First!

Someone needs to tell Hone Harawira that prefacing an apology with “if” (as in “”I want to sincerely apologise if my comments on Backbenches may seem to have minimised the gravity of the situation…”) is not a sincere, unconditional apology.

I make plenty of mistakes, so I have plenty of experience in apologising unreservedly. If Hone needs some help, he just needs to get in touch 😀

David Cunliffe said on Q & A that Capital Gains Tax was the “single biggest change to New Zealand tax policy in decades and it’s one that I’ve personally championed for years”.

Except his claims of $4-5 billion revenue aren’t supported, Labour’s numbers are three years out of date, and they don’t even mention or list Capital Gains Tax on their Policies or All Our Announced Policies websites.

This has been Labour policy since 2011. Labour uncertainty on Capital Gains Tax.

Have to say Kimbo I was REALLY impressed with the handling of the Malaysian matter yesterday. Key played that one very well.

It would have been extremely wrong for McCully to comment, and Key could not comment, without appearing to be disloyal to his colleague. Any comment blaming the victim would have worked against him, for the reasons we discussed yesterday. And if he had come across talking about rape culture etc, he would have risked ‘doing a Cunliffe’.

The person that did comment had to be senior enough for it to look sincere. And soft and caring enough for it to appear as concern for the victim. A female was best to do this. He could have used Collins, but as MOJ she cannot be involved, and I don’t think anyone could ever accuse her of being ‘soft and caring’ in her demeanor.

Paula Bennett (who is looking very healthy these days) was an excellent choice. What she said was perfect.

So, kudos where it is due. Nicely played National – you saved the swinging vote with that move.

Just to put a cat among pigeons….

The similarly aged daughter of a close friend, said of Billingsley last evening : ” Do not let the lip stick, dress, and looks fool you. She is a lesbian.”

Well, well, if sustained (I have seen reports to similar effect), what a contrast between Billingsley and her “mentor”, Logie. That is unusual because, our friend’s daughter said, “like attracts like”.

Of course none of that excuses any attempted rape, but it may explain her recent actions and comments.

As a taxpayer I am totally pissed off with the Malaysian Govt.

A few weeks back they lost an airliner, you will recall. Well you and I as taxpayers fronted up with more than a few dollars and personnel and aircraft to look for the missing plane.
Our thanks for that decent gesture was to have them to tell our police and Govt. to get fucked and recall the slime that perpetrated this crime so he could avoid being held accountable.

Perhaps we should stop hosting Malaysians in our Universities both of whom who are the beneficiaries of our never ending taxpayer generosity as we help educate them as we have done for 50 years or so.

Would we miss them, probably not as there are plenty to take their place.

Still most of you would rather pay the taxes to prop up these incompetents. Wouldn’t you.

I suspect because it very well could be one of the major defining issues of the election.

Rape culture has become a widely discussed issue this year – especially considering the ‘busters’ incident. Then we have Cunliffe’s apology regarding abuse, said at a women’s refuge centre, and now the rape victim speaks out.

Some on the right are fishing around trying to make it political, going so far as to say she engineered the whole thing, just to have a go at the government (I kid you not).

On the left, they are encouraging the victim to speak out about the ‘injustice’ from National.

In the middle you have the swinging voters. They are the voters that actually decide who the government will be. They’re voted both National and Labour over the years, changing their allegiance depending on the issues involved. They turned on National, supported Helen, turned on her to Key, and are now looking, after a two term govt, at their next vote.

These people aren’t die hard supporters like you. They will switch if they don’t like what they see – and National coming across like they are blaming the victim of sexual attack/home invasion is NOT going to win their vote again. If that sort of attitude is displayed by the right – it reconfirms what the left has been accusing them of, that they simply don’t care about Mr and Mrs Average Kiwi.

The media know what is at stake with this issue – and they are feeding the frenzy. National I believe if they continue to play it how they did yesterday, will come out on top – but they (and you lot, as their supporters) have to be VERY careful about how you go around shooting arrows at this young woman.

Apart from the fact that the introduction of a CGT would spawn a massive tax avoidance industry (think of all those extra tax lawyers and accountants), the supposed revenue of $4-5 billion is sheer fantasy.

I’ve not been able to find numbers for Australia, but CGT in the UK generates revenues of only GBP4-5 billion a year in an economy that is 15+ times the size of ours.

