    I have found that my iPhone is the best phone I have ever had. It is secure, waterproof and the various update are quick and dont take long. The battery charges quickly and the various apple apps are great. It was not that more expensive than the fire bug Samsung. You slag off a phone you have not even tried or looked at.

      My iPhone’s used to be great but each successive model has become less reliable and more expensive.
      
      Had it in repair under warranty on 3 different occasions (over 3 models admittedly).
      Each time they just stopped working, no water, no dropping onto the ground. Complete replacement by Apple, no argument.

      Actually, the Missus Daf has an iPhone and many friends also have iPhones, while I use the “Fire Bug” Samsung and have done for many generations of it. Although calling anything other than a very specific S7 model and version a fire bug is the same as calling the iPhone fragile based on the model that cracked the screen when you held it.
      
      Edit: All my friends with the iPhones get rid of them at 12-18months due to battery issues, you know, the batteries that can’t be replaced…

        I maintain a “fleet” of iPhones for work. Generally extremely reliable up to about 3-4 years with a lot of use, but can suffer a little after that depending on usage. My wife still uses my old iPhone 4 quite happily – and in case you think I’m a cheap bastard she doesn’t want an upgrade (yet).
        
        I think I’ve had 1 absolute failure within 2 years from about 100 or so of the things, I assume it was just out of the blue but I can’t vouch for what the user may have done except that it wasn’t water as Apple replaced it no questions asked and they can tell if it is water affected.
        
        We use Apple because they are consistent, secure, reliable, and efficient. And people like them. New Androids are probably fine, but our experience with earlier versions put us off more than a little – limited or no upgrades, inconsistent UI between models and versions, technical glitches, difficult connectivity; but they were typically reasonably reliable as phones.

        I’ve had Samsungs for years and like them. For some reason I couldn’t stand going to apple mainly because of the apple fan boys. The iPhone is almost a religion to them.
        But Samsung offers a great choice of phones, great specs and their design and innovation is far ahead of Apple. Really Apple have not innovated since Steve Jobs died.

Yet another public broadcaster, in which the SJW ‘film-makers’ can virtue signal to their hearts’ content, courtesy of the soon-to-be ruined taxpayer.

I say, let’s start with 25 episodes about an LGBGT person in Bulls presented by Lizzie Marvelly and produced by Bryan Bruce. Yah!

Of course the real fun part is that all the new employees at RNZ+1 will be headhunted from – where else? TVNZ. Mike Hosking need not apply.

Hosking will stay right there where he is until quite naturally, there is no need for ‘TVNZ’ any more and it’s sold.

The fine print:

This new, commercial-free network RNZ+1 will suck yet more eyeballs away from TV3, another Labour stronghold hanging on by the skin of its teeth. Oh-oh.

National need to weaponise this announcement against Labour, because people all round the world hold the media in pretty low regard already.

  If RNZ was as smart as they make out to be they would realise less and less people are watching TV.
  They would then look at what is trending up –one thing is simple online YouTube video news channels. Plenty in the USA,for example, done very cheaply from the presenter’s homes in many cases.
  With the money they already have they could do a much more professional version of one of these and probably attract a reasonable sized audience.
  But that would require a little thinking outside the square –not sure Campbell and co are capable of much of that.

I just heard Russell Brown discussing the new RNZ+1 on RNZ itself.

38 mil is just a joke. Going on current budgets, that will make one drama series, about a dozen documentaries, a telemovie and a handful of half hour seasons of whatever cause de jour the producers feel like making.

Factor in much larger budgets because government work is a peach and the 38 mil will actually produce less.

It’s a sop to the Grey Lynn media set which Jacinda and her partner Gayford are a big part of, but also an insurance policy – you can guarantee the end product will be soothing right up until the next election.

PJ39 – no not necessarily. RNZ+1 is designed to euthanise a large part of the broadcasting landscape. Essentially a lot of traditional broadcasters will shit themselves.

Essentially it’s just more competition which they do not need.

Yes I find it a bit hard to believe that the Labour Leader didn’t have prior knowledge of the poll result and it was a deliberate ploy to get the voter out early in case the polls continued to be negative to Labour. It is not very often you see a leader voting early.

Have been talking to friends and acquaintances re Labour/Greens CGT and what we have not been told on property.
If we assume that the family home will become subject to a CGT and Death Duties the all home owners should be scared as we are oldies are.
Some in Retirement villages are very unsure – for example who is the owner – they are not as they have bought a licence to live there, but presumably their estate family will be slugged for either or both of the CGT or Death duties when they move or die on the property they do not own.
None in our group have voted, and will not do until they know more details of how it will work and who will pay and how much.
We are very afraid and concern is hurting. In the very elderly this is serious.
Along with all the other taxes the Princess has define would be in our interest we ask – Tell Us and we can make a judgement.
The return of Helen Clark, in younger but more bitter form is also frightening.
We understand that she will bring in legislation, as soon as elected, to cancel the Tax cuts and our new income from April next.
This is one bitter young lady – love though by many women as she is ? a woman and the students who she will give three years FREE tertiary education plus more cash to spend on drink and drugs.
My Granddaughter is working hard to pay back her student loan and wants to know whether she should stop if Labour get in. There is about $14,000,000,000 owing currently – I assume that his will be cancelled.
Be afraid – we are, as we have worked hard for our families, to the good of our country, but why should it be made like Venezuela or other places at the whim of one bitter young lady with sycophants bleating behind her.

