‘Co-governance Is Not Democracy’ is a speech Winston Peters made on Sunday, 21 August 2022

Labour believes it knows best, and New Zealanders are growing more alarmed.
They know Labour has no authority to rank our citizenship based on race.
… Democracy for us has meant freedom, which so many populations around the world and down through the centuries, have never had the good fortune to experience.
New Zealand men and women have put their lives on the line to defend it.
And we are the lucky beneficiaries of the aspirations, dreams, sacrifice and hard work of others before us.
But we should remember the famous lines of John Philpott Curran all those years ago.
‘The condition of which God has given liberty to man is eternal vigilance’. [1]

Winston’s speech this Sunday just past is ratchetted a notch up on the one in 2022, but critics seem to miss the point that Winston is saying a lack of our vigilance can lead, as it did for unaware or complacent Germans, to the horrors of Hitler’s ethnic exceptionalism – the lifting of One Race above all others.

Perhaps when Luxon gives Winston a “talking to”, it may be a more constructive conversation.
Winston was not listened to that much apparently back Sunday, 21 August 2022.
In that context it is not surprising he has raised his rhetoric a notch and has been a little more direct

  Oh the irony ….screeching about Peters comparing TPM to Nazi thought….when essentially he is ABSOLUTELY correct….this is the ‘elephant in the room’…which his critics all choose to ignore. TPM do believe their genetic makeup to be ‘ better’ than others…it inconveniently WAS on their website remember.

    Yes Winston is correct. These journalists are part of a generation that has not been educated about the centrality of freedom to our way of life. The Nazis did not start out by putting Jews into gas chambers. The measures were modest. For example Jewish business owners were prohibited from employing non Jewish workers. Then it ramped up.
    
    How is that different to what we have seen in New Zealand? No you cannot work as a realtor unless you are indoctrinated in Maori philosophy. If you are a public servant you will be shunned if you refuse to participate in Maori prayers. If you wish to speak about how trans ideology is a threat to women you will be attacked by a mob.
    
    This is the point being made by Winston.

      Yes it starts with ‘modest measures’. But did Winston make the same comments when he was propping up Labour for three years and those ‘modest measures’ started?
      Perhaps he did but the media didn’t report it…

  Comparing people to Nazis is wrong. Doesn’t matter if maybe there is some similarity with a small part of what the Nazis did or believed. That is not a justification. There are other ways to make an argument.

    The Nazi’s and their behaviour of 1930-34.
    Bore absolutely no resemblance to the Nazi’s and their actions of 1942-45.
    It all started with theories and a book and some forceful acts of violence and intimidation in the street, by small groups and individuals and grew to be what we now know as the Holocaust.
    The reference of one race over another (commented by TPM), the “co governance ” where Maori get 50% of the say (from 15% of the population) and right of denial to actions of others, on race.
    This is the Theory that mirrors the start of Nazism.

      Race is a funny thing.
      There was a country in the 50s, 60’s and 70’s that was ruled by the 15%, but the rest of the world took exception to it. The country was quite rich but the 85% were “down trodden”
      Come the 80’s, with a carasmatic leader, the 85% became the predominant race, which has seen a major change in fortunes. The 15% has fled and things can only get worse.
      Making a change in NZ to the 15% having 50% of the say so can only go the same way.

      Of course it’s valid. Perhaps the people that claim it’s never valid don’t quite have a grasp of the history of Nazi ideology and its implementation.
      
      And perhaps they can’t quite perform an abstraction of the essentials of what the Nazis believed and did. Just because the enemy doesn’t speak German, wear uniforms or build concentration camps it doesn’t mean their philosophical imperatives are not closely aligned.

      In a more up-to-date position a recent speech by Putin attacking western influence in Russia seemed like something the NZ Media print most days attacking western influence in ‘Aotearoa’. There is no question in my mind that that the political leanings of people in NZ pushing ideology like He Puapua are not much different to those running totalitarian regimes.

