Great game

Now that was a great game of cricket. Started to look good at 45 overs and I was thinking they’ll try and finish the job in the second to last over, and they did, giving NZ our 29th ODI victory over Australia. Still they have 75 wins over us.
When Australia batted to 336 runs, who would have thought we would win, but NZ got 337/5 with eight balls in hand. Both teams broke the record for runs scored in an ODI at Eden Park.
Also a record for NZ vs Australia in any ODI.

Adolf was at The Park. Fabulous weather and pleasant company. The group (10 individuals)next to us consumed over 100 cans of Heiniken.
Is that another record?

I actually think New Zealand must be favourites to win the world cup, although England are un recognisable from the team they were a month ago and now look like they can beat anyone too. Anyway, now I’ve said all that no doubt Pakistan will win the world cup.

DPF – at least you weren’t msning me this time telling me how it was “so obvious” that we were going to lose. I’m not sure i’ve entirely forgiven you for that.
Nich – NZ must be favourites to win the world cup? Are you serious?

That might be a little over the top to say that new zealand is favourites to win the world cup
Was at the game and can say there was genuine jubilation at the end. And also for a sunday afternoon there was quite a lot of drinking going on

Um 10 beers each over a game of cricket is not particular record inducing. Twenty is regarded as acceptable for a day’s cricket.
At 45 overs it was ours to lose. I had hope at over 0, positive thoughts at 25 and thought it was odds on at 35.

First NZ cricket team in years that doesn’t look like it’s mildly depressed.
Maybe it’s playing the Aussies lots of times, maybe they caught some aggression virus.

Only 10 beers each?
Pussies!
10 per innings seems much more like par for the course!

While it was an unrecognisable Aussie team, I think this was a fantastic result. To let Aussie get 336 and overhaul them says it all really, but to do so in the deciding match of a series was very satisfying. Mind you, I still think Friday’s 10-wicket win was a better effort.

All is forgiven Craig,I can overlook all your past indiscretions for that lovely cameo at the end to stuff the Ockers!

Kiwigirl – I was however correct. I can’t help being an accurate predictor of cricket outcomes

It would be easy to underestimate how significant the last game was, and how big an impact it will have on Australia.
The Aussies came here on the back of losing to the POMs 2 zip. Winning this series was important to them, but they were overconfident in resting key players.
There will be quite a bit of shock that the backlash in the last game was jsut not good enough. These players are used to managing to win however badly they bat or bowl.
I think that Australia are finding that they are not as good as they thought they were. If you look back at the tri series just gone, whilst on paper they made the finals comfortably, the truth is that they nearly lost at least two of their pool games (one against England, the other against NZ).
Had they won the tri series and the Chappel Hadley series, you would say that the near games were the aberration.
Having lost 4 in a row and 5 out of 6, possibly the squeaked wins were the aberration.
If NZ manage to win the next game it will mean that there will be an Aussie team in the world cup that is there without the self assurance that comes from knowing you can always pick your game up for the big match.

I agree that the Aussies were too cocky in resting their key players, because they felt they could easily beat the blackcaps without them – obviously not the case.
The Blackcaps however could be heading towards a typical All Black scenario, and peaking too early before the World Cup.
Nevertheless I was gutted by the blackcaps win, especially when I was in my green and yellow outfit. At least I got to see McGrath play in one of his last matches.

2 points to consider here!
That is Australia’s best bowling line up! No one who they have “rested” would have bowled a ball in either of these 2 matches. These are the bowlwers they are taking to the World cup!
I’m sick of hearing how these are hollow victories because Oz are missing key players.
NZ has spent most of the last 20 years playing games missing key players, Haddle, Crowe, Cairns, Vettori, Bond and now of course Oram.
You think the aussies see it as a hollow victory when they beat a depleated NZ team?
When will people rejoice as fans and celebrate a victory?
Why does every positive result need to be tempered with a “yeah but”?
February 19th, 2007 at 1:30 pm
Yes Razork, you’re right. Just a matter of weeks before the crucial event, the Ockers have suffered a severe morale reversal and have given NZ a huge morale boost. It’s unlikely that was part of the plan for success.
For me, Tait was the biggest disappointment. I went along expecting to see another Lee, only a bit faster. With the exception od Styris, our batsmen (batters play baseball or surround hot fish) seemed to handle him with ease.
February 19th, 2007 at 2:16 pm
Razork—I agree.
Well done NZ!
You thrashed Australia. Don’t wait for them to heal. Do it again.
[..And this from someone who has written off the homeside in posts as 'serial losers' and the 'Black Craps']
Ah well, hats are meant to be eaten occasionally, it’s good for the mind I hear.

