    The problem isn’t her bringing the dog to work, it’s that the premises have been rented with a no animals clause. She just thinks she is above the law.
    
    I’d love to bring my dog to a workplace – in fact I might go back to my profession if I could. She is toilet trained and well behaved. But if the premises don’t allow it then it’s a no.

      It is doubtful the landlord will lose any sleep over it unless the dog caused a real issue. The Council CEO would recognise this too and not make a fuss as long as the dog is confined to the ‘civic’ areas ie mayoral suite, committee rooms and Council chamber.

No word on whether that strong level of interest was for or against the proposal – form your own conclusion.

Personally, when I hear Kororāreka I always append ‘Hellhole of the Pacific’, which is how the place was known in earlier days.

  Remember that there are crimes in our Crimes Act that specifically refer to gender, but the terms “Man” and “Woman” are not defined.

    Any word in an Act which is not given an ‘interpretation’ is interpreted by by various means such as dictionary meaning, context, reference to Select Committee reports, Parliamentary debates etc. ‘Man’ is no longer mentioned in the Crimes Act. ‘Woman’ is mentioned in various places but is not interpreted. Some of the mentions can only apply to a woman who can bear a child so there would be no real dispute as to interpretation. Other mentions (eg regarding slavery) would nowadays most probably be interpreted (if it were in issue at a trial) to include a person who identifies as a woman.

        Adult is post puberty from a biological POV. Accepted social and legal definitions may vary (a defined age of legal majority, sexual consent etc) but fair to say a girl becomes a woman, a boy becomes a man after puberty. A man can’t become a woman even if they try really really hard.

        Mike – adult is defined independently in multiple laws. For criminality, for consent, legality to drive etc. Whether someone is a woman or a girl is dependent on the legislative definition but is easy to work out.
        
        You are transparent so I’ll complete the argument for you:

        Obvious and completely dishonest question there Mikey. Adult has relevant situational definitions, this is true but female is a simple biological fact (for the sex definition, not gender).
        
        For sex relevant scenarios (women’s sports, safe spaces, biological services etc), your gender definition is irrelevant. To say that self identification is a reasonable definition of female in those scenarios (like the above situational definitions of adult) is to pretend that the male/female separation in these situations is entirely arbitrary (might as well do Maori/Pakeha instead or left handed/right handed etc) and not based on actual biological differences. This is utterly dishonest and ignores both biological fact and people’s lived experiences.
        
        Now, please advise why you think biological women’s lived experiences and biological fact should be ignored and we should instead use utterly subjective self identification? Then can you please advise why, given that the woman determination is under your belief, totally subjective, we should have any male/female separation at all in any area – since according to you, there is no justification for the separation?

  Why is this even an issue in our politics.
  
  The internet has merged the political discussion especially within English speaking countries and has meant that the US UK NZ Australia and Canada now share political discourse. And as NZ is not big that means our political discourse these days is largely driven by what is happening in the US. I am not too happy about that because I think the US has a dysfunctional political system especially at federal level.
  
  NZ is a farming based economy. Most of us have no problem distinguishing between a cow and a bull. Why is this an issue here? We should just be saying “Those Crazy Americans” and ignoring the whole thing. Do we really need to import their political bullshit?

    Added to which Labour have been clueless in policy formation for the past 15 years, so it would have been foolish of Luxon & National to release policy early. Another example was the Early Education Policy. Luxon announced National’s policy in March at the Northern National Policy Forum, 6 weeks later Labour had a version in the budget, and has subsequently spent the last 6 weeks trying to fix it’s botched attempt at policy theft!

■ Labour’s David Parker has admitted he was “disappointed” in the Prime Minister’s decision to kill off a proposed tax switch, saying it was something he personally supported.

■ The Prime Minister [Ardern] has shocked New Zealand by ruling out a capital gains tax not just before the next election, but while she is Prime Minister.
“Under my leadership, we will no longer campaign for, or implement a capital gains tax – not because I don’t believe in it, but because I don’t believe New Zealand does.”
Ardern said the Government simply didn’t have the mandate to implement such a tax, as so many Kiwis were against one.
“I have always been clear that we would not be able to proceed unless we were able to form a consensus – that has not happened under this Government.”

Mana o te Wai statements are already in law.
Are Mana o te Whenua statements next?

