Nice the Greens have so much time

March 1st, 2013 at 3:00 pm by David Farrar

Catherine Delahunty blogs:

A quiet road outside Hamilton, the Hukanui Marae car park is full of journalists. Hone Harawira, David Clendon, I and a few others are welcomed on by Ngāti Wairere. This is Tame Iti’s mother’s marae so on the first day of freedom he comes here to start his journey home. Tame is in the wharekai with his sons, mokopuna, sister and other whanau and his lawyer. He is looking great, very calm and tranquil but there is something in his eyes, this strange new morning without bars.

It’s nice a couple of Green MPs have the time to welcome a convicted criminal upon his release from prison.

Does Madam Delahunty and her other Greenie associate seriously think that someone like Tame Iti has any regard for them or for their apparent touchie feelie type concern for his welfare and future?

I’d bet more than a dollar that someone as wily as Tama Iti has the exact measure of these political/sociological babes in arms, and is ready to exploit their heart-worn-on-the-sleeve concern for his welfare to the absolute limit to his and his cause’s advantage.

Really? I didn’t know Tama Iti had given up drinking!

He said once many years ago that he gave up drinking when he got his moko because doing that is part of the [true] culture of that custom.

The thing about Iti, as opposed to say Hone, is that he has genuine principles and he sticks to them. Whether or not you agree with those principles is another matter, but it sticks out a mile. In stark contrast to many [like Hone] who claim to operate on a principled basis but when it comes down to it let them fly completely out the window in favour of the exigency of the moment.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Iti stands for Parliament one day, if he did, I think he’d get in, in one of the Maori electorates. He may never do that, I suspect he concluded a long time ago he doesn’t wish to join that poisonous game of snakes and swine, but who knows. And if he does, we could do a lot worse than have someone like him in the House. As I say, whether or not you agree with his principles, he does have them. Same as Turia and (possibly? – my jury’s still out on him), Sharples.

What romanticised tosh. Is this written by a grown up?

Kerry Tankard will be well known to some readers.

She is a Wellington based anarchist, connected to the 128 Abel Smith Street crowd. She also worked with three of the “Urewera 17″ Simon/Rongomai Bailey, Emily Bailey and Marama Mayrick, on the anarchist/Green Party supported radical environmentalist film Kotahi Ao.

Activist arrests in Wellington Posted: 16 Oct 2007 21:36

In the interests of supporting those who have been arrested, discussions were held last night at 128 Able Smith St.

I am re-posting a statement verbatim from Indymedia Collective, as a response to those who are concerned or confused about what is being said in media and local gossip.

    Quote:

This morning I opened the herald to see what the bullshit the media were spinning about the raids and saw a comment allegedly from a flatmate of one of the activists arrested yesterday in Auckland.

I thought it would be obvious not to comment to the media but apparently not.

I guess I just want to remind people not to talk amongst themselves and speculate and especially do not talk to the media. They are not your friends and they will use you to get the inside scoop.

This was obvious in another article I got forwarded this morning from Bomber’s blog. He was sniffing around last night at Unite and had cornered some less experienced activists and was asking them what was going on…

As someone quite rightly put it last night….’if not one talks, everyone walks’.

It is not gossip it is fucken serious and some of our comrades are facing a long time behind bars, it would be good if people could remember that.

Now is an important time to remember AND PRACTISE those good old rules about security culture and solidarity!

The media are easy to ignore however the filth is a different story and it is likely that they will want to ‘talk’ to some people. If you are concerned about this and don’t know what your rights are etc… please seek the advise of an experienced activist who you TRUST. Maybe we need to have a workshop around this sometime in the next few days so that everyone is confident.

    Love and solidarity!

Please respect the very serious position that the arrests have put some of our very dear friends in.

We have already seen a former policeman, Detective John Dewar, convicted for perverting the course of justice in the Shipton/Schollum/Rickards case; we know they lie.

The case at hand is under District Court strictures, there are suppression orders in place. We would prefer activists not to be branded as terrorists, in the face of Police PR and dubiously executed search warrants, and media clutching at straws to create a “good story”.

To all who have offered support, thanks on behalf of activists who do not have access to these forums. A legal fund has been started, and practical support for the arrestees on remand has begun.

They are Communists under the guise of an Environmental Policy. Iti was and is lapping up all the publicity that this long running episode has generated for him. being in prison was a bit of an artistic retreat for him by the sounds of things. watching the Greens and Harawira and Flavell buzzing around him when he was released is an indication that they are all courting him for the publicity value he has acquired. Harawira’s whanau and constituents mostly comprise of jail bait or ex cons, so he wont mind rubbing shoulders with Iti, and the others view a prison sentence as something of a badge of honour.

Iti’s craving of publicity is so obvious, that i wouldn’t dismiss him being seduced by those politicians wanting to lure him into their respective camps either. Nor would I dismiss the opinion of others about the risk posed by the Urewera gang. It only takes one idiot craving eternal notoriety to turn their hand to assassination.
