Is it just me or is being a man in the Green Party in Parliament a lot like being a Pakeha in Te Pati Maori?

  Yes indeed isn’t bizarre slightly that they have two leaders originally so that they would be representative but end up with two women. Apparently it’s ok because they do different things in the bedroom so still representative. Such a bunch of clowns.

    Its my fault. I wrote a few years back and suggested that by requiring a male and female coleadership they were taking a position of power away from women. Just when women were getting to be CEOs and govt leaders, the dumb party says “hey, lets not allow women to lead on their own, lets have a coleadership”. My guess is after that letter they changed their arrangement to be one woman, one maori. My idea was to sow dissent and hopefully further increase their opportunity for demise. Result I think.

    Yes. If people can be called Maori with 1/512 (or some tiny amount I have heard mentioned) then half Irish Debbie Packer is definitely pakeha. And others I’m not familiar with the heritage of but are certainly there.

The MSM are asking how it can be cheaper for the taxpayer to pay consultants twice the rate for doing the same work as MinEd staff. Let me count the ways …
* Consultants will work for 8 hours per day.
* No karakia training, no cake Tuesdays.
* No unlimited sick leave (yep, still a thing, though covid is over).
* No departmental days in addition to annual leave.
* No paid Union meeting time.
* No projects that simply drift out in time.

And, when the project ends, the consulting fees stop.

  Also, there are Union rules re who can be made redundant meaning you have to get rid of the good workers before those with effective tenure. It’s illegal to rehire the good workers in the same roles so they have to contract them.
  
  It wouldn’t be an issue if the employer could simply make the worst employees redundant (which would by a complete coincidence remove most of the Union agitators too).

    The second Manapouri tailrace tunnel. Admittedly Meridian had good geotechnic data from when the original tunnel was bored. There were no workplace fatalities when the second tunnel was bored (there were some with the original tunnel). Also the electricity grid exit points required for ‘think big’ projects were generally completed on time.

Mike Hosking this morning interviewed Jess Winchester, GM of the Stroke Foundation. She and no doubt others are pushing for salt reduction in food via mandatory regulation. Because, she said, salt is a big high blood pressure contributor and risk factor. And Ms Winchester said New Zealanders could be risking their lives every time they buy a pie.

She also said 75% of strokes can be prevented and it would be amazing if that could be reduced by salt regulation.

Anyone listening to that would come away convinced that salt can be a terrible thing and the government needs to step in. Or just maybe a suspicion of hyperbolic activism.

However, there has been a lot of health related research into dietary salt in recent years. Some of it contradicts what Ms Winchester said today.

No doubt there is research that supports her position, but there remains that same old story – activism and science. I wonder how Ms Winchester would have responded if an interviewer acknowledged her position no doubt had research backing it, but was there research debunking it. And if so, is that research credible.

There is the wider issue that when pressing for more regulation, it would certainly be honest if the proponents included more than cherry picked data. If not that easily identifies them as activists – there’s a lot of it about these days. I get the feeling that the new Ministry of Less-Regulation might not be easily pushed around.

    I take my BP on an irregular basis. Luckily I have learnt that BP readings can fluctuate a lot .
    
    Depending on suck simple things as.
    Eating a meal before the test (can up the readings by 10 points)
    Crossing your legs during reading!
    Not resting in sitting position 5+ minutes before test.
    Needing to pee before the test.
    Cuff not fitted correctly.
    
    A single BP test on its own is almost useless.
    Its the tend that counts 🙂

      AFAIK most people do not have significantly fluctuating blood pressure.

      If you visit a doctor and have significantly elevated blood pressure it is most likely a problem. Sure they will get you to come back a couple of times to check it again. But it is more likely to be a problem rather than a waste of time.

        I was talking about things that can affect a single BP reading. Hence more than one reading is a proper way to detect high blood pressure.
        
        You have referenced an article on stabilizing blood pressure.??? and then support my contention by saying if you have a high reading, the doctor will want to do another reading.

        So if you go on TMe and search “blood pressure monitor” they start at about $30+freight. Buy one. Take your BP a few times. See what you think …
        
        I won’t prejudice your investigation by quoting my own experience. But going to the doc just to have your BP taken is a nonsense when you can just as easily – at buggerall cost – do it at home.
        
        “Normal” (gold standard) is 120/80. 140/85 is not anything to get very worried about. xxx/120 is definitely worry territory. The lower (diastolic) number is the one to worry most about.

