From todays Dom Post article on ‘community education’ cuts:
Alice, a Wellington High School pupil, was among more than 200 people who protested outside Parliament yesterday. She has just finished a course in the sport of fencing and hopes she gets a chance to take more courses.
“I really love swords and the fencing class gave me the chance to pursue my interest. I am so gutted that the funding has been cut.
I have a deal for you, Alice. If you pay for my hobbies, I’ll pay for yours.
Is the Defence Minister Wayne Mapp or Wayne Napp?
The Southland Times has an editorial this morning about Bill English’s housing arrangements, and it includes the defence minister’s — whom it calls Dr Wayne Napp, and Dr Napp. All the way through the editorial. The Southland Times usually puts out a good editorial. But this is odd …
4 million for adult education ans 2.5 million for disabled kids support at school.
Both support social needs.
I bet Key could save that money from the wastage in parliamentary services on MP’s alone.
Lets stop airpoints on our money and free or subsidised airfares after they leave parliament for a start!
NOt1 – the point is that some of us are sick to the back teeth of “celebrities” who might be able to sing or act a bit, thinking that gives their opinion on other matters some extra special relevance…but hey, Greenpeace have provided a helpful website, complete with mugshots, so I can make sure none of my hard-earned goes towards these tossers.
Rakaia – the same might be said for Simon Barnett and his views on the state of the anti-smacking law…. but if you have a message you want to spread, celebrities work (not for me but in theory…). Let them have their day. It’s hardly appropriate the PM uses them as slagging fodder in some speech aimed to a business forum…
Pity you can’t do the same for the “celebrities ” who can neither sing nor act and who inhabit the Parliament – especially ones like Charles Chauvel who can’t even win a seat for themselves on their own merit.
Exactly Rakaia George – the inference is that a “celebrities” (and in this case I use the term loosely) opinion / view is more valued than anybody elses. I find it insulting to my intelligence that Greenpeace think that I will sign up because Kiesha says I should, rather than reseaching the facts and coming up with my own opinion.
The whole “celebrity” culture is yet another nail in the “dumbing down of our society” coffin.
We should be encouraging people to think for themselves and come up with their own opinion – rather than treating some very serious issues as another marketing campaign.
So Siobhan – do you think the PM’s approach was corect then? Rather than saying – this is an important issue, instead of using flashy faces each individual NZer needs to look at the facts and come up with an opinion for themselves., and based on those opinions we can have a sensible debate
I agree with you that this is part of the ‘dumbing down’ trend – hence my comment that using celebrities works in theory and not in practice, for me at least.
But if you think that Key’s approach here did this dumbing down debate any good then I fail to see how myself.
NOt1 – KC-H wrote an open letter to JK as part of the Greenpeace celebrity-fronted spin campaign, so I’d say he’s perfectly within his rights to respond publicly in this manner.
Rakaia – I understand that it is appropriate that he gave a reply. But I expect more of our PM to be honest with you. A 40 something PM responding to a teenager who’s written a letter of serious concern by saying “stick to what you’re good at”. Come on…
NOt1 – “a letter of serious concern” or a cheap publicity stunt on behalf of one of the most intellectually dishonest organisations on the planet? I know which I think it is…
NOt1, I think it is fair enough to respond. These things go both ways when you put yourself into the centre of a major debate.
I agree with you wholeheartedly that we need to see all the facts – and at the moment we has see very few facts apart of the ideology driven publications that suit a specific cause.
“..While generally supporting their work, he is critical of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, a United Nations-supported organization of 2,000 scientists who have been studying climate change since 1989.
He is critical of them for underestimating the severity of climate change.
