Was listening to the radio last night and the hosts were encouraging people to enrol to vote, that’s cool. They then went on to say “don’t vote national, our country has done pretty well for the last 9 years and we don’t want those evil right wingers to come in and mess things up”. That’s not so cool. I wish they taught economics from a young age at school. GDP is not a competing type of hair straightener and OECD is not an inability to concentrate.
Prime Minister Helen Clark faced a barrage of tough questions from Owairaka Primary School students this morning.
Billed as the Kiddie Conference, the nine, 10 and 11 year-olds from the Prime Minister’s electorate in Mt Albert quizzed Helen Clark on everything from law and order and education too housing and transport policy.
Celia asked the Prime Minister if she would give schools more money because “the Government doesn’t give schools a lot of money and that’s why we have to fundraise a lot”.
The Prime Minister replied: “But gala days are fun aren’t they?”
I bet our bloody PM has never baked a cake in her life!
As a parent who has, like the thousands of other parents around New Zealand in order to pay for the things
at schools our taxes are supposed to go towards I find her comment reprehensible.
I didn’t see her giving up her time for the school makeover the other day
JK was there – I guess as a parent it comes naturally to him to give of his time freely to help out schools.
This is just one more reason why we need less childless lesbians and more actual parents in parliament.
My children once went to a decile 10 state primary school where the teaching was a side issue to the actual fund raising. It was a relief when they finally left, to get some of my spare time back.
Parents have had a gutsful of fundraising and this PM has the cheek to say the other night that school donations are optional. Yeah Right!!!
Glutaemus Maximus – It would be nice to think that you are correct. I would love to see you win, but… I am starting to believe that Helen will manage to cobble together Labour/Green/Progressive/Maori/NZF lovefest to cling onto power.
Now we all know that this would be a difficult coalition to hold together (even if you take out NZF, the greens and maori won’t be happy partners) – but she doesn’t care as she will bugger off after 18 months and let some other schmuck holding the baby.
You can get balance from Leighton Smith 9am to noon Monday to Friday. He is very anti socialist/communist but is not a National cheerleader by any means.
Good post democracymum. I went to a small rural primary school (Glenroy), that ranged between 9 and 16 pupils while I was there. It was closed by the Ministry of Education soon after I left. I realise now that if we had funding following the child this school, which had served the community well for over a century, could well be still running today. There would have been no motivation to shut it down, as it would cost the Ministry exactly the same wherever the students went. The board would have known exactly what money they had from the government, and made their own decisions as to how to balance the books (cost-cutting, fundraising, fees etc). But instead the heart was ripped out of our community by the dictation of the Ministry.
Well, the Ministry didn’t technically shut it down. They blackmailed the Board into shutting it down so it wouldn’t appear on the Ministry’s books. The deal was something like if the Board shut the school all fundraising money, computers etc would go with the students to their next school, if the Ministry shut it they would not be allowed to keep anything. So the Board shut the school. Which just goes to show you have to take government statistics on such matters with a large pinch of salt.
Great post Democracy Mum, as a mum of 3 I am frustrated and tired at the need to fundraise for what should be considered quite basic items. We have a new school being built in our area (oh joy) and guess what…… before it even opens its doors we are fundraising for a playground – seems the ministry pays for buildings, etc etc but not a playground for the children.
If I could count the number of cakes I have baked and hours I have given, quite apart from the dollars I have given also, and maybe get a tax credit or something for them I would be grateful.
Because for every one like us there would have to be a dozen, who sit back and watch us work our butts off to provide things for our schools that their children will take advantage of too. Probably the same ones that happily take our tax dollars in hand outs from the government too. I feel a rant coming on………. time to post this and get back to work.
“You can get balance from Leighton Smith 9am to noon Monday to Friday. He is very anti socialist/communist but is not a National cheerleader by any means.”
Leighton is IMHO one of the best broadcasters in NZ, but if you want the real deal, then listen via the net to ex Ronald Reagan staffer and constitutional lawyer Mark Levin on WABC. His shows can also be downloaded from his website in a 16mb (approx) mp3 file. If I can’t listen to him on line, I download and listen while I’m travelling. There is nobody like Levin for clarity of thought and common sense on most political issues. Take Redbaiter’s word for it. He’s the best by a light year.
Helen the drongo gets “quizzed” by 10 and 11 year olds.
Imagine her horror when her aide points out they’re too young to vote. Can only suggest he was looking for a group of heavily monitored and controlled people who couldn’t out-think her and wouldn’t dismiss her views.
Galas are fun for the attendees but not for the poor people guilted into organising them.
Is Helen involved in any committees where they do fundraising? I’m guessing that at her level in the Labour party she isn’t expected to do ring arounds to get people along to fundraising events.
Could we discuss the worst case scenario in which Labour, the Greens and NZ First all make it back into parliament?
Scary I know but really, how could it work?
The progressives and I assume the Maori parties would also make up part of that mix.
So we would have a government where one part has banned BZP, where another part would liberalise drug laws. One co-alition partner would limit immigration to benefit NZers, while another would cap the population and leave room for increased immigration of climate change refugees. Where one co-alition partner campaigned on keeping Kiwibank, and another wants to float it as a public company.