Prime Minister Chris Hipkins says he has no intention of reopening Treaty settlements following the Green Party’s plan to “return stolen land to tangata whenua”.
Earlier on Monday, Greens co-leader Marama Davidson said if they are part of the next Government, they would launch a probe into the extent of dispossession due to Treaty breaches and enable recommendations around private land.

Will Hipkins more formally rule this out the Greens demands, or alternatively will the Greens make it a bottom-line policy for coalition?
And is there a so-called journalist with the guts to ask one or the other, or both?
Or shouldn’t National demand an answer?

And the killer clausem on Te Mana o te Wai statements, has of course passed into law.
And that clause as Thomas Cranmer has pointed out –

when you look at section 140 of the Bill you see that there are no parameters, limits or indeed any guidance at all as to what may be included in a Te Mana o te Wai statement. The Bill simply states that “mana whenua whose rohe or takiwā includes a freshwater body in the service area of a water services entity may provide the entity with a Te Mana o te Wai statement for water services”

  National released its alternative to Three Waters some months ago. It’s called Local Water Done Well, and guarantees that local communities will retain control of local assets. It also expressly rules out any co-governance arrangements.         Tony, this has been bugging me. I appreciate your use of the term, even though given in humour. But this phrase is important. As I am sure you used to “live to serve” when you were in Wgtn and probably still do now behind the scenes. Many of our fathers and grandfathers went overseas on military campaigns “lived to serve” and for some it was at great cost.
        
        What is the problem with the current crowd running things in Wgtn is that they do not “live to serve”. It is almost as if we should be serving them. Take the Wgtn Mayor getting her staff to walk her dog for example. For many of us that is abhorrent. But for her, it is a matter of what the people should do to help the mighty ruler.
        
        There are many other examples within the current Labour Govt (and the Greens and Winston First)
        1. Woods not selling his shares
        2. Ardern taking the Airforce plane at all times when better commercial options were available.
        3. Arderns motorcade in her final days was enormous.
        4. ….
        
        What we need is a change of Govt and a change of attitude so Wgtn takes the same approach to you – “live to serve”

    Meanwhile I would still argue that National’s Anser to 3 waters it Is not well publicised, and while most voters Will be aware of propose co governance arrangements, many will not appreciate that Full governance exists with the establishment of the Marie advisory Council which provides over Taumata Arowai, the water regulatorm which in turn prosides over the three waters entities.
    So I would respectfully suggest that the general public is unaware of this. or that National should unravel i.

        I agree with Yvette. The general masses do not know what National’s policy is – but neither do they understand what Labour is going to impose if this continues. I regret to suggest that the average voter either doesn’t know or doesn’t care. This may be due to a) the media’s clear bias and/or b) the continual harping that ‘we must do something with our water services so we don’t get sick and 3Waters is a sensible solution becasue councils cannot afford the massive expenditure needed’. Nowhere in this argument is the price of allowing Iwi to impose conditions on water either acknowledged or publicised.
        If the Coalition of Chaos is returned, it won’t only be water that is alienated from the wider population.

        You have to replace Three Waters with something, because clearly the status quo has not been working; you only have to look at Wellington to see that!. This is National’s proposal in brief form (emphasis mine)
        
        Our plan
        One – National will, in its first 100 days, repeal Labour’s Three Waters legislation and scrap the four mega-entities, with prescribed co-governance, that goes with them.
        
        Two – We will restore council ownership and control, but with stronger central government oversight because we’re not simply going back to the old way of doing things that hasn’t worked.
        
        Three – We will set strict rules for water quality, and for investment in infrastructure, so Kiwis don’t have to worry about sewage on their streets, un-swimmable beaches, or having to boil their drinking water.
        
        Four – We will ensure water services are financially sustainable so that future generations don’t inherit outdated or failing infrastructure. Financial sustainability means there’s enough money coming in, either from rates or from user-pays, to cover the maintenance and depreciation of infrastructure and investment in new assets. We’ll require councils to ringfence money for water infrastructure, instead of spending it on other services. New infrastructure is expensive but has a long life so it’s appropriate that it’s funded by debt, and paid back over time out of rates or user revenues.
        
        Our plan will restore New Zealanders’ confidence that water infrastructure is being funded on a continuous basis, with investment being made when and where it’s needed. We’ll ensure communities get what they pay for. Local Water Done Well is a pathway to environmental and financial sustainability of quality water services across New Zealand.

