  The rainbow crossings are illegal. The correct approach would have been to take the Council to court.

  The paint on the treaty was, in my view, a heinous crime. If the a merry cans judiciary can hand out 22 year jail sentences for the Capitol riots(it wasn’t an insurrection that the media keep insisting it was). Then the violators of the treaty should have got at least 5 years in the slammer.

Now, here’s a story with which anyone who walks The Terrace will concur!

The Ugandan government has instructed all civil servants to spend two hours a week doing physical exercise to keep them fit and healthy.

The directive was shared in a letter to government agencies from the head of public service, Lucy Nakyobe, who said the sessions would “help save the lives of staff and reduce the disease burden”.

Regarding the signs for Maori and Pasifika Only Spaces at Auckland University.

I would encourage those who are against these to actively go in to these spaces, and if they are challenged simply state “I Identify as Maori” or “I Identify as Pasifika”

Apparently it works for transgender Women in Women Only places…

      Shuts down? “Replies to” would be the description in an objective report.
      
      When local families controlled NZ newspapers, they acted as a balance to the Left-tilt of unionised journalists (and in those days, printers). The Otago Daily Times is the only bigger NZ daily paper still controlled by a family, and it shows.
      
      For the Herald, Brierley at first edged in with a stake. Irish investors bought it, then gained full control, and in 2002 switched it into their Australian subsidiary.
      
      In 2016, NZME, the Herald’s present owner, was “demerged” and listed on the NZ Stock Exchange.
      
      Its owners are diverse and widely spread – hedge funds, funds managers, and the like. Not the sort of owners who would give a rat’s arse about objective v. biased reporting.

    No Simon. By Identifying as someone you are not, it forces the Woke Ideologues to either stick to their wider principles and let you in, or, (and this is the desired response), tell you that you cannot identify as something you are not.

      I saw a great meme that had a photo of a waiting room in the south of the US in the 50s or 60s which had a sign above it saying “ coloured People” and next to it a sign on a door in a modern university in the states which said “People of Colour”. One acceptable to the Uber sophisticated post modernist and one despicable but both saying exactly the same thing. Orwell I believe once wrote that some ideas were so ridiculous that they could only be believed by academics.

    Fun fact. When the Pentagon was designed, segregated toilets and lunchrooms were provided to meet the segregation laws of Virginia (the Pentagon is just outside the District of Columbia) with ‘whites only’ signs erected. President Roosevelt saw this and ordered the signs be removed. The Virginia Governor protested but Roosevelt said it was a Federal building for Federal employees so segregation is not going to apply.

  Back in the early 1990s there had long been a student common room reserved for Maoris, with a separate one then added for Pacific Islanders. There were also separate common rooms for women and for homosexuals. Obviously there were no common room reserved for males or white people.
  
  This disparity actually got discussed at some kind of student debate in the Quad, which likely would never happen these days. Some student council representative argued that the games room (fitted with snooker tables etc.) was a de facto ‘white male space’, despite everyone who wanted to use the facilities being welcome. Not quite fair, but also not entirely unreasonable I thought to myself. . .
  
  Then next semester they closed down the games room and it became student council offices.
  
  A random question or two.
  
  When and why did Pacific Island become “Pasifika” in English? I’m no linguist, but presumably the various languages of the Pacific Islands (which do not even all belong to a single language family) would each have completely different words to describe this concept? Even if they use their own variants of Pacific, presumably they would spell them differently.
  
  Are Filipinos, Malays and Indonesians (not the Chinese ones obviously!) allowed to use the seating areas reserved for Maoris and Pacific Islanders at Auckland University?

        It’s unlikely National will ever govern alone again.
        
        Peters on his feet is entertaining. He talks like an old-time politician addressing everyone at a local meeting.
        
        Pick out someone at the back of the hall and talk loudly to that person, was the advice of an old-time NZ political fireball, the one-armed World War 1 veteran John A. Lee.
        
        Many politicians now are microphone-trained, soft-mumble bores.

