DG, re: new cars. I disagree.
Went to buy the Missus a used car, were looking for something a couple of yrs old and didnt really care what it was. If we got an ex lease toyota it was 10% more expensive to buy new after we got a decent discount thru work (just had to be gst registered even tho we were not claiming the gst) and with the new car got a 5 yr warranty
Same when I got my Prado, 17% off retail and 5 yr unlimited km warranty and free services.

Colville: Agreed, the five year warranty is a major plus…but with your Prado you might have got 17% off retail but you lost another 15% ish as you drove it out the door…

Anyway, it’s all academic for me…a classic Jaguar which sinks money but is a delight to drive, and “a $3000 jap heap as a “daily driver” until it dies and then get another one” are my transport arrangements…all totally useless without a licence though!!

More correctly it was called deep sleep therapy [DST ] which is prolonged drug induced sleep or continual narcosis. It originated with a Scottish Psychiatrist early last century. It became popular in Switzerland in the twenties then more popular in the US in the 50s and 60s. It is supposedly connected to the CIA programe MKULTRA. It was used in conjunction with ECT.
The Australian Chelmsford scandal Harry Bailey 1962-79. 26 people died at the Chelmsford Private Hospital. In the early 80s the Sydney Morning herald exposed this and there was a Royal Commission with possibly legal action by former patients.
In NZ , this took place at Cherry farm Hospital , Otago and Sunnyside Hospital CHCH , and possibly other places in the N.I.
Greg Hallett believes that Margaret Bazley was involved in this whilst working at Sunnyside as a psychiatric nurse.
The report Te Aiotanga, supposedly was the comphrensive report on our old psych hospitals..It was compiled after extensive interviews with ex patients , family members and ex staff members yet this therapy gets a one line mention. No definition of what it was , no comments from ex patients who experienced it , no record of death or injury and no list of which NZ hospitals used this it. I just find this to be a curious and glaring omission.

I saw Russel Norman on the news last night, during a beat-up piece about asset sales.

His informed opinion was (and I shit you not): “Private companies are profit-making enterprises, so energy prices will probably rise after the sales.”

What?

Yes, once again Norman displays the economic beliefs of a ten year old child: which would be bad enough, but remember he is also campaigning to bring more and more of the economy under the political control of people just like himself.

He could have said something like: “Well, in a competitive market prices are competed down to the minimum profitable level – to the benefit of consumers – so it depends entirely on the competitve framework that’s operating.”
But no. He simply says “Private companies are profit-making enterprises, so energy prices will probably rise after the sales.”

Excuse me, but what a fucking dick.

And that’s not counting the fact that the state control he advocates was used by Labour to impose artificial price hikes; effectively introducing a highly regressive stealth tax which hit the poor hardest; or the fact that it is official Green policy to dramatically increase power prices anyway, by imposing expensive renewable generation.

Are you aware that restrictive covenants were used in the US to restrict where black people could live and this was only outlawed in 1948? Los Angeles has a long history of segregation. Even after the Supreme Court’s ruling outlawing the practice of restricting real estate on the basis of race Los Angeles remained a highly segregated society. Blacks venturing out of their own neighbourhoods would routinely be subjected to police harassment and this distrust between the black community and law enforcement unsurprisingly culminated in the Watts Riots. Yet for some reason you expect black people in Los Angeles to have respect for law enforcement and that they only need “get off their bums and work”.

Of course today the Los Angeles police department has changed significantly along with social attitudes and urban demographics. However, your basic premise that riots are caused simply because some people have a bad attitude is crap. Even as attitudes on race have changed in the latter half of the 20th century the authorities have still implemented policies which have been harmful to the black community, the war on drugs perhaps most notable among them. The war on drugs has empowered gangs in black communities and has disproportionately targeted blacks who offend against such laws despite the fact that white people consume drugs just as much as anyone else.

It is so easy to fall back on the ideology of “individual responsibility” whilst ignoring the realities some people grow up with that are not shared amongst the entire population. These differing experiences result in differing attitudes amongst different communities. Whereas many whites might look at the Rodney King beating and regard the officers as just trying to enforce the law, many others regarded law enforcement in a different light, and for good reason. Because for many blacks law enforcement was the enemy, not merely enforcing rules to protect the community, but rather seeking to protect white people from black people. Right up until the 92 riots the vast majority of officers were white and resided outside city boundaries. It is unsurprising then that the inner city black communities did not identify with law enforcement as serving their interests.

Wat. Totally agree. Just because he has charisma doesn’t mean he isn’t an economic retard. Or a cock for that matter. I have seen him speak and he is quite charismatic. Even Rb might have a hard time keeping from hi fiving him.
This makes me wary and auspicious of his motives. I have more respect for someone like Gareth Hughes who has more substance.
Mixed ownership would seem to be the most successful model as per Air NZ and Telecom.

