“Mr Bryson had a 20 year history of model making as a hobby. He had worked for Weta workshops in 1996 and 1997 and was employed in 1998 to make miniatures for The Lord of the Rings films …
“In October 2000 Three Foot Six supplied a written contract for all its crew which referred throughout to contractor and independent contractor. Mr Bryson continued to work for Three Foot Six on the set until 2001. On 23 August 2001 it was announced that Three Foot Six had ordered the miniatures unit to downsize. In September Mr Bryson was told that he was not being kept on. He was made redundant and alleged unjustifiable dismissal …
“However only employees have the right to pursue personal grievance claims. If Mr Bryson was an independent contractor then he could not have a personal grievance claim against Three Foot Six Limited.
… In the Employment Relations Authority he was found to be an independent contractor. This meant that he could not pursue his personal grievance claim for unjustified dismissal.
This decision was then appealed to the Employment Court. The Employment Court decided that he was an employee of the company and therefore had a valid personal grievance.
This decision was then taken to the Court of Appeal. The Court of Appeal determined that the Employment Court judgment was incorrect and agreed with the Authority decision that Mr Bryson was an independent contractor. Finally the decision was taken to the Supreme Court.
The Supreme Court overturned the Court of Appeal and agreed with the Employment Court decision that Mr Bryson was in fact an employee.”

I don’t actually mind that there is prompt action to clarify this load of krap and end a fucking farce that Bryson, Three Foot Six, the Employment Relations Authority, the Employment Court, the Court of Appeal, the Supreme Court, NZ Actors Equity, the Australian Media Entertainment & Artists’ Alliance, International Federation of Actors, the NZ CTU, and Warner Bros couldn’t make much sense of.
[Given that those first two parties and the various courts could not agree, those actors unions and CTU all suggested something that is illegal, and Warner Bros, who must have seen about every type of contract there is on earth, had trouble with it]
“But Green Party co-leader Russel Norman said New Zealand was prostituting its industrial laws to satisfy a multinational corporation.”
It’s what you get, Norman, when the law is a bitch and needs tarting up.
And further –
What is with that crazy CTU woman Helen Kelly [TV ONE NEWS yesterday evening] accusing Prime Minister Key of bowing to international pressure when she seems to have condoned the actors’ actions of bringing a fucking global boycott to bear on Peter Jackson ["The 17 August letters" posted October 28th, 2010 at 2:04 pm by David Farrar] and so politely telling him so by a ‘Cc’ added to a letter to 3 Foot & Limited, Auckland
Bryson signed a contract to get the work then used the courts to alter the terms of that contract in a way that was entirely at odds with that contract. Mr Bryson was not acting in good faith when he signed the contract. A fundemental requirement of employer employee relations.
This law required clarification and far from reducing workers rights it prevents them from being dishonest in their dealings with the employer. If a law existed that allowed an employer to pull the same sort of shit the unions would be exploding all over the place.
Attacking this law clarification makes me wornder at the morals of people who cliam the power to act in bad faith as being a workers right. Oh wait Russell Norman, never mind, I’ve already got a good idea where his morals are. Power without accountability for him.
There has been some speculation about why The Hobbit was targeted and not the likes of Spartacus. Some have suggested it is because the bird doesn’t like to shit in its own nest, but I think the nest is larger than thought. I’ve had a couple of interactions with friends in the last week or so that has suggested that there were a number of people who didn’t agree with my support of “The Keep the Hobbit in NZ” campaign. These were Aucklanders I might add – and one being a friend of one of the AE executive who has had a reasonably high profile in this dispute. Then last night I had a brief discussion with another friend (not a close friend mind) who is an actor/director here in Auckland also. This person also believed it was the wicked actions of Warners that caused the dispute. It was all just a ruse to get more money out of NZ.
Originally I had thought – yes – they’re not targetting Spartacus because of the relationship between Jennifer W-L, and her husband Michael Hurst – an actor/director on the show. But it would seem its more the actions of the Auckland AE members targetting something outside their own nest to get changes to the Auckland conditions – which I have been told are not good. I would wonder just how many of the Auckland AE members are involved in The Hobbit. Remembering of course – LOTR was filmed south of the Bombays.
Is that all this is – the Auckland actors trying to exert their muscles over the rest of NZ? Notable also – there was very little engagement from the Auckland actors and film workers.
The entire blame Warners line tends to fall on its ass with them staying here though doesn’t it. 30 mill is chump change for what we’re getting out of it.
For some reason I was unable to edit the above comment, but what I had mean to say, was “Notable also – there was very little engagement by the Auckland actors and film workers in the rally for Keep the Hobbit in NZ”. Not actually being in the film industry, but very pro NZ and very much into improving our economy, I had blindly thought everyone else in Auckland would be equally so.
How do you punish an 11-year-old mini crime wave? We were the victims of very young offenders earlier in the year, and we can understand how this boy’s mother feels; full credit to her for actually WANTING to come up with a punishment that will be of consequence.
Didnt Labour pass legislation to clarify that real estate agents were independent contractors ? How can Labour say they want to keep the hobbit here but oppose legislation that is critical to it ? What is the problem with clarifying that when you sign on as a contractor with all its tax benefits then that is what you are ? Why is it OK for an overseas union to push its case but an attack on our soverignty when an overseas company spending 670 million wants some clarity ?
How crap are our journalists breathlessly towing the union conspiracy lies when a 10 year old can figure out that Warners couldnt possibly engineer the whole thing.
Some people wonder why I am anti homosexual activist. Read the comments at the link below.
These demands are madness. Do these homosexual activists think that the people in charge of policy at NZ Blood Services
are homophobes? How many would be happy to accept blood from a homosexual or prostitute who said they always used a
condom?

Jimbob, I agree that the Bryson decision does look funny, but do we really know it wasn’t a procedural issue to do with the Employment Relations Authority? That is, was it a ruling about contractors, generally? (Perhaps someone with a legal background can fill us in.)
If it was a general legal ruling, it looks absolutely bonkers! Why isn’t NZ’s legal profession upholding the freedom of contract better than that?
Does anyone else here like Swedish death metal band “Amon Amarth”? I am not a great fan of death metal but this particular band’s music I am finding strangely enjoyable – in an ear drum shattering way.
bb – given we now live 2.6km from our nearest neighbour with small kids, I think I am now immunised against trick or treaters. When I lived in Avalon in Lower Hutt it was like Halloween every day but I came to understand that what I was seeing were not vampires or witches but just women in burkas.
Why not film the Hobbit in Christchurch
Then when it is finished there would be all these quaint little houses for people to live in that don’t have any at the moment

Has our society really come to this; that we don’t know how to discipline and train kids up to the age of 11?
I wonder what Sue Bradford’s answer would be?
Good grief, most of us and our peers would have been thrashed to within an inch of our lives if we did half of the things this little shit did. And I don’t even blame the kid primarily, but rather the useless parents who allowed him to get to this age with presumably no discipline and no consequences.
Eleven years old is too bloody late to start the process. No doubt this kid will become yet another drain on resources as he enters our courts and corrections systems. This sort of crap makes me wild.
A significant problem with the above legal stoush is that the employment relations authority and the court of appeal seem to have an understanding of what a contract is whereas the employment court and the supreme court rule from an employer/employee relationship angle, and my strong misgivings on past performances of the E C and the SC being legally objective are aroused.
Did Bryson enter into a contract or not was the only question surely.
No. You discipline from the start. By 4 it’s getting too late. In a way I feel sorry for the mother. She’s been holding the baby, and he’s been allowed to run wild. The boy doesn’t appear to have had a meaningful man — ie, father worthy of the name — in his life to sort him out. Tragic. He’s headed for jail.
Some people wonder why I am anti homosexual activist. Read the comments at the link below.