One example he uses of this failing is the forecast by the IPCC of a range of possibilities as to how much sea level would rise up to 2007.
The forecast for the most amount of rise was less than what actually occurred.
Another major example is what has been happening to Arctic sea ice.
Lovelock points out that “the discrepancy is huge” between what was predicted and what has actually happened; ..
..“if melting continues at this rate the summer Arctic Ocean will be almost ice-free within fifteen years.
The IPCC prediction suggests that this is unlikely before 2050.” (2)
I was glad to see Lovelock’s comparison of our situation today to that of the late ‘30s.
“Most of us think that something unpleasant may soon happen, but we are as confused as we were in 1938 over what form it will take ..
.. and what to do about it.
Our response so far is just like that before the Second World War .. an attempt to appease.
The Kyoto agreement was uncannily like that of Munich..
.. with politicians out to show that they do respond but in reality playing for time [much like what just happened in the House of Representatives ]. . .
.. Battle will soon be joined..
.. and what we now face is far more deadly than any blitzkrieg.
By changing the environment we have unknowingly declared war on Gaia.” (3).”
Three years ago I had a major fight with these dick heads that claimed that “the stench of the mangroves is proof of the life and ….” (on a display board at Okoromai Bay, Whangaparaoa) Obviously these idiots has never been to a real indiginous mangrove and not the invasive foreign infestation we seen in NZ. They do not stink of decay.
But the fight we had was because of the wetland they are reclaiming in Okoromai Bay. It is a great idea. Three years ago the population of birds was fantastic. Remember it is a wetland. It is tidal, so it floods every tide. The pukeko, cranes, and other birds were returning in their thousands.
It has a lovely little raise path that means you can traverse it (EVEN WHEN THE TIDE IS IN). Imagine our surprise when whe found that DOC and the ARC has decided to put up poisoned bait stations along the wetland. Birds were being poisoned by the score.
I phoned up only to be told, that they were poisoning for rabbits. Yep in a tidal wetland. FFS I wondered what sort of animal built those tiny houses on stilts. Now I knew.
The only way we got them to stop was to get a film crew down there (we were filming in the area) and document all the birds being killed.
I asked the typical arrogant wannabe environmentalist duffle-coated person they used as their spokes person, where she thought the poison leached to as the tide came in and out. “Oh she replied, the poison is absolutely safe for the sea and for birds. Not 10 meters away, two pukekos lay dead next to a bait station.
Keisha dont worry about global warming, environmentalists will kill the planet before the rest of us can have a crack.
“A 40 something PM responding to a teenager who’s written a letter of serious concern”
ya make it sound like some schook kid took the time to write a genuine letter…
shes fronting a national advertising campaign (along with some other light weights) and i suspect she didnt even write the letter. just another “actor” jumping on the trendy, lefty, greeny bandwagon
The MP accommodation issue highlights an anomaly in our parliamentary system – why do MPs like Bill English and John Key have electorates? Surely they have enough to do as PM and DPM. And at the same time there are non-minister list MPS without electorates. Doesn’t make sense to me.
I find it insulting to my intelligence that Greenpeace think that I will sign up because Kiesha says I should, rather than reseaching the facts and coming up with my own opinion.
I don’t know… If you believe greenpeace is being disingenuous over climate change, then you might think it was singularly appropriate for them to employ someone who’s job is to make fiction seem plausable (an actor).
In photos of the Australian certificate, it is once again clear that the letters and figures in certain parts have been superimposed over a photo, as they do not run with the creases.
Raises the questions- Why are people apparently forging copies of the Kenyan certificate and why are the Brownshirts in the media proclaiming it as fake when this has clearly yet to be ascertained???