    How can you know what is actually going to happen? If we believe Labour they have yet to have a “committee meeting” but we are starting to get not on the family home, not on this not on that. So have the committee already met and decided or not. Or are they getting cut off at the knees before meeting and all options are not on the table for them to do their job.     It’s taken this long to get the planning rules changed, the special housing areas created, the building consents passed, the Taniwha’s all tipped, and the social housing providers lined up. Bill was talking about supply way back in 2011 when house prices were actually in many places falling because of our recession. Dunne and the Maori party actually arguably created this because they wouldn’t let the RMA be reformed – have to protect the allegedly native ‘toad-life’. Labour also didn’t help by litigation funding projects like Point England for 5 years in the environment court – apparently to protect an abandoned quarry from over 1000 houses. Labour can’t build their ugly state ghost houses.
    
    National can actually build the houses. Labour can’t. Even UNITE union says we need 65k houses in the next 5 years. Ardern had to admit under pressure that kiwibuild visas will be 1400 per year. So they’re 59k short according to their own union backers, because they’re the PC SJW Trump party on immigration. So coherent.
    
    Labour are saying the rest of the houses will be built by Auckland beneficiaries on a people’s grand ‘make-work’ program, and apprentices getting free building licenses. Well that’s a problem because houses aren’t meant to fall down.
    
    We are seriously primed. Bill has single handedly established that planning laws are the issue. When every single commentator, especially and including Hugh ‘short posts’ Pavel-titch was saying that was stupid and what we really need are ‘the projects’ based around white elephant rail, Bill was arguing for supply. It’s there, in general debate from 2011. He cited the HNZ 2011 Annual Report which stated euphemistically that Labour had written off one third of our 67,000 houses because they were rotten, unliveable, and too big or too small to be healthy for the occupants.

      Someone else might say that prices are too high because bank interest rates are low making investment in housing an attractive alternative (plus weak CGT). Even if the property is kept empty. There are 35,000 vacant houses in Auckland. 6.6% of the total. High than Sydney or Melbourne.

    Personally I favour 3/4 bedroom, kitset houses, fully insulated, built by HNZ for social housing at 1000 a year for 10 years.
    Then HNZ can ramp up or down the flow into whatever areas are needing.

      Lots of former Aucklanders coming down to our neck of the woods. I met a young chap yesterday who has just moved down here with his wife and one month old child, and he loves it. His house in Auckland goes to auction this week, and he already has an offer in on a house here.
      
      When the Auckland sale is finalised, he and his wife will have a nice home close to his workplace, and no debt, and they’ll actually have time to enjoy life instead of spending three hours a day in traffic.

National Awards, ‘living wage’, union strikes, and a massive 24b in new spending in 3 years. To put that into context – Labour had interest rates at 10% in 2008 when they only raised operating allowance $7b that year and without National Awards and collective bargaining. If you spike wages without productivity and increase govt spending, you create inflation, which lifts interest rates. It’s Macroeconomics 101. If you don’t want 10% interest rates and inflation destroying your assets and your earnings, vote National.

      I read the other day that 90% of unemployment recipients find a job within six months. I, myself, received the dole for very short periods of time twice. There was no way I was going to move to some other city with all the attendant disruption just to find I could have stayed where I was and resumed my previous lifestyle.

Perception by NZs voters that Ardern is out of her depth.We have got three flip flops by Ardern and Lie-bour in the last few days. Flip flop on the family home being so called tax exempt. Flip flop onTPP first she said no way,then it was a flip flop to maybe. Then just yesterday another flip flop on Asian people being excluded from buying NZ property.
She got a wake up call ,when it was pointed out to her ,that that would be against FTA agreements with South Korea,China,Singapore,Malaysia.
Flip Flopped and said the mentioned would now be exempted until further notice.
The cracks on Ardern and Lie-bours plan to win office,certainly have fractured in the last few days. A matter of Trust Lie-bour, why should we.Too many Flip Flops.

    They’ve had 9 years to work on various policies and to fine tune the detail.
    Andrew Little may not have been the best person to present or communicate the package to the voters so Ardern was bought in.
    Only problem is there was no prepared package to present, so the rejig of the leadership deckchairs may not have worked.
    In other words they have been lazy during the 9 years and maybe the hardworking Kiwis have began to realise that.

