Hodgson to retire

June 5th, 2010 at 10:55 am by David Farrar

I tweeted yesterday that I had heard a rumour that will announce his retirement this weekend, and the ODT confirms he has.

No doubt he will spend his last 18 months in Parliament trying to dig up H Fee Mark III on John Key, after the failure of H Fee Mark I and H Fee Mark II.

Asked if he thought he would be offered board appointments by Prime Minister John Key, Mr Hodgson said “No way”.

Thank God. Cullen’s appointment was bad enough.

I expect will get the nomination for . Despite being the MP for Otago for three brief years, he has always lived in Dunedin. Parker is ten years younger than Hodgson, and has performed pretty well in Opposition. In fact he might be a future Finance Minister in a -led Government.

Good Riddance, the stupid git (vet) is finally going –

What has he ever contributed to NZ politics but bitter and twisted comments, like so many of his Labour contemporaries some still still still still around.

Good for Labour though to get rid of him as he has continually embarrased both himself and his party.

What before he’s shoved… he’s not so blind he can not see the writing on the wall… but I would have like to see him face the music of his passed .. and be cut to ribbons all the same.

No doubt why he’s making noises now… is because he’s leaving… which say’s alot about the rest of the gutless Labour oldguard in his party that will hide behind him now.. and then later stab him in the back and blaming him… when it all turns to shit… when it is them that need to go as well.

Doesn’t the Labour Party read their own supporters opinions and advice… get rid of the oldguard and start a fresh.

Yes indeed, RKB. A few more resignations and they might stand a chance but not before.

I wonder whether Key’s support for Helen’s job in the UN, and Cullen’s job at Kiwibank are not good ways to get rid of the old Labour powerhouse MPs, who the media would have still gone to for comment on Key’s government and policies. With Cullen on the Kiwibank (i.e. government) payroll he is likely to keep his trap shut out of “professionalism”. All Key then has to deal with is Goff as the official heckler – a walk in the park. It’s a tidy piece of not-quite-corruption really. Nice sunset job with all the perks if you keep your thoughts to yourself.

Hopefully this is the start of a proper clearout. New Zealand needs a genuine alternative for governance in Parliament if government is to be accountable, and that goes regardless as to which party is, or which parties are, holding power.

“I expect David Parker will get the nomination for Dunedin North.”

He’d need to show a lot more enthusiasm for winning and holding the seat than he did for Otago and Waitaki – he conceded the latter to Jacqui Dean at a public meeting a couple of weeks BEFORE the last election.

How the fuck could they have ever voted for a retard like Gollum?

Now they get to have another retard David Parker.

Glad I don’t live (exist) in Dunedin North, I would shoot myself!

Of course redbaiter, the towering intellects thrown up by Auckland voters would include “honest” Phil Field, Judith Tizzard, Chris “both feet in the trough Carter, the one and the one and only Phill “slap it on the bill” Goff. Then there was the tremendous donation of Jim ” can’t get out of the trough just yet” Anderton who came to Sydenham, another electorate that would vote for a pumkin on a peg if it was endorsed by the labour party and now wants to round out a selfless career of service by inflicting himself on our city as Mayor. If that should happen and well it might as Kerry “right’ Burke is not going to run but will attempt to get on council and I presume that is on the understanding he will get Jimbo’s support as deputy Mayor.
It will all end in tears when the whole thing blows up as everything Dinosaur Anderton leads turns to poop and fueled by the ego of Burke that will be sooner rather than later.
Then Rodney can come and reorganise local govt with a unitary authority and remove water planning to a seperate statuary entity that cannot be captured by populist politicians supported by the ignorant of the electorate.

” Former Labour cabinet minister and current MP for Dunedin North, Pete Hodgson, is to retire from politics at the next election.

The announcement opens the way for a spirited contest for one of New Zealand’s safest Labour-held seats.

Mr Hodgson, 59, told the Otago Daily Times that it was time for him to move on while he was still young enough to contemplate a post-political life.

“I have mixed feelings. I love my job but it is important to me to leave politics on my own terms.”

Mr Hodgson announced the decision to his electorate committee last night. ”

When did looking like Gollum equate to “young” ?

When did making an utter prick of your self equate to “my own terms” ?

Yeah it’s a bit churlish of me but I ask the same of Hodgson as I asked of Bradford: show me hard data that demonstrates accomplishments you’ve personally driven that have improved people’s lives.

Otherwise what the fuck have we been paying for, all these years and for the next 30, into YOUR comfortable retirement. What have you given US that makes you worth that, is a valid question.

Sadly some politicians look to me a bit like Oliver Twist when rhetorically I ask that of their careers, and some others look a bit like Wurzel Gummage. Unfortunately Hodgson is not a giant in the field, shall I say. He doesn’t make the Hall of Fame. Poor bastard.

The very EX Prime Mentalist Brown when in No11, and later in higher office in No 10. Along with all the other

members of the Cabal of Scottish Raj, managed to destroy Centuries of hard work, entrepreneurial activity, the slickest drug running

organisation ever seen in History. Epitomised by the HM Government of our Queen Elizabeth II.

In 10 years they systemically destroyed the nation of England and carried the proceeds North of the Border. Bribes given to the Dogmatics in NI, and the charming and genteel Welsh. The rest of the money was sent straight to the French via the EU.

The’ Auld Alliance’ is alive and well.

No wonder ZaNuLabours first Parliamentary act was to abolish all forms of Treason from the Statute Books.

BTW, all the Overseas Colonies of France have special terms, and are directly subsidised by the EU.

So, all those French owned territories get a per capita allowance as a direct subsidy.

Nice work if you can get it.

    “Whats with Dunedin North people?”

    Scottish descent.

    ?? MacHodgson? MacParker?

What proportion in the electorate are of predominately Scottish descent? What does that matter in the 21st century anyway? Compared to NZ as a whole the most significant thing about descent stats in Dunedin is the low proportion of Maori and PI, otherwise it’s a wide mix. The last mayors have hardly been Scottish stalwarts – Chinese and Indian.

Yeah, I know it was just an excuse to try and make some over-generalised unrelated political point about somewhere on the other side of the world.

Anyway, it’s good to see Hodgson stepping aside, but it would be a shame to see a simple Parker replacement, better if they made a bold choice. If it goes down the predictable path it’s a great opportunity for a strong Independent candidate to shake up the seat. Labour take both Dunedin seats too much for granted.