These are just the stated differences. I am hopeful that this government will not come to pass but it needs to be considered where such a government would take us.
You can also have Tariana wanting to get rid of the dole, holding hands with Sue Bradford giving it out to any “no-hoper” that can’t be bothered working.
You are correct Chaucey, Ms Clark is on record as saying that she distances herself from the fundraising activities of her political party.
That is why they keep Mike Williams around as the travelling bagman, collecting donations around the world, promising positions and honours in exchange for filthy lucre.
Somehow being divorced from the practicalities that are a necessary part of the economics of keeping an organisation solvent are improper/unladylike/dirty/unfitting of a leader/unnecessary when running an economy (choose which to delete).
Is it just me, or do I notice in the case of schools everywhere I go, that the ones in LOWER DECILE areas that have for years been getting “compensatory” additional funding from the gummint, are still the ones that look as though they lack money to mend broken windows, let alone buy the right gear for the science lab?
My son goes to an independent boys school and we fund raise all the time for building improvements, class room aids and scholarships. People who don’t get involved in this type of thing have no idea how much time and effort it takes. People like Clark who have no idea about raising kids would have even less.
And yes, this is a dig at Childless by Choice Clark as much as it is a dig at my brother without kids who tells me how to raise mine or my mates without kids who moan about things impinging on their time.
Does anyone else consider this election has basically become a First Past the Post election with only one giant electorate?
From a voter point of view on one side is National and ACT. On the other side is Labour, Greens, NZF and the Progressives. The only undeclared parties are United and the Maori, which at most will have 8 MPs between them.
With ACT likely to win Epsom, no party vote for National or ACT will be wasted. However, party votes for NZF could be wasted, because they are unlikely to win an electorate and may not get 5%. From a National / ACT point of view the closer NZF get to 5%, without actually reaching 5%, the better. Whereas for Labour etc, NZF need to either get 5% or get a very small percentage.
Ironically this also means that regardless of the result, NZF may still be the kingmaker!!
I wondered the same tknorriss. Although I see that:
The following are not election advertisements:
…
(c) any content of a radio or television programme, other than advertising material, that has been selected by, or with the authority of, a broadcaster (within the meaning of the Broadcasting Act 1989) solely for the purpose of informing, enlightening, or entertaining its audience:
EDIT: Heh, although it sounds like labrator was not informed or enlightened, and certainly not entertained!
GeorgeFM was the station, Auckland based jazz and dance music radio station, also online. It’s a sort of a grown up BfM with lots of different slots for different types of music. I was very much thinking that if the djs knew that they could get fined as a result of the leglislation their dear Labour Party had past, they might not be singing Labour’s praises so loftily!
Not really, another reason to listen to it. Why every radio station needs to have a half-baked news update every hour is beyond me, I’m listening for the music!
Will ACT win Epsom, a little bird tells me that would be Labour voters are being encouraged to vote for Worth with their electoral vote.
Dirty pool, of course, just natural Labour behavior
Nice bloke Rodders, but he is in the way.
Hey, we will be doing him a favour, he will have more time to chase young
women.
Guys, there’s a pretty interesting bit of discourse going on between Chris Trotter and a Maori bloke called Dire Straits. This “cheeky Maori” seems to be in the know about the MP and the possibility that they’ll go with NATIONAL…really upset Chris and he’s replied with talk of WAR if the MP turn against Labour!!! http://www.policy.net.nz/blog/2008/10/20/democracy-citizenship-the-maori-party/
I see the army have celebrated the theft of the medals with a big ceremony for the return of them.
Surrounded by military police, the thives stole the medals and the only way they got them back is to pay the thieves.
Then today a big celebration to celebrate the crime of the century for Waiuru.!!!
My wife’s comments on the party ads last night….on Labours:
“Geez, that’s a bit nasty. What a cow. Why don’t they tell me what they will do instead of just knocking Key? They didn’t even knock National, but Key personally. That is nasty.”
Then on Nationals:
He’s driving in the front seat without a seatbelt, what kind of message is that to send out? Idiot.
So well done National. Labour pissed her off but she didn’t even hear what Key said because she was so hung up on the no- seatbelt thing!
I don’t see what all the uproar about a National-Maori coalition is. The work that would have to be put in to make it work for both parties would probably lead to some innovative outcomes, and anything that actually helps Maori instead of removing any incentive to better themselves (via more and more benefits) has to be a good thing. Sharples and Turia would be quite good in Government I think, and reasonably easily accomodated by John Key, who definately doesn’t seem as closed mind as traditional right- or left-wingers.
Patrick I saw your comments about the pig cells and diabetics on NZ Herald site.
Although I’m sure they were tongue in check I found them unhelpful as they added to the general misinformation of that particular blog.
Both my father, cousin and wife have Type 1 diabetes. For clarification none of them vote Labour and Type 1 is genetic and not caused by obesity or poor eating habits.
This decision has the potential to make the biggest impact on the lives of nearly 10,000 kiwis living with Type 1 diabetes and for once Labour should be applauded.
As you can see from the comments on the Herald site there is already nut bars screaming anti-GM threats, and its their own fault for eating sugar.

