From the chip wrapper regarding the interviews yesterday with our Bill and Taxcinda where unsurprisingly Bill’s appeared to be full of technical glitches and Taxindas not quite so many.

I am paying for skill and experience to ensure that this country does not disappear up its own orifice in a shit storm of small minded envy driven malice provided by a ‘good time not a long time’ learner!

  That’s part of the problem with our modern presidential style elections: far too much emphasis on one person’s personality. What’s wrong with a “boring” leader?
  
  They also made mention of the fact English started talking about the team quite a bit at the start when it was supposed to be all about him. I’m sorry, but an election is all about the team.

    Antiquated psychology of people driven by evolution in distant past of frequent warfare. ‘Leaders’ were apparently useful then to motivate the cannon-fodder. But in modern democratic times charismatic ‘Leaders’ are mostly a terrible idea as it is doesn’t improve governance. A smart mouth enabling a bully to push through bad ideas does not necessarily make for a good Prime Minister (as Muldoon proved).

  Being somewhat vacuous comes in handy at times, for example for batting away questions (on tricky subjects like CGT’s) with such pearlers as:

  It can also be used to answer any question the MSM puts to Taxinda! For example:

    And the article this Morning on the herald by Andrew Dickens is about that very thing. How labour is popular all about the feels, but that have no policy or detail on taxes and answer every question with one of the brush off answers you describe. The gist of the article is Labour hasn’t got any policy. So that would be a bad headline for labour you would think. Instead it’s a smiley photo of the primeministerial toothpaste model and headline Ardern, Policy and the Hyenas Waiting to Pick Her Bones. Protraying Jacinda as the victim?! What about “Ardern has she got any policy?” or “How much tax please miss?”

We need a car analogy for the various political ‘leaders’, so here it is:

Bill English: Toyota.
Low on charisma but strongly-built, steady and reliable, does what it says on the tin, no surprises, history of strength and dependability, to be trusted.

Jacinda Ardern: Alfa Romeo.
Sexy styling, exciting image, great showroom appeal, but things don’t fit too well under the gleaming surface and there will be major problems when the warranty expires.

Winston Peters: Holden.
Past its prime but still has nostalgic appeal to befuddled traditionalists who failed to notice that the world has moved on from protectionism.

James Shaw: used import Nissan Leaf on the side of the road with a flat battery:
Doesn’t deserve a car analogy as the man can’t even drive, but if he did this would be it.

Te Ururoa Flavell: Mercedes-Benz.
Nothing but the best for the figurehead of the Waitangi gravy train..

Gareth Morgan: Saab:.
A failed car company which is about as eccentric as he is and as relevant to his politics.

David Seymour: Porsche.
Because if you represent Epsom, that’s the default drive.

Peter Dunne: Morris Marina:
About as stylish as his bow ties, he probably used to drive one and it ended the same way as his party.

  I like the analysis but think I can see Jacinda on a Vespa buzzing around town waving to her young trendy disciples. Riding a scooter would establish her green credentials for those in Labour who have slid across from the sinking Greens. Besides, Vespas are for short quick rides…and not for traversing long distances. Jacinda’s leadership is for a short time not a long time as she herself claims.

Heard Peter Dunne on Check Point Monday evening.

Dunny reckons National’s gonna take it on the 23rd.

Also basically said Taxinda is not up to the job.

This is significant coming from a guy who spent most of his political career keeping out of the politics of politics.

So, National have come to the conclusion Dunne running = O’Connor winning. At least with Dunne out of the picture, now National has some show of winning Ohariu.

I think Dunne got out because he knows National were finally, actually getting somewhere, and because it’s going to be unbelievably close, and a Labour coalition will put NZ back decades.

Some might call him an ass hole or a fence sitter; I think he’s ultimately Dunne an honourable thing and effectively given the only card he has to the ‘centre right’.

Labour strategists will be spewing.

  And how nice the world ‘honourable’ gets an airing.
  
  Spewing gets a mention too. Remember that with him in the Andrea Vance leaks affair?
  
  At the time of the Vance business there was talk of Dunne being beguiled and besotted. And there’s an irony. His end was threatened then by a ‘young’ woman but he survived. And now his end has come because of a ‘young’ woman.
  