Yeah, unbelievale Chuck.
And I really like this bit:
If it turns out not to be based on robust evidence, then the government and NGOs need to adjust their policies accordingly, so that potential gay male blood donors can perform our civic responsibility and meet the needs of others at times of severe injury and hardship.
Their “civic responsibility” is to keep their poisoned blood away from the rest of society. I’d rather bleed out, than accept a sodomite’s blood with the chance of then going on to contract HIV/AIDs. And these pricks think they’re doing us all a big favour by “meet[ing] the needs of others at times of severe injury and hardship.” If I had my way all sodomites would be put out on distant offshore islands in quarantine away from the rest of society.
Eleven years old is too bloody late to start the process. No doubt this kid will become yet another drain on resources as he enters our courts and corrections systems. This sort of crap makes me wild.
I usually agree with you but think you are likely wrong on this one. I have worked in mental health for about a year a very long time ago. Punishment does not work the same with those with mental health problems.
I lobbied strongly against the anti-smacking legislation. However, physical punishment is not the answer in some cases. This may be one of them.
When I lived in Avalon in Lower Hutt it was like Halloween every day but I came to understand that what I was seeing were not vampires or witches but just women in burkas.
And were most of those women Somali? – I believe most of the Muslims in the Hutt Valley are Somali refugees. Would that be your understanding too, Brian?
A mate of mine who taught at Hutt Valley High said they had a lot of trouble at the college with Somali/Muslim students. One thing I recall him saying was the Somali/Muslim male students had major issues with respecting female students and teachers. As I’ve said before, do we really need or want these kind of people within our society?
Is everybody looking forward to Halloween this Sunday?
Yes actually. I was up late making wooden swords for the boys to dress up as pirates for their creche today, so I’m looking forward to the complaints about encouraging old-fashioned boisterous boy behaviour…
We’ll just stick a “by appointment only” sign on the gate and have some lollies for the neighbours kids.
A really good New Zealander, Lieutenant Colonel John Masters, died in a Christchurch hospice yesterday. Masters was first well known for his solo two-day rescue of a wounded Gurkha NCO in the Borneo jungle behind Indonesian lines during the Confrontation. For this, the Brits, on the Gurkhas’ nomination, awarded him the Military Cross. Masters was also the last commander of the NZ battery in Vietnam. He then spent years fighting vigorously on behalf of the neglected and rejected NZ Vietnam veterans. He was a leader in the campaign for recognition of the suffering of the veterans and their families from Agent Orange.
John Masters led a good and worthwhile life, shepherding his men until the end.
He was NOT the person who posted on Kiwiblog as Colonel Masters. Old comrades and old acquaintances, including me, praised him on Kiwiblog thinking the “Colonel Masters” posts were from the real Colonel Masters – John Masters. We mentioned his recent biography, A Bridge Over, by Allan Marriott. Reprehensibly, the poster using the pseudonym “Colonel Masters” allowed our posting to continue for a year or more before admitting he/she wasn’t in fact the NZ hero, Colonel Masters.
The anonymous poster said the pseudonym was chosen in September 2007, and offered this explanation for not clarifying the confusion earlier:
…It should have been fairly obvious that a gentleman like him would be unlikely to adopt the handle “Colonel Masters”.
Who ever could think John Masters wouldn’t have posted under his own name if he had been active in the Kiwiblog comments? Certainly no-one who served with him or otherwise knew him.
I have no problem at all with the neighbours kids doing the Halloween thing, what does piss me off though are the groups of teenage kids who do not live anywhere near us knocking on the door.
KrisK, Do you realise not all gay males engage in sodomy? Are you aware of the growing incidence of heterosexual males engaging in sodomy with female partners? Is your objection due to the practice of sodomy as defined by your term sodomites or is your problem with homosexuals and you are just using sodomites as a pejorative?
I usually agree with you but think you are likely wrong on this one. I have worked in mental health for about a year a very long time ago. Punishment does not work the same with those with mental health problems.
If he was severely mentally disabled I may have some sympathy for your view, Chuck, but this kid only suffers from “attention deficit disorder”. From IV2′s link:
The Masterton woman, who cannot be named for legal reasons, broke down in tears while speaking about her boy, who has an attention deficit disorder, and her loss as to make right “the terrible things he’s done”.
I have known many kids with this ‘condition’, and while they may be more naughty than other children they can still be taught limits and consequences. Perhaps the consequences just need to be harsher so that the message gets through. And in many cases I believe ADD is a modern ‘condition’ more the result of slack parenting than some hard wired brain type condition. Who of our vintage remembers many or any kids we grew up with that suffered from ADD? I believe most of these kids just need a firmer hand to sort them out in their earlier years. And as others have said, a father figure wouldn’t go a miss either.
If you’re a DC comics fan, be sure to check out this week and next week’s episodes of Smallville on TV2 tonight. They form a kind of mini story called Absolute Justice (poster), which features appearances of characters from the Justice Society of America, including Hawkman, Dr Fate, and (briefly) the Sandman. I’ve watched it on the internet already, and it’s not too bad, especially if you’re a fan of the golden age.
On the government electronic tender website today:
The Ministry for the Environment (MfE) seeks proposals to provide services and advice relating to the establishment of the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA).
Requirement identification and integration services are required to enable functions of the MfE, the Ministry of Economic Development (MED) and the Environmental Risk Management Authority (ERMA) to be integrated to form the new EPA on 1 July 2011.
Anybody else heard that NZ was to have our very own EPA? And why do we need one now?
Great letter here to Rush Limbaugh from an angry Hillary Clinton supporter who was a Democrat for 32 years, but no more. It’s not just the way they treated Hillary during the 2008 election that he’s angry, but the cheating “Alinsky Rules” tactics used by the Dems.
If you have not seen it already, Rush, you need to watch Gigi Gaston’s documentary “We Will Not Be Silenced 2008″. I’m featured in a segment on the voter fraud that was committed in the Iowa Caucus back in January of 2008. While I was always aware Democrats use unions and other means to cheat in elections, I never knew the Democrat Party was capable of the large-scale, aggressive, unapologetic fraud it committed on Obama’s behalf all through 2008. In Iowa, I watched Obama’s ACORN and SEIU goons push and shove old people, bully them, and intimidate them when they wanted to vote for Hillary Clinton. I saw scores of Illinois license plates fill the parking lots outside caucus locations, with Chicagoland Obama supporters illegally entering the Caucus sites to vote for Obama and game Iowa for him. Having planned ahead, Obama supporters actually RAN those caucus sites, and held the doors open for all these fraudulent voters to walk right in, without being asked for IDs, where they then took control of the caucuses and bullied the Iowa residents into supporting Obama — lest they be called RAAACISTS! out in the open in front of their friends and neighbors in those open-air caucuses.
[...]
For almost a year, the Obama zealots and the Left waged all-out-war not just on Hillary Clinton, but on lifelong, loyal, dyed-in-the-wool Democrat voters like me. This came straight from the top, from Obama himself. Both he and his wife Michelle called the Clintons racists. Obama’s surrogates like James Clyburne, Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson, John Lewis, and others called Geraldine Ferraro, Madeline Albright, and others racists. The Obamas toxified the South Carolina primary, in particular, with foul race-baiting and turned North Carolina and Indiana into racial powder kegs by ramping up accusations that anyone not supporting Obama was a vile racist that needed to be pounded into the ground.
Stephanie Tubbs Jones, my former Congresswoman back home in Cleveland, was a black Hillary Clinton supporter to the very end — and she was called a “race-traitor”, an “Aunt Jane”, and all manner of worse names as she was bullied, berated, and verbally assaulted by the Obama team…because she was black and dared to stand with her friend Hillary Clinton, the person Tubbs Jones knew would make a better president than “The One”. To her dying day in August of 2008, Tubbs Jones was threatened by the Obama campaign and told she’d be primaried in 2010 and kicked to the curb for being a “race-traitor”. She died of a brain aneurysm while driving her car, and Obama supporters filled Daily Kos, DemocratUnderground, and other George Soros-supported sites with lies about her drunk driving, doing drugs, and other slurs because even after she died these people wouldn’t stop hating her for daring to be an outspoken black woman who would never abandon Hillary for Obama.
[...]
Do you want to be in a party that calls people racists for stepping out of line and voicing opposition to the socialist lurch of the current administration?
Do you condone voter fraud and the shameless, undemocratic tactics employed by Democrats?
Do you wish to associate with the likes of ACORN, the SEIU, the Black Panthers, and all the other thugs, goons, and degenerates the Obama campaign and White House employ as the DNC’s muscle on the ground?
It is crystal clear that being a patriotic American who loves this country is intellectually incompatible with being a Democrat. If you love America and want it to prosper, the Democrat Party is at absolute odds with everything we need for a thriving, successful economy.
He makes the point that it will take decades to clean this Democrat taint from the people Obama has installed..
The reason so many of us support Governor Palin is not just because we see the same Alinksy assaults being waged upon her…but the woman is pitch-perfect in outlining exactly why Obama and the Left are wrong, and why Democrats under Obama are dangerous to have in elected office.
I know you talk about a “Hillary 2012″ but Rush, as much as I love Hillary Clinton, and as much as I worked my heart out for her in 2008, there’s no way that even she can repair the damage Obama has done to the party. Certainly not by 2012. MAYBE the Clintons and their supporters can purge the Obama lunatics from the party by 2016…but I doubt even that will happen. Just like with the Leftists Carter infected the Democrat Party with, Obama legacy hires will be in the DNC for a generation to come…and it might not be until the 2030s before the Democrats can remove the taint Obama and his Leftist agenda have put on the party.
Looks like there are a lot of angry people out there.
Read the whole letter reprinted at Atlas Shrugs.
I have no issues with celebate homosexuals in a societal impact sense. But ACTIVE homosexuals who engage in homosexual sex, especially sodomy, I have a MASSIVE issue with regarding societal impact. And lets be clear, most homosexuals are sexually active, have MULTIPLE casual partners, and some also engage occassionally in sex with women. That HIV/AIDs is spread primarily by active homosexuals is well established, and on that basis alone they should not be permitted to donate blood.
If heterosexual males are limiting their sexual proclivities to the marriage bed, then I guess that’s between them and their wives. If promiscuous heterosexual males are PROVEN to be contributing to the spread of HIV/AIDs then we need to look at that too.
Hey, and while we’re on the blood donation subject, where do I go to complain about being victimised because I lived in the UK during whatever years it was and may have Mad Cow Disease?
If you’re a DC comics fan, be sure to check out this week and next week’s episodes of Smallville on TV2 tonight. Right on, Fletch. The two-parter is the highlight of the whole season, in my opinion.
Plus, Stargate’s Michael Shanks plays Hawkman, and Michael Shanks is awesome.
Scientists think they have discovered the “liberal” gene:
Ideology, they say, is affected not just by social factors, but also by a dopamine receptor gene called DRD4.
The research examined 2,000 subjects from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health, matching genetic information with maps of the subjects’ social networks.
The team found that people with a particular variant of the DRD4 gene were more likely to be liberal as adults – but only if they had an active social life as adolescents.
Now, how the fuck do we treat it and can we start now?
“If I had my way all sodomites would be put out on distant offshore islands in quarantine away from the rest of society.”
Care to reconcile that approach with some Christian values? (being those of the originator as distinct from the sham happy clappy get rich quick values that can be purchased “as seen on TV”)
If you’re in the US, download the FREE application for iPhone, Blackberry, or Android phones, “Voter Fraud”, that helps ordinary citizens to “identify, report and track suspected incidents of voter fraud and intimidation.”
KrisK, That is a more reasoned argument. As James Stephenson points out, I am not allowed to give blood due to possible CJD contamination from living in the UK during the 80’s / 90’s. If the risk posed by my possible exposure to CJD is enough to preclude me from giving blood then a blanket ban on gay males is an appropriate way to mitigate the potential risk.
I will not debate your comment that ‘If I had my way all sodomites would be put out on distant offshore islands in quarantine away from the rest of society’ as your religious dogma will not allow you to separate a person’s value to society from their sexual orientation.
You’ve already identified the solution. All we need is legislation to require all adolescents to be confined to their bedrooms until adulthood. It should also assist in reducing the road toll and traffic congestion, as well as making the place a bit quieter generally. Did the study indicate the prospect of success in addressing what seems from today’s comments to be a spiralling increase in the rate of chutney-punching?
The everloving and tolerant Krisk: “If I had my way all sodomites would be put out on distant offshore islands in quarantine away from the rest of society.”
Yes, well NZ is grateful you don’t have your way and never will.
And as Dime pointed out, I’m likely to take one up the ass from my husband this weekend. So I have to move to an island? What business is it of your’s???
So you have no problem with poofs just as long as they do not actually have sex?
What possible business is it of yours what people do in the privacy of their own bedroom?
If you want to receive blood from sodomites, halfwit, then I guess that’s your business. Most of us who have actually thought about the issue realise that what some “people do in the privacy of their own bedroom” could result in some of us contracting HIV/AIDs were their blood to enter our national blood banks. Ditto for whores who want to give blood.
“And as Dime pointed out, I’m likely to take one up the ass from my husband this weekend. So I have to move to an island? What business is it of your’s???”
“And you wonder why people are turning away from religion.” – people are turning away from religion because it is based on a fallacy (i.e. the existence of a divine being) not because they want to slip one up their partners bum on a Friday night.
Oh look the cowardly smear big blouse is blowing on all two cylinders. What a crackpot and I do hope Jesus and 10 million kids knock on his door. Poodles don’t frighten anybody you twisted creep.
Who is this deranged character? It has to be an out of work woman.
dime,
what gets me about so many of these “scientific” studies that come up with genes for whatever cause they are espousing is they seem to always add a social variant.
