Yeah Right the kids will eat that for lunch
March 1st, 2013 at 1:00 pm by David FarrarThe Press reports:
The Heart Foundation is suggesting to low-income parents that they send their kids off to school each morning with cottage cheese pita pockets, celery and hummus, sushi, couscous, leftover chop suey, and chickpea curry.
If any parents actually try sending their kids off to school with that for lunch, I predict a rise in paternal and maternal homicides!

That’s a lot of lunch for a child.

What the hell is wrong with Sandwiches, fruit and a biscuit?

Our daughter has had 4 of those items in her school lunch over the years
Baby-led weaning ftw.
As a helpful guide for those struggling to feed their kids properly, it’s all a bit let them eat cake! though isn’t it?

Written by someone who doesn’t have kids, or a far left leaning nutjob. Surprised they didn’t suggest Vegan food only.

“cottage cheese pita pockets, celery and hummus, sushi, couscous, leftover chop suey, and chickpea curry.”
Where’s the meat and 2 vege?
Sounds like a recipe for Wogistani vegans!

Surely the Heart Foundation cant be that far out of touch? Low income parents probably don’t know what couscous, hummus, sushi and chickpeas are!!
Vote:If they’d said “Big Mac supersized” or “three piece pack with large fries”, they’d certainly get it.

I see 5 and 6 year olds at my kids school with sushi and celery for lunch every day.
The problem of course occurs when the parents don’t eat it.
There is no inbuilt craving for junk food in children, they follow role models.

How often do you pack a kids school lunch DPF?

What the fuck is wrong with this country?
Kids lunches- A nice sandwich, an apple, a little red box of raisins and a yoghurt. (And I don’t even have any kids)
Fucking hummus…God fucking help us!

I like hummus
I’ve yet to meet a person who’s actually eaten hummus who doesn’t like it.
The traditional kiwi cuisine (if you can call it that) of meat stewed in it’s own fat & dairy coming out of your ears tastes alright it’s true. But it’s funny how my dad had his heart attack in his 50s, my uncle had his heart attack in his 50s, and both my granddads had their heart attacks in their 60s, and we just accept this as normal…
…and continue to fry copious quantities of c-grade meat in its own fat because it’s more or less the tastiest thing that you can cook easily even if you only have minimal skills.
Actually it’s not very funny at all.
Until I married a vegetarian I was happily perpetuating all that. Now, I eat meat about once a week, the grocery bill is half what it would be if we were all on meat & 3 vege every day, and I feel so much healthier

This is absolutely bizarre, and is a great indication of the fact that in some cases the ‘do gooders’ are so out of touch. The people who are making these ‘suggestions’ appear to be residents of affluent suburbs, are well educated (probably university), and are in posotions of both influence and leadership.
Perhps THEY can afford the things they describe (and good on them for being able to do so), but a dollar to a donut, that they have never actually lived in poor areas, they have never had to value money in respect of how many cartons of milk the food money will buy, and they have never had to actually purchase the thing they suggest when on a micro-sized food allowance each week. What’s Hummas worth? $4? two cartons of milk- if you are lucky and even HAVE $4.
The ‘Five a day’ campaign was bad enough (and it was expensive enough anyway), but this is absolutely ridiculous.
Surely SOMEONE has to point-out to the Foundation that they have absolutely no idea about the realities of the world. The Heart Foundation would IMHO, get more traction and respct if they actually got off their butts and provided this ‘food’ to every child in New Zealand, on a daily basis and in perpetuity – they appear to be prosperous enough to be able to do this
THEN, we would probably be hearing a much-more realistic, tune, and have a diet that is actually affordable and available. TO EVERYONE!!
Sadly, I am not holding my breath that this will happen.

@RRM – I dislike hummus with a passion – horrible yucky stuff! Personally I like meat, I like the fat on meat, and all that goes with it – but cooked properly not like they did in the 50′s and 60′s. – but don’t care that you don’t eat it often or even at all.
As for the Heart Foundations recommendation, my kids would go hungry rather than eat that stuff – I know we’ve tried to feed them it (well not hummus, I’m not that cruel).

They have a lovely fatty Banana-Chip shake- Make sure you ask for the extra Whipped Cream.

Fuck. My kids would have called the lawyer and asked for a divorce.
computer saying GIGO. If we were meant to be rabbits we would have had 4 legs, a fluffy tail and lived in a hole, all the time rooting like a rabbit.
Thank God for that narrow escape. Could’nt hack the pace with all that rooting.

I know it’s been a while since I was at school, but unless they have refrigerated lockers or something similar, the thought of sushi sweltering in a bag or lunch box half the day doesn’t sound very safe to me.

I have a 9 & 11 year old we try and ensure they have good lunches (that includes sandwiches [sorry], fruit and the odd treat). Nine times out of ten most of it comes home or gets eaten after school because surprise surprise they are running around like loonies at lunch time. They are just too busy to eat and getting plenty of exercise has got to be a positive.

I would go to Maccas a lot more often if I could bring my 2x vegetarians with me V2!
And if I think back to my high school days, there was always that vegetarian chick in the group who prevented you from going to Maccas or BK when you were in town..
If fast food chains want to attract new customers, adding decent vegetarian options would surely do them more good than inventing yet another “beef” burger that is ever so slightly different than all the other ones?

My 12 year old and I make a batch of hummus most weekends. Love the stuff, its cheap as chips, and so simple to make.
Dried chickpeas from the bulk bins, soaked over night. Bit of finely sliced lemon skin, some fresh garlic, oil, blend until smooth. Goes really well with the fresh pita from the local farmers market.
My point is…
SOME fucking parents are stupid and lazy. My 12 year old can do this in his sleep, along with make a Bircher Muesli from scratch by himself. A little effort, sod all cost, done. Weve grown lazy.

Well some of those things are a bit silly, but sushi is actually a big hit at the mid-decile school I teach at. A sushi shop opened up just round the corner between the dairy and the bakery and we have a real problem keeping the kids from all sneaking out at lunch to buy some sushi. There’s talk of doing a deal with the owner to get some being sold in our tuck shop.

Still if you put that lot on a plate, my two (4 & 7) would polish it of between them no worries, even if the older one would demand red sauce on it.

There’s a distinct possibility that inverting the “Food Pyramid” would be better for us.

Back in the forties we were just given a couple of sandwiches with something spread on them plus some schools had apples and there was milk in schools for a while as well. If you wanted anything else to drink you just had water from the tap.
Vote:Everyone was healthy enough. I was 45 years in the workforce and I always took sandwiches for lunch and drank tap water .I also had a banana and somtimes an orange or a peach or an apple. . Occasionally I would shout myself a pie as a treat.
Healthy food at no great cost.
