation of Maori has now become such a glib, and fast in presentation – get it over them, and out of the way for us – that it serves no learning opportunity, any useful normalisation of the language, and still only a mildly grating fucking nuisance – as well as not being inclusive for Muslims, binary Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Intersex, and Asexual people and all those that brevity excludes.

    So what?
    
    I take it this is almost all 152 howitzer ammunition (the most important staple food of artillery).
    
    Good condition only matters for extreme accuracy at very long range. Otherwise a bit of corrosion etc is not going to matter.
    
    Most of the Russian artillery seems to be deployed at around 20km or so which is not pushing accuracy.
    
    The Russians have so much ammo that they are able to apply Stalin’s WW2 philosophy: Quantity has a quality all of its own.
    
    The entire 155mm output of Europe and USA is only about a 20th of the ammo required to match Russia shell-for-shell. Unless they are doing that the quality of the ammo doesn’t come into the equation. ie. poorly aimed rounds coming in at 20x the rate of well aimed rounds are going to win.

        NATO is admitting they are almost at that point now (is anyone claiming otherwise?). But they are also saying Russia has a big stockpile of low-grade ammo – but to cmm’s point above – it still kills people (obviously). My limited understanding, from what I’ve read, is that worn-out field gun barrels also cause inaccuracies, so high-quality shells don’t mean too much fired out of an overused gun (its still inaccurate). So even low-quality ammo is better than none if you’re in a war.
        
        AOR – thanks for the link above, a decent amount of info there. Their battle maps seem to be identical or similar to others I’ve found on other sites.

  Yep; but Russia also now has twice the border length to guard against NATO, so shell distribution and artillery equipment placement becomes critical.
  
  With the recent invasion of Russian territories by Russian renegade soldiers the border already is like a sieve and large parts are undefended.
  
  Even if Russia delivered all 3 million shells to the front line and bombarded Ukraine for 5 years with 15 million shells it would leave a devastated front line to occupy with no material value except the land itself. There will still be 38 million Ukrainians and a NATO army intact. Shells only cover 40 km of a salient. You need how many to devastate 40km before moving to the next 40km?
  
  Zero sum game for the land will be infrastructure clean and not fit for resettlement by Russian peasants unless forced. Russia simply does not have enough people to force the resettlement and pay for the new infrastructure.
  
  Biggest problem for Russia is Belarus. Not the most stable political country and with a citizenship looking enviously over their border at the better living conditions in their western, northern and southern borders. Russia may be forced to place some of their 3 million shells with an occupation force should the Belarus people stage a rebellion.
  
  There will come a time where NATO goes all in and takes Kaliningrad, Murmansk and moves to liberate those Finnish area taken by Stalin. Putting huge pressure on St Peterburg where those 3 million shells will be desperately needed for defence.
  
  How many shells were used over four months to take the tiny bit of land where once was the village of Adviika. Land totally useless unless huge amount of rebuild manpower and material was allocated by Russia.
  
  Unless Russia wants it to be a no go zone but the depth of the salient is not deep enough to protect the land bridge to Crimea.

    Russian artillery doesn’t have the range or accuracy of Western supplied artillery that can do up to 30-40km usefully. Russians are limited to about 20-25km and then only with shitty accuracy from their worn out guns, poor quality ammo and green crews that puts them in easy range of Ukrainian counter-battery fire and explains their eye-watering loss rates (typically 40-50 Russian guns destroyed every day vs generally <5 for Ukraine)

      When the “counter battery fire” is only firing a twentieth of the shells it hardly matters how accurate it is.
      
      Even with good accuracy, howitzers EAT ammo. No ammo and they can’t do jack.
      
      Every two or three weeks, Russia fires the whole annual output of USA and Europe. Accuracy won’t sort that out.
      
      As for green crews: Ukraine soldiers don’t last long and they are scraping the bottom of the barrel. Training them up takes a lot of ammo that they don’t have, so the Ukrainians will not be getting anywhere near the potential performance of their guns.

        Ukraine is going to receive a million additional shells starting in a few weeks and extending over next few months sourced globally by an EU consortium from India and other places (making a financial killing with the high prices being paid). That has freed Ukraine up to use more now as they no longer need to conserve.
        
        The Ukrainians are using a fair number of highly automated western self-propelled guns like the Archer that can drive to a spot, fire off three shells and be gone all in under 60s. Shorter than a the flight time of counterbattery fire.
        
        And Russia has almost no counterbattery radars left to locate Ukrainian guns.
        
        The one bright spot for Russia is their lancet drones that have the range to get to Ukranian guns, and are the cause of most Ukrainian gun losses.

  The war is undergoing a big shift in recent days as Ukraine is ramping up long range drone production to take out poorly defended and highly vulnerable Regional Russian Refineries up to 1000km from Ukraine.
  
