  “Weasel words by MSD.” No the quoted words are not weasel words.
  
  People should be allowed to spend their entitlements how they see fit. People who causes a nuisance should be reported to the authorities and should be dealt with promptly.
  
  Reducing the options to house people who suffer mental health breakdowns (or act anti socially) to hospitals or prisons was not a smart move.

Another story from the missing facts file.

A Philippina wants to stay permanently in NZ but has cancer. She was given a student visa, despite having cancer and has now graduated with a First Class Masters in Contemporary International Studies from the Institute of the United Pacific in Palmerston North (what? where?).

She’s been declined a work visa for health cost reasons, despite her responding well to treatment plus her drug of choice coming off patent in a few months & then plummeting in cost. Seems unreasonable, right?

What’s not stated is who picked up the tab for her treatment while she was a student, including drugs, specialist haematology services etc – I’m guessing it was us.

The kicker? She worked for the Member for Tijuana.

  Regardless of the cost of medication dropping. We should not be granting visas to people with health issues unless their is a massive advantage to NZ in doing so (of they have the funds to gaurantee no cost to NZ). Sure if Elon musk is sick but wants to move here, bring it on. But some pleb with a degree in progressive nothingness aint in that boat.

Drive drunk while already suspended and kill someone. Leave the scene. Don’t worry, you will get your prison sentence halved because you play rugby. Suprised they didn’t let him off altogether.

The weak judges here seem to be having a competition to see who can give the most discount.

Justice Isac adopted a starting point of eight years imprisonment.

He arrived at a sentence of four years and four months, after calculating a 45 per cent discount, taking into account Tuitama’s guilty plea, his young age and the steps he’d taken in rehabilitation.

Justice Isac also noted Tuitama had come from a good home with loving parents and was a promising rugby player. I know you are struggling for players this year in the all blacks but come on now.

Imagine how short the sentence would be if he could have got himself a section 27 report.

He will be out in 2 and get a limited license so he can get to training no doubt…

  The real guts of this crime here was drink driving, while suspended (aggravating), and leaving scene. The death is random chance and probably shouldn’t impact sentencing much. I personally feel 2 years is enough, and don’t see what benefit there is to a higher sentence in this case – just taxpayer expense and higher likelihood of turninng him into a life-long drain on taxpayer. The rugby good family stuff is all irrelevant.

      You’re looking at it the wrong way around.
      
      Why should someone get a lighter sentence just because they had the good luck to not kill someone?
      
      THis should not impact sentencing though. The point is not to let them off lighter, but to rather charge everyone the same regardless of whether or not they cause death or injury.
      
      Treat all recidivist drink driving scum the same. Chuck them in prison.

    According to discussion on newstalkzb this morning, the guy was totally drunk, speeding, didn’t have his contact lenses in (too drunk to put them in), fled from the scene without stopping to ascertain if anyone hurt.
    Pleaded guilty to manslaughter.
    Came from a “very good family “ and had allegedly completed 600 hours of community work.
    Both these used as reasons for a lesser sentence.
    Makes a change from all the people blaming their law breaking causing death on a violent upbringing and colonisation, I suppose.

    Question for you all is what would a longer sentence actually achieve?
    
    I think the most sensible metric for imprisonment (which appears to be something like what is done by govt) is what minimizes long term costs to society; a net present cost if you will. Recidivists and other dangerous people should be put away for longer to reduce potential damage/cost from them and must also be careful to consider costs to population (not just direct costs on govt) with higher personal danger and insurance costs etc
    
    This is a dumb- fuck who doesn’t consider consequence before acting, longer jail term at best prevents recidivism while he’s away – but just cancelling his license and banning vehicle ownership is a lot cheaper than locking him up for $200k/year.
    
    Deterrence effect on others is clearly negligible, particularly in an era where most dangerous demographics don’t listen to news , so longer sentence is not helping anything with that.
    
    And vengeance is a dumb reason from a utilitarian standpoint.

      If you want to be utilitarian about it, a bullet in the brain is cheaper still and has zero recidivism rate. Or if you don’t care about the recidivism rate so much, having no custodial sentences would be a nice cheap option. Or better yet, give everyone a gun and let nature take its course. The survival rate for kiddy fiddlers would go WAY down.
      
      I am not advocating for any of this mind you. I am just pointing out that a least cost utilitarian lense maybe isn’t the best way to view issues of law, order and justice.

