I’m pretty relaxed about my kids trying marijuana in moderation. Never did me any obvious harm and, like most things, it’s really only bad for you in excess (and I’ve seen folk use it in excess, not pretty, but neither is alcoholism). Far better for them to try it and see it’s no big deal then hanker after “forbidden fruit”.

I will not believe it if the ypick Sinclair over him, how many times has Sinclair been tried and failed. A great at domestic level but hardly a player of the future…
Lou Vincent was picked only at a bit older age against Warne, Lee, and McGrath at the WACA, Williamson is being picked against lesser bowlers on a flatter pitch..

IMO Ingram should be dropped for Williamson, don’t know why he was picked in the first place. And I don’t think Franklin should be in the X1, only an average player really.

I am obviously not as knowledgable as Vettori, Greatbatch and Turner, but sometimes you do have to wonder WTF is going on in the minds of the selectors…

Then surprise surprise after the Directors and insiders have sold their shares at the inflated price they go back to the SX and say Sorry folks deal fell over

One thing amuses me more than anything about the so-called peace process, future generations of Palestinians will reclaim their historic homeland. The sooner the recent immigrants realise this reality, the better.

Others have commented earlier today here in GD about an island lost to global warming’s sea level increases. The stuff.co item says in part . . .
“For nearly 30 years, India and Bangladesh have argued over control of a tiny rock island in the Bay of Bengal. Now rising sea levels have resolved the dispute – the island’s gone.
New Moore Island in the Sunderbans has been completely submerged, said oceanographer Sugata Hazra, a professor at Jadavpur University in Calcutta. Its disappearance has been confirmed by satellite imagery and sea patrols, he said.
“What these two countries could not achieve from years of talking, has been resolved by global warming,” said Hazra.”
and . . .
“Until 2000, the sea levels rose about 3mm a year, but over the last decade they have been rising about 5mm annually, he said.”

So 20 years at 3 mm = 60 mm ; 10 years at 5 mm = 50 mm ; total 110 mm
A 4.33 inch rise in sea level sunk the island.

As for the environment, what other countries do is none of my business and given that I have not been taken in by the climate change con then yes, I could not really give a fuck what they do and nor am I worried about it.

Again it looks like I have to educate you, the government does not have ANY money, what they have is taken from us against our will, like many others I would feel less pissed off about this if they did not waste so much of it.

This stupid wimin has no idea what I had in mind for this plastic bag, like you she sees it as her right to tell me how to live my life without bothering to engage her brain as to why I might have asked for the bag, not one plastic bag goes to waste in my house, we have two dogs of our own and can have up to six or seven others at a time I do not think it takes a brain surgeon to work out why I always ask for a plastic bag when I buy something from the supermarket.

Can’t fault your maths. But relying on stuff.co.nz for facts might be a mistake.

However this quote provides clear proof of global warming, the fact it is caused by humans, its effect on sea levels and the dire future which awaits us all. This person is an ACTUAL scientist.

BREAKING NEWS: David Bain has asked the Government for compensation.

Justice Minister Simon Power said he had this afternoon received a letter from the lawyers for Mr Bain formally notifying of a claim for compensation for “wrongful conviction and imprisonment”.

Mr Bain was last year acquitted of murdering his Dunedin family following a three month trial at the Christchurch High Court.

He served 12 years in prison for the alleged murders of four of his family after being found guilty in 1995.

In 2007 the Privy Council quashed his convictions on the grounds of a substantial miscarriage of justice and ordered a retrial.

“There is a process now to work through and I will not be making any further comment at this time,” Mr Power said.

I collected a whole shopping trolley of food (a weeks shop) got it all on the conveyor and asked for the manager.
when he came I said. ” you are charging for plastic bags to save the environment, yes?”
He said “yes”
I said ” can you please tell me about all this other plastic that you give away with our shopping” and then proceeded to point out every bit of plastic on the conveyor.
I asked him ” is all this plastic biodegradable or is it the same as the plastic bags?”
I asked him ” do you think it is fair for you to give me 6X at least plastic with the shopping but charge me for the miniscule amount of plastic in the bags?”
He said “its a decision at Head Office but I see where you’re coming from”.
I said my goodbyes and left the shopping on the conveyor and went to Pak an Save.

I wonder how many other people pointed that out to them as they’ve changed their policy.

To put some perspective on the building in East Jerusalem from the first link.
During the 19 years (48-67) that Jordan occupied East Jerusalem, it expelled all of the Jews living in what was historically the Jewish Quarter, and literally destroyed every synagogue and the homes of the Jews. When Israel reunited all of Jerusalem, Jews were, of course, allowed to live in any part of the city, and today, more than a quarter of a million Jews live in East Jerusalem. Numerous Arabs live there as well.

