Ian Fraser offers to resign

October 30th, 2005 at 11:22 am by David Farrar

The CEO of TVNZ, Ian Fraser, has offered his resignation to the TVNZ Board. So far they have declined, but it looks like it will happen this week.

If Fraser goes, Ralston will not be too far behind.

A bit of a pity because both men have done some very good things in journalism. Whether they were quite right for their current roles is another issue though.

They do not break stories plus there is a suspician they are just a Government poodle. So why would you watch news from them. Basically 50% of the country are centre-right (at least) and if you are going to represent a leftist agenda why would righties bother. The same could be said for National radio that claims to represent New Zealand but its programming is unremittingly chardonnay socialist.

If they went in with the objective of getting rid of people that were earning too much once public opinion was riled up against it, they certainly deserve a bonus.

    However…

It has been said that they feared the loss of viewers to TV3 over time and this had to be prevented by making it “younger”. They did that by destroying the 2 or 3 highest rating programs in this country.

I would have asked for their resignations. Easy enough to kill the golden goose – but it’s exposed a rather embarassing vacuum instead of the “new wave” of TVNZ news/current affairs/magazine shows.

If they can do me just one favour before they go… cancel Coronation Street. Using the same justification: had its run, not apealing to younger viewers, bigger than the channel itself – must be replaced.

I have been amazed Fraser and Rallston were not asked to leave. A lot of things they have been meddling in have gone South as far as I can ascertain.

    - Breakfast (although Hosking/Hawksby had to be separated)
    - Good morning
    - 6 o’clock news
    - Holmes and its variants
    - The weather

I have specifically disliked TVNZ’s “need” to spice up the news by sensationalising it.

I don’t know if Fraser’s “vision” was his own or his masters’, but in this viewer’s opinion it’s been uninspired and ultimately pointless.

@Tim: One News still does break news stories, however now it seems to be more balanced than in the past. It looks like TV3 picked up faster than they thought, or they thought that they could do anything to the product and people would still be happy.

However, apparently everything that has happened was in Bill Ralstons “vision” when he signed up for the job and he has no need to stick around anyway. He has specifically said that he will stay for the transition over to “New One News”, that he has apparently been slowly making over the years.

TV3 still annoys me though, so I’m not switching over just yet.

@Belt, what is it that Ralston/Fraser have done to the weather. About the only thing that has changed since 1998 (?) is the new pretty animated icons they have. w00t.

    Horses for courses.

re: weather – If you genuinely think that’s all that has changed, you have a relatively low-tech weather need and/or you simply haven’t been paying attention :)

Just as a-for-instance: The current reader has to be the worst choice for presenting the weather for a long time -on either channel-. I actually can not bear to watch him and switch away.

yes, Jim Hickey was a much better weatherman.
That Brendan guy is useless, always fluffing up his lines.
I still stick with One though.
But 3 does have better weather and Russell always wears some lovely shirts.

    Cheers

    Darren