A good friend of mine sent this letter to John Key a few days ago:
“I am writing this email as a result of reading the Coastal Coalition advertisement in the Dominion on Wed Oct 27.
It has LONG been a very big concern of mine that this country is giving in to every demand that Maori make in the name of “The Treaty” – that archaic document that was signed between Maori and the “British” Government over 170 years ago, which nobody seems able to definitively interpret as to the meaning of it. I believe even the 2 versions (Maori and English) differ? Was there in fact a Maori written language then? Many of the Maori chief signatories were so illiterate, they could not even sign their names?? Instead, we seem to put huge faith in the oral word passed down over these many years.
Is there another country in the world where ownership of lakes, rivers, mountains seabed etc is given to the indigenous people? (Weren’t the indigenous people of NZ the Moriori?) Do the Maori consider they did not steal the land from the Moriori? Because somehow, they think the British stole it from them!!! What’s good for the goose…..
Maori are forever claiming their definition of “ownership” is not the same as the European definition, and therefore Maori “ownership” will not jeopardise the use of that resource (land, water) to the rest of NZ. Yeah right! Maori constantly claim they will not create barriers or charge others to use these resources…. Ask Taupo boat owners if that is true? Why is it that local Iwi are allowed to charge boat owners to put their boats into the Lake? Why is it that the only people allowed to retrieve golf balls hit into the lake are the local Iwi? Why is it we so often read about local Maori occupying land (they CLAIM is theirs) and putting barriers across roads to prohibit access and yet NO police seem to go there to stop such illegal activities? Maori then tell us they will NOT undertake such actions if they become the legal owners. If they do just that when they are NOT the legal owners, why would we even dream they would NOT do it when they are the owners?
Reverting to the Coastal Ownership advertisement…
1. What IS at stake? 100,000 sq km of foreshore and seabed including airspace above and minerals below?? WOW… weren’t they farsighted seeing the value of “airspace”??? 170 years ago! The mineral wealth of NZ belongs to NZ… NOT 10% of NZ (and how many of that 10% are even full Maori? – mind you that is totally irrelevant as long as you have a smattering of Maori ancestry in your blood – the rest of your ancestry becomes conveniently unimportant.)
4. Why shouldn’t Iwi get a share of it (the mineral wealth)? They already do as equal NZ citizens. When are we ALL going to be treated as equal citizens and ALL share in the wealth and natural resources of this country?
6/7. Was there a 22km limit in 1840? If not, why then are they claiming a fourfold increase?
8/9. Have Maori always thought they owned the seabed? Why has there NOT been a treaty claim before, and why is it one judge can make such sweeping statements?
11/12. Why does John Key want no-one to own the seabed? Doesn’t this smell of avoiding the hard decision? Surely, if the Crown retained ownership, the future remains secure and not forever open for further claims? Isn’t this just trying to appease the Maori Party under this stupid MMP system we are being strangled with?
18/19. Wasn’t (Chris) Finlayson Ngai Tahu’s lawyer? As Minister for Treaty Settlements and the Attorney-General who approves the settlements, is he REALLY a neutral arbiter?
21/22/23. What is “customary title”? If it is indeed, “the right to bypass Resource management”, “the right to extract payments”, “the right to develop and mine the mineral resource”, “the right to all aquaculture developments” and “the right to impose Iwi resource plans on Central and Local government” – then we are indeed giving away a vast majority of rights to a very small minority. Is this FAIR to the rest of the country??
27. Are we still guaranteed free access to the beach and sea? “Yes” say the Maori (see my earlier comments about Taupo) but is it true that such a clause (banning charging) has been left out of the proposed bill?
28. Can Iwi deny beach access? The bill says Iwi can bar anyone from any area “they say is sacred”??? AND Maori wardens can fine anyone up to $5000 for going there!!! Please tell me this is NOT true… What that says is that Iwi could define an entire beach/coastline as “being sacred”! Let’s see the courts challenge THAT one. (Refer 29. “It happens now on beaches Iwi don’t even own”. and 30. “Iwi have sole rights to decide what is sacred”)
31. How much foreshore and seabed will Iwi get customary title to? “Finlayson says 2000km of coastline, Maori MPs say much more and Key says “no one really knows” – scary” – now that really IS SCARY!!!
32. Will this satisfy iwi desires? “No. Any iwi victory just spawns more claims. The Maori party say they won’t stop until the whole of our 200-mile economic zone is in Maori Title.” You had better believe THAT is gospel truth!!!!
I implore you to consider all of the above and keep in mind that “New Zealanders” are NOT only Maori and that “New Zealanders” want to share in the natural wealth and beauty of this country for many generations to come. KEEP the foreshore and seabed in Crown ownership, do NOT make the wishy-washy decision of NO ownership – that is showing a huge lack of committment and leadership. Rest assured, my views are shared by MANY fellow New Zealanders, and you run the very real risk of alienating the vast majority of this country – even (dare I say it) many staunch National Party supporters.
While I am not an active supporter of such groups as Coastal Coalition, I do strongly agree with their sentiments.”
The implications for NZ are bad enough but the Chinese will react for sure. How they react will be interesting to say the least.
As the poster at the bottom of the Telegraph article said:
“It is a little like a drunk taking one final and deep swig of his hardest liquor, with the consequent hangover the next day being far worse.”
We should be looking at protectionist measures. Everyone else in the world is, we keep kidding ourselves that we are operating in a free market. Bollocks of the highest order.
The last time I quoted something that was published on GayNZ in it’s entirety (even though I put in a link), I was threatened with legal action. I wonder if they just go after conservative blogs, or if DPF will get the same treatment.
Hey Kris – I’m still allowed to cop head right? Even though its sodomy?
What if drunk Dime picks up a blonde with big fake breasts and gets himself blown in the bathroom of a seedy bar… then it turns out ive been duped (or didnt care) and its actually a tranny?
I believe you are quoting a myth:
Moriori are not thought to be a separate race existing before Maori arrival but rather effectively a Maori sub-tribe that developed separately on the Chatham Islands. This myth has been perpetuated precisely for the use the writer above has adopted (good for the goose…), i.e. Maori can not criticise colonisation because they themselves colonised another group.
I am not 100% on this, but I believe the treaty came about in its form precisely because the English Crown was seeking to hold themselves to a higher standard in dealing with indigenous peoples. This is probably the reason for the relatively generous terms of the treaty, aside from all the arguments around specific meanings and the wishes of Settlers as opposed to the Crown. For example, as I understand it, Maori were legally declared to be the owners of the land before European arrival.
The simplest thing to remember is that there should be no sex outside of marriage. That excludes porn and self-gratification as well. As for the gory details as you try and find loopholes – no one wants to hear them.
lol ya think Kris is violently masturbating while screaming “im sorry jesus”?
Lucia – I’m not trying to find loopholes. Just getting Kris to define what he thinks we can and cannot do. Is it just gay dudes that have rules? or straight dudes too?
What about hot chicks having sex in the shower? thats about as natural and as awesome as life gets.
They knew they were breaking the rules, yet for some reason did so anyway. But because some priests (who should have set a higher standard) failed, does not therefore mean everyone else gets a free pass.
Big Bruv,
Yes, I’m absolutely serious. There are very good non-religious arguments for learning self-control in this area, as well as religious ones.
“The simplest thing to remember is that there should be no sex outside of marriage. That excludes porn and self-gratification as well. As for the gory details as you try and find loopholes – no one wants to hear them.”
Why ? I assuming this is on the authority of whatever non-existent deity you worship and defer to.
To be internally coherent shouldn’t you have said “includes” not “excludes” ?
Yeah, I think you’re right about my grammar. I had the includes in there at first, and then changed it as I thought it may have lead some deluded souls into thinking that both the mentioned items were ok.
As to the why, in summary, sex outside marriage leads to unhappy outcomes. Porn prevents men from having satisfying relationships with women, even their wives.
Sex is like alcohol : it can be a source of pleasure or misery ( or even both at the same time).
Prostitution in general does not exploit women, it exploits men, in the same way “the pokies” exploit poor people. An exception would the cases of sex slavery involving Asian women on visitor visa’s.
Prostitution should be illegal not because it is immoral but because like cigarette smoking it is physically harmful.
John, are you showing your controlist streak? You conclude that from your point of view smoking, drinking alcohol, and prostitution are “physically harmful”, therefore should be made illegal.
You said “pokies exploit the poor”? So the responsibility is on the piece of metal and elctronics, the machine, instead of the person playing it. Nice way to duck responsibility.
Where do you draw the line? What is left for individuals to choose in the utterly constrained world you propose?
Kris
I don’t agree with your position of putting Homosexuals on distant islands because they are homosexuals or for their lifestyle as heterosexuals also live their lifestyle but within the parameters of their sexuality choice.
However I am very grateful that the blood transfusion service is professional and they clearly state that blood products from active homosexuals is not a safe product for the wider community because their lifestyle choice isn’t either.
To stand up for something, you must believe in its worth. To stand up to something, you must believe that it is less worthy. If you don’t believe that, then it is easier to sit down, to give in and let them do whatever they wan
A long article but this sentence highlights a problem or vacuum we have in Western society today.
Kris
I don’t agree with your position of putting Homosexuals on distant islands because they are homosexuals or for their lifestyle as heterosexuals also live their lifestyle but within the parameters of their sexuality choice.
It was more an extended metaphor to indicate how much damage/danger I view homosexuals/homosexuality represents to society – both in a moral sense (the normalisation of homosexuality as just another lifestyle choice; especially within sex education programmes), and physically (by introducing HIV/AIDs to wider society through bi-sexual encounters with women who go on to spread it throughout the (promiscuous) heterosexual community). Obviously homosexuals giving blood to the blood banks would represent yet another physical threat to greater society.
And I agree; promiscuous heterosexuals are little better. And those who give blood also provide opportunity for other blood-born STDs to enter the blood bank system.
On the one hand you (presumably) accuse me of being a fundy that is “intolerant and bigoted”. And on the other, you dismiss out of hand any argument that is religious. Automatically assuming that there is nothing of value in a religious argument.
And you call me intolerant and bigoted! Oh, the irony …
Automatically assuming that there is nothing of value in a religious argument.
Justification on the basis that some bearded desert nomads a few thousand years ago thought it was a good idea to write into their book of stories doesn’t really stand up against, you know, logic.
I dismiss middle eastern superstition because it is so easy to do so, I also dismiss people who insist that 9/11 was a government conspiracy and dismiss those who insist that man never landed on the moon.
I do not have the time to put up with crazy ideas or superstition.
Where I differ from you Lucia is that I will never try and stop you practising your religion, I will never tell you how you should lead your life or how you should behave.
Justification on the basis that some bearded desert nomads a few thousand years ago thought it was a good idea to write into their book of stories doesn’t really stand up against, you know, logic.
If that was the only justification, sure. But, the God who created all that is sent His son to earth to become a man, and when He grew up, he verified that those bearded nomads were correct in what they wrote. And He expanded upon what they wrote, and proved who He was when He rose from the dead. And somehow, despite being killed on and off for a couple of centuries, His followers founded a religion that underpinned Western Civilisation and still exists today.
bruv – do you ever watch Beck? He’s actually pretty informative. He’s not funny (he rates himself as funny though) and his religious stuff is a bit meh. But its informative. I havent seen him cry for a while which is always good.
Where I differ from you Lucia is that I will never try and stop you practising your religion, I will never tell you how you should lead your life or how you should behave.
So, if I took my car and rammed into a group full of pedestrians just for fun, there’d be nothing from you. Not a peep, not a word of condemnation, no denunciation of my actions or my character?
Say Dime picks up a couple of dishrag whores.. not actual whores.. we head back to my place, just to see what happens.. anyway, say I get a result.. am i all good? is it just the chicks that burn in hell? does a one off bisexual experience mean they are toast?
What if i strike out, but my dirtbag buddy picks up a chick and she decides she would like to be spit roasted? nothing gay there.. is that like a grey area?
I used to watch him, but the more I watched him the more it became obvious that the guy is a cock.
Is he informative?..well that is arguable, and yes, the religious crap does get on your nerves after a while, however, the main reason I cannot stand the prick (apart from his fake tears and religious bigotry) is that he is the one presenter on Fox who does not stick to the company motto.
Beck is not “fair and balanced”
There are plenty of reasons to watch Fox, the hot chicks being one of the better reasons, O’Riely and Hannity are great, that Gretta chick with the funny mouth is all right and Geraldo is good for a laugh…..but, Beck is and will always remain a cock.
Oh sorry, some other blokes with shorter beards agreed and wrote that and other stuff into a revised version of the book (with added extra magic tricks!).
I’m not saying nothing in said book has any value, but that we can easily identify that stuff that does though reasoned thought. After all, you followers of version 2 of the book eat bacon quite happily, whereas those that prefer versions 1 & 3 don’t.
a religion that underpinned Western Civilisation
I will keep saying “bollocks” to this everytime someone states it as some kind of fact. The roots of western civilisation are with the pagans – Greeks, Vikings, Saxons and Celts. Why we had to succumb to such a miserable anti-fun middle-eastern cult I do not know.
I grew up believing I lived in a virtuous country where, while private
landowners owned land near the ocean the ocean belonged to the people
and a queens chain ensured we were free to enjoy the beach wherever
there was any.
The Marine and Coastal Area (Takutai Moana) Bill is a step (some) Maori
are taking towards recognition that as the descendants of the first
occupiers of New Zealand these coastal areas and their resources belong
to them. It is about pushing as far as possible while leaving a few
legal loopholes here and there, hoping the public doesn’t notice.
If there is no outcry as to what is going on here it is because people
either don’t understand or couldn’t believe the government would let anything like this happen.
But there you go, anything to stay in power.