Stories like this one, about the “arty” fraternity worshipping at the altar of socialism, make me SICK. Don’t these people have ANY sense of the violence done TO artists and the cause of artistic freedom generally, BY socialism? Does this Jazz enthusiast DJ have ANY IDEA of what happened to wannabe Jazz enthusiasts in the former USSR? Or the composers like Prokofiev and Shostakovich?
Art is usually the medium of dissent. The stupid thing is, these arty people in free countries don’t know when to STOP. As Joni Mitchell sang, “You don’t know what you got until it’s gone”. She was talking about trees, but she doesn’t have the foggiest idea about how much that statement applies to freedom. She is one of these people that the blogger Fjordman talks about, that regards “freedom” as all about and only about the “sexual revolution” kind of freedom.
Trouble is, by the time the Arts fraternity has woken up, it is too late – for them AND everybody else. They are still fighting the battles of 200 years ago against slavery and serfdom and oppression of the proletariat, and they can’t see that the wheel has just about gone right round to the start again and they are now fighting in the cause of MORE serfdom, not less.
Southern raider. Yes it was tongue in cheek – I’m surprised they actually printed it. I only get about 1 in 5 on that site
Sorry about that – no offence intended
Remember that Helen’s chances all largely rest on NZF crossing the 5% theshold (they wont win an electorate seat) and I just do not see this happening. Now of course Nationals hopes to some extent rest on getting the MP on side, and despite their policy of “going back to their people to ask them”, the fact is that of the Nats win 45% or more of the vote and Labour are under the 40% mark, they will most likely go with National, because to their credit, both Tariana and Pits understand that the long term well being of both their people and the Maori seats depends on being able to work with National. They also know that they will be far more able to win policy concession from the Nats than from Labour.
“It was supposed to be that if a client required it, a sex worker could be hired, rather than for care workers to carry out masturbation of clients.”
Does that mean that under Labour taxpayer money is used to fund sex for the intellectually disabled?
Hmmmm … raises some interesting questions.
Is it compulsory?
Is there a queue to be certified intellectually disabled?
Does National have a policy of funding lower taxation rates by stopping the state’s spending under Labour on the masturbation of the intellectually disabled?
Patrick feel free to savage the Green party supporters on the site pulling out the anti-GE line and stating a pigs life is more important than a humans.
So we can breed pigs to eat them, but we can’t breed them to save people?
Leighton Smith pointed out this morning about the Green Parties language referring to us as just another “species”
I’m not a species, I’m at the top of the food chain so get in my fuckin belly!
Good one Rod, I think the issue (masturbation) does raise some interesting questions, for example, could it be expanded to include the lesbians and gays as, intellectually disabled they must be to carry out such practices, after all, Helen is so generous at the moment….and they would not want to be discriminated against …..surely…
Yes Labour has taken tax payers money, yes it is cynical but because it is not illegal lets just move on and find something the National Party has done wrong.
“Does National have a policy of funding lower taxation rates by stopping the state’s spending under Labour on the masturbation of the intellectually disabled?”
Now I’ve heard everything, tax payers money to help intellectually disabled squeeze the squid.
The poor people are probably just pointing to go to the toilet and then some govt funded whore turns up and introduces them to mrs PALMer.
What a flaming joke this country is becoming.
Medals Return to Army Museum, and so our brave paid soldiers engage yet again on a haka, why so many hakas, and to inane objects like medals? Ah, this must be part of the training…of course, silly me, they get fit by dancing….they could do the tango instead, lots of leg work……
sorry, I should have been clearer, but I was only referring to the news programs themselves, not the opinion programs that come after.
If we are talking about them then I fully agree. Despite being a lefty (at least I think he is), John Campbell is a very objective, fair and balanced pundit and interviewer, a genuinely decent guy and entertaining to watch. Sainsbury is a biased joke, who allows lefties a free reign to rant and never asks them hard questions.
Re Winston peters and Kiwibank, here’s a scenario that might be worth considering.
First, the facts:
1. Peters has already made it clear that he will not support a govenrment that includes the Greens.
