I don’t think the battle of wits with Herr Schmitz und Greenwald is going to end well. We’ve been told there’s no mass surveillance. So what is the installation at Waihopai doing? NZ has obligations to Five Eyes. I think Key has underestimated his opponents. It may come down to semantics. If signals in are monitored, is that spying on you, or the other chap? If NZ is not listening, is anyone else? I hope so.

If in the process of doing Dotcom bidding, Greenwald discloses that New Zealand spies on trading partner China, for example, and a Chinese reaction then sees trade disrupted as a gesture, is there anything Greenwald, with his stolen communications, can be charged with?

Glenn Greenwald, in an interesting interview with Steve Braunias, acknowledges that he is not neutral regarding mass surveillance and he sides with political parties with similar views.

Different journalists have different views on what the proper role a journalist is. I’ve been very clear that I’m not neutral on the question of mass surveillance. It’s dangerous and I oppose it. I’m supportive of political parties around the world that have made it an important part of their platform to work against it, whether it be the Green Party in Europe or the Green Party here, or the Internet Party, or the Techno Pirate party in Sweden.

But was it really a good call to accept his invitation? Doesn’t it compromise your independence?

Oh, look. Politicians, when faced with disclosures that are threatening to their political power, attack the messenger. This is just a millennia-old tactic to distract attention away from the revelations.

The interview was conducted at Kim Dotcom’s residence in Helensville. Greenwald has been brought to New Zealand by Dotcom.

On whether he has sufficient information to make his claims:

He says he has documents that you don’t have.

I have all of the documents that my source has furnished me. I don’t have every single document that exists in the NSA archives.

Well, let’s call these documents cards. Consider this: Key is going to play a card you have not seen, and it will trump you.

I’m not here to play a game. I’m here to do journalism and to have the truth be disclosed to the public so they can make informed choices about the politicians they want in power. I’m here to report on what the documents I have reveal, as honestly as I can.

But Key says your documents are incomplete.

Well – I mean – you know – there’s always theoretically the possibility there’s some things you’re not aware of that exist. But my documents are very clear. And it’s very hard to imagine there being documents which negate these documents.

Acknowledging the timing of his visit is deliberately coinciding with the election for political impact:

Why are you here, at Dotcom’s house? You must have carefully considered this. Why didn’t you just work with local journalists, as I think you have done in other countries?

I think it’s entirely legitimate for a journalist to think about how to maximise public awareness of the reporting that you’re doing. And I knew that by physically travelling here, at this time, when the citizenry is most engaged politically, that would present an excellent opportunity to bring as much attention as possible to these matters.

Just how likely will it be that the misdemeanor alluded to here will be used by Grant Robertson to blow Cunliffe out of the water if he doesn’t stand down after the Election.
And that is something to ponder: an Election loss is likely to see a homosexual leading Labour, a situation the so-called American style leadership primary discounted as not being yet desirable.

Labour may spend the next term in Opposition doing no more than that term just past: devoting all their time trying to change leaders and renew itself.
May Labour disappear up its own orifarce in the process. 🙂

After reading over the weekend about more of the shocking crime now occurring in this country

and the the execution style killings in Ashburton, it got me thinking that these sorts of crimes are becoming all too common now in “New” New Zealand and the media is almost becoming indifferent to it.

What enraged me about the reporting of the Ashburton murders was that the media spun a story that they were “in the wrong place at the wrong time”

Well, these ladies were killed in a government office, in a normal New Zealand small town, in the middle of the day.

If it is now reasonable to expect that you will be blown away because you are in a government office in the Ashburton Main Street, then you are in the wrong country.

A New Zealand Government could, if it wished, deal with these mistakes in a few compact Acts of Parliament.

And it could then set out on the longer task of rebuilding the married family on which our prosperity, safety, civility and future chiefly depend.

But none of them will. So we are all condemned to be “in the wrong place at the wrong time”.

With Labour polling at 22.4% in yesterdays poll, and with the new revelations of David Cunliffe’s numerous extramarital affairs, I wonder how much more damage will be done to Labour’s result? It’ll probably be lower than English’s result in 2002.

The PM is in good form heading into the last few days of the campaign. He also sledged Hosking about having a hard act to follow when he moderates this week’s final leaders’ debate 😀

Reading the comments above, it shocks me on Kiwiblog that so much of the so called “right wing commentariat” is up in arms about Kim DotCom. Perhaps accusations against the State of mass surveillance needs a better salesperson (say Bob Jones  ) rather than an overweight German, but I cannot believe how people are rushing to defend State spying.

All people that believe in freedom and liberty should be appalled that the GOVERNMENT (note it is not National wanting to put us under surveillance, it is the STATE) If we don’t understand it is the State (not National, not Labour, heck not even Act) that is the in the wrong, we are well on the way towards oppression, as one ancient and hard-fought liberty is slyly removed by the National/labour cartel.

I will put it out a controversial statement – NZ is on the verge of becoming a full blown police state. We already have full scale CCTV cameras being installed in Auckland. Once the hard left (as opposed to the soft left) get into power it is obvious the definition of “rape” will be hugely expanded while double jeopardy protection has already bit the dust. Your “considered opinion” really isn’t a barometer as to how the vast majority of New Zealanders think Penny. People are over Dotcom, and his bizarre conspiracy theories.