    6 weeks is plenty of time for people to get over the “flashbulb effect” of Jacinda.
    
    What Labour should have done is switched Jacinda in about 3 weeks before the election. That would not have given people enough time to sober up after the Jacinda effect.
    
    Nobody can sustain the feelz for 6 weeks. After a while they will come down from the endorphin rush and will need something a bit more substantial. All they’re seeing it that Labour want to take their stuff that they have worked hard for and use it to bribe bludgers.

    Might be right, but not sure that Arden will handle the spotlight – hasn’t shown herself capable of fronting a party during this campaign (other than by dodging voters by spending all her time visiting schools and being interviewed by sycophants). Suspect she is just too intellectually light-weight for the top job.
    
    English (Mr 22%) is not exactly top calibre as a personality either, so if Ardern can’t roll him then she is unlikely to match his eventual replacement.

Rant alert.

So, there’s me, trundling along past a couple of Landcorp farms yesterday and I started to think about the irony in the bimbo’s grand plan for agriculture. Landcorp, I would guess is far and away the largest corporate farmer in the land (followed also I expect, collectively at least, by the Maori Incorporations).

Landcorp; which entity implemented a program of deforestation and dairy conversion of epic proportions in the glorious reign of helen I and just in time to avoid the forestry carbon credit rort. (Another reason that nick smith should be tied up in the village square and have his nuts removed except he doesn’t seem to have any.) This was of course the time during which our gulag’s carbon emissions went through the roof whilst helen I preached the message of love and responsibility for the environment.

So folks, they’ve done it again. Liebour screwed you over the asset sales with the threat to nationalise (was it a couple of $bill?) and now they want to put the big hit on taxpayer value in Landcorp by wacking a carbon tax on the gazillions of bucks that helen I invested in dairy conversions. “Trees to dairy? Go right ahead, I’m busy running the gulag and working on our carbon footprint.”. The miniscule return the poor old taxpayer gets out of Landcorp is about to become even more miniscule. Imagine what we’d have if the Landcorp investment was tossed into the super fund or paid down debt. Why does the NZ taxpayer own a farm? Why did helen I covert to dairy? adern doesn’t appear to be able to connect the dots here but then …

All the other farms in the country of course take a hit on capital value, not just earnings, but that of course is a matter of no concern to comrade adern despite the fact that she is campaigning to own the largest farmer in the land. It might by a matter of concern to Maori but fear not, when they approach jacinda I on point, I’m sure she’ll be able to work out a special deal for them and allow life to continue as before. Perhaps they will be deserving of special treatment for some patronising reason or another; say a 50 year transition into the scheme and a little bag of carbon credits to top up capital value. She could promise to appoint a committee to fix it all.

And then I thought about milky’s typically smart arsey little weasel yesterday in response to gripes about a speculated $200 a head cost per steer (which would likely translate into something like $500 or more per dairy cow) and rylands’ very interesting comment that the technology doesn’t yet exist to deal with these emissions (although it’s being worked on – but his point I think, is that we’re a long way away yet). Which then reminded me that given what we read in the gutter press from time to time, some farmers are arsholes and don’t give a stuff about their livestock or the effect they have on their land and those about them. However, 90 % of farmers I know are the complete opposite and some of them are actively pursuing more environmentally efficient production systems and making more money in the process. Never mind, comrade jacinda will just toss them all into the same bag and fuck them all over equally.

We’re a tiny little rock at the bottom of the world. We grow grass. In some regions, up to 70% to 80% of their economies are directly and indirectly dependent upon agriculture. That’s a lot of work for a lot of people. It isn’t feasible to convert to growing lettuces instead of meat and milk. Aside from land not being suitable for cropping, it isn’t an export activity. We couldn’t eat or sell enough of the stuff. Are we going to substitute agro-chemical residues and run-off for nitrogen or are we better to evolve our farming methods along the lines of those who are leading the way, banking carbon in the soil and making more money doing it? Does jacinda I realise just how much carbon is released when paddocks are worked up? Has anyone ever driven over the top of Bombay hill when it was pissing down noticed what’s getting washed away? Miniscule particles of brown stuff that used to be soil 100 years ago before it started getting minced for lettuces every year, year in year out. God knows what it is now but it isn’t soil. Are we going to tax those lettuces? Maybe not, because there can’t possibly be any carbon left in that stuff – whatever it is. Just a vehicle for pollutants. Maybe we could just direct drill – oops, problem is that Europe is hating on glyphosate and residues.

liebour has used farmers as a political football and certainly Key and his government did nothing to get to grips with the competing tensions that are bound up in these issues. Despite his pro-farming stance, his biggest failure was agriculture. He had nine years to make some progress on this and did nothing and now leaves farming at the risk of going cold turkey. There are people in MPI who are pro-farming and understand all this stuff, but they don’t get listened to at Ministerial level. I know of someone who tried to get some traction with the melons on this during the gulag years, naively thinking they would be receptive. No, think again, farming bad, full stop.