I found this interesting. This 28-year-old woman, who by her own admission is ‘that go-to girl when you’re after a good night’ and ‘loves a wine to mark the middle of the week, a bottle (or two) of red on a Friday night, a Saturday afternoon session in the sun, a weekend bender, shots of tequila with strangers and casual G&Ts’ decided to voluntarily go on the wagon and give up booze for six weeks.

She wasn’t sure if she could actually make six weeks without alcohol – but she did. In her own words, ‘I’m pretty chuffed with proving to myself that great fun can be had without alcohol. I have saved lots of money and I forgot what a hangover feels like. There hasn’t been a day wasted feeling sorry for myself, apologising for the night before or craving strawberry milk and hot chips. Giving my body a chance to experience a dry life has put me in the best shape of my life – physically and mentally. Maybe I need to eat a teaspoon of cement, but thriving isn’t as easy when you’re dehydrated and depressed after a big night. I have much more motivation and I feel well.’

Now here comes the interesting bit.

‘So if life was all roses without alcohol why don’t I declare myself teetotal forever? I don’t like the idea of banning something from my life. I try my best to listen to my body and treat myself in a way that makes living feel good.

Rise up all and sundry ,fight the injustice and protect the value of personal responsibility against the enforced view of others.

Lets as a community force them to fence THEIR rivers, and plant the banks of THEIR streams at literally Thousands of dollars to the farmers ,those disgracefull bastards who bring in the largest wealth to the country. After all they can afford it,no marchng in the street for those who work the land,they make every New Zealander a victim in their quest to destroy our country at every turn.

Reject austerity and embrace “growth.” Hollande stresses he will end the current austerity efforts imposed by outgoing President Nicolas Sarkozy and the European Union (actually, France hasn’t cut spending at all – French government spending has grown every year from 2002 [€816 billion] to 2011 [€1.1 trillion].) If that’s austerity, can’t wait to see what Hollande will bring.

Hollande wants €20 billion in new spending over five years. He also proposes hiring 60,000 new teachers, 1,000 police a year, and addresses youth unemployment by creating 150,000 state-aided jobs.

Tax those rich pricks – 75 percent tax on incomes above €1 million, and creation of an additional 45% for additional income of €150,000 euros.

Reduce nuclear from 75 percent to 50 percent of France’s energy and replace it with other green energy sources (um, such as???).

Construction of 500,000 state ruled homes per year, including 150,000 social.

Restoration of retirement (paid by the State) at age 60 for those who have contributed more than 41 years.

I am always confused by people who describe a reduction in the size of an increase in spending as a ‘budget cut’. How is that possible, for an increase to be described as a ‘cut? Surely it is merely a smaller increase, yet we have even the Daily Telegraph describing smaller increases as ‘budget cuts’!

As Graham pointed out, the French have made no cuts at all! Yet Hollande wants to move away from the non-austerity that is in place? Weird.

I don’t get the move away from nuclear power though. I always thought it was a brilliant move by the French to have so much of it.

A proposed amendment to the Mixed Ownership Model has just been released, to change 51% voting rights to 51% crown ownership.

– the Crown must hold 51% of every class of shares in the company, as well as 51% of every class of the voting securities (which are voting shares and other securities with voting rights); and
– no person (other than the Crown) will be able to have relevant interests in more than 10% of any class of shares in the company or more than 10% of any class of the voting securities of the company

I agree with your point about not levying ratepayers to fund the pixie initiatives of the silly melons that are completely un-related to the core roles of Councils. Although the lines tend to get a bit blurred. For example, Councils provide green acre recreational facilities, including sports fields, at the ratepayers’ expense. Nobody seems to complain about that, but plenty are happy to complain about looney len wanting to provide access to swimming pools free of charge. I don’t know if such facilties were ever included within the original mandates of those bodies but it comes as no surprise that they are generally accepted as such now given the propensity of elected officials to get free with someone else’s money.

Personally, I can’t see the difference in principle between free pools and free playing fields, so should the jafas switch to user pays for playing fields if they don’t make the pools free? Do that and it then raises the question about what to do with the parks and green spaces – pay an entry fee? Or just do away with these spaces altogether? One thing that can be said about that largesse however, is that across a region, a far greater proportion of the populace can benefit from recreational spaces than a parade or event directed specifically at one section of the community; like the expensive failed venture into soccer promotion with the Galaxy by that well qualified soccer entrepeneur Mike Lee of the ARC (that was), the Hamilton V8 Supercars fiasco, or Auckland’s celebration of homosexuality.

As for farmers though, I think that it’s perfectly reasonable to expect that when water passes through a farmer’s land, it leaves in pretty much the same condition that it arrived. I wouldn’t use a stream on my land as a rubbish dump and I would expect my upstream neighbour to think likewise. Of the odd farmer I’ve chatted to from time to time, I get the impression that my view is pretty consistent with mainstream farmer thinking so I believe that to suggest otherwise is actually doing farmers a dis-service.

I’m not saying Russell is a Jesus Christ Superstar or even another David Lange whom I have also heard speak. however it is my impartial observation that RN does have a smegma oops smidgen of the personality attribute of charisma that bestows on him the ability to inspire devotion in others susceptible to his particular message. Many successful politicians have this particular personally trait to some degree.

