Wellington Elections

January 29th, 2007 at 10:00 am by David Farrar

An interesting editorial from the Dominion Post today.

Not too many will be surprised that the paper endorses Kerry Prendergast for a third term as Wellington’s Mayor. But somewhat radically they call for Lower Hutt Mayor David Ogden to be sacked, saying “He is not suited to the mayoral chains”.

Bizarrely they refer to rumours (which are news to me, and I suspect to Mark) that Mark Blumsky wants to return to local government, and suggest he stands for the Lower Hutt Mayoralty!

Could never work out why you said Georgina Beyer would be no good as Wellington Mayor ( she had previously been an effective Mayor of a small town) since she made no impact as an MP.
While your ex mayor (who you were campaign manager for) seems to have disppeared from the radar since becoming an MP.
Sounds like Beyer would make a great Mayor based on the Blumsky experience

Wasn’t Blumsky the clown who assaulted himself and suffered amnesia and confusion last year? Have his neurologists given him clearance for this Mayoral undertaking? If so,why?

I couldn’t see any Wellingtonian being elected Mayor of Lower Hutt. Nor could I imagine a Labour stronghold like the Hutt electing any National Supporter…Beyer would stand a much better chance .

Georgina has been in Parliament for around ten times as long as Mark. Despite that Mark has probably already asked more questions and done more releases.

Of course one’s profile is less as a backbench first year opposition MP, than say as Mayor.

Current Hutt Mayor David Ogden is a long-time National supporter, and a National Party candidate.

And a bloody good mayor is Ogden, too.

He pisses off socialists by refusing to play the game of borrow, spend and leave the mess to your sucessor; who borrows, spends and leaves a bigger mess …

Unforetunately, big spenders have a habit of being elected.

Ogden is properly described. As someone who had to work with (for) him when he was a councillor, I can state categorically that he is about as adept at matters political as pigs are at flying. Sack the whole Hutt council, I say!

Ogden has never stood for National or declared what political party he supports.

Ogden has never stood for National. He stood for Future New Zealand in 1996, describing himself as “cannon fodder for God”. Aside from this brief foray into national politics, he has never publicly stated what party he supports.

David Ogden’s record as Mayor of the Hutt is tops. Rates are being held or reducing and debt is down and heading lower. Key infrastructure – flooding protection, road maintenance – is being brought up to scratch. The council is fiscally responsible and watches how it spends ratepayer money. Any reluctance to work with Wellington City stems from a reluctance to through ratepayer money at Kerry’s pet projects. The DomPost has clearly been got at by Kerry’s stooges. Their reporters are too bloody lazy to come out to the Hutt to find out the truth!
