2 to -2

September 9th, 2013 at 12:00 pm by David Farrar

The Herald reported:

Seven to go. Emirates Team NZ lead 2 to -2 in the 34th America’s Cup.

But, okay, Sir Russell Coutts and Larry Ellison, you can take a bow now. That was all that was promised.

Maybe there should be medical disclaimers: you know, ‘Doctors warn that watching the America’s Cup can be hazardous to your health’.
It’s difficult to remember (possibly because there isn’t one) an America’s Cup this tense.
In race one, we saw the previously unseen – lead changes. Two of them . Count them. There was aggressive sailing from Oracle Team USA skipper Jimmy Spithill, nail-biting near misses and enough to know this is going to be a close-run thing.

These two boats are close in speed and close in the skill that sails them. When Team NZ seemed to be in control, Spithill struck. Barker rounded the bottom mark close to the actual mark to choke Spithill and OTUSA off.

He lost impetus, OTUSA pulled off a slingshot move round the outside, gaining advantage and momentum. Later in the third leg, upwind, the USA team tacked aggressively, wresting the lead off Team NZ. But Barker struck back, with Aotearoa’s expected upwind speed a boon, and tacked back into the lead – establishing the control that led to a 36s win.

That was like a race of old. Actual race tactics, rather than just being about the best design!

Race 3 and 4 will have occurred by the time this appears. I’m on a plane at the moment! Hopefully now 4 to -2.

The next races are:

true if you’re a desperate fanboi like Lewis. I’ve found the couple of races I have watched to be of mild interest, with moderate levels of excitement or tension.

These saddos didn’t really call their taxpayer-funded toy ‘Aotearoa’ did they??
And just when I didn’t think I could detest these pampered rich kids any more…

C’mon Zapper- Even a drooling fanboy like you must admit that ‘Aoteroa’ is a lame and rather tragic name..
Are you going to break into Maori song and prayers with the rest of the sycophants once the Cup returns to New Zealand??

Longknives – tax payer funded? all 100 million+?

The govt has been repaid their “investment” in GST and PAYE. Get over it.

The name of the boat does nothing for Dime, but im loving the racing.

Definitely not a drooling fanboy, longknives, but I also don’t look to pour cold water on everything as my first reaction.

As for the name, a bit lame but hardly important in the grand scheme of things. Winning it and getting it back to Auckland will be good for New Zealand and might just see the America’s Cup become a decent competition again.

I’m sure you’ll be here telling us just how stupid/boring any event will be.

I’m liking the technology of the boats. They’re seriously fast, and that’s very cool. And the racing has been close and interesting. Yes, still rich boys toys. And I can get as much fun watching racing skiffs. But you’d be a bit of a grumpy shit before you’d try to maintain an argument that it’s boring.

The America’s Cup became a whole lot more interesting when that joker died in the Swedish boat accident. As in Formula One when you are racing on the edge and you make a mistake or have gear failure you can die. Never had that before in any previous America’s Cup because these boats are unbelievably quick.

I went to SFO for the 2nd week of the LV Cup (I am not a wind bludger!) and found it fascinating that the majority of San Franciscans I spoke to were supporting Emirates Team NZ. And NZ the country had a huge profile in that city because of the yachting and other promotions in general.

The Hooerald is breathless about yacht racing.

Yeah, the cup can bring on narcolepsy.

The people of San Francisco have got it right: yachts may be fun to race, but they are tedious to watch. OTGO, I heard the San Franciscans hope NZ wins, so the catamarans will go away.

Actually Jack5 that’s not quite correct. The San Franciscans think Larry Ellison is an arse.

    Jack5,
The racing is not boring, the MSM leadup is where the boring shit is. If it is hazardous to your health then switch your fucking TV off, and go back to what you were doing in bed

Why does everyone want Team NZ to win and bring it back to Auckland. Why not take it somewhere else, personally Lake Taupo seems like the best idea. They have to build a village anyway so why not take a more unusual route away from the usual Auckland hassles and let all the tourists get a better idea of what New Zealand is about.

    * Note I don’t live anywhere near Taupo so theres no self interest in my claim.

fantastic days racing, man and machine at the very cutting edge of technology
a lot of pissing and moaning on here of course
OH NOES THEY CALLED THE BOAT AOTEAROA!! the thinly veiled racist sentiment of Longknives finds its deserving home in kiwiblog the McDonalds of the NZ blogosphere
a welcoming home/hole for ignorance and stupidity and a fairly revealing glimpse of the entrenched rights feeble worldviews
