Actually Carlos, I think we have to be fair. I’m one who bangs on about nascent Chinese colonialism in NZ and we have to be able to see things from both sides. I didn’t think much about it until I read a Mombiot article about the mau mau rebeliion. I don’t think we have to take the blame personally however as the white guilt NZ crowd do, anymore than I take the blame for what Hanover did to it’s clients.

Carlos- Me neither. Maori don’t seem to suffer much guilt for the atrocities they committed on each other (not to mention ones they committed on early European settlers)

Such rep as he remaing will be gone forever. Someone should remind Tua of the effect an idiotic comeback had on Joe Louis. But it was “the money”. Clearly Tua’s former manaement and the Pasifika religous leeches have had more than their fair share.

It’s interesting. Most ethnic groups and civilizations have committed atrocities of varying degrees on other peoples throughout different points in history. Europeans just happened to be the best at it. If other civilizations could have achieved what European empire builders did, they would have.

I think his is the only blog that deletes any comment that is critical of him. He must be a weak character to be prepared to make comment but not tatke them..

One of the main reasons apologies are being sought is because there is usually a bit of a pay out with it.

Also it appears to be leftists who are keen on it.They can distance themselves from evil colonialism,imperialism etc as they weren’t around when the Empire was being built. If anything they precipitated is decline by encouraging Indian indepedence in the 20’s and 30’s. It was Labour that cut and run from the Palestine Mandate and who brought forward the grant of Indian independence by 1 year.

So lefties think they can gain friends domesticlly and internationally by kowtowing to the demands of third world despots,continuing to give awy borrowed money to the elites of Africa and Asia and all the while present themselves as “progresive”. (Sadly Cameron is little different)

You don’t vote Labour or Green, that’s your problem. Perhaps it’s because of the upcoming US referendum on Barackus Pompus, but the whole “white guilt” schtick is becoming topical, as witness this very recent article – Behold, The Self-Hating White Person – which explains the key driver:

Since progressivism is largely a status game, in which people compete for social prestige by repeating a set of approved phrases and opinions to other status-seeking mandarins, it’s not surprising that some will go to sado-masochistic lengths to remain part of the alpha group. By now, the increasingly creepy tendency of using the word “white” as a glib insult has become well established in left-wing commentary.

The article points to a piece by some guy named Dunn, who described the recent GOP convention as a “Gathering of Pasty White People”:

“The Gathering of Pasty White People”: this is how Dunn prostitutes himself to the sociopaths and racists in his movement. As in the Soviet Union, one must continually prove oneself to be part of the correct crowd. Purity, you see, comes from ritual self-abasement, from flogging oneself in columns and blog posts and from swearing through gritted teeth that you love every minute of it.

Among progressives, low-rent snark like “frighteningly white” is required to prove you are part of the in-crowd. In short, it’s not anything as real as actual internal feelings of guilt, let alone intellectual discussion or debate. It’s simply another version of the same old argument-by-emotion that enables left-wing herding of the electorate nowadays.

@ Longknives & flipper – I just hope that Tua watches the video from London of what Muhammed Ali has become; a shell of the great fighter and athlete that he used to be, simply because his brain has impacted his skull too often. I wouldn’t wish that on anyone. Tua made the right move by retiring; any more fights he has are going to be against bums and journeymen, and the meagre amount of money he makes from them isn’t worth the potential for brain damage; or should that be “more brain damage”?

It’s a link-fest – and here’s another one: Victor Hanson writing about the sad state of his home state of California.

It has some of the same themes that others are discussing here, mainly the increasing problems that the left-wing face in dealing with the real world. Hanson begins his piece with a news story about a camping ground that has been closed because of vandals. But tellingly, the real horror the media focused on was that the gang graffiti had been sprayed on trees! He then moves on to discussing the responses of the people who built this: First, tokenism:

Unable to ensure that trees are not defaced? An ancient highway is not upgraded? Presto, zoom ahead to space-age high-speed rail, as if the conditions that created sprayed trees and mattresses lying among the pot-holes will not easily migrate to high-speed rail.

That is, within 10 years I have no doubt that the Fresno-Corcoran (“rail to nowhere”) link will be periodically closed due to stripped copper wire conduit, mattresses thrown over the fence onto the tracks, and the general inability of the state to service the system due to the sort of daily vandalism seen at our local campgrounds.