      Do you really think that “ just cancelling his license and banning vehicle ownership” will stop this guy from driving again, drunk or not drunk?
      Plenty of people have access to cars that might not be theirs and don’t give two hoots if they have a valid drivers license or or not.
      The focus should be on the victims of this driver – their family and friends – not just shrugging shoulders and saying too bad.
      He should at least be subject to a sizeable fine paid to the child of the woman he killed after which he took off and didn’t bother to look back.

    The reality is, even if you don’t like it (which most of us don’t), Russia was always going to win this war. More soldiers, more weapons, more factories to make ammo. It was game over for Zelensky in April 2022 when he ripped up the Istanbul peace agreement. He can blame the other clownman Borris Johnson for that. Borris said “We can save you”, then a few months later said “sorry, we only have 40 tanks and our army is the smallest its ever been…”
    
    That’s the reality – which doesn’t mean we all join the Russia fanclub – it just means NATO have stuffed up big time.

        If you think Russia wasn’t provoked at all then that is a very biased view – and completely wrong based on the realities of what has actually happened since 1991. That doesn’t mean Putin should start a war – but he was clearly provoked big time.
        
        The Gaza situation I agree is far more complicated and Hamas obviously are evil butchers. All I’m saying is, Israel carpet bombing Gaza doesn’t achieve their stated war objective of eliminating Hamas – so what is the point apart from pure revenge?
        
        Just be honest, it is now mass killing as an act of revenge. Then judge if that is the right or wrong thing to do. Even the US warmongers are saying they now don’t agree with it.

        I recommend that everyone should view the film “Screams Before Silence” about the atrocities committed by hamas terrorists on and after 7 October 2023 and you will then understand Israel’s anger and their strong motivation to hunt down and eliminate every hamas member and follower that they can until there are no hamas terrorists left. Israel will not forget what happened on 7 October 2023 just as they did not forget the terrorist attack and killing of their athletes at the Munich Olympic games in 1972.       I was referring to meeting with them and telling them he thinks they should act responsibly during a financially difficult time period.
      
      But other things off the top of my head…
      
      Alter the local govt act and remove at least the clause you quoted the other day that essentially lets them do anything they want so long as they think its for the benefit of the city.
      
      Add a clause that says n pct (90%?) of funding must go to core services (and spell what they are out). If a council wants to spend 10m on a rainbow crossing they better also be spending 90m on waste and water infrastructure for example.
      
      Total deficit in a year cant be larger the n pct.
      
      The average rate rise over the previous 10 years cannot be more then n pct over rate of inflation for that period. All councils would likely fail this at the moment.
      
      I know that the govt itself has major issues with this stuff too but these local administrators need to have boundries set.

  If councils need a mātauranga Māori framework, can’t they band together and just have one? I’ll answer my own question. It is most likely that each local iwi is demanding a bespoke mātauranga Māori framework.

RFK junior, who tried to walk the abortion vote and election away from Biden by saying abortion up to birth should be up to the mother, subsequently made this statement on X;

“Kindness” unfortunately removed protection from babies in New Zealand, but the kind of thing he describes would never happen here just because it is legal, would it?

        What it doesn’t have is the specific info you’re after, but it does say some abortion requests were turned down on the basis the fetus and mother’s health was not at issue
        1.6% of procedures are classified as ‘later abortions’

        I missed out the abortion is UNRESTRICTED in first 20 weeks. the curse of a small screen. Need to go back to a big one.
        I found the report for 2021 – after the law change. Number of abortions dropped 2010-2020. It shows general abortion rate had dropped 50% since 2010, (: The general abortion rate is the number of abortions per 1,000 of the mean estimated population of women aged 15–44 years.) though the ratio to known pregnancies stayed about the same -20%. Only about 1000 are after first 12 weeks. There were 102 after 20 weeks. From the ages given of those women, I would hazard a guess that many would have been for issues like Downs syndrome or birth defects picked up by ultrasound/ blood tests.

    Simon O’Connor tried to introduce an amendment to the Ardern abortion bill that said if a baby survives an abortion it should not be left to die. This was voted down. I thought Simon was talking about something that may have happened once so I Googled.
    
    I made contact with a woman in the US who survived such an abortion. A nurse was told to let a breathing crying baby to die. Although she assisted in abortions she could not do so. She took baby Melissa to where prem babies were cared for.
    