  This is the problem – there are all sorts of activists who want their pet hobbyhorse activities banned, regulated or taxed. And worse still when they obtain Government funds to advocate their positions (left wing governments frequently fund activists to lobby government agencies). She has missed the bus – she should have lobbied for salt regulation three years ago while Jacinda and her mates were in power.

    As I heard it, she wasn’t pushing for regulation but for clearer information re the amount of salt in foods.
    e.g. if you buy a pie from a bakery there is no current information on how much salt is in it, unlike food in boxes and packets etc.

      The Stroke Foundation wants ‘government led reformulation of salt targets’. Carefully worded. But means mandatory.
      
      But my point was partly about salt but more about activists pressing for more government regulation, and presenting carefully selected data.

        AFAIK the problem with excess salt is in some processed foods. It is not you sprinkling salt on your fish and chips on a Friday night.
        
        Just Google “foods high in salt” and don’t eat lots of those.

        I asked my doc if there is any way I can raise my blood pressure (routinely about 90 or 95/55 or 60). He said we could medicate but suggested I really don’t want to take that approach. He suggested I try adding more salt to my diet…. Tried that for several years… no change.
        It won’t become a proper problem till I break a bone when I faint. Who can remember to get up more slowly???

    Salt is essential for our bodies to retain moisture – without salt we would dehydrate. So its the amount of salt – not all salt. I like my salt on chips, and other things to enhance the flavour.
    Maybe that’s why I’ve got high blood pressure.
    But no – its a blood enzyme that changes the way it works as we age in some people. I don’t know the science of it, but it happened to me when I was about 62. Twenty years later, I’m still fine – just pop a pill each morning. 🙂

    What country do you live in?! In the one I live in it’s illegal for waiters to ask you if you’d like another drink, and the blood alcohol limit for driving is the same as the State of Utah. Alcohol regulations are ridiculous in New Zealand.

  I remember similar alarmism about eggs around 30 years ago.
  There was a time when there were concerns raised about having two eggs a day. I used to get a guy at work telling me off about it. Terribly bad for you apparently.
  Then the ‘science’ was reviewed or whatever and we started seeing the ads “Two eggs a day is now OK”

AT chief executive Dean Kimpton yesterday disputed a weekend report that Brown was blindsided, saying he rang and talked to the mayor about it on April 29, and the plans had been “out there” since April 23 as part of AT’s parking strategy.

  AT is going to kill the inner city commercial area. Almost nobody uses public transport to visit the CBD commercial areas, like Commercial Bay or the Viaduct and shops or restaurants in that area. In my 18 years on the North Shore my wife and I have done this maybe 4 times for the novelty of it, and nothing more. If we go to that area we drive and park. But at parking rates like this we’ll just go somewhere else.
  Entertainment and food are already very expensive in this area, but adding another $30 – $40 to the bill for parking is over the top. Watch the CBD die. You heard it here first.

  Standard MO from Council organisations. When told to cut costs they pick on things ratepayers value and cut those or in this case jack up prices to piss ratepayers off. They know the Mayor and Councilors will cop the flak.
  The CCO’s are nothing such. All the Mayor and Council can do is appoint the Boards of Directors. After that they have no control unless they sack the Board and reappoint new Directors.

    Did anyone else think it odd that Dean Kimpton equates increasing parking fees to saving costs? Increased fees is clearly new revenue, whereas coming up with cost savings is cutting back on projects, reducing staff and consultants, reducing travel and entertainment expenses and finding more efficient ways to deliver more for less. Also odd this increased revenue would be turned on so quickly when they can’t seem to deliver anything else at pace. I think Brown needs to tell him to go back and start over and find genuine cost savings!

  This is the type of crime that should qualify one for 3S.
  
  From what I can see, this was a case of youngsters pursuing a man who may have offended them, after the situation was de-escalated they pursued and assaulted the man, used excessive force in the assault, when walking away was the logical and decent option. There are far too many of these types of offences taking place in our society.
  
  And as you say, often a cultural report is enough to give the perpetrator a free pass.
  
  Maybe it is time that we put pressure on the minister in charge and government to ensure that there are real teeth in 3S. The 3S law should at the very least place a responsibility on the judge to make a determination whether the criminal act constitutes a 3S offence, irrespective of the sentence.
  
  Victims, their family or any concerned citizen should have the right to ask for a review of the sentence if the judge waive 3S as part of the sentence.

Are our universities really this dire?