Cunliffe talking bollocks again? You betcha!

I would have thought that the central point of Ms Billinglsey having gone media public with her allegations was that she has now wilfully compromised the case against her alleged attacker. If the Malaysian government decided not to send the diplomat back to face the charges because they now believe that he cannot get a fair trial here, will this play into the Greens’ hands- will they be able to then point the finger further at McCully and put further blame on him- and by association John Key? “She cannot get the justice she deserves because of his (in their view) incompetence?” Is that the situation that the Greens have attempted to engineer by encouraging this young woman to go public?

Billingsley would get ripped to pieces in court . . . she is a manipulative, left-wing activist, and I doubt if, after her pedigree and allegiances are made known, she would convince a judge to proceed to trial. I don’t know if it will result in an attempted murder charge but there seems good grounds for it. It was a vicious gutless attack that was reckless at least, and must have been intended to inflict serious injuries at a minimum.

Yesterday Tom Jackson said “Yes, for if it were not true, our society would be awash in violence, and it is not.”

We could quibble over “awash” but our society is severely blighted by the levels and the nature of violent behaviour.

Actually ‘awash’ may be an appropriate term considering the part alcohol, plays in violence, as it did in this assault (in a liquor store while stealing booze).

The real political influence from Malaysia is the certification for halal.
Halal for all meat processing, and also through many food processing factories.

If certification is held up, dilly dallied with, then it will become real uncomfortable for the NZ factories

Billingsley is entitled to complain. She did so ,and an alleged offender was arrested and charged.
No problem. Police actions as they should be.

But Billingsley knew full well, because she was told by Police, that there was nothing they could do to detain the Malaysian in NZ once Kuala Lumpur declined to waive diplomatic protection. To expect McCully to disregard international diplomatic protection “law”, and to apologise , personally, for failing to do so, is political sophistry of the worst kind. Armstrong reminds us this morning of what Bob Semple once said: ” I am responsible, but I am not to blame” (for failings on the part of McCully’s Ministry, including the female deputy head of the Protocol Division. who infamously did not even tell her Chief Executive.)

Seriously, you over-estimate this issue.
It is not a vote swinger among the great unwashed because it is plain to ordinary folks that all that could be done was done to bring the alleged offender to justice. I have no doubt that among certain people, who regard themselves as “progressive”, or among those that swing left ( to a greater degree according to issues) it is perceived as such. But the reality is that the overwhelming majority know about over-blown media attention.

I have personally witnessed the adverse impact on one woman of the cultural gap between the West (inc NBZ & Aus etc) and the middle and near East. It is not nice, and I witnessed it in the Parliament Buildings, sadly displayed by a member of a visiting Head of State’s entourage.

I suspect that for all their “liberal” tendencies, the media is driven largely by labour and the red melon greens, in seeking to make this the responsibility of J Key and his colleagues. They will NOT succeed because the gfreat unwashed see niogthing to sheet home.

But from Key’s point of view there is a political plus. All the while that this issue is headlined, the media plays little attention to labour/red melon policy – except for the crap enunciated by Little. And National has yet to announce anything of its election policies beyond a couple of tasters.

Yup. A potential banana skin avoided for the moment. John Armstrong’s piece in the Herald is also largely supportive of McCully.

It is really easy to stuff things up with people who perceive they have been wronged in some way and are outraged/annoyed/upset, whatever, e.g. the Pike River families. In some cases the need to go public and take on officialdom/extract as scalp is not just wanting to see justice and accountability done. It is also a form of bargaining in the grief process. Which makes it very human, understandable, worthy of some sympathy, but illogical.

I struggle to see how anyone from the ACT end of the right wing spectrum could properly deal with that. Just take a misanthrope like David “some women are hirsuite” Garrett for example. Do you reckon DG would ever get the point if one were to casually point out that his physical appearance and mannerisms make him look like the combination of a [deleted by DPF]?

The womin appears to be a bit of a honey, which is why honey trap springs to mind.
The last thing she and her anti-Govt, anti- straight white male supporters want is for this to go to trial.
I think the Malaysian Govt upset the plan by agreeing to send him back, and everything we have seen in the last week or so has been a panicked reaction to that – with the intention of prejudicing any trial, therefore giving the Malaysians an excuse not to send him back. This of course will play into the anti-Govt theme.
This is going to end in tears big time for the Left…I can’t wait.