    Nigel, if that were more the case in Germany prior to Hitler and the Holocaust maybe neither would have reached the enormity of evil that you would now shy away from even mentioning it must have had minority start, like do most issues, and as Peters alludes to
    
    Winston perhaps did not tread as carefully as he could – where Angels and Christopher Luxon would fear to rush in – but Winston has to be admired for using the verboten issue of Hitler, Nazis, and the Holocaust to warn of the verboten issue of the Treaty “principles and privileges” running amok.

      Verboten? We never hear the end about these things, and this is no surprise, given that they constitute the basis and the justification and of our system for the last 80 years.
      
      As we’ve seen, the only thing that is “verboten” is to give Jews insufficient fealty and deference based on these things, and to never cite them in reference to anyone but Jews.
      
      You’d think that WW2 effected nobody else besides the Jews if you believed the propaganda. By rights, Russians should have special status given their far superior suffering and greater privations during WW2.
      
      By rights, there should be Russian-themed “Great Patriotic War Museums” all around the world reminding us “never again.” However, we only see Holocaust museums, even though many times fewer Jews were victims of the Nazis.
      
      But it’s the opposite in fact: we so no Russian war memorials, and the Russians are now supposedly our enemies, while Israel is characterised as our indispensable ally. Who’s writing he script here?

      Yet we are being lectured on how we discuss our history by groups who don’t seem to realise that.
      The war is over. We won.
      Bad things happened to hundreds of millions of people.
      But it is time to move on.
      Everyone has death and suffering in their history.

  Luxon is leader of the National Party, not NZF. Even though he is PM he is one of three leaders who are all entitled to free speech.
  It may be better if Peters give Luxon a talking to about hardening up.

  Why the F_@k couldn’t Luxon have just said something like ‘Winston was at a NZF event speaking about NZF party policy and the NZF role in government. I wouldn’t have compared labour / Greens / Maori to Nazis but I do agree that there is some similarity in beliefs and some statements’.
  
  Instead it appears we have the usual, ‘he shouldn’t have said that and I am talking to coalition partners about being more careful with the words’ type statement. NO Luxon, many are quite happy that the rightish are back in power and we want to get the message out about terrible lefty policy.
  
  I am increasingly glad that ACT and NZF are in with National. Which is hard to say as an opponent of Winston for many years. Without them I am not sure if this government would have any spine whatsoever. I hate National being called Labour lite But Luxon is trying very hard to persuade me they are.

    A good mp can make those comments without giving the media ammunition to carry out attacks. The government mp’s need to be aware of what they are saying, how it will be reported because that takes away from what they are trying to do and show the public. If Winston makes a comment that is picked up and used to attack the government for a few days that isn’t a win for the right, that is a loss.

      I understand you point and would normally agree but whilst I cant stand Winston he is probably the smartest / best politician we have ever had. He chose his words because he knew the media would be all over it and it would generate a couple of days media coverage. Thats smart politics.
      
      I think his point was a win for the right. I bet more people know about the Maori partys racist beliefs now then did before. I bet most people (in Maori) agree that treating people different based on race is a bad policy.

        Winston is actually playing the media, to get them to point out that National is ‘Labour Lite.’ As the most experienced I say he knows what he is doing. Nothing will change until Luxon changes or hands in his man card. Always said he is a very good manager, but not a leader.

    Yes, I agree. The sight, or sound of NZF, or Winston Peters used to make my blood boil. I’m giving them the benefit of the doubt until King’s Birthday. His recent comments hit the nail on the head. NZF is the nearest thing we have to a nationalist populist party. ACT are doing alright too.

      I have railed against Winston and NZF for years. Strangely this iteration of Winston seems more ‘mild’ then normal. Even many of the NZF policy platforms seem, dare I say it, sensible. I dont agree with all NZF but at least Winston backs his policy.
      
      This morning I even wondered if in future I could bring myself to vote NZF!!! Something I have never thought or done.