  What has come out of this NATO meeting is the West is escalating the war with Russia. They are expanding the “sharing” of nuclear weapons at the request of Poland, which has always been rejected previously. This means that any nation with F35 and F16 will have available to them nuclear weapons. This is why Russia has warned that handing Ukraine F16s will mean that they must now assume they could be carrying nuclear weapons, and rightly so for Ukraine is driven by its hatred and is by no means a responsible nation-state. NATO knows that.
  So for Hipkins to provide unwaving support for NATO on behalf of all Kiwis is disgusting and gob-smackingly stupid!

    Newer F-16 models (like the Block 50 and higher) in USAF service are nuclear capable, but the USAF doesn’t have spare ones to donate and no one is suggesting Ukraine will receive those.

      Note too that the only NATO airforces that can use US nukes are the USAF (naturally) and the Luftwaffe.
      
      There’s understood to be about 20 US nukes stored on a Luftwaffe airbase, but under US guard and control, that can be loaded on a small number of Luftwaffe aircraft that have been equipped to handle nukes. But those are Typhoons, not F-16s.
      
      This US-German arrangement dates back to the height of the Cold War, and is unique … no other country has access to US nuclear bombs. Although the Brits share Trident missiles + their nuke warheads with the US.
      
      Any suggestion the Ukrainians will one day get access to US nukes is brain-dead scaremongering.

Social Investment was premised on using already-held data to identify children who were at risk of going off the rails. Through intensive intervention, the goal is to change the child’s behaviours before it is too late. It goes against the current government’s approach of throwing money at problems, and in that regard is novel and innovative. I have seen Sir Bill English speak many times, but never with as much excitement in his eyes as when he talked to a Whanganui business audience about social investment.

My biggest disappointment about the 2017 election result was that English’s plans to roll out social investment across the country were scrapped. But I am excited that social investment is back on the agenda when the government changes in October.

      It happened in my family. Son has mental health issues sometimes.
      When my first Grandchild was born, the authorities took him away.
      A guard outside Mother’s room. Very embarrassing for her. Women make good lifetime friends in maternity units.
      Anyway, family conference with about 20 there spouting bullshit. I stood up and did my balls, really! After about an hour of pathetic excuses and me yelling, we started to agree on things. It was all sorted and the baby grandson was returned. No apology, no nothing. That Grandson is now 23 and lives in my house. It is great.

    While the Government is not a substitute for effective parenting, when parenting is falling so short that a 4 year old barks like a dog, someone has to step in and be an effective parent because obviously the current parents aren’t cutting it.
    The idea behind the social Investment policy was not however for the Government to be the parent, but for the government to use it’s resources to identify at risk children like this and initiate targeted action by qualified and properly resourced organizations.

Bill English was by far the most humble, but also had the clearest vision for how to improve life for the most vulnerable in our society i.e. the children of these at risk families.         Went upstairs in the Mall and bought a Lotto ticket, then sat in the car reading Kiwiblog! The other females turned up about 30 min later.

      If 95 percent of parents in New Zealand got their children the MMR vaccine, there would literally be no measles cases in the country.

        Had all that on the late 50s and early 70s. Vaccines were available I think but when you live is the sticks out the back of Te Kowhai you just can’t go running to the Medical Center. I never had vaccines for both measles, or mumps. I have of course had Polio, Tetanus, Hepatitis, etc.
        Natural antibodies are better than ‘new’ vaccines like Covid. Just a socialist experiment on how far they could push us.

      Sounds like you got hit a lot harder than me and I’m unvaccinated. Contracted it from a triple vaxed family member.
      
      From my experience with friends and family, the “vaccine” doesn’t seem to have any effect. That shouldn’t really surprise anyone. The clinical trials never showed any benefit. How crook you get seems to depend on other factors. Age, weight, underlying health conditions etc.

What are the benfits of having a wealth tax?
* If you are the Labour Party, it appeals to left wing voters.
* If you are poor, there is probably little benefit except of seeing people with more money penalised.
* If you are the NZ economy, it will probably lower the overall wealth of the country.
However, the worst feature is that instead of encouraging NZers to be more financially stable, it will remove part of the incentive.

The ultimate train wrecks. Kelvin Davis, and Labour’s Youth Justice Policy. I hard Davis interviewed on the am Show at 7.20am. It was a gift for National and a train wreck for Labour in Week 1 of the campaign. In summary Davis was clueless, he has been Childrens’ Minister for 3 years, he is angry about the situation, but done nothing. However, this week he is helping to present Labour’s policy.