  Now though he is your darling, not just an ordinary one though, an Honourable one.

  The best part of that segment was the total disbelief in John Campbell’s voice when Dunne said Ardern wasn’t up to it and English would win.
  Campbell’s voice went up 4 octaves.
  He just couldn’t grasp that someone was not totally enchanted with Ardern.
  And when Dunne explained how English was committed to a fact-based social welfare system, rather than Turei-style take what you think you need, Campbell cut the discussion short very quickly.

  Dunne’s majority in 2014 was only 710 (13569) over Viginia Anderson Lab (12859). Tane Woodley GP came fourth on (2764).
  Brett Hudson recieved ( 6120 ) although the National Party polled overwhelming the highest in Party Votes with ( 18810 ).
  Hudson’s job in 2017 is to garner those party votes for himself which would give him a large majority and secure the seat for National.
  Now that Dunne has stood aside the need to tactically vote in Ohariu is no longer relevant although the Nats will be advising the electorate to two ticks blue to maintain a high party vote turnout.

    Personally I was fine with the alternative to that debt being run up. But I doubt you would have been. So please stop complaining about it. Or go back and read the 2008 and 2009 economic forecasts and explain how exactly you would have avoided that debt. Oh and then go back and add the earthquake.

      Or even better, go and inspect the record in Hansard from approximately 2008-2011 where many Labour MPs were demanding, in response to the GFC that the Key government should have been borrowing more in a classic prescription of Keynesian pump-priming, as like Australia under Rudd and Gillard. Oh, yes, and Russel Norman was bleating about “quantitative easing”.
      
      Now, some 9 years down the track, who has come out better from the GFC – Aussie…or NZ? Um, and the Minister of Finance who was Key’s right hand man in that period?
      
      Oh, but that means less Kiwis are now going to Aussie/many have returned and house prices have, for the moment risen due to supply-and-demand…so that too is a “crisis”. Can’t please some people… 😉

      Seems I have to be alert for what I could lose or be taxed upon:
      Some lot wants my puddy cats…… not getting my vote
      Some lot might charge me for “hoarding” water….not getting my vote
      Some lot expects me to pay for the lazy-bone lads down the road…. not getting my vote

  I think it is pretty clear that people mostly vote with their wallets, otherwise the bribes wouldn’t work. Enlightened individuals who put their country first are thin on the ground outside of the productive sector (but they too are selfish in that they understand that they do better if economy is healthy)

After watching the Lie-bour Party’s news channel known as TVNZ.Seems the Channels 263 staff employed in the news room ,have come up with a game plan to anoint Angry Andy Little’s replacement. Case in point even the opening gambit has Little’s replacement in front of our present Prime Minister,Bill English.
Even worse the Lie-bour Party have a defacto Propaganda Minister known as Corrin Dann. He spews out the fact with a great snow job,that the water taxes,or any increase in taxes brought in by the new Lie-bour Leader, would not be a problem.
Maybe people like him ,may not be concerned that,nightly with his Lie-bour Party inspired propaganda,that NZ could be headed for a VENEZUELA type of nation ,run by socialists,that know which is best for us.
Heard Little’s replacement even talk about turning NZ into a Republic,just like VENEZUELA ,the country she admires.
One thing perhaps people like her,have forgotten, they still have to win the treasury benches in September.

It does not bode well for Farmers or National if the polls like the Colmar Brunton are to be believed. The latest One News poll has 59% of voters wanting Farmers and Grower to pay royalties for irrigation supplying them water, so it seems the voter wants Labours tax policy and a change of Government come September 23rd.

I know a Labour led government will eventually happen again, maybe even this year. Earlier in the year I thought perhaps they wouldn’t be quite so bad, given their talk of no new taxes and spending no more than x percent of GDP. But now they seem to be announcing new taxes left right and centre, but won’t tell us exactly what or how much.

    The dividends from the 51% Government shareholding Mercury and Meridian are way in excess of the dividends that were earned when both companies were SOEs. This is due to a genuinely competitive market and the mass of efficiencies introduced by both companies since semi-privatisation.
    
    Mercury announced a 15% dividend yesterday. That is massive.