    If that could not happen here why was O’Conner’s amendment voted down?

  Government debt turn around can occur remarkably quickly. It really only requires two things. First, not borrowing more, in short not running continuous deficits. Second, a growing economy.
  Governments worry about debt as a percentage of GDP, not the absolute number. Since 1990 we have gone from debt at about 60% of GDP, down to 10% in 2008 (Cullen was reasonably strict on spending, at least for the first 6 years). Then rising in two steps to 45% of GDP. The first step being the GFC and Christchurch earthquake and the second step being Covid and Robertson’s failure to restrain the deficit after Covid was over.
  So while 45% is too high, it is not the inevitable harbinger of catastrophe. The government has time to get things right.

    1. Stop the Deficits – sounds like we have another 3 years of these. I’m hoping to be proven wrong, but so far it’s been softly softly (and an expanded school lunch program). Plus interest payments of $10B+
    
    2. Grow the Economy – as a trading nation in the current global climate that is going to be very difficult at best. The economic ‘pulse’ from China growth has now ended. Maybe India free trade can help us out?
    
    I can’t see this one being “turned around quickly” under the current regime.

  Arsenal are about to find out what its like to play against a side that was built by alleged multiple breaches of the financial rules of the league.
  
  Liverpool know what its like to play outstanding football and amass points totals in the mid ninety point range at season end – only to lose the title by a point twice.
  
  City play some nice but boring football – but the club has been put together in an interesting way.
  
  City, a middling club, with little in the way of history in terms of trophies and the second team in Manchester for a very long time.
  
  A team known more for committed supporters used to losing. Suddenly the most valuable brand in football according to its published commercial revenue…. with most of the commercial partners coming from the small state run by Citys owners…. where everything is controlled by the ruling family…
  
  Yip – no related party transactions that breach the rules.
  
  And of course City claim they are innocent of breaching any financial rules of the Premier League …. but are facing only 115 charges under those rules, including multiple charges of not cooperating with the league during the investigation.

      The 115 charges will be settled by a fine and that will be it.

  West Ham are also a very outside chance but Spurs are Arsenal’s best hope. Also note that if Liverpool beat Villa, Spurs still have a theoretical chance at Champions League Football if they beat City and Sheffield AND Villa lose to Crystal Palace. It’s just enough for them to pull out something crazy against City.

If you had read the article you would have noticed that one point was “Predictably, the report sank with barely a ripple, lost in the pre-Christmas frenzy.” Not that it wasn’t reported on but that it was released just before Christmas (note the NZ Herald article is dated Dec 13th), at a time when most people are getting ready for Christmas and a long break.
    As with so many such bad news for the Liebour government reports, they are released at a time when they will get the least attention from the MMA and hence the public.

Current wind power generation at 44MW out of a maximum of 1259MW. Has been < 200 since mid last week (when I started looking at it again).

Makes sense that all of our new generation should be wind right? Note how much Coal is being used.

  wind is driven by changing thermal gradients and tends to be strongest in Spring and Autumn when rate of change in temperatures is largest. More settled and lower wind in mid summer and mid winter, and winter in particular tends to have less wind due to lower solar energy to drive air convection.

  What is obvious from that set of figures is that NZ is already highly supplied by renewable energy in the form of Hydro and Geothermal.
  
  So obviously we have expertise in those generation categories, so it makes a lot more sense to build out those capabilities further and NOT invest in unreliables like wind and solar.
  
  Is there no more Hydro generation sites that are doable?

    The RMA, IWI and green lobby groups have made it practically impossible to build new Hydro or Geo.
    
    Find any piece of land to flood and a greenie will find an animal that is effected. An IWI will require a koha proportional to the spend on the project to pacify the local tuniwhas. Varous neighbours, trampers or hunters will lodge appeals under the RMA.
    
    The reason that all the generation is Wind is becuase it can actually be built. It makes no sense though, we should be looking at more base line power, not more intermittant supply.
    
    Im not against wind. It is cheap and quick to build. The issue is that we have just given up on baseline eneergy construction, and its what we need.

      RoboRob I love the phrase “it’s cheap and quick to build”, in my mind it almost sounds like “the power generated will be cheap and reduce your electricity costs”, but obviously it isn’t and it won’t reduce your power costs. We’ll still need to build more baseload generation or accept that we won’t have power when the wind doesn’t blow. Perhaps that is the way the nation is evolving, the rich will have batteries to tide them over when the wind doesn’t blow and the poor have candles. So are we building twice to serve one need, probably.

