Football World Cup Final thread

I am backing the Netherlands, but expecting Spain to win.
UPDATE: Spain wins 1-0 with two minutes left of extra time. They started the tournament as favourites so the bookies will not be as happy as the Spanish.
UPDATE2: This also means that the All Whites can take some pride in being the only team in the World Cup that never lost a game.

I’m quite neutral on this result, both are deserving of their place in the final, may the best team win (hopefully not from a penalty shootout).

The ref is going card crazy early….but some very poor tackles going in too.

A messy game, and the experience isn’t helped by the commentary, I’m interested in the game, not an entire history of every soccer game and player, that is more over the top than the ball.

Spain vs Holland. The story of this world cup is how the All White juggernaut destroyed all teams and Spain & Holland are in finals because they didn’t play the All Whites.

@ Bearhunter – I doubt that any speaker of Spanish will care one iota about the quality of the match. At the end of the day, all that counts is that the Spanish team is the European AND World Champion.

IV2: I know, depressing ain’t it? I find it annoying because the rest of the competition was quite entertaining, upsets everywhere and some sublime football, only for it to be ruined for all but the 46million Spaniards watching by a final containing the most cynical team since the Italians of the 80s.

All in all I think it has been a fantastic world cup. I was supporting the Netherlands so a bit disappointed for them, but for me the drama over the past few weeks has been awesome, and something at a level that is not the case for any other sport.
I agree with Pete George in one respect – the commentary has been atrocious – bordering on the imbecilic. The guy simply tells us over and over again the most mundane, irrelevant, uninteresting details about the players, like ‘Puyol is an extremely intelligent fellow – he likes yoga” …huh???
The dude also stated the obvious over and over again.
Where were the great commentators of before like Brian Moore and John Motson?

Excellent World Cup, but – statistics, statistics blah blah.
The All Whites, only undefeated team at the World Cup, brilliant. Statistics, the All Whites, least number of shots in the tournament, least number of passes in the tournament, well done the All Whites but let’s keep it in perspective eh! Gotta hate those statistics!

All Whites – unbeaten in World Cup finals matches since 1982. No other finalists come within 28 years of us.
Now if we can just rejig the rules to give ‘not losing’ a higher status than winning.