        You tell me Gobby. Meridian and Mercury plant is in tiptop shape, Mercury is charging ahead with wind and geothermal energy. In fact both companies use 100% renewable resources. The last I heard Air NZ planes and plant are all state of the art and fuel efficient.

I am beginning to become actually concerned over Cinderella’s progress.
Whilst the PREFU is today it appears that Labour have turned a sharp left already irrespective.
CGT for example even Andy said no way.
All I am hearing from her is how “I” am going to tax you.
When actually questioned she is flaky and waffles, obviously she does not have an intelligent clue without asking somebody.
After nine years in opposition she surely should have some semblance of understanding of facts.
Being in Opposition is where you can waffle irrelevances with no substance as long as you embarrass the Government.
Winston knows this better than Cindy.
Whilst this does not suit her projection of her socialist state.
Of course none of her colleagues have ever been a Minister with Departmental responsibilities she, when elected will find a reality shock of having to deal, nevertheless with partisan people in various Departments, who will run professional rings round any untested and unknown Minister.
Cannot see this bodes well for New Zealand (aka in the future as Aotearoa).
We are a trading nation doing very well in the World – I cannot but see that Cindy’s personal prejudices will help our country in the future.
She is very left wing politically bound with dummies along for the ride (in BMW limousines).

The fable of Taxcinderella.

Once not so long ago, in the land of the Kiwi, there lived a not so pretty girl by the name of Taxcinderella. She had the charm of a rattlesnake, all fur coat and no knickers.

It came to pass, that Kiwiland was in the midst of an election. The political climate was, to say the least, a little bit confused. The gween melon party had just imploded with their vile tubby co-leader having to resign because she proudly admitted to be a fraud, thief and a liar. All turn offs in the eyes of good hard working kiwis. The rest of the bludging population referred her as a hero. This left the wimp of a man, Jamie in the unenviable position of trying to get back the support from the leftie dumb arses, who formed the gweens support base.

Taxcinderella had just been appointed the leader of the Liabore party at the resignation of Little Angry. He was the anointed one by the union bosses. He quickly found he was not up to the job, so he chucked it in and Taxcinderella took over as the leader. “I am not here for a long time, only a good time,” was her mantra.

At first, Taxcinderella was the media darling. With Hellun, the ugly sister in the background, Taxcinderella could do no wrong. Then the bouffant liabore whore leader of United Last saw the writing on the wall. Knowing that he would finally lose his electorate seat, chucks in the towel and resigns. Thinking it’s better to go now rather than suffer the humiliation of defeat.

Waiting in the wings, was the Winston First party, lead by a drunken dwarf, who was eyeing up Taxcinderella as a potential lover. This he hoped to cement by a shotgun marriage between the Liabores and Winston Firsts. This drunken dwarf would awake each morning and look in his pseudo gilt mirror and ask who is the fairest in the land of kiwi. In the background was the lingering stench of the previous nights’ booze. The drunken dwarf had made so many demands, calling them his bottom lines. Nobody believed he would keep them and he certainly didn’t expect to be in a position to deliver on any.

Also on the scene was a recent arrival, Gareth Tops. He was a little spoilt rich kid who had money for brains and nothing else. He hated cats with a vengeance. These two suitors for the unfair hand of Taxcinderella, both knew they would have to give up the reigns of power, to end up in bed with her.

Meanwhile, the incumbent government of the Nats, ably lead by Billy Blinglish, was going about the business of governing a stable country. They had been slowly pissing off their support base by pandering to the natives at every turn. The voting public had a very difficult choice to make. Continue down the Nats line of slowly as she goes, whilst at the same time, yielding control to the natives, or vote for the rabble that would be a co-boat of the left.

Taxcinderella had a very difficult time ahead of her as the election loomed closer and closer. The ugly aunt was determined to get revenge on the electorate, for her defeat at the hands of the Nats 9 years ago. Added to this was her recent defeat at the hands of the UN, who selected a real male to lead their shitty organisation. It appears the world was not yet ready for a UN lead by a lgbtwhateverthefuck you are person.

Despite all the promises of free stuff, expensive train sets, raising taxes and all the other flaky stuff, Taxcinderella and her co-boat rabble lost the election. The country stuck to the, better what you know works party, for another 3 years. Poor Taxcinderella was jilted at the alter and slunk off to the chippy were she poured salt on the fish and chips of her beloved Morrinsville farmers.