And let’s not also forget what happens when a forest is logged. Run-off for years – rivers of it, just like when adern is going to build angry’s 100,000 houses. But forestry is good and housing is good and with the money left over from gouging farmers, Councils can afford to treat their sewage properly instead of adding to the problem. Goof can stop pouring raw shit into the Waitemata Harbour and Horizons can stop letting shit go into the the Manawatu. All good; the farmers will pay (depending upon the colour of your skin no doubt).

None of this concerns toothy. Swags of unemployed are a good things. The missing million voters are actually working at the moment but this cunning plan can turn them into liebour-voting beneficiaries.

All the other farms in the country of course take a hit on capital value, not just earnings, but that of course is a matter of no concern to comrade adern despite the fact that she is campaigning to own the largest farmer in the land. It might by a matter of concern to Maori but fear not, when they approach jacinda I on point, I’m sure she’ll be able to work out a special deal for them and allow life to continue as before. Perhaps they will be deserving of special treatment for some patronising reason or another; say a 50 year transition into the scheme and a little bag of carbon credits to top up capital value. She could promise to appoint a committee to fix it all.

And then I thought about milky’s typically smart arsey little weasel yesterday in response to gripes about a speculated $200 a head cost per steer (which would likely translate into something like $500 or more per dairy cow) and rylands’ very interesting comment that the technology doesn’t yet exist to deal with these emissions (although it’s being worked on – but his point I think, is that we’re a long way away yet). Which then reminded me that given what we read in the gutter press from time to time, some farmers are arsholes and don’t give a stuff about their livestock or the effect they have on their land and those about them. However, 90 % of farmers I know are the complete opposite and some of them are actively pursuing more environmentally efficient production systems and making more money in the process. Never mind, comrade jacinda will just toss them all into the same bag and fuck them all over equally.

We’re a tiny little rock at the bottom of the world. We grow grass. In some regions, up to 70% to 80% of their economies are directly and indirectly dependent upon agriculture. That’s a lot of work for a lot of people. It isn’t feasible to convert to growing lettuces instead of meat and milk. Aside from land not being suitable for cropping, it isn’t an export activity. We couldn’t eat or sell enough of the stuff. Are we going to substitute agro-chemical residues and run-off for nitrogen or are we better to evolve our farming methods along the lines of those who are leading the way, banking carbon in the soil and making more money doing it? Does jacinda I realise just how much carbon is released when paddocks are worked up? Has anyone ever driven over the top of Bombay hill when it was pissing down noticed what’s getting washed away? Miniscule particles of brown stuff that used to be soil 100 years ago before it started getting minced for lettuces every year, year in year out. God knows what it is now but it isn’t soil. Are we going to tax those lettuces? Maybe not, because there can’t possibly be any carbon left in that stuff – whatever it is. Just a vehicle for pollutants. Maybe we could just direct drill – oops, problem is that Europe is hating on glyphosate and residues.

liebour has used farmers as a political football and certainly Key and his government did nothing to get to grips with the competing tensions that are bound up in these issues. Despite his pro-farming stance, his biggest failure was agriculture. He had nine years to make some progress on this and did nothing and now leaves farming at the risk of going cold turkey. There are people in MPI who are pro-farming and understand all this stuff, but they don’t get listened to at Ministerial level. I know of someone who tried to get some traction with the melons on this during the gulag years, naively thinking they would be receptive. No, think again, farming bad, full stop.

And let’s not also forget what happens when a forest is logged. Run-off for years – rivers of it, just like when adern is going to build angry’s 100,000 houses. But forestry is good and housing is good and with the money left over from gouging farmers, Councils can afford to treat their sewage properly instead of adding to the problem. Goof can stop pouring raw shit into the Waitemata Harbour and Horizons can stop letting shit go into the the Manawatu. All good; the farmers will pay (depending upon the colour of your skin no doubt).

None of this concerns toothy. Swags of unemployed are a good things. The missing million voters are actually working at the moment but this cunning plan can turn them into liebour-voting beneficiaries.

  Well Hugh I think this is the best news I’ve seen in a very long time (last night excepted !).
  If the CEOs are worried about housing costs in Auckland then the next step in their thinking is to ask themselves ” How important is it to have the business in Auckland ?” Many of the honest ones will come around to thinking that with modern communication etc. it isn’t needed at all or maybe the main part of it isn’t . Then they will look at the obvious solution –shift out of Auckland.
  I’ve been saying for a few years that is at least part of the answer to Auckland’s housing situation and other transport infrastructure issues.

  I think historical monuments need to be placed in context. Nixon’s troops murdered civilians when they overran the village of Rangioawhia. That doesn’t mean the monument should be pulled down.
  I wouldn’t put it in the same category as 1920s monuments to Robert E Lee, erected to commemorate the triumph of Jim Crow and segregation.