Māori Affairs Committee
Marine and Coastal Area (Takutai Moana) Bill
Attn Hone Harawira
…
However David O Says:
“The select committee which is hearing submissions is not the Fisheries select committee, which heard submissions on Labour’s 2004 law, but the Maori Affairs select committee. This is disgraceful.
The ownership and administration of this enormous piece of public property is a matter of interest to everyone, not just Maori, yet the very nature of the select committee ~ like virtually all of the ‘consultation’ hitherto ~ announces that this is a matter primarily of interest to Maori. Moreover, all of the committee’s seven members are Maori. They or their tribes are therefore potential beneficiaries of the laws they are making. Perhaps some of them may attempt to serve the public good, but even if so, what happened to justice not only being done but being seen to be done? ” http://www.nzcpr.com/guest212.htm
“So, if I took my car and rammed into a group full of pedestrians just for fun, there’d be nothing from you. Not a peep, not a word of condemnation, no denunciation of my actions or my character?”
What a stupid analogy, what you suggest is clearly illegal and would be condemned by any decent society.
I won’t get into the nitty gritty details of what happened between the sheets that evening. But I will say that it wasn’t half as exciting as I’d been hoping it would be. Christine was a decent kisser, but as soon as soon as her clothes came off and she was naked in my bed, Christine informed me that she was a virgin.
“You’ve got to be kidding,” I said. She didn’t explain at the time that she was a “born-again virgin.” She made it seem like she’d never had sex in her life, which seemed pretty improbable for a woman her age.
So if you’re a “born again virgin” but also a drunken party slut who aggressively pursues men considerably younger than you, does that mean you exclusively take it up the arse?
Can’t wait to hear her “family values” speeches for the Tea Party. Will she be smited (smote? smoted?) for lying, or does the whole “I’m keeping the front door locked and only Jesus has the key, you’ll have to come through the back” thing serve to counterbalance that sin?
And how long will it be before dime shows up on her campaign team?
Sometimes the analogy needs to be extreme in order to penetrate the thickest of skulls.
Whether something is legal or not is irrelevant, as societal norms change and therefore what is legal today may be illegal tomorrow, or vice versa.
You demonstrate that you do have limits to what you consider acceptable, and I would guess that you would not hesitate to tell another person who steps over your boundaries (what ever they are) how to live and how to behave.
Hey Kris, what if a dude gets sentenced to life imprisonment (for a crime he didnt commit). Do prison rules apply?
reckon gods like “well, you lasted 10 years before you banged another dude… what happens in prison stays in prison”.
OR
what if like you end up in some hard core prison like San Quentin and the only way to survive is to join the aryan nation. But in order to join the aryan nation you have to provide a few favours.
reckon god would be like “thats why i gave you free will, you hung in there! well done!” or would he be like “you shoulda let some mexican shank you in the shower you dirty gay man”.
I suppose with Iwi corporations worth abut $26B and receiving charity status they can afford to grease the political parties (including the unprincipled Green washed Red Party)”
I will keep saying “bollocks” to this everytime someone states it as some kind of fact. The roots of western civilisation are with the pagans – Greeks, Vikings, Saxons and Celts. Why we had to succumb to such a miserable anti-fun middle-eastern cult I do not know.
All of whom became Christians. Or if you are talking about the old Greeks pre-Roman times, their writings were preserved and copied by Christians. Western Civilisation is synonymous with Christianity, there’s no getting around that.
An(g)us: Who TF is Willow Palin? Sounds like a character from a Hobbit movie we’re being robbed to fund so our Groveller-in-Chief gets an invite to the Oscars.
What if i strike out, but my dirtbag buddy picks up a chick and she decides she would like to be spit roasted? nothing gay there.. is that like a grey area?
Sword fighting is sort of like a…. gray area, ..but remember, if your testicles touch bro…once…maybe….?
The lock had been forced, five wooden doors had been so badly damaged they needed to be replaced, the walls and floors had been gouged with knives, and vodka and orange juice containers were strewn all over the house. It also appeared that sexual activity had taken place on some of the beds, and a computer, some winter gear, and clothing had all been stolen.
So kind of a junior Christine O’Donnell, then? Maybe mummy had Chrissy do some babysitting while she was off making all those “morality” speeches.
No thanks; privileged “popular group” girls who service the entire football team and then have mummy the former Governor use her corrupt connections to State Troopers to get them off the hook because they’re not really rebels at all, just spoilt little brats brought up in a family where “consequences are for poor folks”, were never my thing.
No, that’s not the point. The adoption of Christianity did not lead to Western Civilisation, it lead to the dark ages. The state religion of the Roman Empire, did not form the foundations of Western Civilisation.
The system of government we have has no biblical foundation- it is based on a combination of Graeco-Roman institutions (democracies, republics) and old German systems. Likewise our legal systems borrow heavily from Latin or Pagan Germmanic concepts. Science, medicine all had Greek (or Arabic) roots.
Only the thickest of people believe in middle eastern superstition.
The fact remains that you seek to control how other LAWFULLY go about their business based on morals and rules set down in a book of fiction.
As I have said many times, I am happy for you to live how you wish as long as it does not impinge on me or break any laws, you do not offer me the same respect.
Worship what you want, pray to whoever you like but do not try and tell the rest of us how to live thanks very much.
@dime: God would probably prefer that you get beaten to death for refusing to give in. That way, you become a martyr, and with any luck you’ll get made into a saint (provided someone prays to you and you perform some miracles).
No, that’s not the point. The adoption of Christianity did not lead to Western Civilisation, it lead to the dark ages. The state religion of the Roman Empire, did not form the foundations of Western Civilisation.
Clint, you’re speaking out of ignorance there. If it weren’t for Catholicism we would be still in the dark ages. The CHurch was uppermost in science, universal law, the first to set up universities and many other things. Read the book, “How the Catholic Church Built Western Civilisation” by Thomas Woods.
It is all very well to point out that important scientists, like Louis Pasteur, have been Catholic. More revealing is how many priests have distinguished themselves in the sciences. It turns out, for instance, that the first person to measure the rate of acceleration of a freely falling body was Fr. Giambattista Riccioli. The man who has been called the father of Egyptology was Fr. Athanasius Kircher (also called “master of a hundred arts” for the breadth of his knowledge). Fr. Roger Boscovich, who has been described as “the greatest genius that Yugoslavia ever produced,” has often been called the father of modern atomic theory.
In the sciences it was the Jesuits in particular who distinguished themselves; some 35 craters on the moon, in fact, are named after Jesuit scientists and mathematicians.
By the eighteenth century, the Jesuits
had contributed to the development of pendulum clocks, pantographs, barometers, reflecting telescopes and microscopes, to scientific fields as various as magnetism, optics and electricity. They observed, in some cases before anyone else, the colored bands on Jupiter’s surface, the Andromeda nebula and Saturn’s rings. They theorized about the circulation of the blood (independently of Harvey), the theoretical possibility of flight, the way the moon effected the tides, and the wave-like nature of light. Star maps of the southern hemisphere, symbolic logic, flood-control measures on the Po and Adige rivers, introducing plus and minus signs into Italian mathematics — all were typical Jesuit achievements, and scientists as influential as Fermat, Huygens, Leibniz and Newton were not alone in counting Jesuits among their most prized correspondents [Jonathan Wright, The Jesuits, 2004, p. 189].
Seismology, the study of earthquakes, has been so dominated by Jesuits that it has become known as “the Jesuit science.” It was a Jesuit, Fr. J.B. Macelwane, who wrote Introduction to Theoretical Seismology, the first seismology textbook in America, in 1936. To this day, the American Geophysical Union, which Fr. Macelwane once headed, gives an annual medal named after this brilliant priest to a promising young geophysicist.
You won’t find many historians these days who subscribe to the theory that the Church was the cause of the Dark Ages.
Economic thought is another area in which more and more scholars have begun to acknowledge the previously overlooked role of Catholic thinkers. Joseph Schumpeter, one of the great economists of the twentieth century, paid tribute to the overlooked contributions of the late Scholastics — mainly sixteenth- and seventeenth-century Spanish theologians — in his magisterial History of Economic Analysis (1954). “[I]t is they,” he wrote, “who come nearer than does any other group to having been the ‘founders’ of scientific economics.” In devoting scholarly attention to this unfortunately neglected chapter in the history of economic thought, Schumpeter would be joined by other accomplished scholars over the course of the twentieth century, including Professors Raymond de Roover, Marjorie Grice-Hutchinson, and Alejandro Chafuen.
You won’t find many historians these days who subscribe to the theory that the Church was the cause of the Dark Ages.
You won’t find many that believed that they were all that “dark” either. All the “barbarian” civilisations were far more sophisticated than Roman and Roman-Catholic spun histories would have us believe.
The Dark Ages were “dark” because of barbarian invasions. People too busy getting killed or raped or carried away as slaves to be able to contribute much to civilisation, so agriculture and learning fell by the wayside. These activities were saved by the monasteries, who were able to reintroduce them to people who had forgotten or never learned to plow a field and plant crops, or read and write.
Aah Fletch, Western science only kicked off after the influx of Muslim scientific writings that seeped into the west via the Reconquista in Spain & the Eastern Frontier. Copernicus makes dozens of references to Arabic astronomers that critiqued the Ptolemaic system. Because for hundreds of years, everybody in Europe was too afraid to point out that Ptolemaic system meant the moon would be twice as large at perigee as it was at apogee. Which it clearly wasn’t.
Do you know why?
Because while both the Arabic and W Christian world inherited classical works, the Arabs preserved and expanded them. Christian monastries did not. They let them decay- concentrating on the religious works instead. The Church only ‘got’ science again after contact with the Muslim world circumvented their control on learning.
The Church also murdered the Copernican Bruno. And tens of thousands of people for witch-craft.
It is not a strong claim to state that a few hundred years ago, religious people dominated science. They had a near monopoly on learning and was the predominant culture in the West. But seriously, you want to argue that the inquisition was a vital component of scientific research?
As to economic progress. Schumpeter is well, kind of a pretty dated source. I like the guy, I mean anyone who claimed to aspire to be Vienna’s finest lover, Europe’s finest horseman and the world’s greatest economist has some appeal (especially with the rejoinder that he’d have made all 3, except he and the horses never seemed to get along) And his entertainment of the whores of Vienna in his carriage was quite famous. Guess he wasn’t a very good Catholic.
But seriously, get a grip with more recent economic history. The work by the Nobel laureate Douglass North is quite good. It’s peculiar that the areas of Europe where economic growth was the most advanced- say the Hanseatic League in the Baltic, England & the Low Countries, N Italy- were areas where authority- either from monarchs or the church was weakest.
Freedom & strong property rights were the underpinnings of economic growth in the West, not the Church.
Only the thickest of people believe in middle eastern superstition.
Only the most obtuse continue to denigrate that which they refuse to even understand.
The fact remains that you seek to control how other LAWFULLY go about their business based on morals and rules set down in a book of fiction.
