NZ has become famous again in the international blog world for all the wrong reasons. Jerry Coyne has posted on the Nurse’s council’ stupidity as the latest from the asylum.

    Isn’t that exactly what we’re seeing right through our civil institutions right now – job ad after job ad requiring applicants to swear allegiance to this or that, demonstrate their fealty to this and that before they will even get a look in at any role. Job ads which are as much a political test as a statement of requirement of skills and experience.
    
    The Left in New Zealand are turning our public services in to a club where only the Left may apply – there will be no place in our civil service for anyone with differing views.
    
    This must be stopped.
    
    Our democracy is too important to allow our civic institutions to be so heavily dominated by one side of the political aisle – and a side who will so readily use their public positions to further their political objectives.

  A rahui is a prohibition based on religious or spiritual belief. The Police should not be involved with communicating them. Or at the very least they should have a release which says “Kaumatua have asked the community to refrain …” to make clear the request is not one being made by the Police who have no role in enforcing religious requests.
  
  In the case of those nurses who are actually in state employment the same should apply, that they, as with the Police, should not be involved religion.
  The same applies to the Maori Advisory Council to the Water Regulator, Tuamata Arowai – a Council which the National Coalition supports since it recently made two new appointments to it.
  As I have asked before: where is the Islamic Advisory Council to the Water Regulator, or the Jewish or Gloriavale one?
  
  The New Zealand Government, in all it departments and services, should be secular.

      I am sorry, Pdm, perhaps my English misleads, but “a Council which the National Coalition supports, since it recently made two new appointments to it” refers to the Maori Advisory Council, which is separate from the Water Regulator, Tuamata Arowai.
      
      Under Labour, the Maori Advisory Council had full governance, it appeared, over the Water Regulator, Tuamata Arowai, while most protests about “3 Waters” were against only co-governance at the lower proposed Entity level.
      
      Whether the role of the Maori Advisory Council has changed is unclear, but its continued existence is unexplained, when under the New Zealand First / National Coalition deal it should be at least examined to determine its exact function – be it Maori religious world view (te Ao o Maori) or environmental only, in which case it should be a group submitting evidence like any other agency, like perhaps the Destiny Church Committee for Pure Water.

        A creek or stream is ‘awa’.
        The town Te Awamutu means the end – ‘ mutu- of the stream – ‘awa’.
        But of course, a creek or a stream consists of water, so your point is valid.

    I have been in hospital 2 times in the last 2 years. Never once has a nurse spoken in Māori to me or given any sort of pray. I can say from experience, and that is not even a Kiora, I hate when someone greets me that way and usually frown at the whitey saying it, no frowns at any nurse.
    
    I will be getting my second hip surgery on Jan 10 I will listen carefully for unwanted pray or greetings, and I will report back

        There are Maori nurses in Tauranga. My wife was looked after by two Maori nurse a year or so ago – one of the nurses was a sister of the wife of a friend of mine whose wife is Maori.

      This is nothing new. The underlying legislation has been around for years.If there is an estranged relative that the will maker wants to cut out this should be discussed with the lawyer or legal executive who will be drafting the will. One method is to give the estranged relative an amount that a court is unlikely to interfere with and explain that other siblings have been active in the care of the will maker. Another option is for the will maker to form a trust with the estranged relative not included as a beneficiary. A recent case on this went all the way to the Supreme Court and the trust survived despite the reason for forming the trust was morally reprehensible.
      This is one reason to get a will professionally made rather than relying on a will kit or having a free cookie-cutter will prepared by the Public Trust or the like.

  As a daily reader of Jerry Coyne’s website almost since its inception, I would say it’s because he is a widely read and accomplished scientist with a strong commitment to sceptical empiricism, to translating specialist biological knowledge and advances in plain language, and to the values of the enlightenment.

