Memo to TV3
September 22nd, 2008 at 6:45 pm by David FarrarDear TV3,
Scott Campbell on Three News tonight in reporting on the PM’s reaction to the possible free trade agreement with the US, said she was “quite literally blown her away”.
Do I need to point out how silly this statement is.
Unless of course there has been a cyclone you forgot to report on.

Meanwhile something funny happened at TVNZ. A story about John Key “secret” shares was mentioned but never actually screened.
Vote:September 22nd, 2008 at 6:52 pm
It showed at 6.30 pm. About him having more Tranz Rail shares than previously known. He still made an overall loss on them incidentially.
Vote:September 22nd, 2008 at 6:53 pm
Such a shame Clark and co won’t be around to enjoy this FTA though. Oh DIDDUMS!!
Vote:September 22nd, 2008 at 6:55 pm
Metcalph: it was screened! And what a biased set-up by Francesca Mould.
Cullen said in his interview for the piece that Key did NOT commit insider trading.
TVNZ News created a build-up to the piece by repeatedly referring to the fact that it was coming up later in the news. Then Mould took us through the transactions of the Key trust and Key. Key lost money on the transactions! Mould injected a bucket of bias by alleging something like she had never seen him so defensive before, but this was NOT born out by the video clip of Key as she interviewed him. She also greatly exaggerated the significance of the transactions. The whole piece was agitprop for Labour.
Mould and Cullen had the temerity to link Key’s legal transactions to the Peters scandal and Clark’s cover-up of this.
This was a nasty piece of bias by TVNZ. It is as leftist as Radio Moscow was in the old Cold War days. May this State dinosaur go the same way as the Berlin Wall.

I was more annoyed by Hillary Barry’s stupid comment that John Key would be “spitting” over the FTA.
Vote:September 22nd, 2008 at 7:07 pm
TV3′s coverage of the FTA was rather weak and wreaked of political bias. I simply cannot see this being a huge issue on election day with the voters.
TV3 spend too much time cheerleading for Labour.
Vote:September 22nd, 2008 at 7:12 pm
But from what I understand it is not a FTA it is an agreement to start talking about an FTA using the P4 agreements as a template. Chile as yet has not agree to start these talks from my understanding. Although the P4 template has environmental and labour protection clauses that some in the Democrat party may like Obama has spoke strongly against FTA’s and so to move this further we all need to work hard for a McCain Palin victory
Vote:September 22nd, 2008 at 7:22 pm
I want to know how Clark can be blown away if its going to be signed tomorrow. Does she not talk to her Minister of Trade now that he’s lined up to take over from her?
Vote:September 22nd, 2008 at 7:23 pm
It was as an amazing hour of fake news on both channels ————”Spitting” did the Auto Que break down ??
I hope this was the Neutron Bomb because if it was it was a fizzer
Vote:September 22nd, 2008 at 7:24 pm
What is TVNZ doing running stories for the Labour Research Unit?
Vote:September 22nd, 2008 at 7:25 pm
Yup. Not even close to an FTA. It’s simply about talking about one. Will there be one in place in the next 3 years? Unlikely, based on the usual lead in time and the upcoming presidential election. This is simple propaganda. Disappointing TV3 couldn’t provide any critical analysis.
Vote:September 22nd, 2008 at 7:26 pm
I suspect the delay in the story was due to lawyers checking it out.
Vote:September 22nd, 2008 at 7:27 pm

I am sure we will be having another finalisation of a Skyhawks sale.
Vote:Perhaps a few days before the election.
Again.
September 22nd, 2008 at 7:47 pm
If there is one asset sale Key must do its selling up TVNZ to a right wing organisation that tkes no prisioners. Anyone for shares? We could really change attitudes if we removed these Labour bedded tossers.

If anyone like me, wishes to make a complaint about the standard, of reporting tonight on TV One, you can send off an email to them here.