    The had an American pilot on board who has guided thousands of vessels under the bridge. It’s apparent the vessel twice lost power before it drifted into the bridge.
    
    Well done to the authorities on land who were able to close the bridge within 90 seconds of receiving a distress call from the ship.

      It looks more like the ship was deliberately steered into the pier. But I prefer to believe your take on it.
      
      I struggle to understand how that type of ship can loose total power without assistance.
      
      The smoke stack does indicate a full steam ahead “instruction” directly after the initial electrical outage.
      
      We should soon know what caused the event. A spectacular mess.

        Ships lose power for all reasons, sometimes very trivial, sometimes unexplainable. A container ship I once sailed on, lost power due to the blackout caused by a crushed indicator light bulb in the changeover switch, which caused a short circuit and knocked out the control power for the main engine.

        But this incident points to a bad design or a bad operational practice if there was no foul play. Redundancy is an important design consideration and older designs and infrastructure often lack redundancy. This should be a totally avoidable incident.
        
        Shit happens but this one should have been avoided. As someone pointed out elsewhere, where bridge abutments are at risk and vulnerable a tug boat should have been in attendance.

        The video seems to show that the ship veers off to the left away from the “pylon” aggressively at the “last moment”.
        I think that is how a ship will behave when it closes in on an obstruction such as the “pylon”. Just like when you cayak in white water.

        Rangitīkei – That’s right. About mid 1980s. He took the liner through a passage that wasn’t big enough given the rocks underwater. Talk was that he was drunk but I think that anything beyond rumours was all suppressed.
        
        It’s a popular dive location now – quite a few divers have died out there.

    I watched the stream of the incident.
    2 power outages on the vessel immediateley prior to the collision. And emrgency measures – full astern that did not work as anticipated.
    Not sure that nationality of the Master and Chief would have had any impact on the event.
    The vibrations you can feel are the hordes of lawyers rushing to represent the interests of Owners, Charterers, Crew, Cargo Interests, those who lost thier lives, the port of Baltimore, the city of Baltimore and anyone who will have their lively hoods ruined by the absence of the bridge and the closure of the port.

  Following the collapse of the bridge over the Derwent (Tasmania) some years ago, large ships have had to have a tug in attendance. Also modern bridges of this sort are now designed to stay up even if one pier is knocked out.

    There’s no way the main span of that bridge could have stayed up if a pier failed
    However the pier had no protection in the case of such a collision, which may or may not have saved the day
    Putting aside the obvious tragedy of the situation there will be a few engineers who love this sort of thing, but they dare not show it

  Normal cargo ship would have to way off course. The Navy & sugar refinery have reasonable sized vessels that go past but thats about it. Then just smaller ferry boats.
  
  Anyway Akl habour bridge was build when NZ was a first world country. It would be fine.

  Sure, rape etc should not be happening. But they do. And they are most likely to happen in high risk environments, (places, situations and people). If the vulnerable young females plugged in some common sense and avoided these high risk environments then well over 90% of these events would not happen.
  
  As for the “serious criminal offending” other than rape, judging from the fights you see on social media, young women face more danger from other violent thuggish young women than from men.
  
  In my youth avoiding high risk situations was called “being sensible”.
  
  I am far more worried about the way they treat the kids who have no choice in the matter.

She says “Dude, you’re charging $1200 for a picture you painted of me. You’re from Africa. You’ve been in Aotearoa 5 minutes and assumed it’s okay to take a complete strangers face and make money off it.”.

Questions: Wasn’t the older white woman in Christchurch shopping at the lipstick counter slammed in media and charged by police for saying “Don’t worry she’ll be going home soon” to a middle eastern woman. How is saying dude you’ve only been here 5 minutes different?

Taking a complete strangers face with a moko and making money off it is not ok, but Drag is being celebrated at the local library. How are they different?

The artist says “Moko tattoos have always inspired me as i have numerous tattoos myself…this is a tribute to my new home, rugby, tattoos and the deep spiritual connections…etc.”
Sounds like he is identifying with Moko. I mean if he identifies it’s cool isn’t it.