So under Jacinda’s capital gains tax which she won’t confirm, a guy or girl could buy an old wreck of a car, spend years doing it up and sell it as a Classic Car and get taxed as having made a capital gain. Doesn’t seem fair to me.

Capital Gain Tax ,not a problem,say most of us,as the promise by the socialist woman ,that the family home would not be involved.
Well we better not get too complacement, on that type of tax.Give us your vote says she,and after the election,that is when the Capital Gain Taxes,or ambush will be revealed.

An inheritance tax,or better known as the “dead granny tax”.If a person inherits a house from granny or poppa,no tax,except if they sell it Capital Gains Tax would then apply. That is how it was designed by Lie-bour and their cohorts at the 2014 election,which thankfully they didnt win.
Another tax,how about stamp duty,and gift duty tax,which the socialist Lie-bour Party favour.
Lie-bours bag of tax tricks will be endless should they get people to vote them in next month,by way of virtually giving them a blank cheque, to change the well being of many hard working NZ Taxpayers.

Tax-Water use (opps.. I mean royalty).
Tax Emissions (to now include farmers).
Tax- 10c extra on fuel on Aucklanders.
Tax-Capital gains
Tax-new higher tax rate on higher earners (anyone earning $120K and above).

  Tauranga alone has over 25% of its staff over $100,000 and the tops are over $300,000.
  Auckland % is even greater I understand and up to $700,000 for the CEO.

Let me see if I have this straight. Labour wants to overhaul our tax system – hmmm could be a good idea – There are things I would change if I had a chance… What does Labour want to change?
Well, they won’t tell us.
They have a water tax, capital gains tax, wealth tax, asset tax, land tax, etc, all on the table as new sources of revenue for the government – and they will cancel the planned income tax reductions legislated for in 2018.
They won’t tell us how much extra tax they will suck from the productive sector.
Correct me if I’m wrong (you know you want to!) but when National was campaigning in 2008 they told us exactly what they would do if elected and then they did it. They did do a switch-a-roo with GST and income tax but it was revenue neutral so we can forgive them for that. In 2011 they again told us exactly what they planned to do (partial asset sales) and then did it. No surprises, no secrets.
This is not an argument about whether what they did was the right thing or not – it’s about saying clearly what the plan is and then delivering actions that are consistent with the plan they campaigned on.
In 1999 did Labour campaign on getting rid of appeals to the Privy Council and setting up our own Supreme Court? Nope – but they did it anyway. Did they campaign on dismantling the fighter wing of the Air Force? Nope, but they did it anyway.
The truth is we have NO IDEA what a Labour-led government would do. Except we KNOW they will increase our taxes – almost certainly making the system more complicated – and we KNOW they will mess with or close down charter schools.
What Labour do have is a fresh, new face to tell everyone they have the answers – vote for Labour on trust – but either they won’t tell us what the answers are, or they simply have no idea what to do.
Bill English has been criticised for being boring and praised for giving us a growing economy, targeted spending on the health sector and the disadvantaged that makes a difference.
Jacinda Adern has been criticised for being having no management or cabinet experience and praised for her optimism and great handling of the media.
Fact is one of these people will be Prime Minister after the election.
We know what we will get with Bill English. We actually have no idea what we will get with Jacinda Adern.

Political commentators are saying the interview to be PM yesterday on the Herald by Jacinda that there was a focus on the word “I” by her when speaking of her desire for the top job and not a lot of “we “. now no mater what anyone does in life most have been taught at school or in the home by your parents that there is no letter I in the word team to get ahead and be successful it helps to remember those words. So lets hope the Labour leader remembers that the country is led by a team and fronted by wise ones.

I remember the day I stopped voting for Helen Clarke. It was shortly after helping her get elected. It was hearing her definition of democracy – or not.

She said, “I’m not going to find a crowd and run to the front of it. I’m going to lead and have people follow.”

Now that may sound all sorts of ‘noble’ but it means:

I’m not part of the ‘crowd’ – being the electorate – and have nothing in common with them.

I don’t believe the electorate should have any part in determining the governance of the country.

