There are hints that Hide has been given the message from the party to give Garrett the message. The Roaring Forties yet to arrive?

Unfortunately the “Act as I say, not as I do” label will be hard to shake. But something good may come of all this, if Act have a proper cleanout and re-present themselves as a party with a clear vision that no longer tries to pander to populist pressure groups.

Megatron, it’s egg on John Key’s face. It goes to show that loving parents are held in the same regard as this asshole in the eyes of the law and John key. Also, he was suppose to be tougher on crime. Doesn’t look like it. That child was defensless and now is probably scarred for life. That guy should have been thrown in jail. Key is tough on law abiding citizens, but easy on criminals.

I don’t think the judiciary can honestly judge anyone who finds Mr Jared Dennis Garret and kicks the shit out of him whilst he is on supervision.
If this is the sort of sentence they think appropriate for child abuse.
I would find it very hard to convict them if I were on a jury.
Hopefully there are others like me too.

I think that you are not alone in your position but people don’t have an credible alternative.
Which I think is an indictment on us really for if we didn’t vote for them or voted in such a way that we really put the message to them then they might come right.

Sadness is I think ACT may well have blown it.
I realise that Garrett is the target of the MSM right now.
But Hide knew about the three strikes against him and that shows a real lack of judgment as a leader and thinking of real politik.

I still believe that if 10+% of the voters voted their party vote to ACT as a protest vote, that, that would send a message to Key and his ilk as well as the non thinking middle class of NZ, but unless ACT does something like sack Garret I’m not sure they deserve our votes.
Sad day for us.
And it is probably of our making for putting in parliament and regional and local governments the people we have.

Lipo – have you ever tried to control where a cat roams? I used to have a cat that followed me to the shop and to the pub, the only way to stop the little bugger was to get into the car and drive or to leave him inside and sneak out the back door. He was a nice cat though (plus he was free).
It’s all very well saying “the cat shouldn’t have been on the guy’s property” but actually putting that into practise is entirely another thing. Cats can’t be trained like dogs can because they are solitary animals.
Most people are tolerant of animals in their yard, unfortunately in this case this guy wasn’t. Perhaps a $5 bell and collar might have been a worthwhile investment for a $1000 cat then it would have been a bit more obvious that it’s not a stray.

I think one of the Greens problems is that they are too small and the membership has to go through the eye of the te tiritti 1840 (Maori version) needle, which rules out a lot of people. They trade as an environmental party but the position of Maori in their scheme of things is ambiguous (at best); it is Maori who are the rightful owners of the foreshore and seabed (environment) and it is Maori who are the environmentalists (Kaitiaki).

I find domestic animal laws to be on the sunny side of ludicrous. I can keep a cat, parrot, gallah, cockatiel, guinnea pigs, rats stoats, ferrets, mink, and many others in any combinations that can cause minor or major offense with zero legal restraint other than the rather difficult to use laws of nuisance and ill defined animal welfare.
However to have a dog no matter how well restrained, small, inoffensive, I need to have a licence, be subject to many laws as to restraint, housing, cleaning up excrement etc along with the aforementioned nuisance and welfare, and should the little pet respond to intimidation and retalliate with the only means at hand the poor little dog will in all likelyhood be dead before the next sunset with about as much due process as would be afforded a cockroach.
Society allows people to live and rear children in conditions that if applied to other animals would result in court action with substantial penalties but with humans the apologists look for any inane reason to rationalise their behavior and avoid the obvious answers that some people are totally ill-equiped to have responsibility for other humans.

DPF are you bored this morning?
Has John given you the message to clean up your blog?
I may well have strong opinions about lots and don’t use bad language that often but it seems to me to be rather of double standards to now start dishing demerits on the bais of bad language when its not so long ago you actully supported peoples right to use it.
If you have had a change of heart then fairness requires you to let your fellow travellors know, not to just suddenly become someone dishing out some sort of morals lesson.
There are some rather staggering posts made on this blog and one of the good perpectives has always been that we have been free to make those posts and to have them criticised, often very robustly. Is that going to change to?
There has been a a decline in the quaility of the lead posts and that was noted a while ago by others. IMHO if the standard of those post is high then the people blogging will respond likewise.

V2, DPF had signalled his intent to clamp down on abusive language as opposed to bad language. So (as I understand it) expressing yourself with colourful language is not being targeted, but when colourful language is directed at individuals as abuse then it is likely to get demerrited. I think it’s more likely to improve rather than inhibit free expression from more participants.

To deal with the more abusive and disruptive commenters….

How are you going to train a cat not to roam? I’ve already said they aren’t dogs, and can’t be trained like one.
Most people don’t know exactly where their kids are 100% of the time, so how do you expect to know where your cat is all the time? Most people have to go to work and the vast majority don’t want their cat shitting all through their house, so they are let outside. The cat will still come home at dinner time, regardless.