You may not have noticed, being so busy campaigning and attending High Court hearings to stalk Cameron Slater (when he isn’t even appearing in person), but every poll in the last week has MegaMana losing support. That’s democracy in action 😀

Key did plan to use Mass Surveillance on Kiwis, however a deal was struck that allowed a member of the Five Eyes to do it for him, in exchange for us spying on that nations residents. Key isn’t lying, but he is being tricky with the truth. Whether Kiwis think that is okay is yet to be decided, but given the standards displayed by many, I sadly don’t think it will bother them. The dumbing down of the population is so complete, they can’t see the implications involved.

However, our PM’s recent behaviour has been disgraceful. Regardless of his personal feelings towards Mr Greenwald, we are in the international spotlight, and name calling and emotional outbursts are not a good look for a leader of a country. Key should conduct himself with class and be respectful at all times. He can still oppose the argument but do so in a manner that is becoming to his position. I realise it takes talent and restraint to do that, but surely that is why he has the top job, because he is better than some gutter snipe – sadly he is not displaying it, if he is.

No, not according to Key. In the weekend he clearly said that he can’t control what other countries spy on but a warrant is required in New Zealand to access data obtained by any means, locally or by other countries. So if NSA gathers all NZ data a warrant for a specific purpose and specific data is required.

How much heat does CO2 mixing with Water Vapour create?
You need to understand that CO2 only comprises 3% of all Greenhouse Gases. You also need to understand that heat does escape, that clouds act as a cooling mechanism. As do ocean currents.
CO2 has been going up but temperatures haven’t.The heats not in the oceans (source Argos buoy system)
So why hasn’t the temp gone up?

I have litle time for Cunliffe and Labour but their copying of the Greens in advocating R&D into renewable resourse is a great idea and Steven Joyce [? was it ] comment about such things always loosing money is just foolish pre-occupation with making a profit in monetry terms instead of quality of life, perhaps even the continuation of life. And reading this mornings headlines from the NYT there is a story about the progress Germany is making in moving away from fossil fuels to achieving sustainability from renewable resorces.

Just because we live on the other end of the earth from most trouble areas doesn’t mean NZ is immune. It is only 70 odd years ago that we were at war with Japan. Yes, they would have invaded NZ if they had got here!! Thank god for the Americans. 🙂 Ask your grandparents if you don’t know what I’m talking about! Not to mention another hideous German who had his sights on the whole world, eventually including NZ. He was thwarted partly due to the British breaking the encripted German codes.

A young NZ man a few weeks ago had his passport withheld to prevent him from heading to a Syrian terrorist training camp.

We need the 5 eyes and GCSB to keep us safe from bad, mad and obsessed people.

Pete, do you seriously wish to keep the argument that they must have a warrant to access data? I wonder who signed Whaledump’s Warrant, or the warrant for the recent Adobe attack which collected data from Kiwis? Wake up Pete! A signed warrant is evidence, turning a blind eye can’t be proven. You cannot defend the indefensible.

The sea ice volume is meaningless. If it melts or grows it will either way have no significant effect on sea levels.
It is the k/m’s thick land ice that is the true thing to keep an eye on. If the doesn’t melt.. good, if it does.. oh shit!

Judith a German criminal is spending millions and millions to try and change our government. He has bought over some people to try and do it 5 days before an election despite knowing about this info for god knows how long. You don’t seem to understand the implications of someone like Dotcom being able to come in and fuck with our democracy in the way he is.

The interview by JK yesterday was spot on and actually a good example of why he is so popular. Your hatred towards him clouds your judgement and you seem to blame kiwis for liking the guy. The fact is he has an amazing ability to connect with normal people with how he speaks (as opposed to Cunliffe who comes across as the most fake politican I have ever seen). That is a good thing IMO yet you see it as bad.

I’m a proven anti-corruption / anti-privatisation ‘Public Watchdog’ who has chosen to work full time on a self-funded basis for the last 15 years.

In 2010, I received a ‘Good Citizens’ Award’ for my services to the community.

I’m not a member of any political party, have no history of violent offending, but have been very up front in trying to expose corruption at local and central level in New Zealand, ‘perceived’ to be ‘the least corrupt country in the world’.

Yet, I have never been able to get a copy of my SIS file (I was named as a ‘subversive’ in Rob Muldoon’s famous SIS list during the 1981 Springbok Tour).

The GCSB will not ‘confirm or deny’ whether or not I was one of the 88 New Zealanders upon whom the GCSB UNLAWFULLY spied.

So Kiwibloggers – I put it to you – if I’m a ‘friend of the people’ but an ‘enemy of the State’ then whose interests are the ‘State’ serving?

I don’t dispute that radical Islam is a threat to our liberty, both domestically, and globally.

However, both Judaism and Roman Catholicism, if you apply their beliefs to the absolute letter of both the Old Testament and Canon Law,

1. Are political as much as they are religious movements.

2. Officially demand the absolute obedience of all to the Torah and the Pope respectively

3. Have the expectation that their faiths will become universal spiritual and political realities.

4. Are prepared to and have historically used force to try and achieve those objectives.

And yet we rightly grant to both Jews and Roman Catholics the wherewithal (with the exception of a few extremists) to live in a peaceful manner among us all.

People are capable of living with ambiguity. As “Islam” covers a diverse range of over 1 billion people I doubt seeing all as the enemy as you seem to imply is particularly helpful.

I think correctly he has National at less than 50%. I seriously doubt National can get 50% on election day. He also shows Labour as still stuck in the mud with their support not growing. If their support doesn’t grow on election day then they really have no moral authority to lead the next government.

A lot will turn on whether the Conservatives get to 5%.

Lindsay – yes, but it’s possible that instead of a late slip in support (as happened in 2011) National may benefit from a late boost due to people wanting to shut out Dotcom and afraid of Labour+Greens. The situtaion is quite different this time.