The silly child will regret this and look no further than Michael Campbell after he came out in support of the Klerkingrad regime to see why.
Career absolutey tanked to the point of becoming something of a tragedy figure; a yesterday man; an object of pity; a man driven to humiliate himself whatever the cost; a pointless participant … goodness … why did I drift off and start thinking about Philk Off …
Anyway, back to the point, she is also hampered by double-barrelled name syndrome. The signs are not auspicious. She should stay away from water.
But as for Key even bothering to mention her name … yikes! Why??
Just got my referendum papers in the mail today and I’m living in the UK. Rock on. Time to vote NO and stick it to the socialists. There’s a reason why Helen Clark was booted out on her ass last year and it wasn’t dumb luck.
National Minister Phil Heatley was exposed as receiving over $86,000 a year from entitlements. The taxpayer pays $53,338 for an apartment in Wellington, while he rents out his own private apartment in Wellington to another National MP for $18,000, and owns 2 houses in Whangarei, one of which he rents and receives around $15,000.
National Minister Judith Collins also rents out her own private apartment in Wellington to another National MP, while receiving around a $46,000 taxpayer subsidy.
When questioned which National MP she rented her private apartment to she replied “I won’t breach other people’s privacy”. Yet National Minster Paula Bennett has no problems breaching people’s privacy, a position supported by National PM John Key. However John Key’s had earlier claimed privacy as the reason for not telling the public why he sacked National Minister Richard Worth?
Further Whangarei Mayor Stan Semenoff a well known National supporter not only collects compensation as mayor, but his business interests are subcontractors of council contacts.
How much ratepayer and taxpayer money does the Whangarei Mayor Stan Semenoff really receive?
Terry, the jury is most certainly in and unanimously agreed that this whole accomodation caper is ridiculous and requires change. It looks like that will happen and when we see what the changes are we can rejoin the fray.
As far as Semenoff is concerned, are you suggesting that he doesn’t actually do the work for which he is paid?
Isn’t the question whether he does a proper job, that he gets the work through a transparent and competitive process, and that he isn’t influencing the awarding of council contracts or trading council favours for non-council work? In other words, its about the process and having a process that is sufficiently robust that it can be seen that there is no dirty work at the cross roads. Certainly his circumstances raise a concern about transparency, but it doesn’t automatically follow that there is none and one would hope that in the circumstances, Council is onto this issue and its dealt with. Or do you know something that we don’t?
well there are a number of concerns about council, however to get the information that is at council may cost $5,000 a time…the good old OIA works if you have the money…
Agree that the celeb culture sucks – which is why I find John Key’s “Giggle giggle – I told Keisha off” line embarrassing. Heard Key speak a while back and the whole thing was one name drop after another “Barack said to me… I heard this from Premier Wen… etc.”
Just got my referendum papers in the mail today and I’m living in the UK. Rock on. Time to vote NO and stick it to the socialists. There’s a reason why Helen Clark was booted out on her ass last year and it wasn’t dumb luck.
Um… That question must be vaguer than I thought, I read it as about smacking, not sticking it to socialists.
It’s quite clear really. Each bar on the bar code represents one of these – circle the one of your preference:
Sticking it to socialists
Sticking it to Sue Bradford
Sticking it to Helen Clark
Sticking it to John Key
Sticking it to Greenies
Sticking it to Labour
Sticking it to the nanny state
Sticking it to do-gooders
Sticking it to Barnodos
Sticking it to Save the Children
Sticking it to families commission
Not sticking it to kids
Murray 8:42 am,
“Keisha acts? First I’ve heard of it. I thought she was the poster girl to inspire teens to get up the duff and go on the DPB.”
I recall at the time when she was acting in the film ‘The Nativity Story’, how ironic it was that an unwed mother got knocked-up while playing the Virgin Mary. The following quote from Wikipedia:
‘However the Christian-themed film failed at the box office; one critic noted: “It may have been harmed by the fact that its leading lady, Keisha Castle-Hughes, was found to be unwed and pregnant just as the movie’s publicity campaign began.”‘
Gee, no kidding. A shame they couldn’t have found a real virgin, and one that could act, too.
I think you guys are a bit tough on Keisha’s acting talents – I thought her speech in Whale Rider was very moving, made me cry, but then I am a big sook in movies.
I think you guys are a bit tough on Keisha’s acting talents – I thought her speech in Whale Rider was very moving, made me cry, but then I am a big sook in movies.
Whats that nasty revolting sound, its bill english doing a technicolour yawn vomiting up his legal BUT WRONG RIPOFF,$1000 a week rort , my wife owns the house trust????
no brownie points ENGLISH as if you could have got away with it, YOU WOULD HAVE , SAME OLD FUCKER NATIONAL PARTY (NOTHING CHANGES OVER THE YEARS)same old arseholes, ripping the workers of godsown NZ off.
@ Cerium I believe the spirit of god entered her and got her with child. I also sold the Auckland Harbour Bridge to Joseph, even though it hadn’t been built yet.
You can only try to make it a better place through incremental steps – baby steps if you will. You might be unhappy with the Giveament Joe, but it is better than the last one. They are not perfect, but they are far, far less imperfect than the last one and whatever you think of Key and how he made his money (I do recall some criticism by you on this point Joe) he has brought a totally different perspective to Giveament that is needed and of which this country has have been starved forever. We don’t need this country run by people who have no life and work experience outside parliament and the macrame sciences.
As an example, look what’s happened this week by way of comparison.
Field guilty after being defended to the end by Helen Elizabeth Clark. No comment from Labour.
Mega angst and shouting (especially by you because you do tend to shout a lot Joe, if you don’t mind me saying) over the MP accomodation fiasco shocker. Outcome – a review is announced and English pays some money back. You helped do that Joe, you made a difference. You didn’t change the world but you helped make a difference. So shout less, chill more and keep chipping away!
a fresh worry , chris carter , a small time mp but the biggest spender, does he have a fresh boyfriend in every town in NZ (going by his expenses ( my damn taxes) i think so????? thedavincimode (ps even tvi eyebrows were raised with the cash this mp has spent) but then he has his profile to uphold, and us dumb fucker taxpayers pay and pay
Does anyone else find it ironic that Keisha Castle-Hughes first plays the lead in ‘Whale Rider’, and then five years later, while playing the lead role of the Virgin Mary in ‘The Nativity Story’, herself gets knocked up as an unwed mother?
Sounds like the script in some sick porn movie; ‘Actress while playing the Virgin Mary falls pregnant after riding whale’.
It’s a bad law, it doesn’t stop child abuse, and it’s a nice little way of telling the Greens to fuck off. It’s yet another luddite kneejerk reaction from the party I can’t be fucked to write down.
It’s a flawed law ( more on principle rather than in practice), it was never going to stop child abuse but it could still contribute to less hitting of kids (from the raised awareness it created), and it’s good to keep the Greens having a minor influence.
The only influence the Greens deserve to have is akin to a fart in a closed room. You smell it, look around quickly to see who could have done it, then return to normal.
By the level of votes the Greens get they deserve an influence. An inclusive democracy is better than an elected dictatorship. Especially when it’s not your dictator.
Please do not detract from the quality of my posts by commenting favourably upon them.
FFS. Agreeing with the fuckwit club is forbidden is it? I’ll balance by saying your next post was about as arsehole a post as someone could come up with.
The Greens are the only party in parliament without a single electoral MP. Says a lot about them – the cancer will always be there with their bad legislation and kooky ideas cos there’ll always be 7% of the population who live in mud huts and smoke hemp.