  Peters is making a valid point…true!
  The point Prime Minister Chris Luxon is making with his ‘not helpful’ comment, refers to the fact that a significant % of the population, including some here on KB, only understand the ‘crayon and comic talk’ that they have become accustomed to during the past six years; and in order to communicate with them at their level one has to reduce words to one syllable.
  For all his other faults, Winston is a very eloquent speaker; qualities that are not very obvious when listening to Radio/TV media interviews of other people; particularly during the reign of the last govt.

Green Party slams Government cruel Kainga Ora crackdown.

You have to wonder how stupid Green housing spokesperson and the Green’s are when it comes to what the rules should be when it comes to evicting tenants from Kainga Ora housing.

To call these policies cruel and ignorant to the consequences of Poverty is ridiculous and out and out bullshit and you would have to wonder if her Parents were living in Kainga Ora dwellings how loud the protest noise would be if they had been abused and threatened the same way other elderly people living in Kainga Ora have been. The noise would be deafening and the protest would be long and loud, that’s why you need rulesand if you want the State’s help you need to obey those rules the same as most people do .

      The problem with getting a “co payment” from the tenant is that many (almost all) of these tenants are an a benefit, so anything they contribute comes out of the tax payers purse any way, and they would just plead that they are now short by that amount and get a top up.
      In the end the tax payer coughs up again.

  The solution for the Green Party dilemma is simple (they won’t like it anyway but tough)!!
  
  When violent scumbag tenant parents are evicted, their children are put into the care of the Ministry of Children/Oranga Tamariki.
  
  That way, vulnerable children will be safe from violence from their own parents (do the Greens seriously think that the children are not subjected to violence, if the scumbags parents happily dish it out to their well behaved neighbours and their visitors)?
  
  Plus it breaks the cycle – that of vulnerable children learning to be violent against others, because of the learned behavior from their feral parents.
  
  That way the children are brought up by wrap around services to become well adjusted citizens.
  
  Ditto too the feral parents, except the Greens don’t seem to accept the fact that feral parents need to want to change. Change can’t be forced upon them. So in some cases they won’t stop being violent feral scumbags. So it’s best their children are away from that environment.
  
  For those feral parents that do want to change? Great! Plus they then get their kids back.
  
  Simple eh stupid Greens (I say that because I heard the interview with the Greens on Morning Report this morning. The Greens are totally deluded and dangerous with their ideology).

    Half of the social housing waiting list is people with no children. Mostly single, working age men, some couples. One bedroom places. Traditionally state housing was almost all for families, so a lot of one beddies are having to be build or bought for these men.

        Boarding houses used to be an important accommodation option. Times have changed though. Boarding houses are heavily regulated, much of it recent. Including (expensive) compliance with the healthy homes regulations and a host of hefty fees and fines. I know two now closed and of others where disruptive or risky occupiers have had to leave. Because – costs, fines, paperwork etc etc.

Haven’t seen mentioned that social housing rents are almost all income related and mostly well under market rent. Yet total amount of rent arrears is up 2000% since 2017 $1mill to $21mill.

Sustaining Tenancies is to be canned – I don’t think it is funded beyond this fiscal year anyway. Not completely sure about that though. Basically it provides ‘support’ for households about to be evicted – probably mostly money.

Started out as just for social housing tenants, later extended to all tenants. The Vote for current year a bit over $6 mill and is intended to cover about 2300 household places. 2022/2023 970 households supported. Maybe there was money left over? Though that Vote also covers a smaller number of households in the Rapid Rehousing initiative. I’m sure there is awesome and detailed data out there on how effective Sustaining Tenancies $$ inputs have been, based on regular reporting from the various community providers. Including how many, if any, have come back for another bite of the $6mill cherry.

Apparently Te Papa management cannot decide what to do with the Treaty exhibit which was vandalised last year.

