Monday Motivator – Misty Morning

Monday Motivator 20

Misty Morning, Lake Tarawera, New Zealand

I have always liked the pure simplicity of this photograph – just a jetty protruding out into seemingly nothingness. The ‘nothingness’ is actually mist which was low and heavy across the lake that morning allowing me to shoot the image without the mountains in the background.

Click on the image for a larger view of this photograph or on this link to see it as a poster print.

Cheers

Great pic, the sort of thing FX guys spend a lot of money trying to achieve in studio

You did well – I lived in Rotorua as a child, and once spent a whole summer at a house out at the end of Tarawera Road, never saw a mist on the lake.

Interesting choice to take a photo of nothing though, at a lake surrounded by forest and with a high volcanic mountain on the far side!

I’ve always seen Mt Tarawera as a very brooding and menacing mountain. I guess some of that is its history but a lot is also its unique shape when seen from across the lake – very squat and menacing with the three peaks.

Richard, whereabouts on the lake is that jetty? I think I know most of them, just cant place that one, probably because of the mist.

thor, completely agree. Our place at the lake looks right across to the mountain and its never ‘pretty’, more brooding and dominating. That said, when the lake is like glass and not a cloud, its heaven on earth.

Wish I was there now dammit :(

    Hi hmmokrightitis.
This photo was taken a few years ago from one of the jetties to the right of the main car park. However I was back there recently and I think they have either replaced this jetty or ‘upgraded’ it to such an extent I didn’t recognise it. Maybe another case of something caught in time that is no longer the same…
    Thanks
    Richard