Is Oriini a MERF? A Maori Exclusionary Radical. Or is it only Gender that has to be inclusive.

Then I saw the artist’s profile and saw he was African but white and now i know why he’s getting slammed.

        This is a taste of what will be big issue as cheap artificial intelligence programs allow production of highly realistic copies of art work.
        
        You will need to be an expert to tell what is original.
        
        The fine-picture you link to, Ghost, lists Turumakina Duley as the copyright owner. He is a tattooist on the Australian Gold Coast who specialises in Maori work.
        
        Isn’t the position that the photographer (or photographer’s employer) owns the copyright, unless the subject commissioned the photograph?
        
        The picture you link to Ghost, suggests Duley commissioned the source photograph, or he or an employee or associate, took it.
        
        An issue is whether you restricted from making an artistic copy or interpretation if you acknowledge both that it is that and identify your source?

        But that’s not what they are complaining about (copy of a photograph), and I doubt copying the photo would be considered illegal. The artist isn’t trying to pass his work off as the original, so there’s no forgery being committed. As someone else said, the original photo was used as a reference, which is not that unusual in the art world. I will admit as the husband of an artist that it’s bad practice to use a photo covered by copy right (if these even are covered) without making significant changes so the original and the “copy” are significantly different, but I doubt its illegal in this situation.
        The complaint is specifically about painting her without permission, NOT about copying the photo.
        I agree however that the artist is wrong to have painted someone without permission. This would be the same as an photographer selling recognisable photos of people without permission.

    Can you photograph/paint a picture of someone without their permission. Yes.
    
    The NZ CAB says, “If you are taking a photograph for commercial purposes (for example, to use in an advertisement) and the person can be identified in the photo, you will have to comply with the Privacy Act.
    
    You should ask the person for their permission, and tell them who you are and how you will use the photo.”
    
    But then did the person who painted Ardern and Trumps likeness on an orange, seek the permission of both parties? What about the Bloomfield t towels?
    
    But the article’s focus was on her race and her Moko. And the question I was really framing is that why is sex and gender appropriation celebrated, but ethnic and racial appropriation taboo.

I emailed the Gisborne Mayor yesterday to point out that the rainbow crossing she said had been vandalised by the Destiny Church people had no legal standing as a pedestrian crossing. She also said that the rainbow crossing would be reinstated.

I also advised her that, if some unwitting pedestrian got hit by a car on a rainbow crossing, her Council could be held responsible.

I’ll let KBers know if I get a response.

  I was thinking the same thing yesterday when Council said the whiting out of the crossing had made it unsafe, surely a rainbow crossing is also not adhering to safety guidelines for a pedestrian crossing, regardless of your thoughts on rainbows, pedestrian crossings should not be used as a political point scorer they are are safety issue. Next there will be rainbow cones, which would actually make a nice change from all the orange ones.

    for a white/zebra crossing you must stop. The rainbow one has no status as a legal pedestrian crossing so if a driver didn’t stop and hit someone, I don’t imagine they can be charged.

      We see in this how the sausage gets made. Illegality is fine as long as it’s for the right cause. Deface Te Papa’s TOW exhibit and the museum simply removes the English version and leaves the Maori, which was the intention all along. Would the Maori have been removed if it had been defaced? Like hell. Destiny removes an illegal crossing and the council promises to replace it with a new illegal rainbow crossing. This story is primetime news so where’s NZTA? Where’s WorkSafe? Hell, where’s the concern from the cops who have to enforce the road rules?

      Correct, but the diamond well before the crossing in law means that a pedestrian may not cross if a vehicle is between the diamond and a crossing. Which begs the point of all these new combined pedestrian/cycle crossings (the cycle part in green). There is a Give Way JUST before the crossing instructing to give way to pedestrians and cyclists. So what in law takes precedence – the Give Way sign or the diamond (for pedestrians). Must check this one out….