I have the solution : they have it repaired, keep it in situ, and charge the feral who damaged it with the repair bill.

Had it not been attacked, the exhibit would presumably still be there for people to judge for themselves. Why should it be removed ?

      The English version was given to Henry Littlewood for safe keeping. Today it is referred to as the Littlewood Draft.

Is it possible that mindless carping about Luxon, Peters and co by narrow minded writers (I nearly put ‘journalist’ but that is too laudatory) like Tova O’Brien will eventually be seen by more readers for what it is? Blatant bias and socialist indoctrination??

I am no fan of either leader and haven’t voted for them but they deserve a longer period to make the necessary changes that had to follow the disastrous six years under Labour. That leaking oil tanker was always going to take many months to come right.

O’Brien’s criticisms are mostly puerile and catty – not worth the space – but they keep undermining and deflecting the public who don’t stop to analyse. Or are they overdoing it? Is there a point when even Stuff readers might say ‘enough’?

  I’d made a brief comment on a councils refusal to consider an option for a dog park on a council owned reserve because of “cultural sensitivity” while proposing alternatives adjacent to residential properties that the residents objected to.

  I don’t think it is a racist statement per se, although there could be racist motivation behind it.
  
  Certainly various human sub-populations have differing genetics in response to their environment. It’s incredibly complex. eg, the gene that protects against malaria also increases the risk of sickle cell disease. So is the anti-malarial gene strong?
  
  Rawiri needs to tell us which maori genes are ‘stronger’. Certainly Maori had weaker genes when it comes to resistance against many western diseases.
  
  But Maori are a physically strong race as an evolutionary response to living in stone age conditions and being in a constant state of war. But, is this good genetics?
  
  Does Rawiri believe Maori are more intelligent? His statement seems it might say that. Certainly genetics is a determinant of intelligence.
  
  If Rawiri answered an NCEA science question like this, he’d fail because he provides no evidence or detail. If nothing else, Rawiri is an example of the state failing to educate Maori.

Why is it everything I see and hear is derogatory by direct implication or by innuendo of anything about the Coalition Government and what they are doing or have said they will do before being well elected.
Cartoonists are beyond belief – no further comment.
Some school children are of the belief that there is no consequences to there deliberate actions principled apparently by the Maori Haka, which in itself is pure violence.
There are no consequences, which like their adults, they are fully of the belief that they are invincible.
How sad and disappointing that the media have felt no need to resile from their bitterness, and feel that have have a reasoned responsibility to our Country.
No wonder many, but not all, of the children revel in what we can call Anarchy of the childish sort.

Could not but wonder this morning when I heard our Prime Minister Christopher Luxon being interviewed by some “Holier Than Thou Guy”. Known as a Legend in his own mind .
My impression was the PM was being deliberately question in a perceived bullying type of interview by the self appointed Legend.
Maybe he was out to get a Headline for his NZME employer alias NZ Herald .
He also interviewed NZs Politician of the present time . Winston Peters yesterday.
Yes he was like lets say “normal” with him.
Maybe he forgot some time ago when he declared Winston Peters would not get back on his programme .He knew that Peters would not let “Holier Than Thou Bully” him any which way in his interview, like he attempted with our PM .

  Well said Oldpark. The PM will give details on tax cuts at Budget time in May (not in March for the benefit of the ZB Breakfast or Drive show hosts – their arrogance and egos are getting way ahead of them).
  
  Also Luxon is consulting with Seymour and Peters before any announcements are made. I see that as a commitment to the Coalition agreement between the 3 parties by Luxon and demonstrates his respect for Seymour and Peters.
  
  For some reason Hosking and HDPA seem to have an issue with this type of approach. What do they want? A Helen Clark type dictating what will happen on their own terms? BS spin? No thanks!
  
