Autumn mirror reflections on a very blue Blue Lake. St Bathans, Central Otago, New Zealand. Photography by Todd Sisson.
Back into some classic South Island scenery this week, the oft-photographed Blue Lake in St Bathans. This image was made using the very last of the sun’s rays while leading a private workshop. I will be visiting here again this weekend as part of our final winter landscape photography workshop – can’t wait!
As always, this is available as a [free iPad wallpaper] Password = freewallpaper
Have a great week – almost over ‘the hump’…..
Cheers – Todd

LOL – that scenic lake is the result of strip mining for Gold. It is not a “natural” feature of the landscape at all

No, it’s not natural, there are a lot of post gold mining landscapes in Central Otago. But this is quite unique and a great wee spot.
In the only triathalon I’ve competed in I did the kayak leg up an down the Blue Lake a couple of times, a dog leg course.

Another superb example of the use of light & colour, with the added bonus of a reflection. Like the use of the reeds in the foreground to give the image more depth.

It may not be ‘natural’ Andrei, but Todd has captured the beauty of this gorgeous spot.
Vote:We have visited in all sorts of weather, and light conditions, and never failed to get a
good photo – might I add, not coming anywhere near this breathtaking shot.
Glad to see the sun down your way, Todd. How about sending us some up here!!

Fred I don’t care that is man made my point is that there is a great deal of fuss made about mining and how it wrecks the environment and yet if I were to suggest that St Bathans should be restored to its “pristine” state all hell would break loose – you can count on it.

The terrible effects of mining

Yes, I often refer to St Bathans as New Zealand’s most photogenic industrial wasteland
Personally I am not against carefully managed mining. There, I said it.
