    Precisely. There are 20,000+ extra mouths to feed in Wanaka and the food has to come from somewhere. Three Peaks New World showed on its web site they were opening Friday and Sunday and the other New World (near CBD) would also be opening these days. Seems the authorities have not bothered to prosecute because of public backlash and the relatively small fines available. I suspect MBIE would like to see fines vastly increased but Governments have not been prepared to do this.

      You’d think people could manage the fact that a supermarket won’t be trading for a couple of days, and not even consecutive days. Many at Warbirds will be the types who go on about “self-reliance” and the need for a “pull yourself up by the boot straps” attitude, and rightly so. But all of that evaporates when they can’t handle a supermarket being closed.
      
      It’s not like we don’t have Easter every year, so there’s really no excuse to not know about it – perhaps plan ahead? I did. And another commenter has mentioned that food and drink is available at the event. Serious questions must be asked about people’s ability to cope with mild inconvenience.

        Sure, you can cart food and groceries from all parts of NZ to Wanaka for a few days.

        Some sweeping generalisations there CG. I’m in Wanaka and haven’t heard the issue of supermarkets even come up. People just enjoying the air show and perfect weather. Whatever stereotypes you might like to confer it is a huge influx of people to a small town, so what benefit would there be in having them closed????

        Why does closing a supermarket on a Sunday necessitate taking a weeks worth of groceries on a plane? I don’t understand the connection.

  I read the report. It seems insane that with thousands of people there for a major event they would not have access to a place to buy food and provisions. I liked the inspector from MBIE saying that “he was very disappointed” 🤡😅. The maximum fine for breaching the law is $1000. That is hardly going to deter a supermarket in a place like Wanaka packed with Easter visitors. 😂

  Wānaka is absolutely heaving with local and foreign visitors, most having travelled here by car or air with no ability to bring their groceries even if that was a sensible option. Good on New World for remaining open, supplying product to those visitors who need it, creating more paid work hours for some, even if others would rather sleep in, and saving fossil fuel by not requiring people to travel to Queenstown to top up in their legally open shops. A ridiculous situation in the 2020’s that needs to be dealt with before next Easter.

    The o ly option is drive over the crown ra ge to Queenstown, it’s a cool drive, about 40 mins, then you can freely have lunch or a beer with no restrictions before returning

  But supermarkets do open on Easter Sunday, at least in the several places I’ve been in recent years. They just don’t sell beer and wine, which is the real crime.
  
  If the Queenstown stores have been closed previously that sounds strange for such a tourist destination. I doubt they’ll be selling beer and wine as that is probably penalised by suspension of their alcohol licence.

    Queenstown is exempt, Wānaka isn’t. I believe under lockdown Ardern declared supermarkets were essential businesses, so they should throw that back at the officials and state they are essential shops as declared by Ardern and allowed to open

  There argument is Queenstown are allowed to be open, Wanaka is a similar holiday destination to Queenstown, and Wanaka with the war birds will be pumping. Why should people go over the crown range and shop freely when the businesses in Wanaka are forced to shut and lose market share on a high profile weekend?
  
  I thought National changed the law to let councils decide what to do with the opening hours at Easter, I am sure the wanna district is controlled by the same council as Queenstown

      The case for Israel’s actions in Gaza is so weak that it seems to depend on pretending that there hadn’t already been a century of reciprocal Jewish/Arab conflict before October 7th.
      
      So yeah, Hamas did attack Israel, but the part that gets omitted as an inconvenience is that this was just the latest in a series of retaliations between the parties since at least 1948.
      
      Israel and its supporters will have the world believe that they are the innocent victims of an unprovoked attack, but this is categorically false. It’s not even arguable that this is the context.

        hamas should have known that when they attacked Israel that there would be an aggresive response from them. What hamas got was a reaction from Israel that showed how pissed off with hamas Israel is and gave them a bloody nose and have continued their attack to ensure hamas won’t trouble them again. In 1948 a number of arab countries attacked Israel and Israel won, which has pissed off all arab countries since.   He should probably read up some history of the British Foreign Office because they were long known to have objections to the Jews in the Middle East.

    This was when the British held the reins after driving out the Ottoman Turks.
    
    You can also understand the rise of oil politics in the background. The British Navy, then still the biggest, was coal powered, and its big ships were at a disadvantage against German battleships. The British ships, which had to fight over wider ranges, had to carry more coal, and this affected design compared with the German ships.

    The Drag people are being invited and paid to do this.