Many of the laws and morals we live by came from that supposed “book of fiction”. I have this wonderful quote from historian Christopher Dawson about the difference that book has made to various pagan cultures.
“The Church had to undertake the task of introducing the law of the Gospel and the ethics of the Sermon on the Mount among peoples who regarded homicide as the most honorable occupation and vengeance as synonymous with justice.”
All those ridiculous trials by nature that used to exist (such as if a person sinks in water, they’re innocent, but if they float they are a witch) came from non-Christian roots. They took a while to wipe out.
As I have said many times, I am happy for you to live how you wish as long as it does not impinge on me or break any laws, you do not offer me the same respect.
Worship what you want, pray to whoever you like but do not try and tell the rest of us how to live thanks very much.
And thus ignoring everything I’ve said so far. What you are advocating for is anarchy.
The Church also murdered the Copernican Bruno. And tens of thousands of people for witch-craft.
Bruno was a heretic for other reasons than his Copernican theories. While as most of those killed for witchcraft died post-Reformation, killed by those in open rebellion against the Church.
Utter rubbish, you bloody bible bashers always bring it back to stupid statements like that.
I am well aware that the basis of many of our laws come from the book of fiction, indeed, that may be the only useful purpose that book has ever served.
As for our “morals” well that is a personal thing, I do not care what your morals are Lucia just as long as you do not break any laws or harm anybody in the process.
The difference between you and me is that your are so bloody arrogant as to think that I need saving and that the way you live your life is so much better, you seek to tell me how I must live my life where as I am happy to let you do as you wish.
If you must save somebody then how about Dime, he needs your help far more than I do, failing that. work on D4J’s anger problem….but whatever you do…stop sticking your nose into other peoples business.
The dark ages were called “dark” because people swallowed the Roman propaganda about the tribes they looked on as sub-Roman, and wanted to believe the hype about the renaissance. There’s no way anyone with an ounce of intelligence can look at the artifacts left behind by those peoples and claim they were not sophisticated civilisations. It was a time of conflict as the vacuum left by Rome was filled, but there was no more killing, rape or carrying off as slaves than under that regime or later Christian ones either. I’d rather have lived life on the bottom rung of Viking or Saxon society than renaissance Italy.
Just because the monasteries inherited the mantle of keepers of society’s knowledge from the Druids etc, does not mean that there is anything particularly special about Christianity.
Strange too that the particular trial of nature you refer to in your 5.38 would likely have been prosecuted by a Church attempting to stamp out pagan beliefs and the victim would no doubt have been some poor woman still being turned to by people because she knew that taking Willow bark was far more effective than praying to St Whoever.
Because while both the Arabic and W Christian world inherited classical works, the Arabs preserved and expanded them. Christian monastries did not. They let them decay- concentrating on the religious works instead. The Church only ‘got’ science again after contact with the Muslim world circumvented their control on learning.
Crap.
Montecassino, the mother monastery, underwent a revival in the eleventh century which scholars now consider “the most dramatic single event in the history of Latin scholarship in the 11th century” (see Scribes and Scholars by L. D. Reynolds and N.G. Wilson, 1991). Because of this revival manuscripts which would have been forever lost were preserved: The Annals and Histories of Tacitus, The Golden Ass of Apuleius, The Dialogues of Seneca, Varro’s De Lingua Latina, Frontius De Aquis and thirty odd lines of Juvenal’s satire that are not found in any other manuscript in the world.
The devotion to books of those monks was so extraordinary that they would travel far and wide in search or rare manuscripts. St. Benedict Biscop, abbot of Wearmouth monastery in England, traveled widely on five sea voyages for that purpose. Lupus asked a fellow abbot permission to transcribe Suetonius’ Lives of the Caesars and asked another friend to bring him Sallust’s accounts of the Catilinarian and Jugurthan Wars, the Verrines of Cicero and De Republica. He borrowed Cicero’s De Rhetorica and wrote to the Pope for a copy of Cicero’s De Oratore, Quintillian’s Institutiones, and other texts. Gerbert assisted another abbot in completing incomplete copies of Cicero’s and the philosopher Demosthenes. A monk of Muri said it all: “Without study and without books, the life of a monk is nothing.” So, we would not be far off the mark in asserting unequivocally that Western civilization’s admiration for the written word and the classics of antiquity have come to us via the Catholic Church which preserved them through the barbarian invasions.
Man kiwiblog has deteriorated. God help big blouse and his constant lying personality. I am not angry blouse you twisted skunk. I wouldn’t bother stalking such a creep as yourself if my life depended on it. You need a BIG LESSON in manners you gutless wonder. Your distorted view of life is beyond a sick joke. Get some help you knucklehead loser.
some bloke sent H Kelly an abusive letter .. called her a stupid cow!!!! abusive or an accurate description.
anyhow, because it was on company paper, he decided it was appropriate to apologise to the stupid cow and she has accepted it .. ffs
Clint, actually, the idea that most of the science came from Islamic or Arab countries is a fallacy, although they did have a few good scholars. The idea they had was that “Allah’s hand is not chained” – in other words, he is not held back by any law, not even his own law of nature. He can do what he wants any time he wants.
In other words, there was no point in discovering the alleged laws of nature, because they didn’t believe in any such laws as would hold back Allah (and any law would be holding Allah back), so they didn’t bother observing it or trying to understand nature. That is one of the reasons that the spirit of scientific inquiry later withered in Islamic lands and they fell behind when the industrial revolution came in.
“Yep…there is a man who is in complete control of his temper.”
What has a temper got to do with acknowledging the depravity of dime. He is a self-confessed whore fucker therefore he makes himself a candidate for Aids. Fuck you twist things you gutless ####. Man I hate your unhealthy fixation with me. I am sorry readers but this will end very shortly.
What a yellow coward front up and receive your medicine you vile sick joke.
I am well aware that the basis of many of our laws come from the book of fiction, indeed, that may be the only useful purpose that book has ever served.
Oooh, an admission! That must have cost you.
As for our “morals” well that is a personal thing, I do not care what your morals are Lucia just as long as you do not break any laws or harm anybody in the process.
Morals are never personal. A person who is addicted to porn harms their loved ones, especially their spouse, in a way that is not so much physical, but moreso in their inability to relate to them in a normal way.
A man who uses women for sex, but never commits, harms every woman he comes into contact with. Even if they consent. What if there is a child? You presumably would want the woman to kill the baby?
The difference between you and me is that your are so bloody arrogant as to think that I need saving and that the way you live your life is so much better, you seek to tell me how I must live my life where as I am happy to let you do as you wish.
No. I think your ideas are dangerous. I’m arguing against your ideas on this blog. I’m not going through your house, finding all your porn and making you watch while I burn it.
If you must save somebody then how about Dime, he needs your help far more than I do, failing that. work on D4J’s anger problem….but whatever you do…stop sticking your nose into other peoples business.
Look, I pray for everyone I come into contact with on the blogs. Even you.
jaba come on a bit of truth, he was a right wing fuckwit who sent her an abusive email, as soon as she demanded an apology or else she would send a copy to the company he rushed to apologise.
Typical reich wing type.
“Morals are never personal. A person who is addicted to porn harms their loved ones, especially their spouse, in a way that is not so much physical, but moreso in their inability to relate to them in a normal way.”
Morals are about the most personal thing there is, we all have different morals, only the religious types try and force theirs onto the rest of us. As for your comments re porn…..dont be so bloody ridiculous.
“No. I think your ideas are dangerous. I’m arguing against your ideas on this blog. I’m not going through your house, finding all your porn and making you watch while I burn it.”
Dangerous?…dangerous because I am prepared to state the obvious and say there is no god?
If you faith is that strong why would you feel threatened at that statement of fact?
Mind you..I do like the bit about you watching……
“Look, I pray for everyone I come into contact with on the blogs. Even you.”
If you want to waste your time praying then knock yourself out, but you would be far better praying for Dime or D4J.
“…only the religious types try and force their [morals] onto the rest of us”
Well I’m a “religious type” bb and I defy you to find me any instance where I’ve even subtly tried to force my morals onto anyone period let alone anyone on this blog.
Rex, I would have thought a guy who has been through the ringer of no-evidence-Web-media-sleaze attacks would have recognised the latest go at O’Donnell for what it is.
I mean the Gawker site. Seriously? I expect nothing more from the mind-transplant-abuse victim, but you…?
Anyhoo, you can read about the bipartisan backlash here, where it seems even the lefty blogosphere is disgusted. As Malkin, a victim of attacks from the same site, said of the site’s….misogynist war on conservative women:
[Gawker] published Sarah Palin’s hacked private e-mails, raided her family’s private photos, stolen from the e-mail account, used Bristol Palin’s illegally obtained private cell phone number from her mom’s private account, recorded her voice mail message and posted it on their website, and reprinted her husband Todd’s private e-mail address and son Track’s private e-mail address.
Ah well, as Democrat-supporting Salon put it: ….and whispered sweet nothings — god, I’m bored to death already, aren’t you?.
As far as Joe90 is concerned, I really hope that he’s not hoping to score with any progressive chicks tonight on the basis of this fabulous effort to keep the movement from breathing its last, because they might just be aware of what the National Organisation for Woman had to say on the matter:
NOW repudiates Gawker’s decision to run this piece. It operates as public sexual harassment. And like all sexual harassment, it targets not only O’Donnell, but all women contemplating stepping into the public sphere.
NOW/PAC has proudly endorsed women’s rights champion Chris Coons, O’Donnell’s opponent in the Delaware Senate race, and finds O’Donnell’s political positions dangerous for women. That does not mean it’s acceptable to use slut-shaming against her, or any woman.
NOW has repeatedly called out misogyny against women candidates, and this election season is no different. Let me be honest: I look forward to seeing Christine O’Donnell defeated at the polls, but this kind of sexist attack is an affront to all women, and I won’t stand for it.
Joe90 will be easy to spot ladies – he’ll be the one loudly proclaiming the virtues of feminism.
the choitnoids and stephensons are so anti Christian/church they will distort truth, facts and reinterpret history to suit themselves. There is actually little point in engaging with them.
The dark ages are the period after the collapse of the western Roman empire. It was a period largely of a lost civilisation but many bright spots remained. Including Celtic monasticism which preserved the church and treasures(Lindisfarn gospel, Book of Kells) and eventually helped to resetablish Christianity in Europe following the nordic pagan invasions.
The Eastern Roman Empire persevered for much longer and resisted many enemies ,including western ones , but Constantinople fell to the Turks 1453. This is said to be one of the drivers of the renaissance, when Byzantines brought their manuscripts west. These Christians preserved western/greek/roman sciece and thinking more than the Musselman who is credited with destroying the great library at Alexandria.
The reconquista in Spain expelled the muslim, did not bring more of their learning to the west.
Copernicus was a Catholic priest.
These west knockers, islam promoters are a strange breed who like to promote the other and do down their own side. I think they like to think they’re big minded and better than the thickos around them.It makes them feel superior.