I’m going to force the electorate to go where it doesn’t want to go but I want it to.

You know? Labour haven’t changed. Ardern’s terminology is:

“Ardern … saying it was the job of a Government to make hard decisions that might not be popular but would make a difference.”

I will not vote for Labour until they return to true representative democracy, acknowledging the right of voters to determine how they are governed.

It’s all reflected in Andrew Dicken’s comments on her ‘interview’ by the NZ Herald:

“Ardern kept well away from policy.
Capital gains tax? Let’s form a working group. Again.

A republic? Let’s start the conversation. Again.

TPP? Say whatever you want as the thing is in limbo. So let’s make it about housing, not trade.

Immigration? She doesn’t like to fixate on numbers and she assured business that they’d have the migrants their industry would need.

It was a masterclass in saying nothing at all, while seeming to be confident and ready to lead.

Remember, she has a degree in communications and PR, and she’s pretty good at it.
She knows people are leery of her party and their fondness for tax, particularly when they use it to socially engineer, so let’s kick it down the road and keep the conversation on feelings, not policy.”

‘Youth and women’ may relate to her imagery but they would be foolish to believe that Labour are going to ‘represent’ them or anyone else. They have ideology and agenda they will implement whether anyone likes it or not and don’t care whether anyone likes it or not.

And currently, they’re being experts at not stating what they are. Once, if, they get into power – no-one but the small intellectual elite will have any say at all – and you can believe, many won’t like what they do – or they would put it clearly to the people to begin with and be bound by their choice.

Remember 40% dont pay a net income tax and another 20% pay very little. So they dont care about tax increases they aint gonna hit their net pocket.

So the Left can promise tax increases and these people vote for them thinking they are gonna get some of the extra which they will.

Only 40% pay real income tax and 80% of all income tax is paid by 15% of tax payers.

So a big incentive to vote for Labour/Green/NZF.

And thats without the Jacinda effect.

IMHO the race is too close to call and will also be after 23 Sept as Luigi shuffles backwards and forwards seeking his best deal.

Both of them will spread their legs and wave them in the air anything to retain power and control over the sheeple who populate NZ

So Jacinda wants to have a conversation about becoming a republic? Well thats’s beset with a rather large conundrum for the leftie SJW types.

They like to consider that the Treaty of Waitangi is our founding document and all legislation etc needs to take it into account. The problem is that the ToW is between the Maori Chiefs and the British Crown. If we were to become a republic then they’ll have to tear up the ToW and, most probably, have to resettle all the “full and final” settlements again.

Maybe they can turn us into a republic at the same time as taxing water (whoops, I mean charging a royalty) so the gravy train only needs one more “full and final” settlement and not two?

It appears that the sickening trend of virtue signalling has finally reached across into sports.
I can think of no other reason why there is saturation coverage of the horrendous female rugby world cup. The level of coverage this minor tournament is attracting cannot be due to the skill being displayed by these females as there is none. The quality of the game is less that what one would expect to see in an primary school game.
If the tournament has any value at all it is as a freak show.
Sky wonder why they are losing 38,000 subscribers, when they offer up crap like the female rugby world cup as a premium product and promote it far beyond its appeal or quality level then it is not hard to see why they are losing subscribers in such vast numbers.

What are the various political parties doing about our energy security ? Without affordable energy on demand we can not possibly grow our economy, not to mention stay warm in winter. Already the poor and elderly are dying needlessly due to energy poverty and no party seems concerned.

The developed nations are moving towards increased use of coal , which is a resource we have in abundance. Why are our coal mines sitting idle while people die and businesses face crippling energy costs ?

France and Germany Turn to Coal

Last month, generation from fossil fuels was the highest in 32 years in France and nuclear generation was the lowest since 1998. As a result, French month-ahead power prices escalated to near the highest levels since 2009.

Germany is replacing its nuclear units with renewable energy (wind and solar) as part of its energy transition, the so-called Energiewende. It is using mainly coal to back-up its intermittent renewable energy and as a result, it has increased its coal-fired generation. Due to the higher cost of wind and solar units, residential electricity prices have escalated and are 3 times that of the United States.

