[DPF: Update: WHO states:

Total scores of 8 or more are recommended as indicators of hazardous and
harmful alcohol use, as well as possible alcohol dependence.

This is how Alcohol Action come up with their stat that 700,000 NZers are problem drinkers.  But it is even worse than that:

In general, a score of 1 or more on Question 2 or Question 3 indicates consumption at a hazardous level.

So if you have ever had more than two standard drinks in a session, this indicates hazardous consumption!]

I binge drink (technically as I have a dozen beers) on a Saturday night, but go to bed, sleep in and am fine… And I go to a lot of events (if they are on) like your gallery openings etc during the week and have a few glases of wine now and then… Like tonight am popping into Exhibitions on Featherston St on way home as haven’t been there for a while and I like Ron’s (owner) taste in art, would that make me an alchyhollicc

I’ve got room for improvement also, scored a 0 on 4, 5, 6 and 10. Mainly because 5: I’m a BA student, nothing is ever expected of me. 6: There’s never any alcohol left after a heavy drinking session to have a morning drink, or it’s the next afternoon by the time we stop. 10: My relatives and friends all drink just as much.

Trust me, you don’t want a BA. You may have done more work, but at least there’s jobs for you when you’re done. A BA is worthless now, which I only found out halfway through my last (this) year.

10; 8 of them in the first three questions. I’m assuming a ‘drink’ is a standard unit, so a bottle of Steinie and a moderate glass of wine are 3 – 4 units.

So… if every other weeknight, once I’ve finished all the housework, got the kids to bed, and sat my arse down at 9:30 I have one beer and one wine; and if at the weekends I have a bottle of wine one of the two evenings; then I have a problem. Don’t think so.

Question 5 is great. “How often during the last year have you failed to do what was normally expected from you because of drinking?” There’s a mate of mine that’s big into his rugby and for 20 years he hasn’t drunk on a Friday night during the season, and makes up for it with a bender Sat evening and all day Sunday. His work never expects to see him on Monday until mid afternoon, so he scores 0. Heh heh.

I think my score is one currently. I’m not in practice at drinking as I’ve had babies the last few years.
This summer my score might increase, probably up to a 3. I’m a drinker at barbeques. Don’t drink much at home and don’t go to parties and restaurants much.

The last drink I had was a small glass of white wine at a playcentre family night about a month ago.

Who made up the Quiz, its badly worded. Perhaps they should write referendum questions.

    1. How often do you have a drink containing alcohol?
    OK

    2. How many drinks containing alcohol do you have on a typical day when you are drinking?
    OK

    3. How often do you have six or more drinks on one occasion?
What kind of drinks? No mention of alcohol, why assume that. Water is a drink.

    4. How often during the last year have you found that you were not able to stop drinking once you had started?
I always stop drinking eventually. I fact I stop drinking while I open the next bottle.

    5. How often during the last year have you failed to do what was normally expected from you because of drinking?
My wife always nags me that I’m making us late leaving the house because I grab a drink just before I leave.

    6. How often during the last year have you needed a first drink in the morning to get yourself going after a heavy drinking session?
I always seem to need a drink in the morning, I guess its the 8 hours that I have been without making me thirsty.

    7. How often during the last year have you had a feeling of guilt or remorse after drinking?
I drank the last of the kids chocolate milk from the fridge yesterday and felt a little guilty.

    8. How often during the last year have you been unable to remember what happened the night before because you had been drinking?
I can never remember the night before, but I thought that was age. I will try and stop having a glass of milk before bed to see if my memory improves.

    9. Have you or someone else been injured as a result of your drinking?
Given the anti smacking laws, I guess I injured one of my kids when I threw my glass of water over him when he was having a wobbly.

    10. Has a relative or friend or a doctor or another health worker been concerned about your drinking or suggested you cut down?
Yes my wife says I drink too much Fizzy lolly water.

So I got a score in the 30′s because the questions were ambiguous and assumed an Alcohol relationship.

I’m pissed anyway so stuff the silly test. Im gunna go beat the wife so she can yell at me about my drinking AGAIN. Luckily I won’t remember in the morning. I’ll have a couple when I wake up to get rid of the hangover else i’ll call in sick to nurse the hangover, then I’ll go to the liquor store and get a couple of dozen for tomorrow night with the boys.

    Size does matter

    [DPF: Update: WHO states:
    ...
In general, a score of 1 or more on Question 2 or Question 3 indicates consumption at a hazardous level.

So if you have ever had more than two standard drinks in a session, this indicates hazardous consumption!]

No. You’ve misread it. If you’ve ever had six or more drinks on one occasion this indicated hazardous consumption. Only if you typically drink 3 or more drinks (not ‘have ever’) do they claim you’re in danger.

9 because of a score of 4 on the last question, due to my wife’s beleif that I have a drinking problem.

This beleif is due primarily to events in her past related to alcohol abuse, events that occured before I even met her.

That last question is about as biased and loaded as you can get, and has no relation to any actual alchol consupmtion, but only to others perception of it.

Today is Friday, since Sunday morning I have consumed two small bottles of beer.

(although to be honest, Friday night and Saturday I was on a rugby trip, consumption affected accordingly, but I was the designated van driver on Saturday, and only had my first beer at 8.00 that night!)

    7. One away from being a “harmful drinker”, on the basis that I go out Fridays and Saturdays, and to Backbenches on Wednesday, and that once I’ve had a bit of a fuzzy memory. So even though I got 0 for causing myself or others any harm I’m still apparently relatively harmful?

    Silly test.

    Some context…
The test is the AUDIT score for alcohol consumption. It’s used as a small set of question in big population surveys to get at population trends – it’s not meant to be a diagnostic tool.
(Statistical tools in health are usually “validated” in the sense that they have been tested to make sure that they are *generally* a good match to the thing they are trying to measure.)

The survey doesn’t specifically mention drink size because it’s used world wide and so local communities show photos of how much a standard drink is according to local context.

And harmful drinking is not just the stuff than happens around the time you drink, it also counts the long term effects on the liver and brain.

    3. But apparently (as one of these was scored at Question 2), I have a hazardous level of consumption.

So, having 3 glasses over the course of an evening indicates a drinking problem? Please!
