Lance O’Sullivan backs Maori Party

August 13th, 2014 at 2:00 pm by David Farrar

The Herald reports:

New Zealander of the Year Dr Lance O’Sullivan has endorsed the , saying it’s hard to be popular and still do the right thing.

And the Northland doctor, who said he had turned down several offers to stand in this election, was not ruling out a future in politics.

O’Sullivan has thrown his celebrity behind the Maori Party saying he believed compromise was the best way to advance Maori interests, and the Maori Party was best placed to do that. …

O’Sullivan, who also spoke at the party’s campaign launch, cited its willingness to straddle the political divide and its focus on issues such as rheumatic fever and healthy homes as being behind his decision.

“I don’t think a party that’s on the extreme edges one way or another is going to be beneficial for Maori,” he said.

A useful endorsement for them, from someone who does a lot for the community.

There is a huge Maori Party Billboard with him on it in downtown Hamilton. I thought He was running for the Waikato Maori seat. Shame, He would make a good MP, but sadly cannot see local Maori ditching Nanaia Mahuta.

So many doctors are lefties. I think it’s because they develop a distorted worldview from spending so much time with the small minority of people who actually can’t take care of themselves.

I think they call it ‘compassion’ or something. But I’ll ignore the troll and wait for Manolo with the inevitable ‘stone ager’ comment.

I think it’s because they have an empathy for others that rightwingers notably lack.

Hot debate. What do you think? Thumb up 6 Thumb down 22 You need to be logged in to vote

Actually, presuming you are not trolling it is interesting that you associate any profession with being right-wing mearly because they earn a good clip. Completely ignoring or missing the very obvious matter of factness of what a doctor’s primary function is.

The best way to “advance Maori interests” if we’re talking relative poverty and other social ills such as crime etc is the same way anyone else’s interests are advnced.

Go to school, stay in school, study at school.

    Get a job,keep your job.

Stay out of trouble and off drugs.

It’s that simple and applies to all equally.Got nothing to do with race.

    ‘Nuf said.

But how do you explain their brains which leftwingers notably lack?

What’s all this shit about left wing empathy.Again the left control language to constantly cast the right as nasty.

Capitalism is what has raised the world’s standards of living etc

Empathy? Try Mao,Stalin or North Korea for a wee bit of left wing empathy.

Isn’t he just saying that it was better for the Maori Party to be inside the tent? This is what they have been saying all along by being in Cabinet with National, rather than being in opposition and basically irrelevant.

I struggle to disagreee with the idea that if there has/needs to be Maori seats etc then the Maori Party has proven that they are stable and respect the greater picture.

I have enormous empathy for the poor and weak, which is precisely why I am a right winger.
Socialism is cruel to the people it purports to help because the survival of parties on the left requires a good stock of vote fodder. The stock is maintained by keeping people dependent.

Can anyone give me examples of how the Maori Party has actually improved the position of Maori people in society. Is there less crime, child neglect or welfare dependency since the Party was formed? Maybe I wasn’t focused enough and missed it.

If he really wanted to do Northland Maori a favour he would have backed Kelvin. He has the best chance of ridding Northland of the Harawira curse.

And seems they start early, electing to spend Other People’s Money. :

“Press Release From New Zealand Medical Students Association and Medical Students for Global Awareness. New Zealand medical students are calling on the country’s political leaders to tackle unhealthy homes in New Zealand by implementing a warrant of fitness for private rental housing.”

    http://www.scoop.co.nz/stories/GE1408/S00047/future-doctors-call-for-an-end-to-unhealthy-homes.htm

As they say, when the only tool you have is a hammer (OPM) then every problem is a nail. Not a word about educating people to open a few windows, for example.

PS Medical Students for Global Awareness? Really?

I have met plenty of doctors who lacked empathy, and let’s be honest, left wing empathy and compassion is selective to say the least.

But, not the point of the thread.

The Maori Party has been a responsible and constructive support partner for National and I hope they do well in the election, and it’s good to see them get this endorsement.

Lance O’Sullivan is very respected by the Far North and rightly so. Such an open backing in the heartland of Tai Tokerau country will be a mighty blow for Harawira. However, I doubt Hone will show any animosity towards Dr O’Sullivan, given the high regard that the good Dr is holds in Kaitaia.

    And rightly so.