You’re blaming alcohol for violence.It’s not alchol that “fuels” this violence as the wowsers are so fond of blathering . The violence is a symptom of a morally broken and disfunctional society.

We’ve always enjoyed a few beers. We haven’t always witnessed this level of violence.

You can’t even be sure of “a couple of years”. If those charged are actually found guilty (i.e. no problems with identification, etc) what’s the betting we find that they are “only” teenagers, that they show “remorse” for their actions through an appropriately-worded barrister’s statement read to the Court, and that the actual sentence handed down is far short of expectations held by middle New Zealanders?

We have now reached a stage where the “rights” of perpetrators of fairly serious crime usually take priority over protection of ordinary citizens – and the establishment of effective criminal deterrents.

I’m just describing what David Garrett looks like. Which he has no objection doing about others in plain and unvarnished truth rather than keeping his thoughts to himself. And he knows I certainly have no basis to suggest he actually is any of those things (that isn’t sarcasm btw).

a third of all violence
a third of all family violence
half of all serious violence
half of all drugs and anti-social offences
at least 1 in 5 cases of sexual offending

1 in 5 traffic crashes
1 in 4 property offences.

Time for the young man molested by Labour MPs at a social function, attended by Clark, Cullen, Goff, etc. to go public. This has been circulating for too long, and there is best action taken. I hear tell there are some very worried Labourites that have done their best to keep this under wraps. Maybe there is a smell of the Hughes affair here as well!

However, I question if you really have vision from both eyes. You seem to be wrapped up in your own narrative and speculations- I’m also supportive in principle of the 3S legislation. Completely separate issue. Walking and chewing gum – so I’ll ask you to stick to what is fact, rather than speculating (incorrectly) about me thanks very much.

It doesn’t mean I don’t think David Garret is a loathesome person when he picks on the defenceless for cheap political points. And strangely, like the stolen identity matter that saw his Parliamentary career ended, a blind-spot that makes him, in some small way, like the uncaring psychopaths his legislation was targeted against.

My thoughts regarding the young woman & the Malaysian diplomat-
1. Remember that this is an ALLEGED offense so far, the court of public opinion has convicted him already
2. She is well within her rights to speak vocally to the media, however she needs to be aware that her comments may now have reduced the chances of justice either through access to a fair trial, or Malaysia recanting their position to send him here to face trial
3. WTF does the sexuality of the victim have to do with ANY of this? Is it a lesser offense to try to rape a lesbian than a straight woman? Or vice versa?
4. Why the hell does the media expect John Key to speak on the issue and be to blame on a matter that is clearly subject to the courts and a pending prosecution, in areas all outside his ministerial responsibilities (police, justice and diplomacy)
5. The left have unnecessarily politicised the matter which will act in the detriment of the alleged victim- despicable grandstanding for personal gain at the expense of justice.

Kimbo: I suspect you are a young(ish) man…the other day you made a stupid and completely ill informed comment about the closest I had come to PI people was when I was partying late at the office, and the cleaners arrived…clearly being totally unaware of my long connection to the Pacific (I first went to Tonga is 1982). After I slapped you down you made a quick trip to Wikipedia and found reference of my time up there and continuing connection to the region.

At that point any sort of man would have simply said, “I fucked up, didn’t know you know the Pacific well, but I still think you’re an asshole (or something like that)”. Instead you made increasingly risible attempts to claim you knew my history all along and dug your hole ever deeper, much to amusement of some regulars.

Today, still smarting from that whupping, you resort to comparing me to a “concentration camp commandant”, of “having the mannerisms of a paedophile ” (whatever they might be…are you a phrenologist too?) and now “like the uncaring psychopaths 3S was targeted at”… all comments of course delivered behind the shield of a pseud…

You are revealing far more about yourself than you are about me…Sad little chap…

And what’s the problem? – it IS just an opinion I’ve chosen not to keep to myself, in contradiction to good taste and manners, like hairy women. You do look like a concentration camp commander, a paedophile or an aged lesbian.

Address that rather than squealing like a stuck pig when someone calls you out. At least you are getting as good as you gave in the first place – and in your case you deserve it. The person in question you took aim at did not.