Clearly windmills don’t cut it and are not viable even with massive subsidies. If the consumer had to pay what it actually costs then “alternative” [chuckle] energy would result in domestic power bills of around 5k a month and good luck trying to run a manufacturing business.

Dams are good but the green groups oppose them due to political reasons. The West Coast has a rail system, coal mines and a willing workforce desperate for employment, all ready to go. We need to plan for our future and open the mines while building a gigantic coal burning power plant. Jobs and prosperity will follow.

    Solid energy tried to make money selling coal in a saturated market. My plan is we keep it local and use our coal to power our country and economy.
    
    Coal is a natural organic product so is carbon neutral. The CO2 produced came from the atmosphere and we are simply liberating it. It is a win/win solution.
    
    It is time to get serious about this and stop pissing around with windmills.

      Chinese firms are building coal plants all around the world because their domestic construction industry is finished building coal plants. China is rolling out more solar than the rest of the world combined.
      
      We have a renewable electricity grid .
      Why would we go back to a dirty expensive unreliable technology from the 1800’s.?
      
      NZ has a long thin coast line with exceptional capacity for wind energy.
      We also have resources available for the expansion of geothermal energy capacity.
      
      Building new coal plants is not going to happen in NZ unless some commie idiot decides the government should pay.

        A new contract signed by a utility in Arizona has set a new low price for large-scale solar power in that country, but more importantly has also smashed expectations of the combined cost of large-scale solar and battery storage.
        
        Tucson Electric Power (TEP) this week announced it would buy solar energy from a new 100MW solar plant at the historically low price of less than US3c/kWh – less than half of what it had agreed to pay in similar contracts over the last few years.
        
        The project will also include 30MW/120MWh of battery storage, and the company says that the power purchase agreement for the combined output is “significantly less” than US4.5c/kWh – nearly two-thirds cheaper than the previous such contract struck in Hawaii, and well below the cost of a gas-fired peaking plant.

      It was a slackening of demand in China, the dominant buyer, that brought down prices in the world coal market.
      
      China had been stockpiling coal, as it does from time to time with copper, and other resources. Then it paused.
      
      It wasn’t just the dive in coal price that broke Solid Energy.
      
      It was also its bold (and intelligent) plans to harness the country’s large reserves of coal-seam gas. Work on this was well under way around Huntly. CSG is just what NZ needs to balance unfavourable weather for hyrdro, wind, and perhaps in future, solar power. The Greens and their greenish mates in National and Labour didn’t like the idea of fracking CSG.
      
      It was also Solid Energy’s bold (and wrong) project buying up Southland farmland to mine the vast lignite resources underneath with the goal of turning them into diesel fuel. But then oil prices dived and the whole project was uneconomic.

  Have you been aware that for several months our hydro lakes have had below average storage levels for this time of year? And that is in a relatively normal rainfall year. Now the dreamers and Eco-warriors are telling us we will all have to change to EV cars by 2040, and ignoring all the problems with batteries/rare earth/charging points, where the hell is all the electricity going to come from to charge them up. Especially when we all arrive home in the evenings and plug in? Where is all the replacement energy in our transport system currently provided by petrol/diesel going to come from. It’s not as though the aforesaid Eco-warriors are going to allow more dams to be built, or even geothermal.

    To make green energy work best, NZ needs to have thermal generation to meet demand peaks, and ensure supply during weather-caused shortfalls.
    
    Exploration indications are that we have good reserves of natural gas offshore, and we have good reserves of coal-seam gas.
    
    The Greens and their greenish mates don’t see that tapping these and building a few thermal stations in North and South islands would enable us to maximise our natural power generation potential.

    Something like 15% is geothermal now that’s base line generation that is both cheap and reliable

      At times of the year, and perhaps now, electricity flows south across Cook Strait.

All these EV cars will require lots of aluminum, and aircraft manufacture requires high grade aluminum produced most economically by electrical smelting as practiced at Tiwai. Supplementing our electricity needs in the face of all these future requirements by solar and wind is just total bs … no matter how many times the greens repeat it.

    This isn’t as stable a power source as many believe. It takes a lot of work to establish best harnessing spots, a lot of drilling and pipe work, and you never really know how much resource is there for you to tap, when it might stop, or when the heat’s natural path might move.