Of those who can, on a surface level, read and write to some satisfactory level, many lack the level of comprehension required to make proper sense to what they are reading. Their frame of reference is far too small. If you ask undergraduates for their honest opinion, many will say that they do not do the required readings (at most, they skim for 3 main points), they cannot concentrate to the degree required to read a journal article or a book chapter and that there are many words, phrases, and ideas within them that they don’t comprehend.

  As a general rule, technical manuals and reports are a lot harder to read than fiction. This is because they are full of jargon and generally long sentences with lots of clauses with rationed full stops. They are generally written by people that know their subject deeply and expect everyone else to as well. Yet people have to be able to understand these. Understanding this technical writing is essential but it is not there in much of the workforce.
  A number of accidents occur because people haven’t read the instructions, even when they are well written. Having icons on controls is a poor substitute for understanding. But the school system doesn’t test comprehension of reding and translation into actions.

  It’s concerning and interesting that we have students that neither know the foundational information they should, nor have the ability to think.
  The “modern” education system was built on the premise that the old “rote learning” system was useless and needed to be replaced. But the old system was based on the idea that unless you knew the core information by rote, you didn’t have a foundation to build on. This meant you wouldn’t get to a point where you could start to think for yourself.
  As with so many replacement (progressive) systems, they never achieve what they promise and often result in worse outcomes. In education we now have no rote knowledge (because rote is bad), and no ability to think because there’s no background to anchor your thoughts against.
  Historically most schooling was 12 years. Certainly mine was in South Africa and my NZ family tells me it was the same in NZ. Now we have 13 years of school, but students come out less qualified for life and tertiary education than we did with our 12 years in an “outdated” system.
  We need to get schools back to basics, starting from year 1, but I can’t see a lot of the current teachers being keen on going back to the old ways.

    We removed corporal punishment as a tool for schools to discipline. …. OK, not that it did most of us any real harm. (I can remember a friend telling me once that she cried every time I got strapped by a teacher. I recall responding, agh shame – I am so sorry)
    
    I am not saying that we bring corporal punishment back but children should be held to account and be punished for anti social behaviour. Not doing homework or performing tasks should be sanctioned. That is how the real world works.
    
    In the progressive project (critical teaching) we moved the power from the teacher to the pupil. No good can come of that!

  I wonder how much of this is real degradation in standards and how much is due to changing demographics?
  
  Most likely it is many factors.
  
  As I understand it, from talking to a primary school teacher a while ago, one of the bigger factors is that primary school teachers are extremely reluctant to fail the pupils and keep them back a year to repeat, because they want to be with their friends and, aww, hugz and hurtie feelings.
  
  As a result, children are being promoted to the next level when they are not ready. They never catch up and have no solid foundations to build on. Eventually they fall out of the pipe in high school with nothing.
  
  Failing a child and keeping them back a year is the best possible thing you can do for them. Better a few hurtie feelings than denying them education.

    I don’t know what point you are making. I don’t know much about the Hikurangi fault subduction zone. However there is an excellent and detailed seismic record of Alpine Fault earthquakes over the last 5,000 years. There will be a magnitude 8+ earthquake on that fault, most likely in the next 50 years.

Picking up on Benedict’s recent comments about the $400k salary attached to a tier 2 role in a smaller Ministry – that’s an outrageous amount of money, and cannot possibly offer that amount of value to the taxpayer.

I think all public sector CEO salaries should be immediately cut by $200k; tier 2 Managers by $100k & tier 3 Managers by $50k.

Let them squeal about how unfair it is, and how much talent will be lost to the private sector. I’ll bet that none of them leave, and in fact some may even welcome ‘sharing the load’. They’re all imposters, knowing that they’re not worth what they’re currently paid, and also knowing they’ll have no chance of matching even their reduced salary elsewhere.

    Our artillery is short range stuff, so pretty useless on a battle field.
    
    The main purpose of 105mm artillery is training. The ammo is cheaper and the range is less, but the laws of physics are the same.

        Artillery is still the king of the battlefield even in 2024 and for the forseeable future.
        80% of the casualties on both sides in the current Ukraine conflict are caused by artillery.
        
        A good 155mm howitzer (not the American crap) can fire accurately out to 70km away using base bleed shells and over 50km with conventional shells.
        
        With HE airburst shells they can pretty much wipe out everything soft in in 50m radius. With different ammo they can destroy tanks etc.
        
        There are three aspects to using artillery effectively:
        * Well trained operators, including observers.
        * Range: the guy with a 50km gun owns the guy with a 30km gun.
        * Volume of fire: having enough guns and, more importantly, heaps of ammo.