    I checked on Copilot to see if road vehicles are obliged to stop at rainbow crossings and this is what it said:
    “In New Zealand, rainbow crossings are not officially recognized as standard road markings. Therefore, road vehicles are not specifically obliged to stop at them.”
    
    I also asked whether road vehicles were obliged to stop at zebra crossings, and Copilot said:

  One of the reasons the prices are high is the losses supermarkets have to pass on.
  Never mind the gouging shit, that is another subject.
  So, if you see it, grab 4 guys to help and just stop them. These bastards are cunning. I saw a robbery at Countdown Glenfield. Grabbed a guy and said I will get the trolley and you get him away. Out in the carpark the thief had taken off his jacket and hat and sunnies. Gone!

  That was the British Government’s attitude when it dismantled counter-espionage and codebreaking capability after WW1 – ‘gentlemen do not read each others mail’. This was after the Brits had cracked the Zimmerman telegram which led to USA joining the Brits against the Germans. Also the Brits did not want people to know that they had cracked that particular code. Fortunately the German Embassy in Washington DC had on-transmitted the Telegram to its other embassies in middle – south America using a second tier code which the Brits had also cracked.   The common element in both rides and bridges is that they are designed to be self supporting structures that are exposed to stresses at selected points.
  
  When the stresses happen in unexpected places then the whole structure fails.
  
  There’s a saying in engineering: “Engineering is the art of compromise.”
  
  Engineers need to weigh up safety vs cost vs convenience vs a myriad of other factors. If we just focused on safety you couldn’t afford it.

Tainui Group Holdings and Auckland Airport just brought their $200 million project, the Te Arikinui Pullman Auckland Airport Hotel, to a close.
The hotel, located 100 metres from the airport’s international terminal, officially opened its doors on December 12 after four years of construction.
Tukoroirangi Morgan, chair of the executive committee of Waikato-Tainui, said the completion of the 311-room five-star hotel expressed the significance of this location to the iwi.
“Everything from the chiefly name of this hotel to its three-pointed star shape and the unique cultural designs, express the mauri (essence) of this important site for Waikato.”
Review. BONG! The $50 daily Valet Parking charge for my own vehicle 6 day stay adds up, I was not expecting that, after paying $420 a night.
Quiet rooms. Much less crappy advertising material in the room than the same price Novotel next door. Clean and simple beige Iron and white Marble room architecture.
No swimming Pool, this is New Zealand. Gym is perfect.
Surprisingly cheap room service menu, $42 for a Sirloin Steak cheaper than getting an UBER Delivery. Cooked properly, good smokey fresh Kumara chips.
Too much Maori language around the place, it is getting boring. What is the point, nobody reads it. Nobody.
The Wining and Dining Room Service Menu has large Maori Language Titles, even a whole page in Maori, with tiny English subtitles, as if staying and paying at this Hotel is simply an adjunct to the symbolism of what can only be described as a Mighty Tainui Waratah planted as a territorial right of claim straight through the heart of Auckland Iwi Ngāti Whātua, Kawerau a Maki, Tainui, Ngāti Pāoa, Wai-O-Hua and Ngāti Rehua.
I called Room Service, got a call back, the dreaded New Zealand blowback “We’re ACTUALLY REALLY BUSY RIGHT NOW, it will take longer than an hour”.
The Hotel is less than half full and is obviously running at a loss for the Waikato Owners, so short staffed to save money, more likely.
I hope that the Owner’s are aware that giving mates rates to Hapu and Whanau will be the demise of this Hotel in short order, as Government spending is drying up fast.

Been the case ever since I was a teenager Maggy and I turn 78 in a couple of weeks. There were some dodgy looking people hanging round and operating the sideshows since forever.

As an example 3 mates and I headed down to the river at Waipukurau with a few flagons the night before showday in 1964 only to be met by the local Sergeant and a constable. We received a lecture and were told to get out of it – thankfully as 3 of us were still at High School.