    Regarding whether Nixon’s troops did kill civilians, there is the question of how do you tell who is a civilian when you are fighting folk without a uniformed army?
    
    Were – or are now – women exempt as targets when many, most, or all of them fight alongside their menfolk and might finish off your wounded comrades?
    
    Presumably, there were killings of pakeha-settler civilians, too, in the fighting over the decades of colonial war.
    
    The thing is to look forward. In a century or two that will be easy, because nearly all New Zealanders will be part-Maori and part-European, and many will also be part-Asian. Intermarriage will see to that.
    
    In the meantime, “cleansing” of historical monuments can quickly get out of hand.
    
    Where do you draw the line? Should the British want the remainder of Hadrian’s Wall destroyed because it might offend north-eastern Scots who are descended from Picts?
    
    Should Mayan stone ruins be destroyed because these show remind current locals that their ancestors were heavily into human sacrifice?
    
    Should the Great Wall of China come down to assuage the feelings of descendants of the Mongolians and Manchu it was designed to keep out?

      Archaeological sites – Yes
      It’s likely that such changes would simply follow the prevailing mood of a community. Toppling the statues of a fallen dictator would appear to be commonplace. There are always some complications – some people sincerely believe that statues of Robert E Lee in the South merely recognise his military genius (debatable), while others see the erection of such statues in the decades after the Civil War as celebrating the re-imposition of white supremacy.
      So, I’m not too fussed about the Nixon statue. It would be different if some group of crazies were proposing a new statue to commemorate NZ’s ancient ‘Celtic’ settlers, or some such nonsense.

On the day that Bill English was confirmed as Prime Minister following John Key’s resignation, I had the good fortune to be a guest of a friend who had Koru Club membership, and was enjoying a breakfast in the lounge. As I went up to the buffet, I found myself alongside none other than Bill English himself. I said hello and took the liberty of congratulating him on his upcoming promotion, expecting an acknowledgement and not much else, as it was going to be a busy day for the man.

I got a very firm handshake in response to my offered hand, and then I was engaged in conversation for about 5 minutes with a man who was clearly interested in my views. I had recently returned from a fairly high profile international event, and Bill was genuinely interested in who I was and what I had done. He was warm, engaging, sincere and honest. Had it not been 8.00 in the morning, I imagine we would have shared a beer! I walked away from that encounter quite happy in the knowledge that he was about to be our PM, and I hope he will remain so. As I will be overseas on election day I have already exercised my franchise accordingly.

On leaving the lounge and heading to my aircraft, I passed former Labour Leader David Cunliffe heading from his flight to collect his luggage. He was on his own, and didn’t appear to wish to engage with anyone.

I think he was feeling sorry for being a man again!

    Eh, what? How is one man saying he feels ashamed of being a man going to do a damn thing about addressing family violence? More to the point, have YOU done anything to help stem the tide?
    
    Today I was a facilitator in a three hour workshop in addressing the root cause of family, partner and domestic violence, including sexual assault. This is the third such session I have facilitated, and will not be the last.
    
    As for family violence being solely men against women, you can knock that rubbish on the head. Men are just as much victims of family, domestic and partner violence, and to mislabel it as male against female marginalises all the victims of abuse such as male on male, female on female and female on male. There is already a huge stigma attached to being a victim of domestic violence, and your outdated attitude, and Mr Cunliffes, just makes it harder for people of ALL genders who need help to ask for it!
    
    So, GoVege, what did YOU do to address NZ’s shameful record on domestic violence today?

      I haven’t done much today against violence I must admit, but I have dobbed in many violent men to the cops. (The only thing I have found to work.)
      Mr Cunliffe was appealing to his fellow men to “man up” and start protecting their women, not terrorising them.
      What is wrong with that?
      Most of the appeals to men to curb their violence seem to come from women. (NOW we know why.)
      Please tell me what you reckon are the “root causes” of violence?
      I believe it is a learned behaviour.
      I have met many vicious women in my life. One who beat me up went on to beat an 8 month pregnant teenager and kick her in the belly.
      BUT a violent man is far more dangerous than a violent woman.
      It is extremely rare for such women to stalk or kill their victims, like violent men do.
      Please explain how my attitude is “outdated” and stops victims/ perpetrators from asking for help.

        OK, sticks and stones .. and all that – but in a relationship where the man tries to keep the peace, sometimes an aggressive woman does not need to be overly physical to be abusive – a hard slap in the face and a torrent of abuse can be more damaging.
        I know – it happened to me – but fortunately I was able to control my anger
        and over a period of 2 or 4 years restore our relationship to what it had been.
        The sad fact is that it stemmed from sexual abuse when she was a child, and it came out many years later.
        If I ever hear of a man sexually abusing children – especially young girls – I would have no compunction in killing the bastard – the effects do not materialise till many years later..