I know that we all can see through Labour’s dirty tricks because of the high standard of information that we receive from the likes of David and the other bloggers
But it is the average person who just gets their news on the 6:00 bulletin, who are most effected by this pathetic piece of “journalism” we were treated to this evening.
Helen will not go without a fight, and her ugly tactics are a reminder that our democracy is worth fighting for.
You gotta love the timing, on the night the Privileges Committee are to release their report.
Vote:Subtle Helen, very subtle.
September 22nd, 2008 at 8:07 pm
LOL. They do get carried away with some of those phrases.
My mother’s pet peeve is people saying, “the proof is in the pudding”. It’s a statement that doesn’t actually mean anything. What the person meant to say was ‘the proof of the pudding is in the eating”, which actually means something.

No wonder people despise the media – they are so obvious in there biases. The way TV3 played up 60 dead soldiers story was sickening, didn’t even mentioned the fact that only 2 aussies had accidently died over the same period. I thought thats it I’m changing TV news channel, then I remembered I stopped watching TV1 for the same reason I you can’t win. Thank god for blogs like David’s. It is a concern that for many though their only source of info is the TV news

Winstone First must be pissed off with Helengrad for promoting a free trade agreement with the P4. She has stolen his chance to shout from the tree tops how great he is and how he has the world eating out of palm. Now he has been relegated in to insignificance!!!
Vote:September 22nd, 2008 at 8:21 pm
Eww… certainly gives a whole new meaning to the phrase gunboat diplomacy.
Meanwhile, back on planet Earth, we don’t actually have a free trade agreement with the US, but their agreement to enter into multi-lateral negotiations with the P4 nations and I don’t think that’s going to be done and dusted at any great speed. So, I’m quite happy the process is starting but let’s not over-egg the pudding because there’s the small technicality of a general election in the United States in six weeks, and a new administration whoever wins. I’d also like to see a reality check on whether US politicians (and the lobbyists and sector groups both parties depend on) have quite the same definition of “free” trade as most readers of this blog.
Vote:September 22nd, 2008 at 8:21 pm
Another masterful TV performance by Mr Key, I was certainly impressed by the way he manged to remember he owned 20,000 shares when he realised that the journalist already knew about it
“50,000 shares at the most”
“Sure about that?”
“Of course!”
“What about the shares you bought in your own name?”
|”Oh I mean 100,000 shares, sorry my mistake”
Still I blame the evil left wing media, if they had destroyed the film after Key’s comedy turn no-one would ever have seen it!
Dirty tricks that’s what it is, imagine anyone holding John Key to the same standards as every other politician?
p.s
Do you think John just lost the election tonight, or just ensured the Nats only get 45%?

An FTA with the US is as useful as having shares in Lehman Bros. If we manage to sell them anything, better be COD. Who is the PM kidding? She recently had a call from Bush requesting her vote to allow India to purchase nuclear thingys from the US, for peaceful purposes of course, oh yes, so this must be the pay back, an empty FTA, won’t be worth the paper it is written on.
Vote:September 22nd, 2008 at 8:33 pm
sonic, is really sad that the only tactic Helen and Co have now is to see if they can dig up dirt. That’s the only way they can think of to win an election now, and it’s only going to get dirtier.
Let’s compare the number of times Helen lied compared with with Key. Looking at the numbers sure puts Helen’s “trust” platform in a different light.
Vote:September 22nd, 2008 at 8:42 pm
I don’t agree that TV3 has an obvious Labour bias. In fact a few months back, I wondered whether Duncan Garner was pitching for a cushy job in John Key’s office post-election (admittedly, he has been a bit more difficult to read of late).
And has anyone else noticed the similarities between the backdrop to the revamped TV3 newsroom and the National party billboards?! How long before Labour cottons on and complains to the Electoral Commission

Actually, the FTA and India aren’t linked. It’s more likely that the paypack involved a toilet, a diplomatic passport, and a quiet word from the State Dept to the LAX airport police.

