Chris Trotter on the Coalition‘s return to sanity re pay equity: “For the next eighteen months, Labour and its allies will beat their progressive drums with unflagging enthusiasm, and the Left will stamp and holler. Come election-day, however, they may be unpleasantly surprised by how many voters end up endorsing National’s and Act’s hard-nosed economic priorities.”

Labour and the unions will, of corse, rant. There’s no possibility of a rational debate. But by patiently explaining the facts and repeating them ad nauseum the [Mod – just because a journalist used a word doesn’t mean we lower to that level] will prevail. Care workers do a difficult and very necessary job. But they are not air traffic controllers, no matter how much Andrea Vance might think so.

  Mr Hosking just after the 6 am news today agrees with you, Cassandra. The pay equity law is now in. His view it is not a political risk for the government because ‘this country is on its knees’ and without fast and drastic ‘we are in very very serious fiscal trouble’. He refers to the last 6 years of abject fiscal vandalism. And ‘bugger the consequences’ of heaps of free stuff.
  
  A big chunk of the population, not to mention the unions, not happy about their binkies being taken away. But very happy about other people paying, and taxing the rich is only fair.

    I note the predictable moaning about the Regulatory Standards Bill omitting reference to the Treaty of W (ffs) as a further example of where we’re heading. Apparently racial discrimination and increasing wages by decree is the way to nirvana. The Coalition now has its battle plan for the next election. It’ll be in our hands – will voters really be so blind that they can’t see that you’ve got to EARN money. The cargo cult mentality still present, let’s hope it’s only a few.

  I can guarantee all the tea in China, and all the Gold in Fort Knox, that 99% of commentators, including Andrea Vance, know absolutely nothing about the pay equity stuff and are just parroting hyperbole, rhetoric and misinformation. I mean, I follow current affairs and politics very closely, and I have not had one person explain to me over the last week or so how it works, and what it does. All I have been getting is “it’s about women’s pay comparative to men”.
  
  I mean I don’t understand it, and I have three degrees including a Masters degree in law!!

    People who were around up to the early 1980’s can understand it. There were ‘general wage orders’, pay set for particular industries in ‘awards’ (the work product of the then ‘Arbitration Court’) and then ‘second tier’ bargaining. The Judges (in reality arbitrators with a more fancy name) would almost invariably grant some sort of increase thus leading to an upward wage spiral. After an ‘award’ was concluded the union concerned would start picking off individual employers for a ‘top up’ since a strike against one employer was more likely to succeed that a ‘general strike’. There were ‘parities’ all over the place which unions strived to maintain eg workers in ‘A’ were traditionally paid a bit more than ‘B’, so if ‘B’ got an increase then ‘A’ expect to get an increase too to maintain parity.
    To cut a long story short, the legislative framework Labour put in place effectively reverts to this old pre mid 1980’s situation. The unions were trumping up all sorts of alleged pay ‘disparities’ between various occupational groups and the arbitrators would partially buy into the arguments meaning an upward spiral of wages regardless of the economy. It would especially affect the public sector, either with direct public sector employees or other employees who are effectively paid via Government grants. The current state of the economy cannot tolerate this sort of thing, hence decisive action by Nicola and the Government to nip this in the bud. Much wailing and gnashing of teeth is fully to be expected.

    A few people have written explanations about it, and I sort of get it, but one point that I don’t is that apparently the previous legislation required the government to underwrite some wage guarantees, and it appeared that this extended to the private sector as well. If that is the case, then it sounds dangerous and ridiculous. I’m sure it was “intended” to be (for example) to maintain parity between a nurse in the public system and a nurse i the private system, but if they’re comparing hospital administrators to mechanical engineers, can the previous legislation be interpreted as requiring the government to underwrite pay claims for engineers in the private industry?

    Here is my understanding of their argument.
    There is no variation of pay for men and women within each industry. However, some industries that have a majority of women attract lower wages than some industries where the majority of are men.
    The union argument is that this disparity must be solely due to abuse of women. The solution, they argue, is to compare a female dominated industry eg librarian to a male dominated industry eg fishery officers and pay librarians the same as fishery officers.
    Further they demand “reparations” for all the years women were underpaid simply because they are women.

  I wonder whether most people believe the hyperbole from either side?
  
  While the country is on a rocky fiscal path, few people see it as being on its knees. They feel entitled to higher pay than they are getting, and to more services and hand outs but I don’t think they actually appreciate the circumstances.
  
