Why we do not need a sedition law

Some people may argue that we need to retain a law banning sedition, to cover cases where people pose a major risk to NZ, advocating the overthrow of the state etc.

A quick peruse through the Crimes Act 1961 find many other sections which can deal with actions more significant than a petrol soaked couch competition. They are:

* Treason s73
* Attempted Treason s74
* Inciting Mutiny s77
* Sabotage s79
* Unlawful Assembly s86
* Riot s87
* Criminal Nuisance s145
* Threatening to destroy property s307
* Threats of harm to people or property s307a
* Threatening act s308
* Conspiring to prevent collection of rates or taxes s309

It is great to see Peter Dunne state he will introduce a private members’ bill, if the Government won’t act. It would be superb if all the MPs would give it leave to be introduced, if he does so.
