In light of the last photo that looked sort of wasp-like (but was in fact a useful and harmless fly), I thought we could do a diversion into those insects that are pests. This is the Asian Australian paper wasp. You might also note its antenna are very different to the last little guy I posted.

Asian? Are you sure it’s not an Australian Paper Wasp? Abdomen looks more brown than yellow & black from this angle.

Wasps are not my favourite creature…. besides, the antenna isn’t the thing to look out for – its the sharp bit at the back!
In fact, this Asian wasp is good reason why BioSecurity measures are needed – didn’t it only get into NZ during the 1980′s?

The fact that this Asian pest is even in NZ is proof that we should’ve heeded Winston’s warnings.

@thedavincemode
I just can’t seem to persuade emperor penguins to drop by the tropical and subtropical locales I like to visit. Any ideas?
@James
I hate common names… yeah, Australian.
@Elyacee
Well these exotic wasps are nasty. Some of the tiny ones we’ve introduced for biological control are much more welcome
Vote:Good biosecurity is fortunately, something all the major political parties agree on.
