I’m confused- Meteria Turei and co are always telling us that the ‘Sacred Herb’ Cannabis is a “harmless drug” and does nothing but good for the Maori community…

Maybe I’m showing my age, but WTF? I often wonder what visitors to the country make of us with our public service announcements not to “drink and fry”, drive drugged (yes, it seems we’re all on P or something else) and so on.

Rich Prick – I hear you. Even as a returning New Zealander (after a few years overseas) I find it quite odd that a huge percentage of the ads on TV are government nannying. The following is just a list of some I can recall: don’t smoke, wear a seatbelt, don’t drink and drive, don’t drink and cook, don’t take drugs and drive, be more active, wear a life jacket, don’t slip in the shower, don’t discriminate against the mentally ill, don’t fall off a ladder, don’t let your house get so messy that you trip on toys and fall through your glass coffee table.

But this government was going to outlaw government nannying. :)

    I’m confused-

    Not surprising.

Let me put it simply… you know when you go to the pub, get shit-faced, and then call a taxi to take you home? Replace “pub” with “dispensary” and “shit-faced” with “blazed”.

The only institution that considers Cannabis to be sacred/tapu/taboo is the justice system.

Users of Cannabis view it no differently to how alcohol drinkers view liquor.

    Dispensary? Don’t you mean tinnie-house.

In the mean time, pay your fines, don’t climb a ladder with a tin of paint, don’t slip in the shower, make it click, don’t run over your kid on the driveway, gamble responsibly, smoke outside, don’t smoke in the car, don’t let your kid pull the kettle cord, fit smoke alarms, check their batteries, tell your teenager not to drive upset, take the stairs, eat 5-plus a day, fix your leaking tap … arrgggh.

    Crap!

Health take a dim view of it. Education takes a dim view of it. Employers take a dim view of it. Sports bosses take a dim view of it. Parents, and I mean parents – not people ‘with kids’ – take a dim view of it. Religions take a dim view of it.

    Crap!

Most men over 40 have given their 6-10yld sons mouthfuls of beer from their glass on periodical ocassions. There is nothing wrong with that – as doctors who are fathers attest to other males!

Druggos DO NOT give their 6-10ylds drugs! [don't give me 3 examples]

Harriet: Well said. On a wider level, I am from the generation which grew up thinking cannabis was a harmless drug…Even your body told you so: didn’t matter how stoned you got, as long as you got eight hours sleep you were right as rain in the morning…no hangover..must be OK, right?

As time has gone on, it has become more and more evident that cannabis is NOT harmless…to the point where I am now shit scared of the reality that my children – the oldest is 12 – will eventually start smoking it…

What can I say to her? “Dad did it, but now we know lots more about it, and I am telling you it’s really dangerous for your future well being to do what I did?” That’ll work…

Alcohol is a drug Harriet. If you give your child alcohol, you are giving them an intoxicating, recreational drug. It may be custom to accept this, and I would agree that a mouthful of beer is not the equivalent of toking on a joint, but it is questionable whether there “is nothing wrong with that”. Given our high rates of alcohol abuse and our drinking culture, it is worth questioning whether it is appropriate to normalize drinking alcohol with young children. This is especially so when the kid might only have a mouthful, but the parent is consuming much more than a mouthful, and thus setting the example to the child.

Even worse, it is this advertising revenue that helps to keep these Marxist propaganda outlets afloat.

Another instance of the National Party not doing what needs to be done to suck this country back out of the socialist quicksand.

If they had a strategic clue they would refuse to use taxpayer funds to prop up TV1 and TV3 and or any other media outlet in NZ. They never do the Nats any favours anyway so why not cut off all funding right now?

Taking a dim view of something vs hunting down and forcing a taboo onto other adults, is not the same thing.

And I forgot, the advertising agencies that make these irritatingly smug commercials, with their style always underpinned by the belief that we all think like progressives.

Just cronyists, and if the Nats were true to their damn principles its another group they would severe all connections with.

We don’t need it, and we sure as hell don’t need it when we are damn well paying for it..!!

    @ Camryn

Don’t hurl your nephew into a book shelf.

I would seriously love to know how much is spent on PSA’s by the government every year – it has to be in the 10s of millions judging by the shear number on TV. It all seems to add up to the goverment propping up a broken-arse film/televsion/acting industry by stealth on the taxpayers dime.

Having said all that – at least the blazed ad has stand-alone entertainment value, those kids are great little actors.
