How the news rates
March 30th, 2009 at 12:00 pm by David FarrarSomehow I have ended up on the press release list for TVNZ News. But you see some interesting stuff, including their boast sheet of the ratings for their news shows vs TV3. This is for all viewers 5+.
| TVNZ | TV3 | TVNZ % | |
| Business News | 37,630 | 12,470 | 75% |
| Breakfast News | 113,350 | 26,470 | 81% |
| Midday News | 109,500 | 30,620 | 78% |
| 6 pm News | 547,710 | 303,370 | 64% |
| 7pm CA | 437,700 | 188,590 | 70% |
| Late News | 162,580 | 143,240 | 53% |
The percentages are my calculation, being TVNZ’s share of the viewers watching the two channels. 50% means equal numbers watching TVNZ and TV3 News.
On a percentage basis TVNZ does best with the Breakfast slot, gaining four times as many viewers as TV3′s Sunrise.
The main news bulletin is more competitive with only a 2:1 advantage. However at 7 pm it gets more pronounced with Close Up having a larger gap over Campbell Live.
The slot where TV3 gets closest, interestingly, is the late news slot. Is this a Nightline legacy from the days of Belinda Todd?

Those stats will come in handy when the Government gets around to selling TVNZ.

The interesting thing I’ve noted about these figures is that often when they get sent round TV3′s morning business show is getting only about 1,500 viewers, whereas TVNZ’s is always in the 25,000+ realm. The figures have even twice carried an asterisk noting that they’d checked and the tiny audiences for TV3 business were correct – not much more than a thousand viewers. ASB must surely be reconsidering sponsorship. And Michael whats-his-name must be regretting leaving TVNZ.

Chalk one up for free speech and for Paul Henry.

In the past, the spin doctors at 3 have done a great job of releasing very narrow selective stats which have shown their news to be competitive with TVNZ in some demographics – Auckland household shoppers aged between 29-31 who drive Volvos, like Hubbards bran and favour the missionary position.
If I were ASB I’d be seriously thinking about pulling my sponsorship. As I understand it, they are quite often beaten by the repeat of Te Karere which plays on One at 5.30am. 3 must surely be very close to canceling some shows, given they have huge debt problems that they are reportedly struggling to cover.

Thank Pagliacco Henry for their runaway success at breakfast time.
You have to laugh sometimes, but that clown’s willingness to spout on national television the kind of utter, utter BS that I would lower my voice before discussing between friends in a restaurant is, evidently, what the public wants. Not the news or any sane discussion of it. A sad commentary on the mentality of the nation…

Could we see their BSA complaints stats as well.. . or are they not mailing those to everyone they’ve ever heard of?

Clearly the decision to move the Business News back to 6am was a good decision on TVNZ’s part. The “Ho-stache” issue is unlikely to dent viewership: a bit of biff is good on TV as it is on a blog.

from memory 18-45 is the peak ad market & I think you’ll find 3 is doing better there & especially well in Metro areas.

No wonder TV3 is struggling, too many left wing dickwads around anyway, and what do they bring to the news but another bunch of left wing dickwads. Hopeless. Can’t wait for them to go broke. Traitors to free enterprise.

Pagliacco?

The most interesting stat is the number of NZ’s who dont watch – the majority – perhaps an indication of how irrelevant the left wing biased media is becoming.

Stephen – To Wikipedia you should go, hmmm? Much truth you shall find there, yes.

NZ media is pretty banal irregardless of any perceived left or right wing slant but that is most likely a function of our population. I must admit I have always enjoyed Paul Henry – I might not agree with his politics and find him to be very arrogant, smug and exceedingly condescending but its somewhat of a guilty pleasure and he does make me laugh.
When I was living here I gave up on One News when they sacked the mother of the nation, not that 3 News is much better and I always found Campbell Live a much more worthy current affairs show. Traitors to free enterprise that they are.

Thanks Yods. Though more Pagliacci than Pagliacco by the looks.

As much as you and I detest the left wing wankers over at TV3 I am not sure that wishing for their demise is a good thing.
If we are ever to rid ourself of state owned TV and state owned radio then we need these networks to be profitable, hopefully once the economic climate starts to improve a bit we might see somebody decide that they want to balance the way we are feed our news and start producing right wing TV similar to what we see from FOX news.
Of course if TV3 had any brains that is exactly the market they would chase, it could be quite refreshing when you think about it, a change in style from TV3 would mean a whole raft of new presenters and reporters as the current lot are out and out pinko’s.
Personally I would love to turn away from TV1 however the option of TV3 is even less attractive, let the state TV keep peddling the lies and press releases of the Labour party and lets have TV3 provide the balance by moving to the right or at the very least the centre right.

Can’t see what the point of this post is DPF. It certainly doesn’t support the “Private good – Public bad” line we constantly get from the right, as it shows the publicly owned TVNZ well ahead across all new and current affairs.
You suggest that the good TV3 showing on the late news slot might be a legacy of the Belinda Todd Nightine era. I could also suggest that the healthy lead Breakfast has over Sunrise might have something to do with the Mike Hosking era. Surely it can’t have anything to do with that sexist dork Paul Henry.

“Surely it can’t have anything to do with that sexist dork Paul Henry.”
Be interesting to see the market share in a month Toad. I’d predict Paul Henry’s un PC comments will take them through the roof (provided TVNZ keeps him on)

Highly unlikely Sunrise viewers have never seen Paul Henry in action.
