The transitional relief package

National announced yesterday the relief package for those who lose their jobs during this period of global recession. It is up to $160 a week for 16 weeks for those with high accommodation costs.
Strangely one of the criticisms from Labour has been people who get a redundancy payout of over $25,000 will not be eligible.
Labour really don’t get this concept of limited funds, so you target to the most needy. But hey it is good to see Labour concerned about those who get redundancy payouts equal to one year on the minimum wage or seven months on the average wage.

This is the type of package that Labour would put out. I don’t understand why labour are criticizing this.
Is there a rule in politics, to always deride opposition ideas even those you agree with?

Is the eligibility for these payouts to be back-dated and do they apply to those made redundant by the ballot box?

Wreck: Yeah, the function of the opposition in a democracy is basically to pick holes in what the government does, right or wrong, to keep them honest. Yes they look like dorks saying this, but that’s what they’re there for.

The whole package strikes me as odd.
Why not asses individual needs, rather than making it open slather (up to a point).
So farrar gets made redundant, gets 25k payout and has 7900 in bank and qulaifies for the “relief”.
Poor old billy gets 25,100 payout, has nothing in the bank and misses out.

Damn – I’m so glad that I’ve been forking out all that money for Income Protection Insurance for all this time…

I am not sure this has been well thought out, those who have done the prudent thing and put some savings away or those who have been saving for a home are going to get nothing while those who have splashed out their cash will get a hand out from the tax payer.
Once again the message we get from the government is don’t save for your retirement or don’t worry about personal responsibility as the government will bail you out.

“Yes they look like dorks saying this, but that’s what they’re there for.”
Labour forgot to call for the Minister to resign! They’ll get there though.