  Good on you Scott. In my younger day I would give up beer – believe me, as a hard working building and roofing contractor in Oz, that was a huge sacrifice, and likewise when I returned to NZ.
  But now, in my dotage at just 82 years old, I do give up beer, with the proviso that if it’s hot and I have been working and I really really need a beer, I’m allowed to have one. 😆

On Sunday mornings mrsspdm and I allow ourselves the small indulgence of playing some old time music favourites from You Tube. It could be anyone chosen at random from Connie Francis to Gene Pitney to a mix of songs from the 50’s and 60’s.

This morning the first group chosen was the Howard Morrison Quartet and their original version of Mori The Hori.

Have a listen to this version and tell me the name of any Radio Station bold enough to play it today.

  This looks like a chance to seperate the correct concern, which is the instilling of mental ill health into children via the education system, in the guise of inclusivity.
  It is a travesty to declare these hate crimes in advance of this debate. Social media shows that people are terrified of their children being drawn into the trans cult at any age from 3 to 18, when they are 90% likely to be gay, a settled matter in the west.

I have a friend who has just started a holiday in Vietnam. He asked his driver about electric cars in Vietnam. There are no electric cars in Vietnam and no one has any interest in them.

So while the greens, lefties and Luxon carry on with the mad dash to expensive alternatives and policy that makes our country poorer, some places in the rest of the world just get on with life.

  Data centers produce more greenhouse gases (through consumption of vast amounts of electricity) than the airline industry.
  
  That said, it’s us that use the data running through those data centers. Not that it worries me. I’m in IT but most in the industry are quite woke and it sits uncomfortably with them that all those nasty jet engines are less of a problem than their keyboards.

  There’s just been a break through in 1-bit LLMs where similar performance to existing models has been achieved using only -1,0,1 to encode the weights and can eliminate expensive matrix multiplication of vast arrays of longer numbers from the LLM models.
  
  That is going to reduce power and hardware requirements by up to an order of magnitude and mean that a human brain processing power equivalent processor can be done with just a couple of chips and likely a few 100 watts. Reaction times/throughput also greatly increased
  
  Huge implications for cheap autonomous robots and AI in general once dedicated chips are designed to implement this simpler math.

  It all depends how the council has designated the rainbow on the road.
  
  There are legal crossings (white zebra) and courtesy crossings which are all over the place and usually have those knobby yellow plastic strips that indicate it’s a safe area to cross but vehicles aren’t legally required to stop.

    The more I think about it the more I realise rainbow crossings are absolutely ridiculous and should be banned. Look, I love old cars and belong to a car club, why can’t I paint pictures of old cars on pedestrian crossings? How about painting the RSA flag, or the All Blacks banner or any number of things.   softail – I think NATO realises that they have lost. They have nothing more to throw at the Russians – munitions and men, and as a result they are resorting to terrorism. The US military (& CIA) and the Brits (MI5) had to know about and probably planned the attack on civilians in Moscow.
  
  This has poked there Bear and I think now we’ll see massive destruction of infrastructure used by NATO in Ukraine.

    ISIS was created and used as a pretext to prevent Obama pulling out of Iraq, and “ISIS” performing a terrorist act against Russia then trying to escape into Ukraine may be a good way to provoke a Russian escalation in Ukraine, thus justifying more European resources being pumped into Ukraine rather than admitting defeat and pulling stumps, which seemed to be the direction of travel before the attack.

  Due to congressional deadlock over closing the border the US cut off significant supplies to Ukraine about 6 months back.
  
  Biggest issue has been lack of ammunition particularly missiles for defense. They are the only defense for hypersonic ballistic missiles and Ukraine is now almost out of patriot missiles, able to only defend a few small areas. Due to high ballistic missile re-entry speeds a Patriot battery can only defend a limited area of a few 10’s of km diameter.
  
  Patriot were also able to take down bombers releasing glide bombs 50-100km from front lines. Without that deterrence and defense the Russians are now using greatly increased numbers of glide bombs with impunity.
  
  West has something like 100 batteries sitting around, and produces about 6-700 patriot missiles a year (USA+Japan and soon European production), with many thousands in inventory and production being rapidly increased. But they have only provided Ukraine with five batteries at least one of which has now been destroyed.
  
  Unless the west gives Ukraine a lot more missiles or other means to take out Russian aircraft they are going to start losing a lot of ground. Trench defenses can’t withstand 200-1500kg glide bombs, and ukrainian energy infrastructure is being taken apart by ballistic missiles that can’t be defended against.