  In some ways they have some solid ammo on their side. NZ’s debt to GDP is “only” 44% or so. Many will be saying that is very low – why not borrow and spend? USA has a 125% debt to GDP, UK is at 95%, Canada is 108% and Australia 58%. Why not us? We could spend $100bn and still be in the lower half of the other 5 eyes nations we tend to compare ourselves against.
  
  It is like living frugally when you’ve got a credit card you can borrow on. Many would see that we should be maxing that credit card out and living it up.
  
  Few will appreciate that NZ is on its knees until there is a repeat of the 1980s.
  
  For clarity, I am not proposing a spend up. I am just presenting what many will be thinking.

      “A small, shit economy” meaning it lacks size and diversity in both products/services and customers, and is geographically isolated.
      
      An outbreak of BSE, foot-and-mouth, or another major earthquake (which, by all accounts, is in the post) would completely bugger us.
      
      Besides all of that, the others are running debts they can hardly service anyway.
      So yeah, let’s keep spending, with no plausible cross-party plan to get out of debt anytime in the next century.

    cmm, from what Iv’e read the government wants to keep debt under 40% gdp because our small economy (compared to others you have listed) leaves us particularly vulnerable to natural disasters etc. Interest paid on debt of 176 billion was 8.8 billion and up 20 billion on the previous year. Perception by joe citizen might see our debt as low but that perception isn’t necessarily correct. Of course that $8.8B interest, is dead money that can’t be spent on hospitals etc without more borrowing.

      Sure, there are some valid reasons to keep debt to GDP low – including leaving some buffer for the natural disasters that can give us an awful kick in the balls.

    Well for a start we are at the arse end of the world and as any insurer will tell you , We are at the extremely high end for risk.
    Think Natural disasters and other Black swan events.
    Side note, Swans in NZ are Black not white.
    The trouble with NZ is that we have to follow others, Whether by indoctrination and other social issues that is the rage at the time.
    It is a time were we should sit back and follow our instincts, By this I mean keep quiet and not take sides in global affairs of which we have no influence.
    Make NZ more resilent in regards to supply chains and choose carefully our partners and allies. Keep away from divisive rhetoric and keep calm and carry on.

  She was a Liberal energy minister. Opposed to excessive wind and solar and favours nuclear. But a reasoned moderate in most respects. She has an uphill battle ahead but she does seem a sensible choice. Dutton was just too aggressive – you’d have thought that’d suit Aussies just fine but apparently not.

So IRD is taking a tougher line on overseas resident Kiwis who are not paying off their student loans, including arresting delinquents at the border.

Robyn Walker, a tax partner at Deloitte, said it was another example of where Inland Revenue had been dormant for a while and was now making up for lost time.
“In the past there has seemingly been very little effort applied to contacting overseas-based student loan defaulters, and … many of them … probably were blissfully unaware of mounting repayment liabilities, penalties and interest if Inland Revenue had difficulty contacting them.
Interestingly the article makes no attempt as to why little effort was applied to chasing student loans in the ‘past’ (more exactly since 2017). Perhaps Jacinda’s ‘be kind’ messages and informal hints from Robbo somehow got through to IRD chiefs. IRD would no doubt like to think that it is impervious to this sort of thing, human frailty being what it is etc. In fairness to IRD, resources needed to be switched at short notice to attending to Covid related matters. But then resuming student loan enforcement has not really resumed until about now which would indicate some Departmental inertia. With the current state of the economy perhaps there would be less public sympathy towards such defaulting students than in the period prior to 2017, especially as Robbo (the students’ champion) is no longer in the picture.

  I guess if the defaulter has some NZ assets they can be used to clean up the debt. Is there any need for the defaulter to be here in that case ?
  
  Not sure about arrests at the border though – we abolished debtors’ prison a couple of hundred years ago, so AFAIK jail is not an option. It’s all here .. one or two a year.

    Two points:
    1. IRD has wide powers to raid bank accounts etc where taxes etc are in default. However to deal with property IRD would need to bankrupt the defaulter first and there are logistical difficultes with this such as proving service of documents to the satisfaction of the Court. Far easier to wait until the defaulter returns to NZ. As far as I know IRD cannot raid a family trust to recover a beneficiary’s debt.
    2. When an arrest is made the debtor would be detained for just long enough to enable things to be immediately sorted, eg pay something immediately and agree to a payment plan). Debtors prisons were for people who could not pay off a debt (but did encourage a debtor to seek help from family or friends). So there is no question of student loan defaulters being chucked in jail just because they have no money to meet the payment. Once they return to NZ, the authorities can prevent their departure until things are settled. This is more effective than imprisonment with the added advantage that the taxpayer does not need to pay for the defaulter’s upkeep in prison.
    There are also defaulters who will not return to NZ to avoid being trapped in NZ and in such cases it is relatives who kick up a big political song and dance.

