“We’ve got a pretty good leader at the moment”

July 20th, 2010 at 1:00 pm by David Farrar

The Stuff version of the Andrew Little article didn’t have as much detail as the Daily News version. I love this response to a question on whether he seeks to become Labour Party Leader:

We’ve got a pretty good leader at the moment …

That quote is so good, I’m adding it to my quotes file. I’m not sure what I find more amusing the description of the current leader as “pretty good” or the “at the moment”.

Your attempt at political amusement baffles me.

May I say, as someone from right of center, that I agree with Andrew, and sincerely hope that Phil Goff remains Labour’s leader for at least the next 10 years.

    Oh FFS.

This is an understatement. New Zealanders do this all the time. John Key does it all the time. This signifies absolutely nothing.

Thanks Andrew (and Graeme, for backing it up).

The next time I’m asked whether I’ll still respect her in the morning, I have the perfect reply: “You’re pretty good wife material at the moment”.

It’s just the Kiwi love of understatement, doncha know :-D

All politicians below the leader say things like that. If he said he wanted to be leader he would be slipped out the back door very quickly.

About the best response anyone could make to that sort of question. Of course he would like to be leader. Most MPs would. If he said no, he would a) not be believed, and b) look like a fink later when his ambitions were revealed.

On the other hand he can’t say yes (the truth) or he would look disloyal and ambitious (not the Kiwi way).

So he has to sidestep the question just as dozens of other ambitious MPs have had to over the years when faced with the same question. Little’s response is one of the best.

I dont think Andrews got a hope in hell of being the next leader.

    1. He aint gay

    2. He aint a wimmin

    3. He aint from the foaming left of the party.

Andrew 2, now 3 jobs Little is going to go for the top job (party Leader and PM) within the next 2-3 years .. I have said it all along. He is a driven person who would not want to be a basic MP, especially an opposition one. The saying “you can smell the ambition on his breath” was made for him.

    1. He aint gay”

Perhaps he should just have said: “We’ve got a pretty leader at the moment …”

That would have upped his chances for Labour leadership by a huge margin. :)

Absolutely no one in Liarbour wants to lead.

Absolutely no Liarbour candidate has confidence in a Liarbour win this election.

Absolutely no Liarbour candidate wants there throat cut by their party after a very risky campaign and loss.

Goff could well stay at the helm till his retirement. That’s not an official prediction, but a safe projection.