        Women can be very abusive, especially verbally, and very vindictive and devious.
        A torrent of verbal abuse can be more debilitating than a few shoves or slaps.
        It’s hard to live with but you can usually walk away until the other person is more reasonable.
        When the other person is much stronger than you, you probably don’t have that option.
        Also, the element of fear in unequal, physically violent relationships can be downright terrifying.
        I’m glad you were able to heal your relationship.
        Unlike many in the family violence field, I believe many if not most abusive relationships can be saved, usually by the application of tough-love/ consequences.
        Wonder if we’re going to hear back from ROWIWOR?

        Hi GoVege, thanks for your reply. As a man who is standing up to do something to address domestic partner violence, I have discovered many truths underlying the statistics.
        
        Sadly, one all pervasive truth is that there is a great deal of shame in being a victim. Although it is NEVER the victims fault, the controlling and abusive nature of the relationship will always lead the victim to ask is it was something they did wrong, or something they said, if only I tried harder, the sad usual refrain.
        
        Any woman who is the victim will tell you how hard it is to reach out for help. For a MALE victim of intimate partner violence to ask for help is harder by a considerable order of magnitude.
        
        The abuse of men in a domestic relationship happens. To push on with the myth that somehow domestic violence is only male against female is wrong. It doesn’t stop there.
        
        A woman in New Zealand cannot be charged with rape. In NZ Law, rape is defined as penetration of the vagina by a penis without the consent of the woman. Any other form of penetration will be charged as Unlawful Sexual Connection. This stems from archaic laws on the books.
        
        How do we stop it?
        
        We need to educate our young people on what constitutes a respectful relationship. The average age that a young New Zealander accesses pornography for the first time in NZ is 11! If we continue to not talk about it and let the sexual education of our children continue to happen through on-line porn, and the hyper sexualisation and objectification of potential sexual partners, then we may as well give up now.
        
        We have to stop being ignorant about this. Start teaching our children what a healthy respectful relationship looks like, so they can objectively look at all the awful examples in our media and make a critical judgement.
        
        It’s going to be a hard job, herculean infact, but the payoff will be just as big, and much more valuable!

        HI ROWIWOR. Thanks for your reply but I feel you are ignoring the elephant in the room: that the vast majority of serious domestic violence (and rape) is male against female. Of course there are violent bullying women but they do far less harm than males do. They rarely kill or maim their partners. In Fiji 70 women a day are beaten unconscious by their husbands and 1 is disabled for life. Women, not men.
        We have thousands of men from sexist cultures living here now, most of whom continue their attitudes here.
        Yes, it’s definitely about “respectful relationships” but how can you have respect when significant numbers of males are taught that females are their inferiors and must obey them?
        I would be interested to know if you deal with the victims or perpetrators of violence.
        In my experience, all the talk in the world will rarely stop a bullying person (of either gender).
        Either they grow out of it, or the long arm of the law needs to teach them that there is a force superior to them that will lock them up until they change their ways.

    I’ve met him several times since, and heard him speak publicly. But one time stands out; a business lunch in Whanganui around 18 months ago, when he talked about what’s so important with his social investment approach.
    
    This was a very different Bill English; animated and passionate, because he was prepared to try a radical way of delivering social policy. He was proposing something bold and innovative, and if it works, transformational.
    
    Bill English is a decent bloke, who wants the best for New Zealand and for all New Zealanders. Kelvin Davis may disdainfully call him a rock, but he’s OUR rock, and on that rock is built our economic recovery. He’s got my vote.

As per Tarquin North above, good critique of Bryan Bruce’s doco on housing last night by Duncan Greive in the NZ Herald.

A few weeks ago I said, tongue in cheek that the election campaign proper isn’t the real thing until Nicky Hager produces an expose book and Bryan Bruce a “non-political” documentary in the week of the election. Well, yes, at least Bruce waited until the week before this time! 😉

Pity, as some of Bruce’s questions were valid, but the “let’s go back to the pre-neo-lib 1970s” is not the answer to everything, indeed many things in social policy. So if we are going to have an “adult conversation” as Bruce implies, then mention the cost of housing in the 1970s – massive amounts of taxes went into propping up the system of State loans, along with high tax rate – up to 66%. Plus migration was lower, and other than Pacific islanders for the factories, relatively monocultural, which made social cohesion and a one-size-fits-all social policy easier (although as Greive points out, Maori struggled then too).

I say that as someone who has revised his opinion of Rob Muldoon, and who considers him now a very capable administrator, indeed the best we ever had of that 1935-84 fortress economy model. And yes, I also agree that for all of its benefit, the market cannot provide housing for everyone – there will always be some who fall between the cracks due to life’s circumstances and/or personal deficits. Which is why we have a public health, education and social welfare system, so that no one, in theory, should miss out.