“Where each person defines his own morality because there are no moral absolutes.”
If we assume for the sake of this discussion that what you say is correct (Wiki does not entirely agree with your view) we still come back to the central issue of….
Who defines the moral absolutes.
My argument is that I will not have somebody else decide what my morals should be based on their religious beliefs, you sure as hell would not put up with being told that you must wear a burqa and you must obey everything your husband says if those were the moral absolutes of a Muslim, so why the hell should I listen to what you or your book of fiction has to say.
He may well fancy you, I for one would welcome it, for weeks now he has been stalking and propositioning me, despite repeated assurances from me that he is wasting his time he does not give up.
I know he is only human but how many times do I have to tell the man I am not gay?
As for the bet, you will not get any takers here mate, he is 100% bottom.
God. Human beings cannot do it. Most of us have an innate knowledge of what moral absolutes there should be (such as the value of human life), but we don’t have the whole story.

First of all, you don't have to accept my religious beliefs.
Second, the moral absolutes that I am promoting on this thread used to be common absolutes held by all those who came from the West. They may have been from a "book of fiction", but that book was influential enough to define the morals of an entire civilisation. We throw that away at our peril.
Third, I don't have a Muslim husband. Are you introducing another argument that questions the validity of any moral absolutes because the moral absolutes of the Muslims are so clearly wrong?
“First of all, you don’t have to accept my religious beliefs”
If that were the case then we would not be having this debate, the reality is that you and the likes of Kris K think you have the right to force your morals onto the rest of us all based on the writings in a book of fiction.
Oops, my comment at 9:06pm came out wrong. Here it is, reformatted:

Either we animals whose every thought and action is predetermined by our genetics, or we are something much more, animated by an intellect and will that can override our genetic programming.
Rex, I would have thought a guy who has been through the ringer of no-evidence-Web-media-sleaze attacks would have recognised the latest go at O’Donnell for what it is.
The wringer I was put through had the handle turned by corrupt police and some people within the “justice” system… the fact that details remain on the web for others to lift out of context is distressing, but let’s be clear about who was responsible – there’d be no articles on the web unless the police manufactured a statement which they then forced a scared young girl to sign.
Having got that out of the way, I checked to see if O’Donnell had repudiated the account published on Gawker. It appears she isn’t denying the incident and indeed there are photos to show that the author did indeed meet O’Donnell in the circumstances outlined. The article you link to has her “spokesperson” indulging in a juvenile personal attack against her opponent (“Classless Coons”, really?… ), blaming him for the article when there’s no evidence he’s responsible and NOW (who’s endorsed Coons rather than O’Donnell) calls him an advocate for women’s rights.
But most of all, I took into account that she is or has been an opponent of masturbation, abortion (including in cases of rape or incest), called her opponent “not manly” etc etc making her a steaming great glob of hypocrisy.
Even Karl Rove and Meghan McCain make no secret of their disdain (McCain called her a “nutjob”) so I’m in exalted company. Check out her “greatest hits”.
“Either we animals whose every thought and action is predetermined by our genetics, or we are something much more, animated by an intellect and will that can override our genetic programming.”
Did I ever suggest that we were animals?, my point has always been that my morals are not determined by what is written in a book of fiction, I know right from wrong and I know what I find acceptable and unacceptable.
Big Bruv, it seems to me Lucia argues her opinion on this blog, and you characterise it as “forcing morals on you”.
Yet you seem to be forcing your morals (arguing your opinion) as well. What exactly is the difference?
I’m assuming you simply expect people to follow the laws of the land, and otherwise do as they like.
So if the law changed to ban sodomy or women wear Burkhas, would you suddenly argue that, according to your moral code, the laws need to be changed? What would be your position on allowing or banning necrophilia? What about fathers that abandon their families? Does your moral code suggest the father can do what they like, or would it suggest the law needs to reflect the responsibility you may feel fathers should honour?
“Every thought and action pre-determined by genetics” (which is not in any way true, but whatever), is somehow bad, but every thought and action pre-determined by God is a-okay.
*confused*
I find that religious people should not attempt to logically defend their position, because it is quite frankly impossible for them to do so. As long as they stick with “I just believe in God”, then alright. It’s when you have them making pretty flimsy strawmen out of scientific concepts they obviously know very little about that it starts to become irritating.
Well that was a nice proletarian evening; fish and chips plus beer at a neighbour’s house while the kids went nuts in the pool..