2. John Key has said that after the election his party will not work with Winston Peters.
3. Whichever party wins the election will need to raise money quickly, and from within NZ, to keep the banking system afloat. One way of doing this is to float 40% of Kiwibank, with a stipulation that only NZ residents can buy the shares. the same would go with Kiwirail, although that is such a dog that no-one with any business sense would buy shares in it.
Following the election, National gains the most seats and votes, but falls short of a majority. NZ First gets back into Parliament, but Peters realises that a Labour-NZ First-Greens-Maori Party-Jim Anderton party government is untenable. the banking system is on the verge of collapse, and John Key is forced to choose between tax cuts and injecting money into the banking suystem. Peters offers to go with National, with the understanding that Kiwibank can be floated on his terms, and that National must uphold NZ First’s commitments to NZ Superannuation (which National has already done). This enables National to go through with tax cuts, and to allow partial privatisation.
Either Key puts the Party ahead of himself, and resigns as National Party leader. Bill English becomes PM, and Winston Peters becomes deputy PM
or Key and Peters argue the accommodation is for the national (small ‘n’) good, and Key stays on. Neither Nationals, ACTs, or NZ First’s supporters complain.
Hey CraigM.
I looked closely at the John Key videos with him in the front seat. I worried that he wasn’t wearing a seat belt. However, in one part of the film you can see part of the belt poking out from the car wall, so I think he is actually wearing the belt.
There are some screen captures over at geekzone forum that show the belt, which you should be able to google for.
For fuck’s sake people – who gives a shit if he is wearing a seatbelt? Do you realise that you are only uncomfortable about it because of a successful propaganda campaign by labour? If you don’t wear your seatbelt, your tiny chance of being killed in an accident is increased slightly. The reason we wear our seatbelts is because labour want to save ACC costs. If you don’t want to wear one you shouldn’t have to! Abolish ACC and let people do what the fuck they like and suffer the consequences at their own expense. We used to drive cars with a dozen kids piled in the back on each others knees – no seatbelts. No one seemed to think there was a problem until Labour started with the propaganda to tell us it was wicked and evil.
How ridiculous is it that we are now zooming in on photos to prove that John Key was wearing a seatbelt because if he wasn’t it is clearly from the devil?! Who gives a shit? If they crash and he dies because of it – it was his choice. Labour – get the fuck out of my house and my car!
Oh – and Chaucey (who said: “I worried that he wasn’t wearing a seat belt.”) I hope you are a woman – because if you aren’t, you just gave up your right to your man-card.
Here’s general debate for you and this is a serious question.
What is to become of Kiwiblog after Nov 8 if national does win the election?
I mean the whole point of this blog has become about what dirty little buggers the rest of society is and that National is almighty and all knowledgeable and seemingly without fault.
I mean in National get in, and they are without fault, what the hell are you all going to moan about. Do you start getting a posse up and paying a vist to those in the neighbourhood which don’t meet the expectations of the right (don’t laugh Jenny Shipley urged us all to look over the fence to see who is sleeping in who’s bed – on national TV).
Or does Kiwiblog just die down to a trickle of posts and comments about ‘told you so’ and ‘aren’t we brilliant’. See Simon Power moaned that Labour didn’t ‘Stomp’ out crime, so I look forward to this government eradication of crime and the back slapping mutual admiration society that will be kiwiblog.
Don’t tell me you’d actually be critical of crap National government decisions, oh I don’t know like the ones that have already got the back up of Business New Zealand, Manufacturers and Exporters Association, Bernard Hickey, Infometrics and most other right wing thinkers including Rodney Hide recently. Can’t be true National with fault? Say it ain’t true.
Paul, we’re going to spend our spare time after the election, looking for pinko fuckwits like YOU. When located we are going to give them such a TASERING that they’ll be too frightened to ever be seen near a polling booth again! We’ll then come back to KiwiBlog to compare notes and issue awards for number of proven ‘kills’ etc (need a friend with mobile phone to record action and upload to YouTube).
Actually dumbfuck, we’ll all go back to managing our own lives have achieving our goal of bringing down the evil witch and her army of goblins! Suggest you slink away and find a good sewer to hole up in, before we track you down…

