Poor inmate health ‘costing society’

The poor health of prisoners in New Zealand, including untreated addictions and disorders, drives a cycle of repeat offending that has a rising cost on the society, an independent report says.

The committee’s report, Health in Justice, has been described by prison reform groups as a damning censure of the current system that leaves prisoners in poor health, which has a direct link to recidivism.

The report cited a study that found 89 per cent of prisoners had a lifetime prevalence of substance abuse; 52 per cent had lifetime psychotic, mood or anxiety disorders; 60 per cent had mild to severe personality disorders.

The recommendations need to be applied to criminals and potential criminals before they get to the stage of imprisonment as well.

Page 104 of Into the Darklands tells the story of a violent criminal who from age 6 was sodomised by his dad, the commentary was until this was dealt to he wouldn’t heal nor progress into a contributive member of society if ever.
Whilst he may not be typical of all offenders, it does point to origins of rage and anger that drive behaviour.

That said I am not saying that it is an excuse but we mustn’t ignore it and the reality is we do want people to be whole and be able to contribute positively to our society.
I agree with Pete, we need to get to them before they end up in prison, preferably earlier like 5-12 yrs if possible.
Prison is sadly going to be far too late.

How we do intervention with our human rights culture and them liberal wishy washy crowd is going to be hard yakkers, but it needs to be done.
Knee jerks like making every parent who gives a smack for correction if the kid needs it, isn’t going to help.

The problem is that you’re off on a tangent.

Too many people couldn’t give a shit about what pinkos say, they do whatever they please which often involves crime, and they often have psychiatric problems that make this more likely. Having had a crap upbringing can be a major causative factor for both crime and health problems, but not an excuse.

Perhaps the academic who did this study should have used her university students as a comparable control group, I doubt that the findings would differ greatly. The difference would be in the eye of the beholder.

It is a very strange political and scientific situation, in which vast sums of money are underwriting a bureaucracy of climate accountants and auditors, and in which academic funding is easier to obtain if you put man-made climate change at the top of your research proposal. I have never seen anything like it in the 40 years of my scientific and environmental career

Interesting article on the GW. I’ve almost given up on this problem/debate as it seems intractable–both sides are bedded in well and truly now. I can definitely believe the political side to climate science, or any science for that matter — science is not immune from politics. One example is superstring theory–basically, in certain US universities it is hard to get a position unless you support and research superstring theory, despite the fact that over the last 20 years or so it has failed to demonstrate itself as a useful testable theory.

But we also shouldn’t neglect the fact that it’s actually becoming quite cool to be an anti-AGW scientist — you get a lot of publicity by the willing public who by nature would prefer not to do anything that would inconvenience/cost them, you can get funding through numerous oil-corporate lobby interests, and if you write a book about it, you could be famous.

It’s notable that this guy is a generalist– we’re taking it on his word that he has understood the various specialties which he makes pronouncements on. And let’s not fail on one of the classic fallacies that because there is doubt there is no truth.

As could be expected with something as large as Work for Families it has resulted in positive and negative effects. The positives – especially their potential flow-on effect, shouldn’t be ignored.

* 8100 more sole parents working due to in-work tax credit.

* 9300 more partnered parents staying home with the children.

I would hazard a guess that this demographic is also the largest tax base in NZ – being flush with young couples doing well in their careers, setting up entrepreneurial businesses etc. all the while, paying tax through the nose to support the useless bludgers, sucking on the DPB & dole tit and welfare for families leaches.

National “conferences” have long been PR exercises. So yeah, what Fran and Whale reported it is not news either.

Key and National – practical governing with majority support. Most of the significant minority is to the left, some of them are vocal but often it seems to be voicing what they think is expected of them rather than what they really feel – many of the left group shouldn’t have major worries about how things are going anyway.

And there are a few idealist “fix”-everything-now rats and mice.

Who says it is a “debate forum for the right”? Some from “the right” seem to claim it as their rightful place as they don’t have anywhere else that is worth debating. But as far as I have seen DPF lets just about anyone comment and debate here – he even tolerates some “from the right” criticising him and his preferred party. And tolerates some “from the right” continually trying to promote other parties that have as much popular support that you can count the percent on your thumbs.

So far he also seems to tolerate some who “some from the right” call “from the left” calling bullshit on “some from the right”. And I think he could also spot the obsession. Who keeps preaching radical change? Crusader Hypocrite.

He thinks he does, but Redbaiter is one of the most easily and frequently underskinned here. He makes much more sense when he posts what he believes (as he mostly has lately) rather than trying to follow some theoretical mode of attack that just seems to self detonate.

Dementia patient in jail over ‘three strikes’ case

A 69-year-old with Parkinson’s disease and mild dementia is in Rimutaka Prison awaiting a “three strikes” offence hearing, as neither his home for the disabled nor his family will take him in.

His lawyer, Michael Bott, said the situation was “repugnant” and warned that prisons would need to include wheelchair ramps and zimmer frames in new shipping container cells as people experiencing mental decline fell foul of the three-strikes policy.

Its also possible that other people with mental health issues will get caught up in this process. Now we have disbanded all the facilities that were used to keep these people safe there appears to be no where to go.

There are usually unintended consequences. This is the price society plays for blanket toughness. Do we need secure rest homes?

It’s well known that younger people with mental health issues already get caught up in the criminal system. Locking them up and forgetting them is an easy solution. It’s not so easy when they need two nurses to care for them.