But is is bloody disingenuous for Bruce to be saying the state has bugged out of housing. State houses still exist, indeed the present government has done a good job IMHO of updating the asset (one person in a 4 bedroom house in Glen Innes is not a good use of the state’s assets)

…and a hell of a lot of our taxes go to accommodation supplements and payments for those on a low income.

        Whose presence of course pre-dates the arrival of Muslims in those countries. Much of what is now Turkey was occupied by Greeks and related peoples. The “Turks” as such invaded in surges across an extended time starting I think in the 12 century. Constantinople itself didn’t fall to them until 1453, and the last remnants of Byzantine rule a little later.

  Anyone with a passing knowledge of events in Burma over the years will know that the military there has an appalling record of mistreatment of minority peoples.
  There are numerous refugee camps along the Thai border with people who have escaped persecution in that wretched country. Thailand doesn’t want them either so they are stuck there; stateless and unable to go backwards or forwards.
  The Rohingya have been in Burma for generations. They have been set upon by the majority Buddhists for years now, not just in the last few months.
  A few years ago boatloads of refugees set off and had the misfortune to land in Thailand. They were prompted towed back out to sea to die.
  The Burmese government claims they have burned down their own villages. BBC reporter Jonathon Head, long time correspondent in the region, was taken on a tour of the area and saw villages being set alight as police watched on long after the residents had been chased away.
  Any time the BBC or other Asian media prints stories about these atrocities the comments sections are inundated with rants justifying the military action.

I notice that 1 news had a big story last night about young people as young as nine being sexually abused and used in trafficking. Sex trafficking is a world-wide scourge and a problem that no one thing will fix but I don’t think New Zealand decriminalizing prostitution helped. Looking at places like Amsterdam, it has only made it worse.

Coerced prostitution is one of the primary forms of exploitation that trafficked women and girls are subjected to in the developed world. Legalized prostitution allows traffickers to hide victims in plain sight as consenting sex workers. Legal or decriminalized pandering makes a portion of a sex trafficking victims venture legitimate. In recent decades, several countries have changed their policies and laws on prostitution. Because there is a positive correlation between commercial sex work, human trafficking and organized crime.

In 2000, the Netherlands, historically one of the most hospitable countries for commercial sex, formalized its prostitution policy by lifting its ban on brothels. At the time, advocates felt that regulating brothels would provide better protection to vulnerable women, particularly migrant trafficking victims. Unfortunately, regulating brothels was not enough to stymie the impact of global human trafficking on prostitution in the Netherlands. Instead, licensed brothels became a magnet for human trafficking.

  All with the help and approval of the girls’ mums.
  I personally know a mum of 11 who did this.
  (She also took her babies and young kids on burglaries to give an impression of innocence. )

  Well to be fair I was surprised by this. My wife runs a business on the side baking, and uses approx. 20 blocks of butter a week. She also uses the Mainland Gold stuff as it is better for baking (less water content). I was shocked to see it at Countdown, Pak N Save and New World for around $8 per block.

    I think you will find that the usual “middle man” ie the supermarkets might be involved in this. The owners of supermarkets, and I particularly quote Pak N Save owners in this, make massive amounts of money. One owner before he left NZ had property overseas, massive launch, brand new holiday home and built a massive home in NZ. I do not know many farmers who could claim that, my parents certainly couldn’t when they farmed for 40 years and they were considered good farmers.

What the lefties haven’t grasped and why their campaign is floundering is that the majority of NZers are hard working, home owners. They have worked, scrimped, saved and made there way in the world. Basically they don’t give a damn about the losers and bludgers of society. They have no time for mothers of 9 sleeping in cars, mainly because there is no need to be a mother of 9. They don’t believe in child poverty because benefits are generous plus working for families plus accom allowances…all paid out of their taxes. They are saying enough’s enough, get off your backside, get educated, get a job, stop breeding. They are indignant that they will have to pay more tax for these losers, and they are entitled to feel that way. I think most NZers are also really generous when they see genuine need, though.

There are some people in society who are not capable of making decisions for themselves, so have had that right taken away from them. For example: prisoners, people in dementia care, those of very feeble mind.

Then there are those who have had their children taken away because they are not able to make good enough decisions for their kids.

If you are not even able to make good decisions for your self and your kids, then why the hell should you be making decisions for broader society?

News just to hand, in an obvious sympathy vote grab, Taxinda’s grandad was released from hospital at 11:30pm. Oh the outrage!! Anyone who has spent any time in hospital will tell you the only thing on their minds is go home. Seems he “wanted to stay”…I call BS on that. Cynical sympathy vote grab right there after bad poll results.

In other breaking news, in a new Labour hit job, National MP Jian Yang was “investigated” by the SIS. His CV is well known and that he was a former intelligence officer and “probably” a member of the communist party. Seems odd Labour would be concerned with communist party members unless they had defected to the other side. Then and only then would they be concerned. Did Phil Twatford fly to China to dig the dirt? Not seen him at all in Te Atatu recently unlike Alfred Ngaro eagerly waiving hoardings on busy junctions this and last week! What a shabby outfit Labour run when all they can come up with is this.