Would have expected someone or group from the AXIS of Weevil to have taken up the wager by now?
Or are they expecting to hammered at the election on the 8th?
Kind of tells me everything.
Talk is cheap and it costs nothing to posture!
October 21st, 2008 at 3:21 pm
If they are telling people how to vote, is that a breach of the EFA? It seems that Shane Jones has just been done for exactly the same thing.
October 21st, 2008 at 3:25 pm

October 21st, 2008 at 3:45 pm
It’s a sort of a grown up BfM
Does George even have a news department? bFM’s pretty damned professional these days, you know.
October 21st, 2008 at 3:55 pm
Not really, another reason to listen to it. Why every radio station needs to have a half-baked news update every hour is beyond me, I’m listening for the music!
October 21st, 2008 at 3:56 pm

New subject….
I see the army have celebrated the theft of the medals with a big ceremony for the return of them.
Surrounded by military police, the thives stole the medals and the only way they got them back is to pay the thieves.
Then today a big celebration to celebrate the crime of the century for Waiuru.!!!
they should hang their heads in shame

“GeorgeFM was the station……”
No worries then, no one else was listening.
October 21st, 2008 at 4:51 pm
BTW, where ARE all the lefties with their bitching about the US election being bought by big bucks?
Silly me, it’s all fine and dandy when it’s the left spending the big bucks. Doh.
The hypocrits are in hiding. It must be embarrassing when your belief system and associated arguments come crashing down around you. I’d STFU too.
October 21st, 2008 at 4:56 pm
Yes but John Key was still buying and selling those train shares, wasn’t he?
What I find freaky is that he was asking questions in open house, and this qualifies him as an inside trader?
We need to talk about Vela donations, and scampi quotas.
So which famous politicians have shares in insulation product companies?
October 21st, 2008 at 5:08 pm
Where are the Government up to with the sale of those SKYHAWKS?
There must be a deal on the table by now?
How much did we get?
Wasn’t Lord Ashcroft horrible for offering as reward for the return of the medals?
Duncan Garner was quite right to stick a microphone unders Keys nose and demand to know who had met Ashcroft?
So has Labour met up with Ken Livingston, or Neil Kinnock, or Peter Mandelson?
October 21st, 2008 at 5:08 pm

