  National are the only sensible choice.
  
  They have more than tripled the rate of immigration into NZ to ensure that NZ business can stay competitive by not having to pay higher wages.
  
  They told all those wicked parents who liked to beat their children to get lost.
  
  They have employed Devoy to hunt down all the bigots in this country.
  
  They have ensured that no Maori Tribe get’s left behind by ensuring all historical settlements are topped up if Finlayson gives a bigger settlement to the latest claimant.
  
  They have ensured closer links to China whether that be by accepting money to change our flag, employing their spooks or permitting the sale, unseen, of our housing stock to faceless Chinese investors.
  
  Despite being elected on a ticket of change, they have kept all of Labours flagship policies.
  
  They have helped create an economic boom with record low interest rates meaning that people can take on more debt and boost up Asset Prices. This strategy is in no way similar to a Ponzi.

    Regardless of whose political ‘watch’ it was when the pipeline was laid, it beggars belief that such a critical piece of the country’s strategic and communications infrastructure can come to grief in such a mishap. However accidental the direct cause may have been. It comes close to qualifying for the dreaded ‘third world’ description.
    
    Ultimately the security of the fuel pipeline to Auckland rests with Refining NZ, the Marsden Point owner and operator of the pipeline. But this event is greater in its impact on New Zealand, its people, businesses and economy than what can simply be fixed through an insurance policy. I would expect any incoming Government to formalise an ongoing interest in the integrity and security of this particular supply line and other infrastructure of comparable national importance.

And those responsible don’t get held to account.Lundy is fortunate to have had access to the Privy Council. That’s now denied to New Zealanders. We now have a closed and perfectly hermetically sealed justice system.

He is completely correct, and finally in October the people of New Zealand should see how. This is an epic injustice promoted and defended by all current New Zealand politicians by default. Let us see who deals with this and how.

If you want the airline to put you up in a hotel, feed you, transfer you and generally insulate you from the consequences to travel disruption… then tick the ‘YES – I WANT INSURANCE’ option and pay the few extra dollars.

If you want a lower cost travel, don’t tick that option. You assume the risk, and you lose the right to bitch about the airline.

It would help if the media asked about insurance selection before publishing the inevitable hard-luck stories.

  Totally agree with you. I am a travel broker and it drives me nuts when people say no they don’t want insurance. The extra few hundred you may spend is well worth it as the situation this week shows.

    Garbage. Insurance always costs more than what you get back, and should only be purchased when you can’t afford the loss. It is far better to self-insure and just pay for any issues that arise. Anecdotally; in the 200-300 commercial flights I have made, mostly international, I have never needed flight insurance.

        If you don’t insure when you can afford the loss then even if your luck runs out at some point, all the money you have saved by not buying insurance over the years will more than cover it.
        
        The problem with travel insurance is that overseas medical costs can be huge so you need cover for that, but insurers tend to bundle all kinds of other coverage as well so you end up paying for stuff you don’t want.

      I have travelled most of my adult life and never had an insurance claim but still buy one.
      Then a few years ago my wife’s eye went in China – we flew fast to Singapore and straight into their magnificent Eye Hospital for serious operation and four days hotel. Wonderful service at a cost.
      Thanks local Insurer – not a murmur – $12,000 fully paid.

      I never insure flying locally.. and always insure when flying internationally. It’s not the lost luggage or extra hotel nights that I can’t afford, it’s the gazillions of $$ for airlift/hospital/repatriation if I execute an involuntary dismount from my bike somewhere rocky and expensive.

    Evidently the visa card I use has an insurance provision if I pay for (>50% of the) travel with it.
    Is this kinda thing any different to commercially obtained insurance?
    The only time I have missed a flight was out of USA soon after 9/11 (troops in airport searching everyone) and Emirates bent over backwards and upgraded us … so have never had to claim on insurance.

      Read your policy in detail first before buying and see what is not covered eg re Motor Vehicle excess etc as an example.
      These are not always covered under the Bank Insurance scheme.
      Sorry, read the small print.