This extra cash will then be chucked at the feckless and their mongrel offspring to try and help pull them out of the sewer but like all other handouts will prove ineffective and just maintain the status quo but at a higher cost on going cost.
These are policies totally bereft of any vision beyond just keeping bludgers and wasters on the payroll to shut them up and secure their votes.

A commentator said a few days ago that National have been a lazy government – and I agre,e and for that reason they need a large kick in the pants.
They have failed at almost every yardstick that one measures a society by – education, health, transport, rebuild, low wages, and so on.
Labour on the other hand arent as unknown as everyone thinks . Historically labour have made societies big changes – they havent been lazy. Yes some have been major mistakes. However we need some obvious changes. We need to stop education being a experimental laboratory – especially in the school area where they are failing badly (mathematics, science, ability to read and write, etc). And we have to stop the idiocy of everyone running off to university (Arderns promises here are a worry)We have to some how get wages up. We have to tackle the water challenge and the low value agricultural production (milk powder – the lowest value product one can make from milk). And water is just one part of the whole environment matter.
We have to stop building roads – they just turn into car parks. Yes we have a challenge with low population – but that didnt stop earlier governments building the hydro dams and the main trunk railway.
Sometimes a country has to borrow to do these things and the building up of government finances doesnt actually do anything – except allow political parties to make promises and big spend ups on easy projects just before an election.
And dont for get the ten bridges that were promised in northland – they didnt even have a list. Talk about trump telling porkies………..

Ive never voted Labour and I wont this time (it will be NZ first – that is to keep whoever does get in a slightly bit more honest than they would have been without him) but National have got to where they are by doing fuck all – except build up a savings account – and we all know how useless a savings account is – it always under-performs real things like land and buildings and infrastructure.

  I’d be careful of reading too much into one nutjob’s opinion.
  I think a more balanced consideration would look at the reason for the stature, or whatever. Just because someone fitted with prevailing mores would not be sufficient, in my view, to demolish a statue. It becomes a different matter where the statue celebrates particularly loathsome action, even by the standards of the day.
  So keep Nelson – his statue does not commemorate anything about slavery.

      perhaps they need to spend more time in study… that is study of why these student groups are actually offended by the paintings, or even if they really are. Perhaps a good study of the Psychology behind these groups would be beneficial… then they can put the paintings back and encourage the diverse to come back as faculty and be up on the wall, while at the same time trying to bring some sanity back.

Noticed on the radio (ZB) this morning a series of ads for the Horrid. They are clearly politically focused as they entail a child asking its mother ‘why are those people sleeping in the street …’ and ‘why can’t we buy a house, Mummy …’
The dialogue is followed by an extortion to go to NZ Herald Focus to get the real story to help you make your decision this election.
I have never heard anything so blatantly one-sided and biased. If I were a subscriber to the Herald (which, thankfully I am not), I would be cancelling my sub forthwith.
Do others regard these ads in the same way?

Winston Peters has promised to take the MW to $20.

This to remind all – of the 9 to $12 rise that occurred the last time NZF was in government. And synchronises the position in line with Labour’s longer term goal of getting it to $20 (without a time frame, NZF does not either, a meaningless policy – National will also do it at some point).

There would be little chance of National going any higher than a 50 cents rise per annum (they increased the amount by 50 cents this year but only because it is election year).

Policies on MW are only real if they involve a schedule of annual increases.

All we have is Labour’s 75 cents next year and National’s 50 cents this year (and they will not bid higher in future). NZF could have said $ a year (as per 2009-2012), but they have not.

The only innovative contribution is to connect MW increases with company tax cuts.

  MW and tax cuts have no relationship. The MW is not to be tinkered with lightly its affects can be devastating on prices and employment. Sensible, well measured, careful adjustments are the way to go.

      It is too soon to say if there is any warming. The science is unclear. Climate systems are very complex and we simply don’t know enough to predict anything. It is doubtful we ever will given the complexity of the systems and how they inter relate.
      
      Top scientists have been telling us this for years but the alarmist luddites just ignore them and continue to screech about global floods and doomsday.

Hey all, a question. I saw someone point out on a Facebook post that national debt has ballooned to $85 billion under National.