In the 400 years leading up to 1948 when Israel was reborn, the Ottoman Empire (Turkey) let the Jews live in Jerusalem and did not expel them unlike Jordan. Similarly they did not destroy jewish history (buildings) as Jordan did and the Palestinian Authority are doing.

There is a reason for that.
They never considered themselves anything more than absentee landlords and the area where Israel is now was not important to them. Indeed they sold as much land as Jews could buy from them. Much of it was marginal land that they upgraded and made into what it is today. It was only when Israel became a state and an official home for Jews worldwide in light of the Holocaust that the Arabs (Muslims) took notice.

There is a reason for that too.
Israel is an affront to Islam and their God Allah.
As long as Israel exists, effectively it says Mohamed was deceived , a charlatan or liar and Allah is not the supreme God Islam says he is.

A HOLE in Alice Springs’ prostitution market could be filled by an agency looking to cash in on a mining boom with its own fly-in fly-out operation.

Businesswoman Julie Partridge, 52, has applied for a licence to set up an agency that would bring sex workers in from Darwin or interstate on a two weeks on, two weeks off roster.

“I am very positive about an escort agency business in Alice Springs because of all the mining activity that is going on,” she told the Northern Territory News.

Another businesswoman said she was approached by an interstate group looking to take advantage of the surge of male mine workers, who spent their working week “in a hole” and emerged with cash to burn and “one thing on their mind”.

She said they were looking to set up a “Shag Bus” in a refurbished Winnebago to service horny clients up and down the Stuart Highway.between Alice and Tennant Creek.

“It’s … the Love Boat but on wheels,” she said.

“It’s quite clever – a new take on the phrase ‘sex tourism’.”

The idea that a mining boom was attracting sex industry entrepreneurs to Alice Springs came as no shock to NT Resources Council chief executive Scott Perkins.

“Well, the mining industry has a long history of supporting local businesses,” he said.

“On top of mining, there are many drilling operations.”

The NT Justice Department confirmed it was considering an escort agency manager licence application for Alice Springs.

If approved, it will be the only regulated and licensed agency in Alice Springs, with the sole existing agency operated by prominent local identity Tracey Randall (aka Minnie Maid) about to move to Cairns.

Rethe Bain compensation claim. If he gets it, he should get plenty: 12 years out of the life of a young man is a terrible thing. But the chances of success must be quite low if he must be considered innocent on the balance of probabilities in order to qualify – reading the newspaper reports I thought there were reasonable grounds to convict (though it has to be said that’s a third hand view or worse). Presumably he has some advantage in the evidence actually discounted in the second case: the glasses and perhaps the FBI expert. But presumably a sound QC will take quite a robust attitude to that. Personally, I think he shouldn’t qualify. But my views are entirely irrelevant.

Of more interest, to me at least, Chris Trotter’s post of 12 March on ECA changes and in particular on pressure to change the personal grievance rules. I have a lot of sympathy with his views. I’ve seen differences with staff. In our own business, they came to nothing. In a relative’s business, a letter from a competent lawyer did the trick. I sometimes wonder how the apparently bad cases of exploitation of process failures come about – the standards don’t seem all that tough. I can’t help thinking that in some cases it may be a matter of good workers who become employers on the Peter Principle. I hope I don’t have reason to count myself among them one day.

And on marijuana. It’s a bit of a lottery, isn’t it? The stories are that lots of people do OK as occasional users, but there are a number in whom it induces severe brain chemistry problems destroying their lives. The same can be said for alcohol and heroin. But P seems to be quite a different issue, with no suggestion that there are any significant numbers of users who continue to participate meaningfully in human society. Where do you draw the line? I think it’s a fairly rough cost / benefit trade-off. The costs of prohibition generally outweigh the benefits, especially if there is some reasonable attempt at education and economic deterrence (consider nicotine). I’ve always considered alcohol OK on that basis, though I can see the argument re RTDs. Similarly marijuana (especially given that it grows well enough to be a problem noxious weed in some areas) – I’d be open to argument on the potential cost of disrupted lives, but alcohol set the bar pretty high. But with P, the apparent benefts of prohibition are enormous even compared with the high and nasty costs of prohibition (including at least one dead Police officer – a hero in my view). Phil U’s views on the matter are of particular interest – hasn’t he mentioned in the past that drug use has had a dramatic, negative, and regrettable impact on his life.