  Luxon isn’t a seasoned politician using spin for answers eg Clark, Key, Ardern, Hipkins etc (thank goodness). He is being straight up and like any good CEO he has confidence in his “senior management” i.e. Peters and Seymour (and Cabinet) by conferring with them (before the MSM who are demanding to know “now”) and is leaving them to get on with things in their own style and in their own way.
  
  And that’s what their supporters like (despite the negative headlines from the rest of the MSM & Labour etc).

The conversation about asking if KO are capable of doing what the government is asking of them was a good conversation. Asking about new taxes in the budget is topical, as people are spreading that. And asking when the tax’s cuts will happen is a good question. There is nothing wrong with this interview.     I agree – I heard it live. Nothing significantly wrong with the interview from Hosking or Luxon IMO.
    
    Luxon, I think could have answered some of the questions better (couldn’t we all….?) and Hosking seemed to get unnecessarily wound up at some of the answers.
    
    My sense is the Govt (all coalition partners) are setting up for a major Budget announcement come May whereby all the dirty sheets are hung out and we get some big changes mapped out for the next 3 years.

  Chuck – this reminds me of one of the tests my 95 year old Uncle had a few years ago when being assessed for a rest home. He was asked to repeat (may not be verbatim)the following:
  
  Mr Smith lives at 76 Jones Street, Woodville, Hawkes Bay.
  
  Uncle did so perfectly but stopped after Woodville so was asked to repeat it which he again did perfectly stopping after Woodville.
  
  When asked why he stopped after Woodville each time – he said:
  
  Woodville is not in Hawkes Bay.
  
  He passed the test and moved to a rest home a few months after where he died a few weeks after his 97th birthday.

  A road test by someone trained to do this is the way to go. Not a Driving Instructor – they can’t drive for shit. They go by the manual, not common sense. Small things like how much attention is being paid, and the driver turning to look at you when they are speaking to you – there is no need.

  From 80 you have to have a medical every 2 years to renew your licence. I have had 4 so far.
  The ‘test’ that really pisses me off is one conducted by a nurse (extra charge) when she does your blood pressure, and checks that you still know your way around the supermarket. It consists of a printed list of random words that has to be repeated back in order. If you can’t get at least half of them right, you are at risk of not getting your licence renewed.
  Who repeats lists of randomly chosen words ? Most of my life has been spent speaking clearly so that others can understand what I have to say.

  Heh. My son did an engineering degree a few years ago and in one course they looked at engineering failures, including the loss of the Challenger space shuttle in 1986.
  
  One of the aspects covered was the lack of diversity in the engineering teams of the day – meaning too many white men like my son.
  
  Luckily he was more amused than offended as the lecturer looked to be close to rolling her eyes and was clearly following a script. Not to mention the many Asian students who audibly scoffed.

The case of the 2 brothers who tussled with the Thai police officer is interesting.

Thailand is a nation of corrupt cops. Bribery is expected to escape fabricated breaches of law.

Could one’s legal defence be that Thailand is a corrupt nation with dodgy cops and these brothers were fearing for their safety?

Presumably these brothers have lived pretty respectable lives to this point and there is no obvious explanation as to why they’d suddenly act out of character (unless I am wrong about that). Whatever the case, their world has changed for the worse.

In New Zealand the most severe punishment that can be imposed is imprisonment. We should not be celebrating prisoners torturing and raping other prisoners.       Otherwise it will be like two horrible precedents:
      
      – Stalinists’ use of common criminals to rule over and punish other inmates of the Gulag – inmates who were overwhelmingly imprisoned for political crimes.
      
      – The use of kapo’s, selected concentration camp inmates, to control, torture, and kill other inmates.
      
      Judith Collins, when Corrections Minister in 2009, welcomed a decision allowing “double bunking” – confining prisoners two to a cell.
      
      The prisoner officers’ union opposed the move, and in November 2021 it was reported there had been more than 150 allegations of sexual assault in New Zealand prisons in the previous five years.