No we don’t. And cats are some of the cleanest domestic animals out there (the dig a hole to shit in, and don’t stink, unlike dogs), and are hardly cowardly considering that they roam – in my experience they tend to explore as much as they can.

YIKES …. just had a nearly perfectly synchronized lightening flash and HUGE thunder clap over my home. The PC’s sound system crackled loudly and the cat has vanished. No lightening holes burnt in the house. Hope the neighbours are ok. Wonder where the cat is?

While that may seem to be the case for the cat owner, in reality it is neighbours like me, who don’t own cats, who seem to always be cleaning cat poo off their lawn, or as so often happens, off my carpet once the kids have stepped in it. Coupled with the danger they pose to small kids (my boy got severely scratched on the face by a neighbourhood cat when he was 1 – amazing how fast toddlers heal thankfully) and you basically have a risk to public health and safety.

Cat owners are primarily selfish, wanting a cat for their own benefit but ignoring the consequences for neighbours. If you live near me you probably want to avoid getting emotionally attached to your cat. Once I catch them on my property they are treated as a pest to be controlled.

One of the cats in my neighbourhood has for months been digging up my garden to crap in, and digging out my plants. I’ve laid some poison I’m so sick of it.
I hope the neighbour keeps it indoors, ‘cos it’ll be in the rubbish bin if I have anything to do with it.

Frankly all I ask is for cat owners not to let their cats poo on my property. In return I’ll ensure my kids don’t poo on theirs. Mind you, you have just given me a new idea for retaliation – emptying my daughter’s nappies on the neighbour’s doorstep when I catch their cats pooing in my property. This promises to be a fun time all round!

Poor Australia – Gillard is pushing for Oakeshott to be speaker. Given his drawn out ‘let me hog the attention for as long as I can’ speech when announcing which party he was backing, I would think having him as speaker would greatly impinge on getting anything done in the house.

If you want an alternative to stopping cats pooing in your garden and digging up your plants without killing it, then adopt a neighbors cat, preferably a male.

Give it a couple of weeks and it will be the only one you see on your property.

The cats are most likely wondering if the owner of the pellets is going to show up!

But seriously, cats LOVE freshly dug and regularly watered garden patches. Any person that has one of these cat wonderlands is going to be a magnet for all the neighbourhood cats.

Your options are 1) Let your garden get overgrown with weeds, 2) Put up some sort of fence or 3) sprinkle something smelly around. If not sheep pellets then powdered blood and bone. Or the ultimate, pressure sensitive water sprinklers … but this is just a dream of mine, I don’t know if such a thing exists.

BL, edited to add that if you have a male cat on your property, then it’ll be the one digging up your garden.

He worked for NJ Transit, a state organisation. He got fired for that stunt on the grounds of bringing his employer into disrepute. Good job, in my view.

But MSNBC Countdown’s Keith Olberman labelled the employer as “THE WORST PERSON IN THE WORLD!”

Like I’ve said before, what passes for “left” in the US would find a comfortable niche in the ACT party!

Talking of ACT, I hear there is another vacancy in their ranks coming up soon. I wonder if ACT will finally return to its roots and offer a genuine alternative economic strategy for us to ponder, preferably one that doesn’t hinge on a simplistic tax cuts policy.

This is a good alternative to an ETS scheme, which seems dead in the water in Australia, but more importantly, we have a serious person in the industrial sector taking a leading role in what must be inevitable: a global approach to climate change.

Luc, serious people in the industrial sector sometimes do things because they see which way the wind is blowing, not because they actually believe that it’s anything more than fodder for useful idiots many of whom:
a) happen to be in positions of power which affect their industry or more usually
b) are shareholders.

It’s called “vested interest” as in:

“Nothing is more vigorously defended than a vested interest disguised as an intellectual conviction.”

The difference between Captains of Industry and your average useful idiot, is that when the Captain of Industry does it, they know it.

First it was ‘Global Warming’, which became ‘Climate Change’, which is now to become Global Climate Disruption. Every time science starts to expose the global wealth-redistribution scam disguised as globalcooling/globalwarming/climatechange/globalfearwhatever .. they change the name. The latest isn’t a great choice though as our historical record is littered with climate disruptions. And then there’s the little problem of hurricanes – the erstwhile disaster measuring stick – being at 30 years lows just now.

Luc the alternative is to cite link after link of learned counter-AGW science which doesn’t mean a thing because no-one cares, by now, since almost everyone has their entrenched perspective.

This is because AGW isn’t fundamentally a scientific issue it’s a political one.

So the world over, we see political not scientific tactics used.