It is well documented that it was social largesse that crippled these economies and hardly the machinations of Deutsche Bank. Anyway, what is your evidence for this accusation other than the fact that earnings went up? Have you undertaken an in-depth review of Deutsche Bank’s business?

Successful speakers always have more charisma than Mark Todd. In it’s fundamental form it is the ability to make members of the audience think the speaker is talking straight at them. I think that the Greens have become more successful due to the enlistment of RN. And remember it is a hallmark of charisma that those rational thinkers that are not susceptible to the charasmatics’ charm offensive wonder what all the fuss is about. To them the speaker seems to be nothing mr more than an ordinary person. But to all those enthralled by his charm the speaker is talking of the second coming.

I see the latest from our education experts on another fluff piece on Close Up is to ban publishing decile tables for schools.

The theory being that whites are avoiding lower decile schools. Ignoring the fact that it’s damn hard to tie that cause and effect together, if it was true doesn’t it tell you that parents want choice?

Damm…I just noticed sofia @ 8.34 someone sure pissed on her corflakes !

Simple fact is good teachers get jobs at good schools coz they can.

Naenae was devoid of a single teacher that gave a fuck when I was there. I taught a mate to do simple maths coz up until third for he couldnt add. He was a rather large rather violent chap which may have shaped his teachers thoughts, I was a rather large unviolent chap.
Given the choice between Naenae (decile 2) and Hutt (decile 9)why wouldnt ya give your kid bus fare?

Colville – just noticed eh? – bit fucking slow – just write crap and not read anything after it?
You may have had the misfortune to be in a decile one school, assuming that was it’s equivalent when you were there, and found every teacher was useless.
I know at least one local decile one school where it is certainly not as you outline.
So it is your experience against mine.
But I am not the one turning it into a glib sweeping statement.

Notes from this evening’s telephone chat with my friend from Moschato, which some of you might know is just two stops north of Piraeus on the metro.
New Democracy; thankfully my countrymen have seen sense.
That bloke we chatted with in the Paeroa pizza shop, when you were here just three months ago;
“He was murdered? Panagia mou!
Was it the maoris?”
I thought it was an interesting observation on our country’s racial attitudes that prompted that response from Costas.

On first look it is amazing that the innate violence of a section of our population should be so obvious to a visitor. Then it makes you realise that the human race succeeded because we developed a “sixth sense” enabling us to recognise & assess threats quickly & almost subconsciously.

I wonder how many others depart our shores, knowing what we in our politically correct shithole must never state lest we be accused of racism.

Sofia…my last post of the day..and sorry if I didnt haunt the thread awaitying your stunning post of 8.34 but I do have a life.. but why wouldnt you give the kid $2 for bus fare to go from a decile 2 to a decile 9? cheap investment really.
You could give em busfare to go to Silverstream to Scots to a decile 10 of course but that mightcost a dolar or two.

I do asume that the decile ranking is not based on neighbourhood but parents incomes? So decile ranking is something that can be changed by a school if they attract a better class of …..?

Am I wrong?

I don’t think it is a better class of parents/families at all, they are just not as well off.
The Ministry changes the decile based on the parents and areas standing.

It is double taxation and sadly racist.

The reality is that a school like a sausage factory costs so much to produce a sausage.
I suspect no school is given what is needed to produce the best sausages 🙂

At Scots it would be $16k a year plus the travel, which for 8-14 Lads in a class in the senior years, might be a good deal.
Some parents obviously think so and if the funding followed the child maybe more from the Hutt might go there ?

the decile ranking affects funding is my understanding and lower decile schools receive more funding.

Everyone is aware that there are a few major influences for academic results:
– wealth of family
– parents
– school

These overlap a bit in that it’s hard to work out how much of the well off influence comes about because better off parents get their kids to better schools or better off parents inculcate different expectations/values/approaches around education and they tend to go to the same schools.

There will be a very high likelihood of a correlation between school deciles and academic outcome. I notice not mentioned once tonight on Close Up. Parents want choice and are smart enough to work this out.

I still do not see any proof that this behaviour derives just from decile rankings as many parents invariably know which schools have the most problems, worst kids, poor outcomes etc. Parents will avoid these schools – worse decile schools will tend to be the schools to be avoided.

Spent about an hour in the cells at Auckland Central.

Have Court appearance this Friday 22 June 2012 at 9am.

Did this to help prove how quickly the Police can ACT.

We’re still waiting to hear what the Police are doing about the John Banks alleged electoral fraud complaints?

Smack admission bars grandparents

Grandparents described as “the perfect family” have been banned from taking in their baby grand-daughter because they believe in smacking.

Brian and Hannah Johnson, of Tauranga, have two adult children of their own, have been Child, Youth and Family caregivers for a niece for 13 years, and have brought up an 8-year-old grandson since he was a baby.

But CYF has refused to let them take in their grandson’s 21-month-old half-sister because they told CYF they smacked their grandson occasionally as “a last resort”.