      Agree. Grabbing people at the border and preventing them leaving is the easiest option.
      
      Those that chose to hide outside the country it is significantly harder. Perhaps we should have guarantor for student loans. That way the guarantor can be held accountable instead. I imagine mums and dads would get their kids into line pretty quickly if they were left holding the can.

      The government could persuade an isolated person to provide a credit card imprint together with appropriate authorisation. But perhaps Jacinda’s kindness would have prevented this. Perhaps the Government could have extracted credit card details and authorisation while the person was overseas as a condition of allocating an isolation bed.       When my fellow lottery winners and I (and isn’t ‘lottery winners’ such a counterintuitive phrase in that context) finally arrived at Auckland airport, everybody in the airport and on the bus to the hotel and at the hotel and all the way to a room kept us at much more than arms-distance.
      
      You didn’t get to speak with anybody even though you were all masked to eternity, they barked orders at you (reducing many children and older adults and a few standard adults to tears) – the police much more aggressively than the army, and the “immigration staff” much more aggressively than the police or the army – and woe unto you if you tried to wait for your luggage or wanted to find out if you could get a room next to someone you had spoken to on the plane or even if you could make sure that as a family you’d be in a room big enough to survive two weeks with three children under four years old (sadly they didn’t, the mother of one such group slashed her wrists about 10 days in – she was “along the corridor” on the same floor as I and others, and we quickly figured out you could talk to each other (although the guestroom-to-guestroom telephone system was disabled) by opening the door and talking at a moderate volume – the guardians were too scared to leave the elevator lobby and come down the corridor for anything but a major emergency, but I digress). And if you had your phone out and wanted to record audio or video; the threats were Cahill-grade.
      
      I suspect (but of course don’t know for sure) that the main reason they didn’t get credit card imprints was because of the absolute fear and horror that they might come into transmissible contact with the Reluctantly Repatriated Leprous Unclean, and even St. Bloomfield (PBUH) would not be able to save them…

      TN – during the lockdowns a married niece living and working in Sydney came home to see her very ill father. She got some sort of compassionate entry visa but still spent 10 days in confinement near Auckland Airport.
      
      From her time of arrival until about 6 months after she returned home she tried to get an invoice so that she could pay her `Lock Up’ fees.
      
      From what she told us next time she was home it was a lengthy and frustrating process.

Interview on the wireless this morning where Covid was blamed for 5 year olds turning up at school with lower levels of abilities than previously.       The swedes didnt need lockups and they were Ok.

      (1) we were not guests at a hotel we were prisoners in a jail. Ever been to a jail that bills at all?
      
      (2) a lot of us who’d been locked out of coming back for many months, were flat broke. I was locked out and as a result overstayed in a country I only had a 30-day visa for and once I was an overstayer I could not legally get a motel room etc. and so I bought a clapped out Eastern European crapmobile and lived out of it for 70+ days until I could get a dispensation. I could not get access to funds from NZ either (no local bank would help and ATMs all shut down because, WuPox scare!). So how was I gonna pay up front before arrival? And we could not get cash on arrival either, airport ATMs sealed with yellow hazmat-plastic ribbons like a freakin’ biocrime scene.

      Is the arrival of Maori by Waka the only real difference between our various cultures?
      Every culture had it’s oral histories, fables and myths, beliefs of a divine power (whatever the name).
      In many cultures these beliefs have been replaced as rules of behaviour by greater knowledge.
      One of the great advantages gained by many cultures was the written language, which allowed knowledge to be stored for future use.
      Do we have to keep reminding ourselves of the gains that resulted?

  In which Health NZ has effectively misled the Minister about the status of the document. If the Minister believes from context etc that he is receiving a confidential briefing, then the Department has no business releasing it into the Public Domain. Also from the Department’s point of view, it is under no obligation to release a frank communication with its Minister under the OIA. If the Department wished to release the document directly, it should have consulted with the Minister’s staff. In this instance, the Department has embarrassed the Minister which is quite unacceptable. The Minister will hopefully deliver a kick in the pants.