  Lots of people get bumped off elective surgery waiting lists in the face of emergencies. Think heart transplant patients, they have to be done when a heart becomes available, my husband was in hospital waiting surgery and this happened to him. It is life. Emergencies take precedence.
  OR does labour want to have empty wards and beds just waiting for “grand Dad” to turn up. Staff waiting round doing nothing.
  Is that a better use of the tax dollar, inf act to achieve that would require yet more of Jacinda’s tax dollars, lets do this.
  The $11 billion dollar hole talked about by Mr Joyce is perhaps a little on the light side. All labour’s numerous wishes require money, provided by the taxpayer some how. If there isn’t enough in the kitty presently it has to be found somewhere and that is from the tax payer.
  It is deciding how best to spend the money the tax payer pays a balance between collecting enough without the taxpayer finding ways not to pay tax, The higher the burden of tax the more people find ways of avoiding it.
  Priorities, balance and fairness.
  Nothing that Labour is putting forward.

I think there is enough of a ground swell around their poorly thought out strategy of a “working group” to put them on he back foot. I’m at Vanguard Military School – having just faced one the most stirring hakas in a while – I’m going to tweet some video so it can be brought into the blog that way.
It was very moving and National Leader Bill English was visibly choking back a few tears as he was presented with a stack of letters from each student about how Vanguard had changed their lives.
These are kids who were not achieving at state schools, had challenges including drugs and alcohol at a very young age and were now thriving.
English laid a direct challenge to any political party wanting to get rid of charter schools (Labour) and come tell the children that to their faces. It was all quite genuine and those moments can be few and far between on the campaign trail

On the one hand we have, Bill English, perhaps New Zealand’s greatest ever finance minister, navigating us through the GFC and the Canterbury earthquakes. Perhaps one of the greatest finance ministers in the OECD today. He is a smart, authentic, and a genuine good guy with a great family. He’s solid, reliable, and dependable.

On the other hand we have this bimbo whose never worked a real job in her entire life (even her degree in Communication Studies —a nonsense discipline that simply teaches people how to enhance and leverage charisma and market themselves, was obviously chosen with a career in politics in mind), who is only good for spouting platitudes and feel good catchphrases.

This should be a friggin no brainer.

Substance over celebrity.

We have the choice of either becoming an exciting high tech glittering south pacific powerhouse, integrated with all the best that is going on round the world, that attracts the best from around the world, or a gloomy grey fetid socialist swamp populated by cynical, resentful, and non-productive troglodytes (cause I can guarantee there will be an exodus of our best and brightest if this skank gets in).

  Indeed, he took a huge “loss” on the chin, became a Deputy PM after being a Leader. (Not many do that) and continued working for the good of NZ, managing the country through the GFC and earthquakes and having the country in a position where there is money to be spent. They could have spent it all in the last budget so the coffers were bare for the election. But no that is the sort of thing that labour has a history of doing.
  I see no valid reason for changing our Government being lead under Bill English.

She really is saying she will consider a tax on capital gains, land, water, and cow farts. That is all that the ad from National is about. It is not at all personal. It’s an ad raising a genuine criticism of her policy with a little bit of humour. So she resorts to nastiness and name calling. And then she goes on to tell the interviewer she is running a relentlessly positive campaign?! Enough bullshit Ardern. Tell us what your taxes will be.

A group teaches have put suggestion to the next Government on how to fix the teacher shortage in Auckland and said they don’t belong to any outside group. But how could anyone take them seriously when one of them was Linda Stuart President of the Teachers Union. One of the suggestions were clearing of Student Loan so they will be debt free and be able to purchase their own home, plus a increase in teachers wages.

    Some forms of Buddhism are quite militant. The from from West Tibet, a land of people akin to the Mongolians, and shared by the people of Mongolia, can be fairly bloodthirsty. The Burmese version of Buddhism may be related.

  Sure is Johnboy but according to Aljazeera they crossed over to Burma previously from Bangladesh and the Burmese are now chasing them back. There no real information as media can not get into the country. It’s a bit like North Korea who only show the nicest people to the camera. Or little solders all in a row with their rockets.

Jacindas story. Grandad discharged at 11-30pm by hospital and had no way home.

Alternate story leaked. Grandad hadn’t been admitted so couldn’t have been discharged. Was at hospital but wouldn’t leave. Family member with him discussed with staff the possibility of staying overnight instead of making the 1 hr trip home.

Just my 2 cents but the reason hospitals are full is because people like this treat it like a fucking hotel.

I’ve taken little notice, but tonight stumbled on this on Youtube. Some of the people who believe this are Maori. There are several of these videos….

Gingas and tall white folk here before the Maori. who gave Maori the tradition of facial tattoos.