Some observations, first the Aussies were far too forgiving in the field in there was no sense of focussed urgency. Secondly Ponting does a vastly superior job at marshaling his field.
Plus that Bond was on fire helped our case for sure, backed up with some aggressive NZ batting.
February 19th, 2007 at 4:22 pm
On paper the Friday win was the bigger achievement, though, good as the bowling was (and it was top class, especially Bond’s c&b), the thing that made the win top notch was knocking off the runs without losing a wicket. Any side can collapse on a bad surface, but if the other side copes with the same surface it takes away all excuses.
My opinion is that the win last night was even better, and more significant. Australia did their utmost- they batted well and made use of a good pitch to set a daunting total. Many sides fold completely when faced with a challenge like that. NZ did not. They reached the total, and did it in style, with 8 balls to spare. That was really rubbing salt into the wound, especially with McGrath getting a pasting in the final over.
Flemming has been a very good captain for NZ, and Vettory has done well as a stand in. Australia must be a bit concerned about a backup for Ponting, because Hussey has failed to impress as a captain.
Ponting is undoubtably a better captain than Hussey, but he has been a good captain of a great side. When the team has struggled he has been exposed as not being a great captain.
As far as it being a depleted Aussie side? Razork spelled it out. Australia have had an almost charmed run for years, with a fraction the number of injuries compared to sides like NZ and England. There were no players in this series (that I am aware of) that were making their debut, and Australia has boasted for years that they could field the worlds best 3 teams from their depth of talent.
I, for one, am hoping that the Black Caps will be able to turn their new found grit & determination into a 3 zip series score line.

“I’m sick of hearing how these are hollow victories because Oz are missing key players.”
Hear! Hear! Yes they have had injuries and are missing key players but that is still a bloody good side we beat (what Aus side isn’t?) and we should enjoy it.

And how good is it to finally win the Bledisloe of cricket?
February 19th, 2007 at 4:52 pm
Well how good was the Blackcaps on these two occassions, but if they live up to their past form they could just as well crash and burn as blast the australians of the park.
I think for too long NZ have been totally inconsistant and i think NZ Cricket is doing the players and the public a diservice.
Last year sometime for those that tune into Agenda the resident sports mans said along the lines of that he thought that the gap between NZ domestic cricket and international Cricket had grown wider. I agree with this and think that this is where cricket is being done a diservice. It is time that NZ has a permant NZ A side that may be playing in an aussie comp or playing lesser cricket nationsand the like.
This to me then brings another group of talent up from National level cricket up to a higher level of compitition that is not far below A grade international cricket.

“And how good is it to finally win the Bledisloe of cricket?”
It is good. (As an ex-pat POM, for me NZ beating Australia is the 2nd most enjoyable thing in cricket)
As far as injuries, how much of an influence did Oram have on the game yesterday? Oh, yes, thats right, none, he was injured! If NZ can make do without Oram, surely Australia have little cause for excuse?
Make no mistake, the players in the Aussie side yesterday are very good players. If they wern’t Australian most of them would be representing whatever (cricket playing) country they were from.
What England in the tri series, and now New Zealand (even more emphatically) have done is to prevent good players from performing as a good team.
February 19th, 2007 at 5:19 pm
Yeah, but not THE most enjoyable thing in cricket.
2006/7
Ashes.
5 – 0.
England’s the nil.
February 19th, 2007 at 5:24 pm
Fred,
I liked last years series better, but it is all a matter of opinion and perspective.
Thanks for rubbing it in anyway.

Cricket OT…
Too many bad decisions easily corrected by snicko, lbw cam etc.
Cricket’s indiference to technology can’t last….especially with one dayers
Though Murali will keep throwing unencumbered until he retires, regardless. Reckon we can change the rules again to squeeze at least another 3° to 15 for the bent arm as he gets older..
February 19th, 2007 at 5:57 pm
And let us not forget the boasting we have had to put up with; even a 2nd or 3rd rate Australia can beat any other team. Oh well, that’s that theory blown out of the water.
Though Murali will keep throwing unencumbered until he retires, regardless.
That’s awfully racist of you fred.
February 19th, 2007 at 6:51 pm
Nah….awfully accurate.