  And they left the Romanians guarding their left flank. Although Anthony Beevor in his brilliant book on the subject made the point they were poorly resourced. Plus they had the Italians (yikes!), the Hungarians, the Bulgarians, and even the Spanish Blue Divison too.
  
  Was arguably a doomed offensive from the start as the two attempted thrusts by the Wehrmacht – to the south into the Caucasus for the oil, and to the east across the Volga at Stalingrad to cut Moscow off from that oil – were divergent and could not support one another.
  
  Also, thanks for posting that audio link the other day of Hitler chatting to Finnish Commander-in-Chief Mannerheim in 1942. “If we had known the Russians has 25,000 tanks…!”. Yeah, but Napoleon could have told ya, Adolf – don’t invade Russia – especially with the British on your other front! 😉

      Yes, that 62nd Army under General Vasily Chuikov hung on for grim death to the west side of the Volga. Sure, in bombing the place first the Germans unwittingly created the worst possible environment for the mobile warfare they were set up for and a perfect one for the Soviets, but it was such a close-run thing until the counter-attack that trapped the German 6th Army in the Kessel was ready.

      The Hitler and Mannerheim Recording is a secret voice recording of a private conversation between Adolf Hitler and Baron Carl Gustaf Emil Mannerheim, Marshal of Finland and Commander-in-Chief of the Finnish Defence Forces, during a secret visit honoring Mannerheim’s 75th birthday on 4 June 1942. Thor Damen, an engineer for the Finnish broadcasting company Yle, succeeded in recording the first eleven minutes of Hitler’s and Mannerheim’s private conversation. Since Hitler never allowed anyone to record him off-guard, it had to be done secretly. Damen’s original purpose was to record official birthday speeches and Mannerheim’s responses.     The Hallenstein brothers weren’t really loved by the gold miners that they sold gear to at high, high prices.
    
    The Lebanese, overwhelmingly Christian rather than Muslim, assimilated well, and so, too, when they were too slowly allowed, did the discriminated-against Chinese.
    
    The Irish Catholics, such as Bill English’s family, merged in, too, though I think Bill English once said something it was like being in a sea of Scots.
    
    There are limited jobs in Southland. Some dairy farmers have been pushing for cheap Asian labour with the usual crap that local kids are useless, and there is a Chinese dairy plant emerging at Mataura, but, over all, jobs are definitely not abundant down south. Goodness help Southlanders in the next export trade downturn.

      They lived through and survived the 1980s, Jack5. Bottomline – if Southland is to avoid becoming the West Coast or Northland it needs…people. Time will tell if they have a good crop, but I back the locals to do everything in their power to turn ’em into good Kiwis. If they can’t. no one can.

  Despite the cries for diversity four women are contesting the Invercargill electorate this election: Sarah Dowie, the sitting National MP; Liz Craig, until recently a Dunedin-ite, for Labour; Ria Bond, a present list MP, for NZ First; and Rochelle Surundran, for the Greens.
  
  The Wellington bureaucrats have run the MultiKulture steam roller over Southland.

    The jobs will come when you get more people in there. I reckon it is a good idea putting refugees in the regions. Certainly better than pumping them into Auckland where things cost more and they will not assimilate with the locals.
    
    Most refugees make good citizens just as long as the PC crowd keep out of it.

    Bring the people, and the jobs will come! People still talk about how pumping the population up to 10 million will make us a super-state.
    
    The truth: we are a heavily export-dependent country; GDP per capita has already begun to fall, meaning population is outrunning economic growth; for about four or five decades NZ has been running balance of payments deficits, meaning we spend more than we earn; while doing well in Government debt, we have quite high private debt (through banks borrowing to pump money into the property market).
    
    We are pretty much a two-horse economy, dairying and tourism. It won’t be fun if both are hit at the same time.

      I do not believe in pumping more and more people into the country, or even the world. I am a minimalist in most things including population.
      
      The single biggest environmental problem we face is population growth and unless we address that all our feel good green bullshit is for nothing.
      
      The fact is we are going to continue taking in refugees as we always have. I am just saying its best to stick them down south instead of up north.
      
      I think all religion is retarded so I am less worried about that. Just as long as they assimilate culturally with our society.