  Interesting that these have been daylight attacks, suggesting use of AI vision based terminal targeting to precisely hit the critical refinery structures.
  
  A couple of complex & vulnerable cracking/distillation columns have been wrecked in last few days representing a significant fraction of Russian transport fuel production that will take months to fix, and will badly impact their ability to maintain regional supply lines and agricultural needs. It may eventually impact their front-line logistics.
  
  The impact to Russian economy will be catastrophic, this is an existential risk for Russia. They have no effective counter, having lost so much air defense equipment in Ukraine and I suspect could lead to extreme escalation by a desperate Putin.

    Again it comes down to accuracy and range. If you push the guns hard (further range) you use higher pressure charges which erode the barrels faster. If you have a massive numerical advantage then that is less important.
    
    A worn out barrel can still be used for a very long time if you are not using it at maximum range and requiring maximum accuracy. When you’ve got a 20x ammo advantage then you can keep distances a bit shorter and accuracy is far less important.
    
    It really is no different to a rifle barrel. A target rifle barrel might no longer be useful for target shooting after, say, 1000 rounds. But it might still be fine for bush hunting out to 20,000 rounds.

      Russia might have a 3x ammo advantage, but not more than that. And their 40-60 year old Stockpiles of guns, tanks and APVs that have been out in weather and extensively scavenged for decades are looking very depleted – keeping in mind that they would take best stuff first, what remains is likely barely serviceable and requiring a lot of work to even barely function.
      
      A lot of remaining stocks will have already been cannibalized for parts, and cost of bringing remainder into service will be continually increasing.

Labour getting their facts wrong again. The much vaunted new Labour Finance Spokesperson Barbara Edmonds made the claim via a press release at the weekend.

The number comes from a story published by the Stuff website in 2021, which was included in a piece of CTU economic analysis. No shock the CTU getting its fact wrong-telling porkies again.

I am at a loss as to the attitude of the left to housing landlords. They seem to think the Government is doing them a big favour, helping their rich mates, by allowing interest deductibility back again. Interest used to be able to be deducted since forever as a legitimate business expense on housing loans. Still is on commercial property loans. The Government is only returning it to the way it was, and should be. The fact that Labour unfairly targeted owners of rental housing seems to be ignored be these people. It does increase rents, we put the rent up $25 pw to cover this, increasing rates etc. A lot of these costs brought about by the last Government. Crickets about that from those.

    Don’t forget that the ‘reduced tax bill’ for rental owners is against the income from the rental, not from overall income, like from the day job.
    
    And also that most rental owners make a loss for the first few years, sometimes quite a few, until the break even point is reached. Under current rules, the loss is ring fenced and carried forward until rental income exceeds rental expenses. Ring fencing of those losses is jam today for revenue collection, but jam ‘tomorrow’ for the rental owners.
    
    Your Joe Average with a mortgage and related expenses – imputed rent levels the playing field. That means the homeowner declares to IRD the market rent for the home and deducts expenses from that. Consider how folk would feel about that if they worked, lived frugally, and eventually paid off the mortgage. Under imputed rent they could still deduct relevant expenses, level playing field and all that, but their income tax bill would skyrocket. Sound fair?

    Remember that this is not excess money to these people. They have committed it all one way or another. Many will have HP agreements etc – take away these benefits and many people will default on HP, loans etc.
    
    USA has exactly the same problem. They’re adding $10k USD to their national debt every year for every man woman and child. They have factored this into what they consider normal life. Take that away and they will interpret that as suffering. The economic shock of doing this would be huge.
    
    If the beneficiaries had to tighten their belts then it wouldn’t be too bad if the taxpayers ended up paying less tax and still kept spending.

One of New Zealand’s two main sheep milking companies has told its 13 farmers-suppliers to dry off its sheep.
Maui Milk is one of many companies being impacted by the imbalance between supply and demand for NZ sheep dairy products.
Supplier Allan Browne, who farms 1700 ewes near Cambridge told RNZ, “Receiving an email at 4.30pm telling us to stop milking and dry off our sheep immediately was a big shock.
It’s very awkward because we’re trying to get them pregnant, so starving them to dry them off is not really an option”
The lost income will be close to half a million dollars, he said.

Denying, or “forgetting”, offending is hardly taking full responsibility.

This suggests to me at least one of the following:
* She’s a damn liar. She remembers full well.
* There are numerous other offenses that she’s not admitting.

Either way she is failing to take full responsibility for her actions.

Surely shop lifting must be high stress. I can remember well a low level crime I participated in in 1984. Very well. I still feel some guilt/whatever today and have never done that again.

The only way she could have truly forgotten an offense like this less than a year ago is if she had so many offences that it is lost in the blur. That would surely need to be many dozen offenses.