Second, escapism:

Don’t think Dream Act supporters in Santa Monica or Atherton wish to live in, or visit much, Parlier or Orange Cove. When CSU presidents retire from Central Valley campuses, they usually frown and head to Palm Springs or Monterey. Doctrinaire liberalism is predicated on the notion of escapism, that one has the means and know-how to ensure that children do not go to the schools whose curriculum and policies follow your own utopian thinking. Or that you make sure your “wind and solar and millions of green jobs” windmills are obstructing someone else’s view. Or that the first high-speed rail link connects Fresno with Charles Manson’s prison in Corcoran rather than cutting a wide swath through Bay Area suburbs.

I also liked the crack about “Medieval exemption” where, The mansions of an Al Gore, John Kerry, and John Edwards are expiated by their owners’ always louder liberal outrage.

The kicker of course is that it’s capitalism driving this in many respects:

There is a reason why 90% of professors — life-long tenure, summers off, guaranteed pay raises — are liberal and 70% of small-business people are conservative. The more removed one becomes from the elemental struggle to eat one more day — and never in the history of civilization have so many been so exempt from such existential worries — the more one enjoys the luxury of pondering more cosmic issues such as extending Social Security disability payments to youths suffering from attention deficit disorder or mandating gay history in state public schools or saving the smelt.
…
Bill Gates and Warren Buffett can afford now to be liberal — an expensive indulgence — because in their early incarnations they were no-holds-barred capitalists who made lots of enemies conducting business without mercy and in search of pure profit. (In the 1980s and early 1990s Bill Gates’ Microsoft was cast as a Darth Vader enemy that had crushed the underdog, hip, and nearly insolvent Apple through piratical means.)

Greens are claiming that a referendum is required for a mandate for asset sales (MOM share floats).

Apart from that being a complete reversal of their attitude to referenda since the smacking bill, that would be a fundamental change to how parliament operates. Shouldn’t that be decided be a referendum – a binding one, not a futile CIR one?

New Zealand – ‘perceived’ to be the ‘least corrupt country in the world’ – with our ‘out-of-control’ judiciary – where our NZ Judges have no enforceable ‘Code of Conduct’; no Register of Percuniary Interests and where court proceedings are regularly not recorded?

The Maori Statutory Board wants all children taught Maori, why?. It’s a dying language spoken only by a small number of people. Those same people speak English day by day. To the best of my knowledge only a few old Maori speak it regularly. As a European I don’t know any Maori. I can’t buy a Maori newspaper or take out books in Maori of any interest from the library. I’m all in favour of having Maori available in schools for Maori children but not being compulsory for the rest. Sure learning another language is a good idea. Let it be a practical everyday language such as Japanese or Chinese or a European language.

I’m not against learning maori or it being made compulsory,but what I do want is to be allowed to join my local marae even to be labelled as a token maori as long as i am accorded equal status in voting rights,I’m even prepared to become a republican as long as I have equal opportunities as Maori to housing,welfare benefits etc -on the same terms as guaranteed to my ancestors under the Treaty as British subjects. When will I be declared maori or indigenous or ingenuous?

I believe there is a confusion between the role of central and local government in this debate.

Central government through the Ministry of Education and school boards is responsible for the New Zealand curriculum. It is not the role of local government to deliver public education.

Am I missing something?

Craig today defended using the quote, saying it was a reflection of what some voters thought.

Helensville was more conservative than other electorates, Craig conceded.

If Craig wants to say Key is gay, why doesn’t Craig just come ‘out’ with it?

Twelve Italian priests were about to be ordained. The final test was for them to line up in a straight row, totally nude, in a garden while a sexy, beautiful, big breasted, nude model danced before them.
Each priest had a small bell attached to his dick, and they were told that anyone whose bell rang when she danced in front of them would not be ordained because he had not reached a state of spiritual purity. The beautiful model danced before the first candidate, with no reaction. She proceeded down the line with the same response from all the priests until she got to the final priest, Carlos. Poor Carlos. As she danced, his bell began to ring so loudly that it flew off, clattering across the ground and laid to rest in nearby foliage. No, he was a mentalist Griff.

But I do wish someone else apart from me, would for once, call bullshit on Israel, when they in fact do it. Something that for some reason is quite impossible, for some people, for some reason.

Notwithstanding those very same people have no problems calling bullshit on other events like the “Water Rights.”

Isn’t that peculiar, but there we are.

I was vaguely anti Israel in till I read The Haj by Leon Uris put the whole middle eastern thing into a more understandable perspective
another worthwhile comment is Dylan’s song Not that all Israel does is pure
