Standby Student Fares

August 28th, 2009 at 10:00 am by David Farrar

NZPA report:

Otago University students will soon be able to travel standby from Dunedin on Air New Zealand.

The Otago Daily Times reported the airline would next month introduce $39 standby fares for students.

Oh this brings back memories. When I was an Otago student, they also had very cheap standby fares for students. The problem was they were standby. I once spent two days and nights at Christchurch Airport, waiting for a standby fare to complete the journey home.

Oh the joys of being a poor student.

I remember when doing my degree up at Auckland Uni [1982-84] that Air NZ would offer student standby for half the normal fare. Thus from Auckland to Wellington it only cost me $50. Even back then this was a pretty good price. As I boarded with a family the cost of the airfare was more than offset by my savings on board.

Unlike DPF I seldom ever waited more than an hour before an available flight opened up.
I think two hours was my longest wait.
Must have been my good looks and charm.

    The good old days.

Two days and a night? You should have hitched.

Standby dried up when the planes got full. Now they are half-empty again. Still, great to see. Reminds me of the cultural revolution, when Mao urged young people to get out and travel the country.

Standby worked well as long as you didn’t have to get somewhere by a specific time. Maybe I was lucky – or never flying a popular route at peak times – because I never missed the flight I wanted.

There are several shuttle companies offering bus/minibus seats Christchurch to Dunedin. Takes about 5 hours, but less than an airfare usually and you can book a time in advance. Overland is an option in some cases if you do not want to spend 2 days stuck in an airport!

Ansett student fares were even better – they had a limited number you could actually book!
