MMP Symposium

Dean Knight has the full details, but here is the short version:
For people who are interested in a systematic assessment of the MMP, the New Zealand Centre for Public Law, in conjunction with Institute of Policy Studies, Victoria University of Wellington
and the Centre for New Zealand Studies, Birkbeck, University of London, is hosting a symposium on MMP and the Constitution on 26 and 27 August 2008 (simultaneously video-cast in London, with a number of international speakers):New Zealand Centre for Public Law

The programme is here. And one can register here. $25 for students, $175 for academics and a fairly expensive $250 for others. I was going to attend until I saw the $250 cost. That’s too much for me, just to cover the event on the blog.

Fuck, is Bill Clinton gonna be there or something?

Love to know why the University of London thought having a Centre for New Zealand Studies was a good idea…

Haha! Actually I think $250 would probably qualify as a deposit on a seat at a Billy Clinton function.

I wish this type of stuff was held in Auckland…why do we always miss out?
August 11th, 2008 at 4:01 pm
Wellington is the politics centre, like it or not.

David, just pay a tame PolSci student $25 to attend on your behalf. JD to make copious notes (or secret recordings!) and hand to you for publication. I’m interested but $250 is too much, but will share the $50 proposed/suggested.

I’d imagine, specially since it’s a video conference, that they’ll hand out a CD/DVD of proceedings to attendees. Get me a copy of that and of all the papers presented and I’ll match getstaffed’s $50 with $50 of my own (at least I think that’s what he’s suggesting). So you’re already down to $150… at this rate you’ll make a profit out of going

Wow…being the Capital I would never have thought…
August 11th, 2008 at 5:21 pm
why are you wondering why we always miss out then?
August 11th, 2008 at 5:37 pm
Rex, it’s $25 for students. so my suggestion should cost $50 all up. sounds like you’ve just become the premier sponsor

Sorry guys, the fees are structured in order to cover the costs of the conference. I know that some people not in the field might find that steep, but in comparison to other scholarly conferences in law its pretty modest. And a bargain when compared with the professional legal conferences, which are often 5 or 10 times the price!