In a nutshell, Labour are promising to build two new Youth Justice Facilities. That is the sum total of the policy as it is a knee jerk reaction to the events of last month, and Labour polling showing crime/law and order is one of the voting public’s key concerns.

Davis in his interview on the am Show was painful & clueless.

He said:
He was angry about the situation;
He acknowledged the good work done by youth corrections staff;

But when pressed about the policy, he was clueless as:
1. There is no plan;
2. They don’t know what the design of the facilities will be;
3. They don’t know where they’ll be;
4. They don’t know what staffing is required;
5. They don’t know what rehabilitation training/education will be provided; and
6. The don’t know what the budget will be for the programme.

But we know that Davis is angry about the situation, the fact he has been Minister for 3 years and Labour have been in power for 6 years, send to escape him.

Finally, what Davis does know is that they have a Youth Justice programme that is comprehensive in New South Wales.

Give me strength, as we said in 2017, 9 years in opposition and there were no plans for government, now another 6 years in government and Labour are still clueless. You couldn’t make this s**t up.

I might even have put some funds into the pot, to prevent the seat, going to Hone “I won’t let my daughters date a white guy” Harawira. Victorian premier Dan Andrews has cancelled the 2026 commonwealth being held in that state due to predicted high costs of 6-7 billion dollars instead of just over 2 billion dollars budgeted.

What a joke!

Either Victoria is bankrupt or socialist Andrews hates any major event connected with Britain and the monarchy or maybe its both.

  He is lying, in that cost was his planned housing and retail complexes, it was not that long ago NZ could not consider the Olympics because the cost would be 1.5 billion, why is this so costly? I went to Melbourne and went swimming in the pool that was brand new for the 2006 games, perhaps it’s time to reuse some of these outstanding older infrastructure.

France gets the pay-off from featuring Indian troops in its July 14 parade, with Prime Minister Modi sitting alongside the Macrons.

India has announced it will buy 26 Rafale jet fighters from France (plus submarines).

The jets will cost about $10 billion.

For the vast cost of NZ’s Covid money storm, we could have bought 150 or more of these jets, and there would have been Maori in the big parade and the whole Labour Cabinet squashed in with the Macrons.

  The debate is over complicated in my book.
  1. The treaty was signed between the Crown and some chiefs.
  2. Everyone agrees that at least governorship and possibly sovereignty was ceded.
  3. Therefore co-governance is not on the table.

    The Treaty was re-written with the Waitangi in 1975.
    1989 Sir Hugh Kawharu added in Forestries and Fisheries. The were not in the original Treaty written in Maori and translated into English. It is known as the Littlewood Document.
    What we have today is a rogue Treaty, designed to extract settlements forever.

There is no question that the final English draft, written by Busby, was given to Henry Williams to translate into Te Tiriti O Waitangi. The original treaty was not drafted/written in Maori.

        At around 10-12 mins Julian describes what happened. He is not wrong – and neither is my comment. It is clear the Littlewood draft was the final, agreed, english template for the treaty and was given to WIlliams to translate. The criminal act that just happened in our country appears to be a crime where the NZ law is unique in allowing leniency of murder for children up to 10 yrs old when most other countries its only 12 months, and our country has the most lenient term of 3 years max.

UK, Canada under 12 months and Oz 2 years . France dropped their infanticide laws. Infanticide is illegal in the Netherlands, although the maximum sentence is lower than for homicide. The Groningen Protocol regulates euthanasia for infants who are believed to “suffer hopelessly and unbearably” under strict conditions. South Africa refers to abandonment and concealment of a newly born child . There doesn’t seem to be any leniency in Sth Africa for infanticide.

But NZ Law.
“Where a woman causes the death of any child of hers under the age of 10 years in a manner that amounts to culpable homicide, and where at the time of the offence the balance of her mind was disturbed, by reason of her not having fully recovered from the effect of giving birth to that or any other child, or by reason of the effect of lactation, or by reason of any disorder consequent upon childbirth or lactation, to such an extent that she should not be held fully responsible, she is guilty of infanticide, and not of murder or manslaughter, and is liable to imprisonment for a term not exceeding 3 years.”

Disturbed mind also appears to be a wide and vague term and is a much lesser threshold than insanity.

Change the law. It’s sexist , ageist, immoral and not based in science. . If Post partum psychosis is a factor in a murder it should reach the same threshold as insanity in a murder trial. Babies and kids deserve the same protection from harm as adults.