ChTh..so you have bought the muslim lie and swallowed it whole..how sad ..These theories have been discredited on numerous occasions by numerous experts…Islam is trying to rewrite history..Did you hear the one about how they discovered America..oh and they were in Aussie before any Europeans..No doubt we will hear the same thing soon about NZ.

Just in passing –
“Bryson v Three Foot Six Limited
Vote:What is with that crazy CTU woman Helen Kelly [TV ONE NEWS yesterday evening] accusing Prime Minister Key of bowing to international pressure when she seems to have condoned the actors’ actions of bringing a fucking global boycott to bear on Peter Jackson ["The 17 August letters" posted October 28th, 2010 at 2:04 pm by David Farrar] and so politely telling him so by a ‘Cc’ added to a letter to 3 Foot & Limited, Auckland

Vote:October 29th, 2010 at 8:10 am

Vote:October 29th, 2010 at 8:42 am

For some reason I was unable to edit the above comment, but what I had mean to say, was “Notable also – there was very little engagement by the Auckland actors and film workers in the rally for Keep the Hobbit in NZ”. Not actually being in the film industry, but very pro NZ and very much into improving our economy, I had blindly thought everyone else in Auckland would be equally so.

Why is it OK for an overseas union to push its case but an attack on our soverignty when an overseas company spending 670 million wants some clarity ?

Jimbob, I agree that the Bryson decision does look funny, but do we really know it wasn’t a procedural issue to do with the Employment Relations Authority? That is, was it a ruling about contractors, generally? (Perhaps someone with a legal background can fill us in.)
If it was a general legal ruling, it looks absolutely bonkers! Why isn’t NZ’s legal profession upholding the freedom of contract better than that?

Who ever could think John Masters wouldn’t have posted under his own name if he had been active in the Kiwiblog comments? Certainly no-one who served with him or otherwise knew him.

Chuck Bird 10:23 am,
If he was severely mentally disabled I may have some sympathy for your view, Chuck, but this kid only suffers from “attention deficit disorder”. From IV2′s link:
I have known many kids with this ‘condition’, and while they may be more naughty than other children they can still be taught limits and consequences. Perhaps the consequences just need to be harsher so that the message gets through. And in many cases I believe ADD is a modern ‘condition’ more the result of slack parenting than some hard wired brain type condition. Who of our vintage remembers many or any kids we grew up with that suffered from ADD? I believe most of these kids just need a firmer hand to sort them out in their earlier years. And as others have said, a father figure wouldn’t go a miss either.

RichardX 10:52 am,
I have no issues with celebate homosexuals in a societal impact sense.

If you want to receive blood from sodomites, halfwit, then I guess that’s your business. Most of us who have actually thought about the issue realise that what some “people do in the privacy of their own bedroom” could result in some of us contracting HIV/AIDs were their blood to enter our national blood banks. Ditto for whores who want to give blood.

Manolo (and friends),
I believe you are quoting a myth:

Marine and Coastal Area (Takutai Moana) Bill.
……………………………………………………….
Online submission form

You won’t find many historians these days who subscribe to the theory that the Church was the cause of the Dark Ages.

Only the most obtuse continue to denigrate that which they refuse to even understand.
Many of the laws and morals we live by came from that supposed “book of fiction”. I have this wonderful quote from historian Christopher Dawson about the difference that book has made to various pagan cultures.
All those ridiculous trials by nature that used to exist (such as if a person sinks in water, they’re innocent, but if they float they are a witch) came from non-Christian roots. They took a while to wipe out.
And thus ignoring everything I’ve said so far. What you are advocating for is anarchy.

Lucia,
The dark ages were called “dark” because people swallowed the Roman propaganda about the tribes they looked on as sub-Roman, and wanted to believe the hype about the renaissance.

A man who uses women for sex, but never commits, harms every woman he comes into contact with. Even if they consent. What if there is a child? You presumably would want the woman to kill the baby?

the choitnoids and stephensons are so anti Christian/church they will distort truth, facts and reinterpret history to suit themselves.

First of all, you don’t have to accept my religious beliefs.
Second, the moral absolutes that I am promoting on this thread used to be common absolutes held by all those who came from the West. They may have been from a “book of fiction”, but that book was influential enough to define the morals of an entire civilisation. We throw that away at our peril.
Third, I don’t have a Muslim husband. Are you introducing another argument that questions the validity of any moral absolutes because the moral absolutes of the Muslims are so clearly wrong?

Vote:October 29th, 2010 at 10:13 pm

With Joe90 I agree: dealing with his brain (and I use the word “brain” only in the most basic sense of twitching nerve fibers), one is reminded of the old saying All hope abandon ye who enter here.

Palin will run for president ‘if there is no one else’ – Dom 30/10/2010
Surely the republicans can find one in their number with an IQ over 90 that can make themselves available to save the Americans from having to endure this woman’s campaigning. She pretty much single handedly white anted the last campaign and is largely responsible for Obama being in power. If she is the best the republicans can produce then Obama is a shoe in next time around as well.

@Transmogrifier at 10:13pm: And Scientists that attempt philosophy without any training can come a cropper too. Dawkins springs to mind. And you too quickly make assumptions:
is somehow bad, but every thought and action pre-determined by God is a-okay.
Both those ideas in your sentence were never argued.
