Political Travellers

March 11th, 2008 at 8:35 pm by David Farrar

By coincidence, Jordan Carter was seated next to me on the flight up to Auckland on Saturday morning. I was heading on holiday, while Jordan was off to his selection meeting for Hunua for Labour, where he was selected unopposed. Congratulations Jordan.

I offered to help Jordan write his acceptance speech, but he declined!

On the way back on Monday night, Russel Norman and Jeanette Fitzsimons were on the flight (which was delayed 50 minutes).  Russel chatted to me for a bit and I told him that I had actually praised the Greens online communications, and his blogging specifically, at the Chamber of Commerce meeting on Friday. I’m not sure if he believed me :-) but Adam Smith has blogged that I did speak well of those, who are less charitable towards me.

It all depends what you mean by winning, Winston showed there was more than one way to win an election in Hunua.

DPF, you’ve let two chances to sacrifice yourself for the divine VRWC slip by. You didn’t even attempt to storm the cockpit. I’ve arranged for our re-education officer to visit you… she’s quite recognisable, just look out for a portly dark skinned woman in bright coloured dress.

Just because we don’t offer 70 doe eyed virgins as a bonus for achieving your Key Performance Indicators is no excuse for slacking. Anyway, we have a much better health plan :-D

will jordan be moving to hunua. Or is that just a requirement the left insist on for the right?

Ah yes, the Ol’ hypocritical Greens and flying/driving. Why don’t they teleconference? Could it possibly be because they can’t rely on the stoners and assorted airheads at the other end to turn the TV on, let alone the video link? Or is it that all the computers outside of the Parliamentary office were confiscated in the terror raids?

I’m interested to know about the story that the Greens are split down the middle about the EFA? It sounds like there might be quite a few Green supporters with principles (a legacy of Rod Donald), to counter the anti-EB brigade who cannot see their own hypocrisy.

Not that the current co-leaders are likely to admit to such a split in the ranks.

    DPF:

I don’t know Jordan’s background. Am I right in thinking he’s a Wellingtonian – not an ex-Aucklander? If so, given the close scrutiny (by those with vested political interests) of Key’s Helensville housing arrangement, what are your thoughts on him standing in Hunua (southern Auckland)?

Update: I’ll retract that – his campaign page suggests a reasonable affinity with South Auckland:

Carter was born in Vancouver, but grew up in southern Auckland (Manurewa), and lived in Wellington after completing degrees at the University of Auckland (economics, geography and political science).

However, speaking of Labour and transferring candidates, come on down Maryan Street – (ex-New Plymouth) while on the campaign trail, no doubt she’ll claim to care deeply about the people of Nelson.

Speaking of political travellers – I am in no doubt you Kiwiblog types would be ALL OVER the speaker’s tour today, if it were not for the participation of National MPs in ‘the junket’… not to mention Our Hero Mr John Key appearing very small and weak on the Breakfast show this morning when he attempted to justify that with “but there’s always been a speaker’s tour…”

RRM – Your being a bit harsh on John Key this morning. Nothing he said would have stopped Paul Henry from offering us his expert opinion. The mans a waste of space.

Um apologies for comment-whoring but my one brief comment on PA System today is all I thought it was worth.

[T]o give the junket the little attention it deserves, I was less than impressed by this part of the Prime Minister’s “carefully-honed response” (and one echoed by John Key, to be fair):

    Clark:

“Obviously in election year a lot of people have other things on their mind, like running for Parliament again…

    Key:

“I want my MPs who are seeking re-election to be out there working hard on the campaign trail.”

Oy vey… why don’t we just shut down Parliament in election year since the poor petals have such difficulty multi-tasking? I don’t think I find the junket half as offensive as the rationale.

And on the related Kiwiblog thread yesterday:

    pushmepullu wrote:

Big Bruv, I agree that Key should tell them they’re not to go, and he may yet. I suspect that they actually signed on without his approval.

Look, I’ll stand up for Key against unfair attacks, but you’re defending the indefensible. Every member of that delegation — apart from Margaret Wilson — required leave from their respective party leaders to be absent from the House. Key, Clark and Peters are on the record saying they granted that leave, because everyone else was “too busy” getting ready for the election campaign. I’m sure the electors of Rakaia and Wellington Central will be pleased to know they don’t really matter in the great scheme of things.

And I don’t think the original post, or the majority of comments, were particularly complimentary towards anyone. So, sorry RRM I think your charge of partisan hypocrisy is dismissed.

As for the Breakfast show — I think Jonathan “Jabba The” Hunt on steroids would look small and weak in the shadow of Paul Henry’s unstoppable, asinine and frankly embarrasing monologues. I’d even go further than John Dalley — I don’t know why any politician would waste their time on Breakfast, because they sure seem surplus to requirements.

Look, I generally need megadoses of coffee to be functional at 6am, but what’s Henry’s excuse for being such an idiotic speedball?
