Will the proposed McKenzie Country ‘stall-cow’ farms, or any new farming initiative for that matter, be required to conform to Kyoto/Copenhagen emission restraints or will they, because they are farming operations be exempt while everything else complies?
Like, will we be further subsidising cheese which already we can’t afford?

Cheese production leads to toxic GHG emissions, Yvette, and New Zealand has to pull its weight in this planet saving business.

I’m afraid if we will just have to accept that cheese by necessity will no longer be a staple of kids school lunches may I suggest healthy low fat tofu as a suitable replacement. Its a win win, not only will you be doing your bit for the planet but tofu is so low in calories that you will be doing your bit to fight the obesity epidemic.

Last time a Wanaka retailer was in court for opening at Easter the judge said the law was a nonsense.

MPs lost he chance to sort out the nonsense last night.

Any law which is regularly and openly flouted is a bad law. Todd McLay’s bill wouldn’t have unleashed commercial mayhem, it would simply have given local authorities the chance to address local problems.

It’ll be very interesting to see what Fonterra do regarding these indoor dairy farms.

They’ve said they fear the detrimental effect on the image of New Zealand’s dairying image. I’ll take their word for it, as they would know. Perception and reality are different things and markets are fickle. NZ butter has already been subject to negative (and erroneous) press on food-miles/energy-intensity in the UK.

I suppose Fonterra could refuse to take the milk. Does anyone know where these farms can send their milk?

I love the current recession. I had a salary rise from $82K to $90K and I have just recieved a $2500 bonus to boot. Our mortgage has gone from $200K to $100K due to a lump sum payment and low interest rates. XMAS shopping will be cheaper as well, esp. on Boxing Day and the holiday is cheaper as motels are not charging as much as previous years.

Who else has had a good 2009 financially? I am sure I am not the only one.

Not I sadly. Back in April IRD ‘found’ an error (they claim mine, I claim theirs) from my 2004 taxation so I’ve been hit with a massive back tax bill + interest. Locked in battle over that. I had income generating work up until June, but little since. But our son who has been overseas all year is back next week… so bugger the financial grumps. He’s more valuable!

Just like to kinow who deserted ships in each of the political parties in the Shopping Hours debate.
Did any National MP defect blowing any case of freedom of choice. Once again, people don’t have to shop on those days.
I watched some of the debate and saw the hypocrisy of Lynne Pillay, an ex-union lackey, praising Steve Chadwick for her support of the bill and then lambasting it for its lack of worker protection.
This fiasco just continues to make the law an ass.

One observable result of 24 hour 7 day shopping is the reduced ability of people to survive a natural disaster.

Back in the days of one late night shopping and everything closing at 5 on Friday everyone was conditioned to shop for a weeks supplies with top ups of bread and milk. These days the supermarkets are packed the day before and the day after a holiday by thousands of logisitcally challenged retail slaves buying enough food for the next 12 hours only.

God help them when the big cuts them off for four or five days.

So today messys TEW, HOBBS and co can destroy the legacy of what has been one of the best NPCs in recent times with another tinkering at the margins.
The edge that coming and going ABs, lesser unions proving themselves against vaunted (often undeserved) teams, the opportunities offered to virtual unknown players, and upset results , brought to the game this year, was if nothing else, refreshing, in a word.
Instead of talking about the financial viability of the 14 team comp why not try and work out why Hawkes Bay could fill their admittedly smaller stadium for a round robin game and Canterbury couldn’t raise a halfway decent turnout for the final. No it wasn’t even halfway decent.
A few pointers
1 treat the loyal fans as an asset, not a resource and treat the casuals as a bonus
2 overcome the sponsership problem with the beer, it is not often that a majority will want the one product. Lion at one end NZB at the other and some real brewers at half way, dare I say it even consider a rotation policy
2a food concessions likewise.
3 Most of the base fans you are looking for would rather see a curtain raiser of Bs Or College 1sts than the plastic crap on offer. Even a couple of JAB teams club or Rep.
4 Look to afternoon rugby as a default position and explain to those that want night rugby that the “product” will be more marketable as a spectacle
5 Give serious consideration to delaying the TV coverage of the big games S14,NPC not necessarily Tests. (I accept that regional blackout is not a go)
6 Accept and acknowledge that the management of the last British and Irish Lions ticketing was a P R disaster and even an apology.(its fashionable you know) could have a good outcome.
As to how you get the thousands (I thought it was hundreds) of us who took the money we used to invest in the season ticket and built a home entertainment system in the warmth of our lounge, provided the beer we enjoy and food that was great and not life threatening, back, I do not know but it will require more than the begging phone calls that the CRU tried when we all walked away 4 years ago.
ps I still have my love of the game, a little bit of Lancaster Park in my lawn, my red and black eye patch a desire to bring back rucking (now theres a thought) and to Mrs G D’s eternal disappointment (yes she had her season ticket too), a passion for rugby that all too often interferes with what she considers important.

It’s not often I have anything good to say about the politicians in my homeland, but the Irish Government’s just-released “punishing” budget actually has some welcome measures. Including:

– Salary of Taoiseach (Prime Minister) to be reduced by 20 per cent, salaries of Ministers to be reduced by 15 per cent

The pay of public servants will be reduced with effect from 1 January 2010 as follows:
– A reduction of 5 pc on the first €30,000 of salary;
– A reduction of 7.5 pc on the next €40,000 of salary; and
– A reduction of 10 pc on the next €55,000 of salary
– This will include the pay of hospital consultants
– Minimum pension age for new public servants is 66
– Review of public service pensions to be carried out

Social Welfare payments:
– Job-Seekers Allowance: New applicant rates for those 20-21 years of age will be reduced to €100 per week and those of 22-24 years of age to €150 per week
– The State pension remains unchanged
– An efficiency report of Local Authorities is to be carried out
– Child Benefit rates, lower and higher will be reduced by €16 per month, bringing these rates to €150 and €187 per month respectively.