        She had postpartum as well as ongoing mental health issues.she has been in care since she did it, and she will going back there. This is a tragic case for her and her husband. I do hope this case brings mental health more into the light as it’s obvious there is still a lot of misunderstanding and stigma

    And so on what basis should a woman be able to murder her child up to the age of 10 years old with a lesser sentence. It is not linked to birth or lactation at 10 years old. We are talking about mothering of toddlers and children. Why does that require a leniency to murder them. The Mental Health Foundation defines postnatal depression as occurring within the first year. And depression doesn’t get you an insanity defense for murder.
    
    The nz legal review of canada’s law “found that the legislation was deliberately vague in defining
    infanticide, Parliament having intended to ‘set a very low threshold’ in using the term
    “disturbed”.7 T”
    
    “Applying this interpretative approach to the word “disturbed” the Court accepted the
    Oxford English Dictionary meaning of it as “disquieted; agitated; having the settled
    state, order, or position interfered with” and “emotionally or mentally unstable or
    abnormal””
    
    Arguably this law is sexist and originated at a time when women’s sexuality and reproductive processes were labelled as mental health illnesses. Eg. Female Hysteria
    
    Postnatal psychosis is the more serious diagnosis that involves a loss of reality. Arguably postnatal psychosis could be used for a criminal insanity defense to murder.
    
    Why is our law up to 10. What part of being a woman means you need leniency to murder a child. Being a parent is the tough especially if you are poor, sleep deprived, young, have little support, relationship problems, an unsupportive partner.. But we don’t allow this defense for young men. And we don’t allow those factors to justify murder of other members of the public, only your own child. Why do we excuse filicide.

        It does say birth. But then it contradicts itself in two ways.
        
        1. the age of up to 10 years which is obviously not connected to birth. (Law Review Thesis: “It is significant, when compared to overseas jurisdictions, that within New Zealand legislation the age is any child under ten years of age in relation to infanticide, which is significantly higher than that of other jurisdictions researched and does not align with any definition of infanticide. 18)”
        
        And 2. NZ law is unique because it does not require that the baby biologically has to be yours to qualify for infanticide. The words “any child of hers” has been interepreted by courts as any child in your care.
        
        “The term “any child of hers” has been expanded within case law to include children that are not biologically
        related to the offender. The interpretation of “any child of hers” was considered and expanded in the case of R v P.

        In this case the offender had two of her own children, one six month old baby and one eighteen month old
        infant. The offender was still breast feeding one child. The woman murdered a five year old child that was not
        biologically hers, however, lived in her household. In this case “any child of hers” was interpreted to be any child that “in fact, law and common sense, can be said to be hers (due to circumstance)”

The government crashed the ETS carbon price this year by causing uncertainty. As a result, Stuff today:

“Late last year, units were selling for roughly $87 each, according to trader Jarden Securities. Earlier this month, a unit cost just $34.

On one litre of petrol, the carbon penalty moved from 20 cents to just 8 cents.”

That 12c reduction along with falling fuel price would have given the Govn confidence that July was the best, and only, opportunity to reinstate the fuel tax.

I wonder if the Govn crashed the carbon price this year to try and dampen the cost of living crises.

Belgian researchers report that two doses of the Pfizer mRNA COVID jab induced lethal “turbo cancers” in a mouse. Two days after receiving its second dose, one of the 14 injected mice (7%) died suddenly. No clinical signs of illness were present before its abrupt death. Upon post-mortem examination, the mouse was found to have lymphoma in several organs, including the heart, liver, kidneys, spleen and lungs.

The Lancet Censors Paper
As has so often been the case over these past three years, the journal didn’t waste time censoring the paper. Preprints with The Lancet pulled it within 24 hours,4 stating “the study’s conclusions are not supported by the study methodology.”5 In what way? They don’t say. As noted by McCullough, the methodology is as standard as it gets. Will Jones at the Daily Sceptic adds:6

“A number of the authors of the paper are at the top of their fields so it is hard to imagine that the methodology of their review was really so poor that it warranted removal at initial screening rather than being subject to full critical appraisal. It smacks instead of raw censorship of a paper that failed to toe the official line …

Inflation rate down to 6.0%.

Still the highest rate since June 1990.

Robertson used to excuse the rate of increase saying that it was mainly tradables (i.e. imported) inflation.

But now non-tradables (i.e. domestic) inflation is 6.6% and tradables inflation is 5.2%.