    Much of the bullshit is hidden and entrenched, when it comes out publicly the government have publicly stated the sector has been reminded of their of their expectations, let’s not forget we have filthy unions telling staff to ignore Government demands, it is not always government’s fault, but as long as they keep reminding staff of obligations then surely there is bigger fish to fry

Trump had brought two of his most valued houseguests to the [transition] meeting: billionaire Tesla boss Elon Musk and billionaire Oracle co-founder Larry Ellison. Trump looked around the conference table and issued a joking-not-joking challenge.“I brought the two richest people in the world today,” Trump told his advisers, according to a person who was in the room. “What did you bring?”

Also a lot of other successful people named, including billionaires Larry Ellison, Peter Thiel, Marc Andreessen.

Maybe I am reading too much into this article but there is a sense that the NYT and maybe the Herald have an agenda running. As when it names some of the transition team involved in hiring interviews, along with their (lack of ) experience in these sectors. But no mention of the number of enterprises and jobs they have created. Maybe a few hundred thousand jobs for ‘the working man’.

  The reality is that the extremely wealthy have been heavily invested in the US political process since extreme wealth became possible in the mid nineteenth century. Joe Kennedy is a well known example, but there are plenty of others.

    I think it was more the luxurious building he wanted to do, worth something like $10 mill, it was to be a business venture. Many of the growing community in Wānaka are rich Aucklanders who have ruined the place, they have a hide, because they will have owned and sold very successful businesses, they are the people jumping up and down now in Wānaka.
    
    Think when they say well we will have to build up in Auckland, the very same types say not in my suburb, it’s the same mentality, the Wānaka I remember seen locals welcoming anyone and everyone, especially tourists

    I remember back to the wilderness years of NZ Labour 2008-2017 when they were languishing badly in the polls, yet at every opportunity to look at themselves in the mirror would reassure themselves that what they really needed to do to win back support was double-down on their insanity and go further left ignoring the reality that elections are won by courting swing voters.

Snuck into this article about vandalism of a piece of rock on top of Mt Maunganui (which name appears precisely nowhere in the article) is this little gem:

“During the repairs, Mauoa will be fully closed”.

Even by current H&S lunacy standards, this is a massive overreach. Who do these people think they are? Why does Council think this is acceptable to its ratepayers? And how long is the closure going on for?

  Given electrocution is death by electric shock and the kid survived, they have now changed the headline and article to “electric shock.”
  
  That at it was written as electrocution in the first place shows how useless journalism is nowadays though.

    The industry term is just ‘electric shock’ which may or may not be fatal.

      It is not necessarily that. Thiers of power lines aren’t known for their intelligence. We have had people try to take steel armoured paired signal cable. Also copper coated steel rod. There are articles in Google about people trying to steal HV power lines with predictable results. I was told one group in SA tried to steal a line in a hydrogen filled HV duct. That raised the IQ of the remaining population.

  I work with electricity but high tension lines scare me shitless, I wouldn’t go within a bulls roar of any switching yard and the concept of even going near a pylon, let alone climbing one is something I would avoid at all costs.
  You only have to get within a metre or so of a live conductor and the arc jumps the gap to you. Boom!!!
  
  They should teach this at schools, show a few graphic photos of people who have made that error, they aren’t pretty.

    Yep. Back in my school daze I knew of a child who climbed one of those 100kV-line towers and the arc got him. He got horribly burned. All children should be taught at school the dangers of electricity and especially taught to stay the hell away from any sort of power line or facility.

Some of Radio NZ’s broadcasters just do not present as being very smart. I’m thinking of Ingrid Hipkiss, who’s an airhead, while Mihi Forbes is a blunt pencil. Any time an interview does not go according to script, they seem completely lost. I would have thought the ability to think on one’s feet is a non negotiable for an interviewer.

Credit where credit is due; Kathryn Ryan & Jim Mora present really well, while midnight-5am regulars (yep, showing my age) Vicki McKay & Peter Ilwaine hit the right notes. Nathan Rawiri I have mixed feelings about; positive on the whole but leaning too far into a commercial radio presentation style for my taste.