I don’t know any Green voters who don’t make use of all of the technology at their disposal.
If you’re not hopelessly out of touch with reality, what is the point you’re trying to make by describing Green voters as being the opposite of how they are in real life?

Parliamentary services certainly look after themselves in the UK!!

Wonder what one has to do to get a job like this. No competition, no hassle. No Accountability.
Not like NZ PS were on the case, with the proven liar, and conman, Winston Peters’s self drive car.
Wonder what sort of package they get for being average?

It is pretty clear the Australian certificate that some claim is the basis for what they presume to be a forged Kenyan certificate, is itself a fake.
Photos of the Kenyan Certificate are here. It is easy to see that all of the letters and figures roll with the creases in the document.
http://www.wnd.com/index.php?fa=PAGE.view&pageId=105764
In photos of the Australian certificate, it is once again clear that the letters and figures in certain parts have been superimposed over a photo, as they do not run with the creases.
http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/2308296/posts
Raises the questions- Why are people apparently forging copies of the Kenyan certificate and why are the Brownshirts in the media proclaiming it as fake when this has clearly yet to be ascertained???

Good call paradigm – silly me.
August 5th, 2009 at 1:12 pm
The silly child will regret this and look no further than Michael Campbell after he came out in support of the Klerkingrad regime to see why.
Career absolutey tanked to the point of becoming something of a tragedy figure; a yesterday man; an object of pity; a man driven to humiliate himself whatever the cost; a pointless participant … goodness … why did I drift off and start thinking about Philk Off …
Anyway, back to the point, she is also hampered by double-barrelled name syndrome. The signs are not auspicious. She should stay away from water.
But as for Key even bothering to mention her name … yikes! Why??
August 5th, 2009 at 1:19 pm
Just got my referendum papers in the mail today and I’m living in the UK. Rock on. Time to vote NO and stick it to the socialists. There’s a reason why Helen Clark was booted out on her ass last year and it wasn’t dumb luck.

How to make money in a recession
August 5th, 2009 at 2:04 pm

What is wrong with Pooman?
A sad state of affairs when the country can’t even have a laugh.

Or do you know something that we don’t?
well there are a number of concerns about council, however to get the information that is at council may cost $5,000 a time…the good old OIA works if you have the money…

“PM tells Keisha: Stick to acting”
Agree that the celeb culture sucks – which is why I find John Key’s “Giggle giggle – I told Keisha off” line embarrassing. Heard Key speak a while back and the whole thing was one name drop after another “Barack said to me… I heard this from Premier Wen… etc.”
Sam tells PM: Stick to Forex Trading
August 5th, 2009 at 3:06 pm
Um… That question must be vaguer than I thought, I read it as about smacking, not sticking it to socialists.
August 5th, 2009 at 3:32 pm
It’s quite clear really. Each bar on the bar code represents one of these – circle the one of your preference:
Sticking it to socialists
Sticking it to Sue Bradford
Sticking it to Helen Clark
Sticking it to John Key
Sticking it to Greenies
Sticking it to Labour
Sticking it to the nanny state
Sticking it to do-gooders
Sticking it to Barnodos
Sticking it to Save the Children
Sticking it to families commission
Not sticking it to kids

Murray 8:42 am,
“Keisha acts? First I’ve heard of it. I thought she was the poster girl to inspire teens to get up the duff and go on the DPB.”
I recall at the time when she was acting in the film ‘The Nativity Story’, how ironic it was that an unwed mother got knocked-up while playing the Virgin Mary. The following quote from Wikipedia:
‘However the Christian-themed film failed at the box office; one critic noted: “It may have been harmed by the fact that its leading lady, Keisha Castle-Hughes, was found to be unwed and pregnant just as the movie’s publicity campaign began.”‘
Gee, no kidding. A shame they couldn’t have found a real virgin, and one that could act, too.
August 5th, 2009 at 4:43 pm
You guys are awesome.
August 5th, 2009 at 4:47 pm
how ironic it was that an unwed mother got knocked-up while playing the Virgin Mary
Isn’t that that the second time that’s happened?
August 5th, 2009 at 4:48 pm
@ bobux yeah I listend to one on the radio – she took ball room dancing classes at our expense because “they helped her socialise”
August 5th, 2009 at 4:48 pm
I think you guys are a bit tough on Keisha’s acting talents – I thought her speech in Whale Rider was very moving, made me cry, but then I am a big sook in movies.
August 5th, 2009 at 4:50 pm
@ Cerium Mary was married to Joseph so she wasn’t technically unwed, he just wasn’t the father.
Or are you referring to Anakin Skywalker’s mom who was impregnated by the Force?
August 5th, 2009 at 5:01 pm
Shh. You’ll stop them from being so classy.
So classy.
August 5th, 2009 at 5:01 pm

August 5th, 2009 at 5:11 pm
“Mary was married to Joseph so she wasn’t technically unwed, he just wasn’t the father.”
The ultimate adulterer – it wasn’t the milkman was it?
August 5th, 2009 at 5:15 pm
@ Cerium I believe the spirit of god entered her and got her with child. I also sold the Auckland Harbour Bridge to Joseph, even though it hadn’t been built yet.
August 5th, 2009 at 5:18 pm
Anyone else wondering if those freed journalists travelling back to the US on a private plane with Bill Clinton are at any…errr….risk?