    Geo is far better than solar or wind.
    Nuclear SMRs is also a closed loop system. It is always on and you can turn it off or on quickly. Not sure how many to power say Auckland. I am thinking 2 Rolls Royce ones would be enough. Best part is you can put then wherever you want. Not on a hill, not in a geo area, not facing the sun, not in a river.

  Every privately owned rental property in the country was required to install sufficient heating to heat the main living room. In small units this is around 4kW of heating, up to about 6kW in a larger residence.
  
  There are 500,000 privately owned rental properties. How much additional power generation is required if 50% turn on their heat pump for an hour at 7am?

      Actually probably less than 400MW. A good Heatpump is giving over 4:1 return on power input. Heatpumps literally are that, depending on whether you are heating or cooling, they either pump heat into the house from outside, or out from the inside. Working on the same principle as a fridge with expanding gases, 1W of work can result in the gas picking up heat equivalent to what would be produced by over 4W of power, and transfer it into/out of your house. The trick ins that the heatpump isn’t warming the house directly, it’s only shifting the heat around.

    Regardless of who provides the heater tenants can be expected to warm up their dwellings to a comfortable temperature during the winter and heat pumps are more efficient than other contraptions
    On the other hand the houses/flats/apartments/hovels could be unheated leaving the surplus electricity available for the well off to heat their entire houses.

      The real question here is when the government makes a policy they should think about the broader consequences. If I require all homes to install a heater how much extra power production do we need? If this many people convert to EVs how much more power generation do we need? Surely they should be acting on both ends of the system, not just driving increasing demand. Then surprise surprise we have an energy problem.
      
      As for leaving excess power for the well off, who are these well off you speak of? I suspect in the lefty tradition it will mean anybody with money except myself. Gotta love those politics of envy and hypocrisy!

  A quarter say their training was ineffective? I’ll bet that another quarter found it ineffective but said nothing about it and a further quarter are ineffective because they just are not a good fit.
  
  I am unsurprised they are incapable of teaching science. Primary-level science, and primary-level maths, is beyond most of the people attracted to becoming teachers (in my limited experience).

        Ah, the old “they only work 35 hours a week and look at all those holidays” mantra.
        My daughter is a primary teacher: she has a double-degree from Vic, followed by a one-year post-grad teaching qualification.
        She has taught in Indonesia, London and here.
        Her week-days are made up of before-school preparatory work, normal class time, after-school preparation, meetings, marking, self-improvement and keeping up to date, parent-teacher communications, sports, mentoring, and plenty more.
        You try looking after 32 kids 5 days a week: making sure they all get the attention they deserve, that your teaching standard is as high as possible, that all day and every day you set an example to them.

        From my experience and observations, the hard-working teachers are working long hours because they are having to carry the can for ineffective teaching colleagues, a very loose, ill-defined curriculum, and poorly directed support structures (teacher aides, pupil counsellors, truancy officers, teacher advisors).

  The truth is with teacher training is that many of the students are themselves lacking knowledge in what they are supposed to teach.
  
  The role of teacher education institutions should be teaching knowledgable people HOW to teach. Its called pedagogy. NOT teaching them basic knowledge.
  
  I have seen students who are just about to graduate who don’t know how to use a calculator, didn’t know that the earth went round the sun, and didn’t know what caused light and dark. I kid you not.
  
  A huge proportion of student’s time is now taken up with Marxist maorification. There is no solution to this until Erica Stanford sorts out the teacher training mobs.

      If school worked as it should, anyone entering teacher’s training would have the basic knowledge they need to teach others. All teacher’s training should need to do is provide the teaching skill and reinforce the previously learned knowledge.

  That’s quite a good article.
  Primary school teachers used to be trained at Teachers Training Colleges. The courses were practical, and the teachers had classroom experience with experienced teacher, and were often mentored during their first placements in local primary schools, called ‘normal Schools’- which were attached to the training colleges.
  Then it was decided that Universities should take over and it was all downhill – universities were designed for higher education, not basic learning.