Turns out they were looking for a guy from the sideshows who had tried to rape a local girl the night before.

Another example of how Labour abandoned the ordinary working people of NZ.

“Beautician” work has long been a job or career for young women (let’s be realistic) in NZ. Interesting work for young women who didn’t have desire for an academic-skills job, or whose family didn’t ave the money, to send them to university.

Labour lowered the skill provisions for immigration to let beautician-type workers come in.

We quickly have a huge number of tiny parlours in malls, suburban shopping strips, all run by immigrants, overwhelmingly from Asia. For many, families to follow them here.

And a career path is closed to hundreds, perhaps thousands, or moderate-skill NZ youngsters.

RULING: NO GROUNDS TO PROCEED
TO BE PUBLISHED ON MEDIA COUNCIL WEBSITE ON 2 APRIL 2024
This complaint was prompted by an article published by the NZ Herald on 5 January 2024 and
headlined Laura Gemmell: Climate Resolutions – how you can change the world. This was an opinion
piece offering advice on New Year’s resolutions that might help save the planet and warned that red
flags about climate change and biodiversity loss had been repeatedly dismissed as woke baloney.
Chuck Bird did not complain specifically about this story but used it as a basis for a broader argument
that there was lack of balance on climate change in articles and letters to the editor.
“I have followed climate change closely and read books from qualified climate scientists who accept
human emissions cause some global warming but do not believe that there is a climate emergency.”
He said he had asked a NZ Herald reporter if the NZ Herald would publish comment by an American
scientist who had written on the subject.
“I am not sure why the MSM [mainstream media] in New Zealand will not allow balance on the
subject. I hope it is not because of the government funding they received from the previous
government.”
The Herald responded that the article was clearly presented as opinion and was no requirement for it
to be balanced. It added that the NZ Media Council had regularly ruled that readers did not have the
right to be offended and that no one was forcing a reader to read the article, or the newspaper.
“The Herald’s editorial position is that there can be no doubt that human activity has and is
contributing to climate change. Naturally you are welcome to hold your own opinion, but we are
unlikely to provide a platform to anthropogenic climate change deniers.”
Publication of opinion articles was the prerogative of editors and readers could provide feedback on
articles via comments or letters to the editor.
The NZ Media Council concurs with the NZ Herald on this complaint. This was an opinion piece and
there was no requirement for the NZ Herald to run comment countering the now widely stated view,
which is adopted by governments, reputable scientific bodies and many publications – that human
activity is contributing to climate change. It is not the Media Council’s role to take a definitive position
on climate change and its causes and it welcomes articles that challenge assumptions, but it does not
interfere with editorial discretion on this topic. There are no proven factual inaccuracies. Furthermore, counterarguments have been reported over the many years this subject has been debated.
This complaint has not shown how the NZ Herald might have breached any Media Council principles
with this opinion piece or with its editorial stance on climate change.
Decision: There are no grounds to proceed.

This resurgence of segregation I completely and wholeheartedly reject. It is taking us in unhealthy and dark directions.

National should direct them to cut it out or have their funding stopped. As taxpayers we should be up in arms that our taxes are being used to promote this racism in our public institutions.

One of the stated claims of the KKK in its founding documents was the destruction of the Republican Party and they set up a political wing to threaten voters against voting Republicans.
However in a Herald FB post which only certain people can comment on , it refers to Winston Peters claiming the racially segregated space in Auckland UNI, is like the KKK , an alt RIGHT White supremacist group.
I’m confused , I always thought KKK was a group set up by the left wing . Are the modern journalist ill informed or just simply passing misinformation

  The funny thing is, Sean is, shock horror, a climate-scam sceptic (as am I). Yet he will go apoplectic and shut a caller down immediately with insults and shouting over the caller if the caller is merely suggesting the slightest hint of doubt about covid vaccine efficacy and safety. Sean often goes off like this half cocked because he hasn’t even bothered to listen enough to find out what the caller is really on about. It’s a bit weird and pisses off paying subscribers!