  The value of this contract was about that. It is most unlikely that the cancellation penalty will come anywhere near this amount. Yard contract usually contain standard penalty clauses and this one will also have one.
  Trotter’s article is just a rant.
  
  Apart from everything else a government has no business to involve itself in shipping. The sad example of the last government’s coastal shipping initiative is the best proof of that.
  In 2022 the then government provided $30M funding to Move Logistics, Coastal Bulk Shipping, Swire Shipping and Aotearoa Shipping Alliance to help each company to provide at least one coastal cargo ship.
  Move Logistic was talking about setting up Ro-Ro service between New Plymouth and Nelson. Nothing ever came out of that.
  Coastal Bulk Shipping received a grant to cover half coast of their additional vessel Rangitata. This vessel spends most of her time at anchor due to the lack of cargoes.
  Swire Shipping put an additional container vessel Takutai Chief on the coast. This was withdrawn at the end of August due to the lack of cargoes.
  Aotearoa Shipping (West Coast Bulk Logistics) brought a motorized barge, Manahau, which initially was to be used to transport bulk cargoes between Westport and Nelson. After just one trip, this fine vessel ended up on the beach near Westport and is now moored in Nelson. Totally unsuitable for its intended purpose and now totally useless.
  The Chatham Islands service is its own separate saga and I’ll leave it for another day.

  Where is the CEO of KiwiRail on this ?
  The ship building process is that you tender out the specifications of new Builds to numerous ship yards.
  ie Size, Dimensions, tonnage, engines ( machinery ), Cargo capacities etc .
  This is what I would be very interested to see and How many shipyards did they submit the Tender too ?
  Shipping companies do not build infrastructure.
  The real question is How far Hyundai got in the building process? Generally 1/3 , 1/3 and final payment after completion of sea trials with a year of warranty claims thereafter.
  The Questions that need to be answered are,
  1.Why was the tender to build ferries that are too Big to safely enter the Ports/facilities.
  2. Why was it allowed to progress long after it was known that they were too Big.
  3.When was the decision made too make them Hybrid ( Battery) when they are banning EV from carriage world wide.
  4. Why did KiwiRail think it could become a infrastructure and Port Building company.?

    I suspect those in charge at Kiwirail didn’t know when nor how to admit they’d made a mistake with sizing the new ships and it spiralled from there into the land-based infrastructure. Which is odd and amateur. Which makes you question who selected the CEO and then who selected the board members. It didn’t help that it took a lot of escalation of budget before Labour said no more and parked it. But still, The CEO wouldn’t have sunk much cost at the outset surely.

  For a start the only figure we have heard is 300 million, and that is coming from unions, and Labour will know exactly what the break fee is, but what is Hyundai have been promised the build if they drop the break fee? Anything any of the media luckiest say including the ex Labour minister can be taken with a grain of salt. March 25 they will sign the deal they have done unless Peter’s can find a better alternative, now he is minister it may well give him extra power to source meetings with builders.

Is it time that Family Protection Act 1955 was reviewed? & the judiciary were not the appointed moral arbiters of other peoples personal decisions & required to give sincere effect to the testators wishes instead of their own opinions? Is the Family Court the appropriate judicial forum?

I don’t dispute & fully endorse the need for adequate protection & support of minors. However there are an increasing frequency of cases brought by supposedly grown & independent adults who nurse grievances. The dead cannot put their own side of the story.

The agent first noticed the suspect, later identified as Ryan Wesley Routh, and then noticed the barrel of Routh’s gun sticking through the fence line. The special agent, who may have been as close as five feet away from Routh, immediately responded by firing shots toward the suspect.   Despite being reasonably obvious to normal people that their issues are in no small part due to the destruction of their electricity grid and their foray into EVs, I saw at least two interviews with German economists claim that the demise of the car companies was due to them not going hard and fast enough into EVs.
  It seems that things aren’t quite bad enough yet to convince the slow people that climate change policies ( ot climate change) are going to be the ruin of us.