‘The awards are held at the Aotea Centre. Not many people ever attend. The back half is generally empty. It makes for a barren experience, and it’s usually cold, too. Fake ferns are placed onstage. The similarly lifeless Jack Tame is placed onstage as Ockham MC, and routinely delivers a perfectly meaningless opening monologue with scarcely a single detailed reference to the 16 shortlisted books. As for the 16 shortlisted authors, they have to sit next to each other in the same row! Good grief. In short, it’s a deplorable exercise, but such is the nature of awards ceremonies.’

      kowtow: Braunias wrote an assassination piece on me for Metro five years after I had left politics. He and his photographer spent two whole days in the village of Kaukapakapa trying to dig dirt on me (I was informed within thirty minutes that they were there). Kaukapakapa is a “blink and you’ll miss it” village comprising a school, a general store, a hairdressers, and a gas station. Braunias was ordered off the school grounds – the principal immediately advised me they were there – and similarly got nowhere with the other people in the village. (The hairdresser called me and told me she had told him to “fuck off” in exactly those words)
      
      He eventually managed to locate a former neighbour who accurately described herself as “the biggest bitch in Kaukapakapa” who gave him some dirt. He was so determined to find some more that he contacted some guy in Australia I had gone to school with – and had not seen since – and my former headmaster. I left school at the end of 1974.
      
      He got my half-brother drunk, and winkled out some information about what I was like at age four – I kid you not – and some sensitive family information. The article destroyed my fragile relationship with one of my sisters, who is an obsessively private person.

I have been wondering how people get taken in by these scams. Are they cold-called, texted or emailed? I have more than $ 500k in shares but deal with a broker. Anyone know how these scams work?

  People get sucked into scams because they never learned that if it sounds too good to be true, then it is too good to be true. They got sold a get rich quick scheme or lend me X and I’ll give you back 10X, etc.
  I’m still amazed that the infamous Nigerian scam still works. Does anyone really believe that someone sitting on millions of $$$$ will contact a total stranger asking for help.
  But then is suppose a sucker is born every day.

  But, it wasn’t.

    The Goldcorp scam was convincing investors that the gold they purchased (that they could sight) was safely held in trust. The company sold “unallocated gold certificates”, holding the real gold in its vaults. But it turned out there was not enough gold to go around, and what was there was claimed by funder BNZ. The gullible investors lost out.
    The architect of the scam, Ray Smith, spent time at one of the prison farms down country; IIRR he designed a golf course for inmates.

      He was acquitted of fraud (in relation to the “not enough gold to go around” claims) but convicted and imprisoned for quite separate offences under the Insolvency Act.

    Ancestry dot com did it to me. Set up an account for my daughter to use and paid with a BNZ Debit card. Someone tried but missed out – so the Bank told me. Some place in Africa doing online gambling.

  Absolute financial naivety/stupidity, that’s how they work. It’s beyond belief that someone with $500 thousand to invest would not be registered with a Broker. Any decent brokerage would charge less than most Kiwisaver annual costs to invest that sort of money, probably around the 1% mark. (You do have to ask though) . And you will get invited to their investment seminars, they don’t cut corners when it comes to the food and wine.

      Go read Jarden Wealth Managements website. Will give you a feel for what a wealth manager can do for you and fee structures.
      
      To be honest – if you want to invest in shares and not do the research ETFs that passively track a bundle of stocks like top 30 will serve you well enough over a 10 year run

Ha ha , government is saying anyone that has been waiting more than 4 months for specialist need to be contacted and to get updated referrals.

Last time we needed (couple of years back), my son was waiting nearly 12 months before getting seen by a specialist.

It’s a joke, there is no way they can recover this quickly.

  Afte my comment to you I had a call from North Shore Hospital about a cancelled appointment to see a specialist for rotor cuff tear. I took it.
  This is the second time around now of seeing a specialist – after 3 separate x-rays at different times. The system is going in circles. Admin is the problem, 5 people doing 1 person’s job.
  I do hope this turns out good, the pain is increasing even with heavy meds.

I read that Professor Robert Patman won the Critic and Conscience award. I don’t really want to criticise him while using a pseudonym but he was described as ‘fearless’. While I am clearly not fearless, I do think that the Professor does tend to lean towards positions of neutrality rather than criticise China. Whereas he has a greater tendency to criticise right leaning Western governments.

Got a bit riled earlier when I herd about AT imposing 24/7 hourly parrking charges in the CBD from 1 July.
Then jusy watching OneEwes before and realised by the look of the people they intervewd who woud be afected by it, they probaly wouldnt be ratepayers anyway.

Certainy doesnt worry us.