KiwiGreg – FAA rules are no smoking on planes (nice, but no cigar
)
August 5th, 2009 at 5:57 pm
Cerium 4:47 pm,
Who was the other “unwed mother [that] got knocked-up while playing the Virgin Mary”?
Can’t think of any? Was she also a Kiwi actress?
I just thought of a good joke [truly]:
How do you prevent your virgin daughter from getting pregnant?
Never let her ride a whale.
August 5th, 2009 at 6:04 pm
You cannot change the world Joe.
August 5th, 2009 at 6:13 pm

Does anyone else find it ironic that Keisha Castle-Hughes first plays the lead in ‘Whale Rider’, and then five years later, while playing the lead role of the Virgin Mary in ‘The Nativity Story’, herself gets knocked up as an unwed mother?
Sounds like the script in some sick porn movie; ‘Actress while playing the Virgin Mary falls pregnant after riding whale’.
August 5th, 2009 at 6:37 pm
thedavincimode at 6:04 pm – excellent post
August 5th, 2009 at 7:12 pm
It’s a bad law, it doesn’t stop child abuse, and it’s a nice little way of telling the Greens to fuck off. It’s yet another luddite kneejerk reaction from the party I can’t be fucked to write down.
Is that so bad, Delirium?
August 5th, 2009 at 7:30 pm
It’s a flawed law ( more on principle rather than in practice), it was never going to stop child abuse but it could still contribute to less hitting of kids (from the raised awareness it created), and it’s good to keep the Greens having a minor influence.
Is that so bad?
August 5th, 2009 at 7:43 pm
Operative word being “could”.
The only influence the Greens deserve to have is akin to a fart in a closed room. You smell it, look around quickly to see who could have done it, then return to normal.
August 5th, 2009 at 7:45 pm

By the level of votes the Greens get they deserve an influence. An inclusive democracy is better than an elected dictatorship. Especially when it’s not your dictator.

FFS. Agreeing with the fuckwit club is forbidden is it? I’ll balance by saying your next post was about as arsehole a post as someone could come up with.
August 5th, 2009 at 7:52 pm
perfect pitch Joe. I see you are already more chilled.
August 5th, 2009 at 8:04 pm
Operative word being “could”.
That depends on what parents want to take out of it. Incremental steps in the right direction would be a good thing.
August 5th, 2009 at 8:04 pm
you are too kind you silver tongued devil you
August 5th, 2009 at 8:16 pm
davincimode @7.45. that made my wine come out my nostrils. gee thanks

Hurf, the Big Magpie does the fart jokes. He’s claimed it as his own territory – just like the couch.
And after this flurry of activity, I think I need a rest.
Drinkies?
August 5th, 2009 at 8:26 pm
The Greens are the only party in parliament without a single electoral MP. Says a lot about them – the cancer will always be there with their bad legislation and kooky ideas cos there’ll always be 7% of the population who live in mud huts and smoke hemp.
August 5th, 2009 at 10:45 pm
I don’t know any Green voters who don’t make use of all of the technology at their disposal.
If you’re not hopelessly out of touch with reality, what is the point you’re trying to make by describing Green voters as being the opposite of how they are in real life?
August 5th, 2009 at 10:59 pm
I don’t know any Green voters who don’t make use of all of the technology at their disposal.
Yeah, scythes can be very effective on the marijuana field deep in the Coromandel.
August 6th, 2009 at 8:38 am
7% of the population shouldn’t count? And 1% should?
August 6th, 2009 at 8:49 am
Will Chris Carter ‘surface” today?, and why is Darren ginga Hughes taking the hits for Carter?
Is Carter off limits because he is gay?