        Sort it with AI, x-ray spectroscopy and robots. Burn the un-recyclable rubbish at high enough temps (fueled by combustible waste) so that you don’t get nasty burn products. Use scrubbers on the smoke stacks. Keep and reuse the genuinely recyclable stuff (like metals and glass). Many Euro countries already do this (not sure about the AI sorting though).

  Yesterday afternoon I was watching a rubbish truck operator emptying council rubbish bins at a certain location near very popular beach down South. There were three bins: paper, glass and general rubbish. He emptied all of them into the same wheelie bin and took it back to his truck.

I have to admit that I still have a subscription to the NZ Herald – it was a ‘sweetheart’ deal that I signed up to during Covid for $20 a month and which for some reason has never been increased. It gives me Premium membership plus a delivered hard copy every Saturday. I was horrified this morning to open up my hard copy to find an almost full page ‘scare’ article on the likelihood of a Covid outbreak for Christmas, a photo of a queue for Covid jabs back in 2022 and worst of all a photo of Michael Baker. Images and articles of Ardern, Bloomfield, Baker and Wiles are not welcome in our house – wake up NZ Herald our country needs no unwelcome reminders of those dark ages and the politicians and public ‘servants’ that exploited them.

Does anyone think on the available evidence of a lack of project completion, cost overruns, budget blowouts , general wastage etc during the Ardern years that Labour could have negotiated the deal of the century for the ferry’s and their new infrastructure and would have been able to manage the implementation of them into operation within the projected $4B ?.

  Sadly/predictably the MSM does.
  
  They are so partisan it is entirely credible to believe that if the Party in power was reversed i.e. National originally signed up to iRex with the portside infrastructure cost blowouts and an incoming Labour Govt ripped up the deal terminating the iRex contract then made an announcement that they are investigating two new ferry replacements that are compatible with existing infrastructure and will save taxpayers around $2b (which could be invested elsewhere eg health and education), the MSM would be cheering the Labour Govt on and continue demonising National for signing up to iRex and for being prepared to waste up to $4b, especially during a cost of living crisis.
  
  Of the MSM – it’s true, isn’t it?
  
  And as for Labour today (Chippie and co) … nothing more than a bunch of hypocritical gaslighting “arsonists” who demonstrate zero acknowledgement or contrition for their failures. Despicable.

    Yes but be fair. Govt cancelled Irex a year ago, and it has taken them a whole year to get to the point where they will set up a company and kick the can down the road a bit more.
    
    If you make a big call, its normally good practice to have thought about what comes next. Otherwise its just amateur hour.
    
    Don’t get this Deity wrong, cancelling Irex was definitely the right idea, but its indefensible not to have worked out the next steps.

Have been watching the cricket. Why can the current commentators not shut the hell up? Why do they need to talk crap incessantly? Anyone watching can SEE what is going on.
To give an idea, this gem from Katy Martin blabbling about the pitch part the way through the first session “that’s when you can tell that some of the different colouring in terms of on the pitch.” And that is where she finished her comment. God alone knows what the hell she was talking about. Every single member of the public watching the TV and listening to the commentary, is now dumber than before they started watching and listening 🤬🤬.

Offical explanation was starlink satellites.

Strange satellites to change altitude, direction and set off anti collision warnings

“Is there any military activity out straight ahead of us?” the pilot asked.

“1596, no, we’re not seeing anything,” the controller replied. “I had another report at like 30,000 feet in the Eugene area, we’re not sure what it is.”

“Yeah, there’s lots moving out there,” the pilot said. “Looking straight west to Eugene. We’re seeing 3 or 4 targets… they’re at all altitudes, up and down, it’s pretty crazy.”

At 8:53 p.m. PST, the MEDEVAC pilot reported another sighting. “Just had another one show up, at my 1 o’clock, about 1,000 feet high, zipping towards us and then back out towards the ocean. Red in color. Moving at extreme speed, I just don’t know how to describe it.”

  They do start lower than that but certainly a LOT higher than 30,000′
  They just wouldnt allowed to be at that height and if they were Starlink would be closed down