I see Poutaka has insisted DOC continue to use Manglish rather than English or Maori. I suggest that we or when anyone writes to DOC or fills in a form(do they have these) that you use Maori or use English but with lots of maori words inserted and interspersed. The effect will be they’ll need to outsource to maori translators or get some in-house adding to their overhead and taking away from their actual frontline work.

Hopefully these really are charter schools are going to be the real thing and not watered down like the new “3 strikes” law.

The article says that 15 are new schools and 35 will be re-badged state schools.

Re-badging existing state schools as charter schools sounds problematic unless they fire all the staff.

I hope I am wrong.

  Not quite right. The new numbers are based on the Palestinian Ministry of Health numbers, the previous numbers were from the Hamas Propaganda arm (the Government Media Office). So still not entirely reliable anyway.
  
  Also note that these are very much exaggerated figures even if technically correct.
  
  The women and children figures include fighters who are by definition not innocent (I believe children is under 19?).
  
  These figures obviously don’t differentiate between fighters and civilians either.
  
  These figures don’t differentiate between Israeli kills and Hamas/other terrorist kills. There is plenty of evidence of Hamas misfired rockets and even of them firing on their own people.

Record numbers of New Zealand citizens leaving and they will be our best and brightest, people with great career prospects and mobile capital. The disaster that New Zealand has become is squarely to blame. An ‘all eggs in one basket’ economy based on a property bubble which has left an indebted-to-the-eyeballs populace squealing for lower interest rates while the young simply see the sky-high prices and head for Australia, a totally woke corporate sector that fell into lock step behind Jacinda and started parroting Labour slogans, and now we have a woke corporate manager PM whose main focus is on watering down anything ACT and NZ First try to accomplish as regards reversing the hijacking of this country by the radical Left and radical Maori. The working population is simply being ripped off by rapacious councils and equally rapacious vested interests sucking on the teat provided by central government. And what is in store for us? More of the same. The only people sticking around will be those with family obligations here, or the hopeless.

  Most immigrants aren’t from countries with similar Western cultures. I wonder, does the NZ government actively target these countries or is it all just word of mouth? If skilled workers and professionals, and their capital, are needed, shouldn’t there be a campaign launched in similar countries offering incentives to move here?
  
  Or is it possible that NZ has become so unattractive in recent times that it’s better to hop off the plane in Australia?

Why would being left leaning or right leaning matter when dealing with matters of facts/opinion on non political matters.

From time to time I post alternative articles I find on such things as the Middle East war, the Ukrainian war, etc etc

Someone will then pop up and proudly say oh, that article is from a left leaning or right leaning outfit, in a supposed attempt to denigrate the information.

What difference does it make if the article if its authors think like a socialist or a capitalist when discussing the impact of a 1000lb bomb in Gaza or the number of Ukrainians attempting to take over a Russian held Nuclear plant?

You will be told that the Ukrainians were ‘committing a genocide in the Donbas’ prior to the full-scale Russian invasion in 2022, and this can be easily disproved simply by looking at the civilian casualty figures year by year from 2014 to 2021, and also the causes of death and on which side on the line of control people were dying on.     I know nothing of Law.
    What would be nice is if some here of Legal standing could follow Julian Batchelor through this to Section 6(6) of the Treaty of Waitangi Act.
    There is a loophole with the key word “UNLESS”
    So do we have a Government in New Zealand, or do we have a Waitangi Tribunal controller in Aotearoa?

The Christchurch Call’s work to eliminate terrorist and violent extremist content online will be coordinated by a new non-governmental organisation, Prime Minister Christopher Luxon and French President Emmanuel Macron have announced.

The Christchurch Call Foundation is the outcome of the November 2023 Call Leaders’ Summit, where leaders endorsed New Zealand and France building a resilient Secretariat ahead of the Call’s fifth anniversary in May 2024.

New Zealand taxpayer funding for the Call will end on June 30, as support functions transfer to the new Secretariat, funded by the new Foundation.

I cannot help but wonder if the real problem with comedy in New Zealand is that the comedians just aren’t funny

    I don’t often rise to your bait but who?
    
    I used to go to comedy clubs in the UK and some were outstanding (some of course were shit as well).
    
    The comedy I have seen in pubs and shows etc in NZ been utter shit with the exception of the Hudson and Halls show that was on at the Court Theatre a few years ago. I accept that it could be my choice of venue. If you, or anyone else, can suggest a good venue or comedian that is in, or visiting, Canterbury I would be grateful.
