Telecom have just pulled the plug on Ferrit. I only ask why it took so long…..

Have all Theresa Gattungs commercial decisions failed (see aapt, ferrit)? She was pretty good where telecom had a monopoly though 🙂

“Ms Gattung left Telecom NZ with a special payment of $NZ1.8 million, which included a bonus for “revised restraint of trade favourable to the company”. She also received a salary of $NZ3.3 million for the year, which included performance and long-term incentives of $NZ2.07 million. Her total pay a year earlier was $NZ2.2 million.”

And remember, these “bonuses” are paid before all the chickens have time to roost.

Of course, her repalcement has hardly set the world on fire, but he pulls in half a mil more than she did. Just what DOES he do to earn it?

Ferrit was never going to work. I met with them when they started. When they said they wouldnt enter into discounting like amazon.. i decided to stay away.

typical boring telecom. offer stuff on a website at full price and charge a heap of freight.

GE Money has run out of money …

CREDIT-CARD companies are notorious for pushing customers to increase their credit limits but at least one has bucked the trend because of the financial crisis.

GE Money, which is behind cards such as the Coles Group Card, the Myer Visa Card, GE Money Mastercard and interest-free store cards for furniture retailers including Super A-Mart, has made a ”strategic decision” to limit some customers’ spending potential.

Financial expert Noel Whittaker said the response to the credit crunch shows how much the finance giant is suffering.

”Basically what this means is that GE doesn’t have the money to keep lending to people and so they have to restrict what their customers can spend,” Mr Whittaker said.

”You could say they’re being responsible by capping people’s debt but that won’t be why they’re doing it. They’ll be doing it because they’ve run out of money.”

The Sixties.
I am about to start writing my essay on “the Age of Environmentalism” which began in the sixties and which followed what I have decided to call the Age of Conflict which followed the generally recognised Age of Napolean.

As late as the mid fifties Isaiah Berlin was able to write that the history of modern political ideas was all based on political theories developed during the Age of the Enlightenment and which were forged in the crucible of the French Revolution.
He never foresaw that the next decade would bring together a set of political ideas which would turn that whole “tradition” on its head.

I was at Berkeley in the late sixties and observed or participated in all the “events” which we generally associate with that decade but I do not know of anyone who has recognised that the sixties actually gave birth to the most powerful political ideology of the last fifty years.

One of the challenges (which I believe I have finally resolved) is how to show that Rouseau’s “greenness” was nothing to do with the beliefs of the Green movement today. His Romantic ideals referred to nature but nature was to be drawn as a resource to enable to man to achieve the Enlightenment progress towards perfectibility.
If you want to see Rousseau’s position spelled out in plain “language” watch “the Darling Buds of May”.
Rousseau’s core belief was Liibertarian – man had to perfectly free from coercion but he believed that could only work in he listened to the voice of nature.
The sixties arguments included the case for World Government. (Along with Nature being at risk, fossil fuel global warming, hatred of the motor car and the need for a new “sustainable” economy.)
The idea of a world government was total anathema to Rousseau so he would not have had a bar of current environmentalism.

Should be fun. And I look forward to any comments or critiques or useful thoughts.

Key’s going to have to grow some balls. I note that he’s quoted in the Herald as saying his ministers will be meeting this week following criticism that they aren’t reacting fast enough to the economic crisis.

If he’s going to be anything more than a one-term wonder he needs to begin stamping HIS authority on issues and not have an agenda set by the media or failed Labour politicians.

That should be interesting, since man adhering to many natural laws, or even attempting to interpret and apply natural laws, would be recognised by human consciousness as a coercive philosophy. How to escape the pathetic fallacy or anthropomorphism? Alternately, man would need a god to interpret nature for him. Again, god’s laws are percieved as coercion.

So you’re going to write the next great religious philosophy? 😉

Interesting post @3.54 McShane.

As a keen foodie and occasional food writer I am interested in this topic from the foodie perspective. For example there is a great deal of rubbish written about ‘rustic’ food such as shepherd’s pie. This dish originated as part of the post-industrial nostalgia for the countryside, which was rearing its head in Victorian times.

A lot of environmentalism is just a sentimentality for a non-existant world – as later manifested by 4WD vehicles among urban dwellers 🙂

This rushing back to Wellington for a meeting with his cabinet ministers is bullshit, he looks like he is reacting to a story in the Herald or reacting to the words of a thoroughly discredited ex PM.

A word to the wise Mr Key, Kiwi’s like strong decisive PM’s, they (kiwi’s) are dumb enough to elect people like Klark simply because she came across as strong, if you want to stay as PM then you need to harden up and stop reacting to every utterance the ex PM makes or every slightly negative story in the Herald.

One of the problems of writing anything about Rousseau’s philosophy is that it is full of contradictions. I sometimes wonder if that is what inspired Marx to focus on the “contradictions of capitalism”.

Rousseau seems to be saying that if we listen to the voice of nature (for which the nightingales are the metaphor in the Darling Buds,) then we will not be coerced because we will fall into a natural harmony – any more than a jazz fan is coerced when he taps his feet to Oscar Peterson.