Come on Grant, admit you have failed NZers.

  With the quarterly non tradeable/tradeable ratio running at around 1.6 the October figure is unlikely to look very pretty once the impact of this quarter’s transport increases come into play and Stats won’t be able to word play with a “tradeable petrol cost” decline. The only good point is that the current government will probably still be in control on the 17th Oct as a “caretaker” government so might still get to wear the accolades 🙂

The Ministry of Education has confirmed the Education Review Office is investigating the school after the Employment Court ruled six women to be employees, not volunteers, during their time in the community.

The women’s lawyer Brian Henry told Mike Hosking that the situation is tax funded female servitude, and the ERO needs to stand up.

Henry says the women were being taught to be kept separate, and to cook, clean, wash, and sew.

He says this is entirely unacceptable from any education system.”

I thought the job of the ERO included ensuring that the New Zealand curriculum (or an accepted alternate, like the Cambridge or IB) was being taught in schools receiving taxpayer funding.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.), along with a bipartisan group of five other senators, introduced extraordinary legislation on July 13, suggesting that the U.S. government or private contractors may secretly possess recovered UFOs and “biological evidence of living or deceased non-human intelligence.”

There has been discussion earlier today on ‘3 Waters’. A previous poster provided a link to the Te Mana O Te Wai Guidelines for Mana Whenua. I’ve taken the time to read this document and I suggest others should as well. It is terrifying.

Some examples that stand out:

Te Mana o te Wai is a concept that is derived from mātauranga Māori. As such it cannot be defined without the leadership of hapū and iwi in their respective takiwā (tribal areas). These definitions are shaped, by the unique mana whenua (indigenous people of Aōtearoa within their takiwā) who belong to each type of water, of each spring, of each river, of each puia (geothermal spring), of each expanse of ocean.
The way in which hapū and iwi define and implement Te Mana o te Wai will be aligned with the tikanga and kawa of those specific areas.
How hapū and iwi describe Te Mana o te Wai comes from a place of whakapapa and mātauranga, not driven by a national policy statement outcome, so the way in which it is defined within a takiwā may be far more expansive than the limitations of the policy intervention.
Councils will need to recognise that although the NPSFW uses kupu Māori (Māori words) the definitions in the policy are limiting and do not reflect the depth of the concepts for mana whenua. Councils will have to ensure there is flexibility to enable mana whenua to define all terms from their own tikanga and whakapapa.
Without an effective Te Tiriti partnership between hapū, iwi and councils, Te Mana o te Wai will falter. So, in implementing the NPSFW councils will need transform their partnership approach, not merely establish collaborative groups or advisory committees. Te Mana o te Wai requires adequate investment, reframing the infrastructure of council and co-designing approaches with hapū and iwi as part of the solution.
The views of hapū and iwi around their dissatisfaction with partnerships with Council are not new, there are some several examples that are delivering good outcomes, however there are many more examples where the hapū and iwi are feeling marginalised and under resourced to participate effectively.
Te Arawhiti, the office for Māori Crown Relations, carried out 33 hui across the country in 20183. Their report from the hui and submissions saw issues with local government being a common theme. In particular the view that is heard often from local council bodies that they are not the Crown and as such are not Te Tiriti partners. This perspective will need to change if we are to give effect to Te Mana o te Wai. In order to appropriately support mana whenua to define Te Mana o te Wai, a transformative approach to power sharing will be needed, and this will take time to apply across the whole system.

Mauri is a concept that comes from Te Aō Māori. It is not a concept that can be used or defined by those who are not the mana whenua of the waters themselves. We have seen examples of those who are not mana whenua ‘measuring’ mauri where they do not have the cultural knowledge or depth of understanding of mauri and how it fits in a wider Te Aō Māori paradigm. As mauri is a central part of Te Mana o te Wai, local and central government will need to provide adequate resourcing to enable hapū and iwi to develop these tools appropriately.
[It is clear that it will be encumbent on central and local government to fund iwi and hapu so they can tell us what their rules are.]

There are a range of definitions in this section which will be helpful to note in using the NPSFW. However, where there are many Māori words and concepts, we would strongly recommend that mana whenua hold their own definitions and that these should be used instead where mana whenua have identified them.
[Suggests that any definition of a Maori word in the Act can be over-ridden by a mana whenua’s own definition. Potential for endless litigation?]