    What about the public’s right to know what is going on?
    Not only is the public health system losing doctors to better paid positions offshore, but it seems also to the private hospitals who are picking up more work from the public system. They are therefore able to offer higher salaries.
    The problem is they don’t do the more complex procedures and the public wait times are ever longer for those operations as they lose doctors to private hospitals
    It seems Minister Brown doesn’t want us to know while he tries to square the circle

      I certainly think the public has a right to know, but I think you are wrong in some other aspects.

      I don’t think it actually works like that. If you get an operation done privately then it isn’t by a surgeon hired by a private hospital. Instead you are contracting directly with the surgeon’s private company and using the hospital only for its resources (operating theatre, beds etc).
      
      Of course people who are running a company and are self employed charge more than an employee. They are taking on more risks, have to pay higher costs etc.
      
      I am a self employed consultant in the electronics and software sector. I earn at least 50% more than I would as an employee, but then I have to pay for a bunch of things myself and I don’t get paid leave etc.

        Salary x 2 or 3 is common to assess actual costs so they include – various leave, management, admin, accommodation, equipment, vehicles, training and development etc. So all of those need to be taken into account to compare salary apples with apples.
        
        Apart from a likely disconnect when comparing public v private sector incomes, there will also be a disconnect in costs of public sector organisations depending on whether they are efficient or profligate with taxpayer funding.

  About 100 people a day die in NZ, almost all adults, highly skewed towards elderly. Pretty much all adults in NZ got covid shot, so on simple stats you would expect about 100 to die on day of shot. In reality of course large fraction of people die while under intensive medical care when very sick and would not get the shot under such circumstances.
  
  In short; this is a total nothingburger, unless you can show a spike in certain types of death (ie cardiovascular) amongst those who died on day of shot, but well above and beyond normal daily risk of cardiovascular death.
  
  Note that there were about 2000 excess deaths during the vaccination program of 2021 over and above those seen in 2020 – with both years basically completely absent normal respiratory viruses that looks like almost certainly a smoking gun for vax-caused deaths, NZ was a perfect experiment for large scale statistical study of covid vax deaths due to lack of confounding factors and the fact we could provide our own control -group in 2020 vs 2021 vax program..

  I slightly disagree. Yes, education is important but I think the cause and effect linkage is wrong. It is far too easy to say that education is what caused all these outcomes.
  
  If people change their attitudes and organise themselves, then they will fix a bunch of loser behaviour in their lives. Education then is a symptom of that – not a cause.
  
  Or, phrased differently, you need to get many ducks in a row to successfully attend school and get an education. Actually getting an education is often just a proxy for achieving that.
  
  If we get the cause and effect linkage wrong then we end up with a type of cargo cult. Just go to school – no matter what you do – and everything will change.
  
  The wrong sort of education also does not unlock prosperity. If we just get fixated on getting people into school then we are prone to making a bunch of “fun education” followed by basket-weaving degrees.

  That is why parents who can afford it and some who cannot really afford it send their children to private schools and meet virtually all the costs and pay GST as well. They are disenchanted with much of the public offering.
  Years ago a Christchurch taxi driver made a big financial sacrifice and sent his boy to Christs College because he perceived it would be beneficial in the long term. The boy was probably far more motivated than some of his classmates.

    The stories he would tell of the sacrifices many parents made for their girl’s education was quite humbling…..

Every time I hear the guy called Chris Hipkins and his distrustful baked in Ideology and lies about the latest common sense decision by the Coalition Government to balance the books on Pay Equity .
Coming from a person who could not cut the mustard on every Ministerial position he was selected for in the last term of his Labour Government 2020 -2023. His claim to fame if that was a good idea was to install 16,000 extra Public Servants
Seems he is completely in bed with the Public Servant Unions where women allegedly earn the same as men . Circa $50 per hour?
Good luck to them except the way Hipkins and his inference is the type of earnings $50 per hour needs enhancing .Maybe alright in boom times .
Not at the moment to sacrifice the well being and daily living of every man woman and child in New Zealand .
That is the standard that Hipkins lies can cause the rest of the Nation of New Zealand when he deliberately lies as he flies a flag for his beloved Public Service Unions and their Associates .

  A tax on private jets… Greens say that will raise money for all sorts of things. Not very likely.
  
  There are somewhere around 1000 private jet flights in NZ every year. Charging them $5000 each is going to bring in $5M. That’s not going to pay for much.
  
  Add more income tax to the picture and even more people would leave the country.