      “Where sleeping accommodation is in individual cells or rooms, each prisoner shall occupy by night a cell or room by himself or herself.   Maggie, from Luxon’s lips this morning..’there will be no new taxes’. A bit of GST history.
  
  ‘GST was introduced on 1 October 1986 by the Minister of Finance, Roger Douglas at a rate of 10% on goods and services. It replaced existing sales taxes for goods and services. In 1989 GST was increased, again an action initiated by the Labour Party with Deputy Prime Minister, Helen Clark and Prime Minister, Geoffrey Palmer taking GST to 12.5%.[4] 21 years on in 2010, GST was raised again by the National Party’s Prime Minister, John Key, taking GST to 15%.
  
  GST was introduced in conjunction with compensating changes to personal income tax rates and removal of many excise taxes on imported goods’.
  
  I recall Key said he didn’t campaign on an increase but then he looked at the books. Our books now are immensely worse than 2010.

      UK is 20%, although there are cheaper rates for different categories such as kids clothes and food
      Makes sense for a country that changed to the metric system of weights and measures except for miles for distance and feet and inches for people’s height

  I’ve been saying for years that this would happen after English did it for “revenue neutrality”. Considering that a lot of Euro VAT’s (basically a GST) are at 20% I figure that’s where we’ll end up.
  
  Oh, and BTW, Labour will reverse any other tax cuts next time but not GST, so once again this is just helping the State to grow larger.

    Only superficially so.
    
    Circumcision in boys involves only the removal of the foreskin and it has little, if any, impact on sexual enjoyment and the other functioning of the penis.
    
    So-called female circumcision generally involves removal of the clitoris and, hence, greatly diminished capacity for sexual enjoyment. It often also involves infibulation, which can cause a range of problems, including difficulty urinating, menstrual problems, and difficult labour.
    
    I was snipped as an infant, for therapeutic reasons, and I am sure that virtually all women who have been mutilated wouldn’t regard it as comparable to FGM.

Thank You New Zealand.
For putting on a sunny day.

I arrived back in the the land of “”clean and cold”” yesterday lunch time.

I allowed extra time to clear immigration/customs due to an item I read about a week or so about how long it took to get processed.

Either that was a oncer, mis information or cause of change.

When I cam back to Auckland in 2022 the plane was about 25% full. Everyone had to wear a mask and be surrounded by empty seats.

Processing on arrival was slow and bureaucratic and very slow to get to the doors to the outside (nearly 2 hours)

This time flight 99% full, of which only a handful of non brown faces.. The guy I sat next to was an ARAB from Dubai, travelling on a NZ passport and fluent in Kiwi!!!!

Yesterday arrival was fantastic. Lots of electronic immigration gates. No waiting.
Then to a set of screen people to see if I had anything to declare. again no waiting quick processing.

Got an express sticker, then to go get my bag and to the new Express clearance lane. No bag xray, just a wee doggie sniffing me and my bag.

Then streetside all in less than 20 minutes(from immigration to streetside)

Well done Auckland airport.

Now to rediscover what real kiwis(guys at the pub and family) think about whats happening in the land of the long white shroud and xl women.

Guessing it might be different to the view of many commenters on KB.

the murder of baby Ru in a Kaianga Ora tenement.
Police know who the suspects are but it’s all gone very quiet. What a disgrace.
Didn’t they send a team all the way to Seoul to arrest a woman there
for killing her children. Taita is only round the corner from PHQ.

A judge described the footage of a Kiwi man kicking and punching his Australian partner as “chilling”.

That Kiwi man, Tahu Ford Brooke, will now be deported back to Aotearoa after failing to appeal his visa cancellation at the Administrative Appeals Tribunal of Australia.

  than, we record the Chase every night and tonight I let the video roll onto One news for about 4 minutes. From the te reo opening it was as you say a hit on Winston, how Luxon will tell him off for his ‘nazi references. Then FGS they started on Winston’s theme music at the venue and how the musicians involved wrote it ‘to be positive, not negative like NZFirst’.