TVNZ’s reporting tonight was demonstrably biased.
1. We had the smear about John Key repeated two or three times before the story was actually run, all the better to let it sink into the viewer’s psyche. Strange how the so-called “technical difficulties” didn’t prevent them from bashing him over and over.
2. We had positive footage of Klark sitting knee-to-knee with George Bush (although some US-haters might see that as not to her benefit).
3. Another positive story for Klark where she was panning Fonterra and proving how much she loves ickle babies.
4. Agree with Jack5, Key was nowhere near as defensive as Mold implied. But he did look a little on the back foot. Still seemed fairly affable though.
The only thing that surprised me was that Cullen didn’t use the opportunity to say that Key had lost money overall and did we really want a man with those skills running the country?
Vote:September 22nd, 2008 at 8:51 pm
Oh joy, oh joy, I thought they would never see the light – my 70 year old parents who have voted Labour for ever and who used to talk to me about the soviet union as if it was paradise have finally had enough and will NOT vote labour this election. Keep it up Helen.

Unbelievably I understand they are going to vote National – thinking goes along the lines of “we want that woman out and the only option we can see to do that is to vote National, a vote for anyone else wont do that”
Vote:I’m stunned – they have been blind labour voters, unopen to any reason or debate, at any rate, none that I have been privy to.

Yeah, John Key is an inside trader who loses money
Vote:Evil and stupid
September 22nd, 2008 at 9:07 pm
Wow lots of words
The guts of it is:
1. Honest John Key bought shares in Transrail
2. He talked them up using his position as an MP
3. He then sold the shares
4. He made lots of money
5. When asked he did not mention that he had bought or sold the shares or used his position as Transport Spokesperson to ask questions about the company
6. He may have lost money on all of his shareholding but he would have lost a lot more if he had not done this transaction.
And I thought the deep dark secret involved Bill English and emails. This is far more damaging than that …

“Shame they can’ty sell Three too!”
Mainstream media is just full of leftist plants. They’re not worth spit.
The “free trade agreement” is a beat up too, an attempt by Klark media sycophants to improve her standing. In reality, there’s very little there. An agreement to enter into multi-lateral talks that may be finalised in ten years or so?? What worthless bullshit.
This is not the bi-lateral trade agreement we should have.
Just left wing propaganda megaphoned by Labour’s contemptible cronyists and toadies in the media.
Vote:September 22nd, 2008 at 9:35 pm
There will be a nice synergy with the Chinese and US free trade agreements.
We can export all our prime quality beef to the US, and then at the supermarket buy some very nice beef for dinner tonight “packed in New Zealand from local and imported ingredients”.

Here’s something odd. The English bloke on TVNZ news tonight was interviewing Guyon Espiner. Guyon said that he thought that the minor Key scandal developing was an attempt by Labour to get the Peters scandal to take a back seat. He was almost certainly correct.
But – and this is the kicker – he “predicted” that the Peters scandal would be the lead story of the day tomorrow.
He does not have to “predict” anything of the sort. He is part of the media – in fact he is the leading political journalist on the leading news network in the nation – AND THUS HELPS SET THE AGENDA.
No matter if you are on the left or the right, you really have to worry about the standard of journalism in this country.
Vote:September 22nd, 2008 at 11:01 pm
I’d like to see TV1 sold to Fox, or Rupert Murdoch. That way there would be one fairly reliabe MSM outlet.

The FTA with China has been a tremendous success. Everywhere is China right now the populous screaming for New Zealand diary products. Just can’t get enough of the milk.
The question is if we get a FTA with the US will we be able to supply the market with enough DDT laced beef?
Vote:September 23rd, 2008 at 10:06 am
a3catlady – I have experienced the same thing, although to a slightly lesser degree, but I can’t help thinking that, while this is influencing current polling, that once such voters are actually in their stall, they may not necessarily be able to go all the way and walk the walk. It is much easier to say talk the talk when there is actually nothing at stake – which is what makes polling quite unreliable. That is why I think National needs to consider the polls very carefully, because they can hide an awful lot of reality.
That said, the current National party do offer a viable centrist/socialist alternative to Labour, but old habits really do die hard…