I see there is also reporting that she went into Scotties with two associates. I wonder whether they were accomplices?

Interesting discussion on the radio this morning about the chemical and surgical alteration of children to address the mental health issue of gender dysphoria. Of course it’s a barbaric act and should be outlawed leaving such a decision to adulthood. The point was made that overseas there are increasing numbers of children suing parents for facilitating such practises.

The name of the new Minister of Mental Health, Matt Doocey (National), was brought up as having said he looked forward to his children eventually declaring their own gender, which I thought was a joke until I found it in a speech he gave in support of the Conversion Practises Prohibition bill in 2022:

    It will temporarily blind someone interfering with their ability to take a photo. It will potentially confuse camera exposure sensors resulting in over/under exposed pics.
    
    But these days most high end cameras will figure it out. People even film welding without special filters or such.
    
    I have some extremely powerful and small torches which can concentrate 1000+ lumens into an area the size of a postage stamp at 5 metres. Shine that in someone’s eyes and they can’t see properly for a minute or two. Bloody painful too.
    
    In some areas of the world that would be considered assault but as we’ve discussed below it would seem that is unlikely in NZ.

She waffled on about needing to reform the Broadcasting Act because apparently TVNZ and RNZ have been operating on an uneven playing field. She also expressed sympathy for the Digital Services Tax bill which would see tech companies taxed and the revenue used to subsidise media.

  cmm: As you know I don’t practise criminal law…but unless things have changed since I was at law school I very much doubt you can have “assault by torch”…there have of course been cases of people convicted of aiming lasers at the pilots of planes, but that would be a specific offence I think.

  Given this is done in the context of a former very high profile Green MP , I fully expect the MSM to investigate this to the full extent of their abilities ( as we know they would had this been a member of the blue or yellow team’s entourage) and to do extensive , ongoing and continuing exposes of same .
  
  Afterall for the last couple of weeks they’ve been telling us how important they are to us and our democracy.

  A lot of the reason to eliminate these workers is not the labour cost, but rather the problems trying to employ them – reliability at showing up for work etc.

If you’re charging an EV using coal-fired electricity then you’re emitting about twice the CO2 of someone driving a “gas guzzler”.

Using a Nissan Leaf and a Suzuki Swift as fairly equivalent vehicles:
A Nissan Leaf gets about 5 to 6km/kWh after charging inefficiencies etc.
Burning coal to make electricity releases about 1000g CO2/kWh. Therefore about 180g CO2/km.

The Suzuki Swift generates around 105g CO2/km. About half that.

EVs should really be considered marginal load which are using marginal generation (ie. the most polluting generation). In other words, when someone plugs in an EV, Huntly needs to work harder to meet the load.

So, why bother?

But that former PM didn’t wear a hazmat suit or a sealed hazmat mask with oxygen tanks; she strutted around like nothing was wrong, hugging and taking selfies with complete strangers.
  
  And no-one on the left stopped having cocktail parties, or drunken orgies. All the while laughing and taking the piss.

With all the reasons/excuses dreamed up to explain why Golriz stole expensive clothing, what about greed? Even when you earn a lot, a designer skirt can seem too much of an extravagance. Easier to stuff it in your capacious bag – which you conveniently have brought with you. On every visit. A kind of middle class ram raid.

Here’s a sad little factoid from a Scandinavian study:

If you give men more money, for example a lottery win, it generally results in them having more kids – either with current partner or with a new partner. They plough their fortunes into more family

If you give women more money (same lottery win) it generally doesn’t increase the number of kids they will have, but does increase the likelihood that they will end their current relationship as they look to ‘trade up’ for a higher status male.

In effect on average men are makers and women dissipaters.

So if you want birth rates to go up, and your culture to thrive, you need to change laws so that men get control of more money and women less, particularly through relationship splits, because of where our sexually dimorphic natures drive us.

The movement of a flight deck seat is a key focus of the probe into a sudden mid-air dive by a LATAM Airlines Boeing 787 plane that left more than 50 people injured, aviation industry publication the Air Current reported.

  I used to live quite close to a mosque and they cranked up at about 4.30am depending on the time of year
  Quite noisy in the still of the night. I would imagine in Wellington they’d last about a day doing that

      I completely agree – we have been far too easy. But I do think the tipping point (which as you say should have come a long time ago) will be any attempted theft of private property. If the police don’t stop it someone will. Not sure I buy the idea they’re growing in numbers either – a small minority scream and shout but most of their followers are pretty thick and pretty useless, they’ve been seduced by the cult of victimhood but they’d be the first to bolt at the first sign of any serious conflict. They’re certainly not capable of leading any sort of insurrection.

One Labour MP on Thursday appeared to even suggest New Zealand could go the way of the United States or Russia if we don’t follow due process.

“I’m not comparing the current Government to Trump.