  By laying it on too thick the Greens would be forcing Labour into taking a stand for or against these policies eg having to rule out a wealth and similar taxes.

    I was in Europe recently and the fast trains were amazing. One thing I noticed though, the vast majority of the train lines were on flat land, very few had to go over or through mountains until we got to Switzerland. It might surprise the Greens but apart from the Hamilton and Canterbury plains NZ is not flat – unsure about Aotearoa though.

        Colville: No…the Napier to Wairoa section is still there – not sure if it’s used much or at all – but the Wairoa to Gisborne section is blown out in a number of places, and would cost massive amounts to repair.
        
        If the Greens were in charge they might waste the money on fixing a line which will be very little used, but I don’t think even Labour would be that stupid.

      Maggy: No indeed…did you know the Napier-Gisborne line didn’t open until 1942? And the proposed line from Gisborne to Tauranga – or to be more accurate to Taneatua – got as far as a bit past Te Karaka before they realised the massive cost involved – not to mention the huge engineering challenge of the Waioeka Gorge – and pulled up all the tracks they had laid to that point in time.
      
      The remains of that proposed line can still be seen in Makaraka…or they were still there when I was last in the home town. And if you go down that street – can’t remember it’s name, but parallel to Chalmers road – you cross TWO lines; the first one is the track that now ends in Makaraka, the other is the old Gisborne-Wairoa line.

    We may have been on the same trains, like Paul Theroux in “The Great Railway Bazaar” I went all the way ending up in Calcutta. The Indian railways were an unforgettable experience, untouchables left to die on the platforms with commuters stepping over them. A dose of Delhi belly; in one end straight out the other.   Glad to see that, for once, the Herald has actually pointed out a few inconvenient issues with this.
  
  Companies tax would be raised from 28% to 33%, making it one of the highest in the developed world, higher than Australia, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
  
  Translation: Dear companies, we hate you and think you’re evil. Sod off to Australia.
  
  Income tax would be raised for some, with the 39% threshold kicking in at income over $120,000 and a 45% rate applied to income over $180,000.
  
  However, a tax-free threshold would be introduced at $10,000, increasing the after-tax incomes of people earning less than $115,000 — the vast bulk of people, although setting the tax rate that low would begin to capture some professions the Greens are trying to target.
  
  Thanks to a 2023 pay equity settlement, senior nurses had their pay lifted to between $105,704 and $153,060, meaning many would pay higher rates of income tax under this plan.

another horror item from Dept of Stats this morning –
Migrants aged 18 to 30 years made up 27,200 (39%) of the 70,000 migrant departures of New Zealand citizens in the March 2025 year.
Migrants aged 18 to 44 years made up 80,200 (64%) of the 124,400 migrant arrivals of non-New Zealand citizens in the March 2025 year.
For migrant departures in the March 2025 year, citizens of New Zealand were the largest group, with 70,000 (± 800) departures. The next-largest groups were citizens of China (7600) the United Kingdom (4600) and Australia (4100).

For migrant arrivals, citizens of New Zealand were the largest group, with 25,200 arrivals. The next-largest groups were citizens of India (23,600), China (19,000) and the Philippines (12,300).

Today I have learned:
1. Children starting school now are less prepared than previously and the Principals Federation says it is “because of Covid”. Parents weren’t mentioned. Given that many of them were at home during Covid, shouldn’t these children be better prepared?

2. Radio NZ – Some pupils are extremely anxious, dismayed, demotivated and dejected when they fail the new numeracy and literacy NCEA exams, “especially if they have been able to achieve at higher levels of NCEA in statistics and calculus,” but fail numeracy. Yet, “essentially it’s basic literacy that is being assessed” says one principal.
The Ministry agrees the tests are basic: “at the level of what’s expected at the end of intermediate”.
How can students get through 3 years of high school and get all the other credits needed for NCEA level 1 if they don’t have intermediate level literacy and numeracy?

3. Another from Radio NZ – “Downgrading a law compelling early childhood centres to acknowledge children’s culture is a backward step which may see tamariki Māori left behind…” The current requirement only seems to require acknowledgement of Maori culture. But if secure cultural identity is important for cultural development, shouldn’t that also apply to children of every other culture?

  I’ll wager that many changes vs historic numbers are due to changing demographics. Therefore comparing 1990s kids to 2020s kids is not an apples to apples comparison.
  
  For example, in 1999 less than 20% of children in school were Maori and now it is more than 25%. Pasifika children have almost double in the same period.
  
