Rugby World Cup 22 October 2011

October 22nd, 2011 at 3:27 pm by David Farrar

I loved the full time try to Wales. They lost, but I have never seen Wales play as well as they have in this World Cup.

So it all ends tomorrow. Where will you be watching the final, if you are?

I will be at the Howzat Bar, Makati City, Manila, Philippines. I’m pretty sure the only other two Kiwis I know in Manila will be seated right next to me.

And yep, I’ll be cheering like hell for the underdog France…..Watching self-professed ‘comedian’ Ali Williams arrogantly mock them at the press conference earlier in the week and then sneer at the International Media when they tried to pull him into line confirmed for me who the most arrogant, disrespectful and downright obnoxious team at this World Cup are.

Disappointing also that the All Blacks are repaying the French gesture of wearing their ‘away’ strip in the final (done as a mark of respect to NZ as hosts) with the promise that they will do their sickening ‘throat slitting’ gesture at them during the pre match ritual- Stay classy New Zealand.

Also amusing to see that the ticker-tape victory parade has already been planned. NZ getting cocky and ahead of themselves at a Rugby World Cup? Surely not?? As David Campese said on TV the other night all France have to do is ‘Flick the Switch’ and things could get very, very interesting for the ‘invincible’ All Blacks…

Longknives, Ali Williams doesn’t strike me as arrogant, he’s more of a “class clown”. Unfortunately his style of humour wasn’t appreciated by the international media, and to be fair to them it probably wasn’t appropriate in that sort of forum. Ali was was obviously stung by the rebuke, and although his reply was defensive I’m guessing he’ll learn from his mistake. I’m not sure about SBW though, he seems a bit more self-centred.

I think all the teams have behaved reasonably well and with the possible exceptions of Quade Cooper, Mike Tindall and Eliota Fuimaono-Sapolu, all have had a good time here.

And I’ll be watching the final from my lounge too.

@ DPF; Wales got stage-fright in the two matches that mattered. Even with 14 men they could and should have beaten the woeful French last week.

And whatever lessons Paddy O’Brien has been giving Wayne Barnes since 2007 haven’t worked. Blind Freddie could have seen the forward pass he missed last night when Shane Williams scored. It was an appalling decision for international referees.

Magnificent answer Pauleastbay- Showing yourself to be a real intellectual heavyweight there.

Just because I am a New Zealander I have to blindly support a sports team that, quite frankly, I find revoltingly arrogant?

When I grew up I worshipped the All Blacks, still have the old Steinlager poster with all the ’87 World Cup results written in in felt pen! Unfortunately the behaviour of the All Blacks from about 2005 (O’Driscoll tackle) onwards has seen them plummet in my eyes to the extent that I can longer support them. Even on last years end of season tour I (and the rest of the rugby world outside New Zealand) was stunned by the blind arrogance shown over Mealamu’s blatant headbutt of Moody.
The All Blacks seem to know they are a ‘Protected Species’ and are clearly above the laws that bind every other player. Now we have arrogant twats like Ali Williams smirking as he mocks the opponent prior to the World Cup Final, then throwing a tanty when the media try to pull him into line. This being the same Ali Williams who ironically had a cry to the media about the World Cup being “Completely overrated” in late 2007…

Call me old fashioned but oh for the good old days of battle hardened, dignified All Blacks like Buck Shelford and Michael Jones- No arrogance, no mocking the opposition, no bullshit excuses when they lost.

Firstly, what god given right have the media to pull anyone into line?

This world cup would have been a major success if there was not one reporter present, not one single reporter put one bum on a seat. But I can say there have been several reporters trying desperately to be a negative as possible regarding this event

Then: O’Driscolls tackle, actually it was Umanga’s tackle, the leprechaun was the receivee

Buck Shelfords scrotum getting ripped open by the French.
Cheating referees, South Africa 1970 and every previous tour to the republic, cheating japee bastards is the phrase that springs to mind there

Sean Fitzpatrick getting his eyes gouged, South Africa.
and on and on and on and on and on

The frogs have been the dirtiest bastards ever to pull on football boots since the game started.

Sorry but you are still a dick and trying to be pretenious with it

So I’m a “Dick” simply because I don’t wear a Black Eyepatch and salivate like a lovestruck fanboy over your precious All Blacks??

Hell it’s not just me. An older lady at the chemist the other day was chatting rugby with me and said although she wanted NZ to win she thought Ali Williams behaved like a ‘rude and spoiled brat’ with his little self righteous temper tantrum…

I suggest you go overseas sometime. See the World. You will find the ‘Rugby World’ doesn’t supplicate at the feet of the All Blacks quite like fanboys like you seem to think they do…

Thanks JB – rheemed it is. 41 years, very expensive if it goes tits up after that long. keep it together

Longknives FFS, I very rarely watch a game of rugby, but what makes me sick is the contrarian that is obvious in your comment.

One incident gives you the excuse to blather on, if that’s the extent of your concern ,it s a nothing. Annoying the media should be encouraged

I think Andrew Hore should have been kicked for shooting seals, I think Adam Thompson should have been kicked for smacking his girlfriend, Jimmy Cowan should have been kicked for being arrested a couple of times for drunken behaviour. Sione Luaki should have been kicked for assault. Quade Cooper should have been kicked for burglary, Mike Tindall for motor boating some chick in a bar ( na, footy trip for Michael ) and that’s just off the top of my head.

I hope you enjoy the game and are suitably indignant every time the All Blacks do something successfully

Kickoff is 1am for me so by the time we watch the Webb Ellis Cup presentation it will be after 330am bedtime! Watching the game with kiwi rugby coaches and players for the youth team I help coach at the head coach’s place – he’s a Maori so there’ll be heaps of good tucker!

Wales need a decent kicker – if they did we’d be playing them in the final.

Barnes’ forward pass faux pas wasn’t as bad as Cardiff 2007 but you’d think he would’ve learned. That said as a ref forward passes are THE trickiest part of the game to officiate. It is easy to get them wrong – all refs have called em when they weren’t forward and missed them when they were. The worse part is that even when you make a safe and accurate call, only a portion of the players and few in the crowd have the benefit of seeing the angle clearly as a good fit ref has hence the booing, heckling or player whining that goes on. You also have to put up with players ‘lobbying’ hard for a forward pass – antics that can be shut down by asking and ensuring only the captain talks to you.

Really looking forward to the game!! Wish I was there!

Hope NZ have a win but with class from both players and supporters. I cringe when I hear people rubbish the opposition, while seeing defeat is equivalent to suicide. It’s only a game. However a NZ victory will add to the warm feelings to the RWC.
I will be in my lounge in Gore watching a celebration in rugby.
Still disappointed in the planning of an Auckland-Upper North Island RWC.
Six of the last eight games at Eden Park, two in Wellington
Surely one knockout match could have been played in Dunedin. We actually use money down south not doing barter .It will be interesting to see how the victory parades(If any) will be scheduled. Obviously ChCh will get one because it is always being mentioned. Dunedin,Invercargill,Nelson ? Too small a population. We might get the reserves or nonplayers.
Next year will Dunedin move beyond an All Black game against Fiji,Samoa or Tonga ?
What about Invercargill ? They have played matches in Albany,New Plymouth and Napier.
Summing up, surely the All Blacks are a national team.