October 21st, 2008 at 6:16 pm
Trouble is, by the time the Arts fraternity has woken up, it is too late – for them AND everybody else. They are still fighting the battles of 200 years ago against slavery and serfdom and oppression of the proletariat, and they can’t see that the wheel has just about gone right round to the start again and they are now fighting in the cause of MORE serfdom, not less.

Southern raider. Yes it was tongue in cheek – I’m surprised they actually printed it. I only get about 1 in 5 on that site
Sorry about that – no offence intended
October 21st, 2008 at 6:24 pm

Here is another interesting issue:
http://www.3news.co.nz/News/NationalNews/Careworkers-allegedly-ordered-to-masturbate-intellectually-impaired-clients/tabid/423/articleID/76623/cat/64/Default.aspx
October 21st, 2008 at 6:38 pm
I see Tauranga Boys High have had their mock election which has been uncannily accurate in predicting the real election result in the past.
National had 71% of the party vote
Labour had 16%.
October 21st, 2008 at 6:41 pm
Patrick feel free to savage the Green party supporters on the site pulling out the anti-GE line and stating a pigs life is more important than a humans.
So we can breed pigs to eat them, but we can’t breed them to save people?
Leighton Smith pointed out this morning about the Green Parties language referring to us as just another “species”
I’m not a species, I’m at the top of the food chain so get in my fuckin belly!
October 21st, 2008 at 6:43 pm
Good one Rod, I think the issue (masturbation) does raise some interesting questions, for example, could it be expanded to include the lesbians and gays as, intellectually disabled they must be to carry out such practices, after all, Helen is so generous at the moment….and they would not want to be discriminated against …..surely…
October 21st, 2008 at 6:46 pm
See Comrade Garner on TV3.
Yes Labour has taken tax payers money, yes it is cynical but because it is not illegal lets just move on and find something the National Party has done wrong.
October 21st, 2008 at 7:08 pm
It is simply not worth watching TV3 anymore. Garner is not only biased, he’s rabidly dishonest. Then again, NZ is not well served by either channel.
October 21st, 2008 at 7:13 pm
Lee have to slightly disagree. John Campbell just did a brilliant piss take of the Labour Over 60’s book.
It shows where all our hard earned money goes.
The book has important hits to old people like
- don’t go out with bundles of money
- don’t cross a busy road
October 21st, 2008 at 7:39 pm
“Does National have a policy of funding lower taxation rates by stopping the state’s spending under Labour on the masturbation of the intellectually disabled?”
Now I’ve heard everything, tax payers money to help intellectually disabled squeeze the squid.
The poor people are probably just pointing to go to the toilet and then some govt funded whore turns up and introduces them to mrs PALMer.
What a flaming joke this country is becoming.
October 21st, 2008 at 7:42 pm
Back to the Tauranga Boys High mock election.
This result, if translated to election day, is an increase to 71% from 45% (which was the national share of the party vote in Tauranga in ‘05)
If this is representative of the pulse of the nation, I can’t wait for Nov 8

October 21st, 2008 at 7:54 pm
Southern Raider,
sorry, I should have been clearer, but I was only referring to the news programs themselves, not the opinion programs that come after.

October 21st, 2008 at 10:17 pm
October 21st, 2008 at 10:22 pm
Who’s the PM on the Mic? You know who this is.
The 56 most powerful woman in the world. Bitches.
October 21st, 2008 at 10:55 pm
October 21st, 2008 at 10:57 pm

Just a thought.

Part 5 – is just damn scary, although NZ gets a good mention.