  And of course it isn’t just a race issue, but racial markers are an indicator of socio-economic status and how much families value education.

  It seems to me you’d really have to be cherry-picking to find children who can pass statistics and calculus and not pass basic numeracy.
  
  The numeracy tests are pretty basic. If you can’t pass this you’re going to really struggle with differentiation or statistics.

    I believe the numeracy tests were much harder then the previous NCEA tests. Which is good.
    
    Also it may be they were a different format to the, stupid, normal NCEA tests.
    
    NCEA is a blight on the education systems engineered from the outstep to ensure almost everyone passes. The plan worked and the outcome is poorly educated kids. My high school son tells me that on some tests its almost impossible to only get achieved (read 50-80% / D, C or B) you either get Merit (read 80-90% / B+, A-) or Excellence (90% + A, A+) or you fail. Thats because the points are so easy to get, if you answer them you will get at least merit, the only way to fail is to not answer.

  Sparrow: In short, YES….and the main reason is the extremely leisurely hours our judges keep. No night court or court on Saturday for our beaks.
  
  Thus the solution is pretty simple: All newly appointed judges must be prepared to work 9-5 six days a week, and do a week of night court once a month. Given that DCJ’s get north of $350,000 a year – $381,900 to be exact – that’s still a pretty good gig.

    Recently there was a public submission period on the qualification to elect a jury trial. That included a chart on the 7 (I think, maybe 8) steps the precede the actual trial.
    
    When we hear that a trial is “set down for next August” does that presume the preceding 6 or 7 steps have been completed, or is that date for the first pre trial hearing?

    November 11 1970- Thomas arrested and charged with murder.
    March 1971 – A jury finds Thomas guilty on both counts of murder.
    June 18 – Appeal by Thomas dismissed.
    Five months was time enough for the prosecution, but clearly not for defence as elaborated by the book
    On the other hand Romanian dictator, Nicolae Ceaușescu, and his wife Elena were tried, found guilty and executed on Christmas Day, December 25, 1989

After the conclusion of a council meeting the chairman of the local bowling club sidles up to the Mayor.

I think we need a representative from the bowling club on the Council, he says.

OK, great, says the Mayor. Just field a candidate at the next local election. Make your case during the campaign and if the voters agree, you’ll get a seat on the Council.

Yeah, that’s not going to work. Not many people around here belong to the bowling club or are interested in the issues we care about.

Maybe just appoint someone to the Council instead. We were thinking Dave. He’s a great guy and very well liked down at the club. He does the meat raffle on Thursday nights.

Um, I’m afraid that’s not how it works, the Mayor replied.

We think it’s very important that the bowling club has a voice on the council and gets to participate in the decision making process to advocate for issues that are important to our members, the bowling club chairman continued.

The Mayor wearily shakes his head and walks away.

Before he reaches the door, the Chairwoman of the local knitting circle approaches him.

Um, do you have a moment to chat? She asks.

If this scenario is ridiculous, why aren’t similar scenarios equally ridiculous?

Is Britain’s Labour’s PM, Keir Starmer, close to handing Gibraltar over to Spain?

Preliminary steps are coming, if a report in the Telegraph is correct.

It says Gibraltar is about to join the EU’s Schengen passport-free zone.

The newspaper says that, depending on the final deal, British citizens travelling to Gibraltar might have to show their passports to Spanish or EU border guards at the airport.

Gibraltar’s “First Minister,” Fabian Picardo, is reported as saying the passport deal’s close to being struck.

This comes a day after Spain’s Foreign Minister, Jose Albares, told Starmer that his “reset” with the EU must include a deal on Gibraltar.

Starmer has already infuriated the United States by signing away to Mauritius sovereignty of the Chagos Islands, a key Western strategic base.

Privileges Committee recommends suspension for Te Pāti Māori MPs who performed House haka

Parliament’s Privileges Committee has recommended suspending three Te Pāti Māori MPs after last year’s controversial haka.

The powerful committee said the trio had acted “in a manner that could have the effect of intimidating a member of the House in the discharge of their duty”.

The committee recommended 21-day suspensions for co-leaders Debbie Ngarewa-Packer and Rawiri Waititi. The committee said Ngarewa-Packer and Rawiri Waititi should be “severely censured”.

It also recommended a seven-day suspension for MP Hana-Rāwhiti Maipi-Clarke.

The recommendation will be put to the House tomorrow and likely passed.

Unsurprisingly, the Maori Party is not thrilled about this. 😂