I try to imagine the impact of this concept/approach being carried over into the RMA replacement. It would effectively give hapu and iwi total control over the land and resources of NZ. And of course taxpayers would end up with a very very expensive bill to resource every hapu/iwi to exercise its ‘rights’ and ‘obligations’ as mana whenua.

Someone tell me that I’ve got it wrong and this will not end badly.

Nurses are striking again, on 9th August. Not for more money, but, for safer staffing levels and conditions.

Currently, many wards are operating at over capacity and nurses are burning out. From what I can observe, the government is replacing local nurses (who leave) with Filopino and Indian nurses.

My thought on this is that NZ has had poor quality immigration for decades, and the taxes paid by new immigrants does not cover socialised costs such as healthcare. We need new hospitals but cannot afford them.

  They still have to settle their MECA agreement. They have been offered 3% which is going backwards with current inflation. Yet, Labour know their is a nurse shortage just won’t do anything to resolve it. Hence we have worse working conditions and more stress on Nurses and Doctors.

  Actually, immigrants are really good value for money, compared to people born and brought up in NZ.
  
  They pay the same taxes as native NZers, but they didn’t impose the same public expenditure costs, particularly for expensive things like childhood health care and 16+ years of primary, secondary and tertiary education.

    Highly educated immigrants with sought-after skills are great value, if you can get enough of them in competition with smarter countries than ours.
    
    However, immigration needs to take into account infrastructure capacity, and economic strengths (or weaknesses) such as a country’s balance of payments, reflecting its external trade with the world.
    
    New Zealand’s wealth as measured by GDP per capita has slipped in comparison with similar developed countries while New Zealand has experienced its biggest immigration surge since the Maori canoe fleet arrived.
    
    Our balance of payments is negative, housing is bad, our health system is in its worst state for three-quarters of a century, our education system is diving to Third World standards, our universities are broke.
    
    How did this shambles occur if high immigration is the economic silver bullet?

Just had a sad situation with a lovely immigrant Asian nurse. She is a fully qualified doctor practised for 6 years in her own country can’t get registered here. Apparently no way of doing some sort of entry exam it seems that have to virtually retrain at great cost. NZ is screaming out for doctors apparently another 1000 in a similar situation. In her opinion simply a mechanism to protect NZ doctors. Much easier in OZ. All her children doing medical studies in OZ. Otago offered positions but preferred OZ as better training. Also nurses leaving in droves going to OZ. All medical facilities in NZ have lack of staff. In the meantime the medical bureaucrats increase in Wellington. What an indictment of this and previous governments and throw in care based on ethnicity its a complete disaster. Can you blame the young and educated going offshore.

  I know a radiologist from Serbia who got herself recertified with some difficulty as a sonographer. Sort of like a university engineering graduate applying to be a mechanic.
  
  Her English was never going to be good enough to pass IELTS 9. I reckon there would be Pakeha NZ doctors who wouldn’t make that bar.

During several trips earlier this year to Twitter’s San Francisco HQ, I ran across internal emails claiming that Robert Kennedy Jr. spews disinformation. Instead of trying to adjudicate these claims—which would likely be impossible—I decided to ask few obvious questions:

How did they become “disinformation experts”?

And on top of this was a two day strike this week from the medlab staff

Nurses have voted to strike again, saying they’re “extremely frustrated at the lack of progress” in negotiations with employer Te Whatu Ora.

Members of the New Zealand Nurses Organisation (NZNO) voted to strike today, chief executive Paul Goulter said, for 24 hours from 9am on August 9.

Te Whatu Ora has not addressed nurses’ concerns, the union said. The vote, organised on Tuesday, came just before Te Whatu Ora made a new offer.

Members will vote on the offer on August 1, and if it is successful the strike will be called off.

Te Whatu Ora has been deliberately holding back data

Minister Verrall just waking up ….

: In response to question No. 8 today, I said that the role of my office was to request that Te Whatu Ora publish the correct data. I have since been advised by my office that Te Whatu Ora reported a provisional date for the data to be released on 5 July, and a staff member said that it should not be released that week due to other announcements. Upon learning this information, I have told my staff that they should not have given that direction, and it is my expectation that it does not happen again. The final date that the data was released was determined by Te Whatu Ora based on when the information was ready.

  Dr Shane Reti is having a fantastic week. First there was the story of his night-time trips with St John crews around the country, and today he had Dr Verrall breakdancing on the head of a pin. It was one of the least convincing ministerial answers I’ve seen for a long time, and he did it with such politeness!