VAT and Excise changes:
The reductions will be as follows:
– 12 cent per pint of beer and cider
– 14 cent per half glass of spirits
– 60 cent per standard bottle of wine
– If the reduction is not passed on the consumer it will be reversed
– 0.5% increase on VAT imposed in October 2008 has been reversed

I love the fact that unless the liquor industry passes on tax savings to the consumer then the cuts will be reversed. I love it almost as much as the thought of ministers taking a pay cut.

Thanks, I don’t know much about what is down there. Still 18,000 cows is a lot of milk and I imagine these other processors might see the marketing angle much the same as Fonterra?

It’s amazing the products that have Fonterra written on them. Just today noticed that frozen croissants come from a Fonterra-owned company in Wiri.

A noted climatologist, identified as a skeptic for many years, published an open letter to his fellow climatologists, taking the climate research community to task for behavior that he described as a violation of the public trust, and even suggesting temporarily suspending the UN Intergovernmental Panel for Climate Change (IPCC). What a good idea!

Dr. Petr Chylek, Remote Sensing Team Leader, Space and Remote Sensing Group, Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL), first sent his letter on Saturday (December 5) to 100 prominent climatologists. He afterward named James Hansen of NASA, Steve Schneider[*], and Phil Jones of the East Anglia Climatic Research Unit (CRU) among those to whom he had sent his letter. On Monday (December 7), he sent his letter to four separate addresses at LANL. The letter can be seen here.

This open letter concludes:

“The damage has been done. The public trust in climate science has been eroded. At least a part of the IPCC 2007 report has been put in question. We cannot blame it on a few irresponsible individuals. The entire esteemed climate research community has to take responsibility. Yes, there always will be a few deniers and obstructionists.

So what comes next? Let us stop making unjustified claims and exaggerated projections about the future even if the editors of some eminent journals are just waiting to publish them. Let us admit that our understanding of the climate is less perfect than we have tried to make the public believe. Let us drastically modify or temporarily discontinue the IPCC. Let us get back to work.

Let us encourage students to think their own thoughts instead of forcing them to parrot the IPCC conclusions. Let us open the doors of universities, of NCAR, NASA and other research institutions (and funding agencies) to faculty members and researchers who might disagree with the current paradigm of carbon dioxide. Only open discussion and intense searching of all possibilities will let us regain the public’s trust and move forward.”

Sounds sensible to me.

United Nations backtracks on Climategate email scandal, will not investigate.

Pachauri, the head of the IPCC (and a locomotive engineer), has said that his only concern was finding out who was behind the ‘leak’, not if there are any problems with the science behind the manmade climate change theory or the scientists that formulated it.

Pachauri said, “The persons who have worked on this report, and those who unfortunately have been victims of this terrible and illegal act, are outstanding scientists, and have contributed enormously over the 20, 21 years of the existence of the IPCC.”.

IMO they are outstanding frauds who have unquestioningly done the UN’s bidding and, in the process, tarnished the reputation of thousands of principled scientists.

I’m annoyed about the Danish Text leak. When you consider the awful, shitty, stupid things this conference could come up, the text is a comparatively alright thing – and the fucking guilt-ridden Guardian goes and ruins it. Fuck the Guardian.

I ain’t crying Hurf – the talks are still ongoing, the work is still to be done. If this leak was designed as an attempt to derail talks, then the opposite effect has become true. Anyway, it’s not like the developing countries wouldn’t have had input or consultation from the Danes.

The text does have some positive points – it does work toward freeing up the funding channels for developing countries. Otherwise, it’s just another symptom of why things will be difficult to change: it’s difficult to get the richest countries to give up more or skew policy toward development of the poorer countries.

Yes, because that’s the easiest way to do it. Convince the world there’s a massive climate disaster heading for it, and then write draft policies skewed toward the richer countries in order to funnel money into poor countries because… well, just because.

No, because Geldof is the biggest prick out of the Counties since… well, ever. Always has been, always will be. Saved millions of fucking lives through doing fuck all about the genocide in Sudan, aided Africa back to self-sufficiency by buying up food aid through federal agriculture support programs and then dumping it on them, regardless of whether or not it’s any good. Same with medicines: drop tax relief for companies who give aid to Africa, and then dump a load of shit on them they can’t use.

Uh, help for Africa to help others. I don’t know about you, but I don’t really think that dumping a bunch of crap on Africa by merit of tax breaks is the road to self-sufficiency. And I don’t really think it should still be happening.

What were the clowns that organised the Carbonhargen wank fest thinking of. I would have thought that anyone claiming the world is heating up and we must do something about it would have picked a venue that made the participants break out in a sweat. The temperature at Carbonhargen is about 4 or 5 degrees at the moment, with temperatures to drop further later on. Meanwhile Nth America is covered with snow and ice and most of the northern hemisphere is enjoying an early winter. Maybe, just maybe God is trying to tell them something or more likely they really are thick bastards, fancy calling a conference on global warming in the middle of winter.

Yeah – well having read his autobiography years ago I can’t help agreeing. For all the massive wankfest that Live Aid was it sure as hell did not create a permanent solution.

You might be surprised at the number of your points I agree with – having advised Andrei earlier in the day that sarcasm does not work on blogs I just assumed that you were following his approach.