    I presume you are talking about travel insurance as opposed to the extra ten bucks or so for an internal flight.
    When I lived in Thailand there was a constant stream of terrible stories of tourists with no insurance getting caught out. People would get wiped out on motorbikes not wearing helmets, spent a week in ICU and the hospital wouldn’t discharge them until the bill was paid. Mum & Dad back home would be raising mortgages . . . . .

      Travel medical insurance is an entirely different kettle of fish. An accident or mishap in the wrong place can cost hundreds of thousands of dollars. For most people that is more than they can easily afford, so always travel with medical insurance.

  I flew Air Asia recently. We taxied out in Auckland and then went straight back –a faulty fuel pump. They thought they could fix quite quickly but no go. We were all got put at hotels ( except those that live in Auckland) , we got meals and a transfer to and from the airport. Had to wait all the next day for the usual evening departure but again meals were provided.
  All done very civilly. Some were a little frustrated they had to wait around for a day but they were all thankful the pilot to the safety first approach.
  You could not get a more low cost air line than Air Asia (for international flights).

Can someone tell me when the media do polls all round the country telling you who has a chance of upsetting National in safe blue seats like the one today in Nelson why are they to scared of doing the same on Winston Peters in Northland. They are quick to give him air time to spew his bullshit blaming of National leaking his Pension over payments without proof but are not prepared to tell us who is leading the polls in NZ First only seat that they hold.

  Indeed, that was a “free” opportunity for Winston Peters to spout forth. A captive audience suggesting that he was going to spill the beans and name “names” of those alleged national party people who had leaked his private information.
  If people are not awake to Winnie by now after that they should be. that is his normal modus operandi.
  Conspiracy, suggestions, smoke and mirrors, never ever any actual proof. He hopes that if he says it enough people will believe and unfortunately there are always those willing to believe.
  I require facts, am always happy to change my opinion based on facts.
  This was classic Winnie, I suppose the only constant thing about Winnie is his behaviour, it never changes, it is always “suggestions” that he knows gullible people wish to believe.

      I think with all these “over payments” Winston Peters, Meteria turei, I think some serious looks at WINZ are necessary.
      What is happening with Meteria’s fraudulent claim for money has she been charged. She admitted it.
      This is the taxpayer’s money, not hers. She stole from us. There is no justification. She can at least afford to pay it back on her large MP salary.

The latest modelling shows it may not be possible to grow green kiwifruit in Te Puke in fifty years time.
It’s time to stop funding these scientists who come up with these predictions of doom and gloom.
I bet the climate will be the same in fifty years time and kiwifruit will still be growing in Te Puke.
Millions will now be spent funding pratts who will try and find answers that are not there.

    meh – you’ve a science background don’t you, cmm? From a evolutionary perspective, I’d imagine that the ability of a species to adapt to changes in their environment was heavily dependent on the speed of that change.
    I’ve no idea how that applies specifically to tuatara in the here and now, but I imagine it’s been the general principle throughout the earth’s history, no?

      Sure, there’s that “rate of change” argument, but it falls very flat very quickly.
      
      What happens when we get El Niño events etc? We get multiple degree changes over a single year.
      
      If the tuatara can cope with that then they can surely cope with a 2 degree change over 50+ years.

        Perhaps, but I imagine it’s a little more complicated than that. For example, a relatively long lived species might be able to deal with a temporary disruption to a season or two’s breeding due to drought, famine, or climate, but a sustained change might be a different story? Just thinking out loud.
        I also imagine that species’ ability to “ride out” environmental changes depends on other factors such as its numbers and range too.

        Don, just for the hell of it, I decided to bother looking up something about tuatara (I know, I know, that’s not standard KB protocol), and you’re a bit of the mark there (at least according to Wikipedia, caveat emptor).
        
        They remain active at temperatures as low as 5 °C (41 °F), while temperatures over 28 °C (82 °F) are generally fatal. The optimal body temperature for the tuatara is from 16 to 21 °C (61 to 70 °F), the lowest of any reptile. The body temperature of tuatara is lower than that of other reptiles, ranging from 5.2–11.2 °C (41.4–52.2 °F) over a day, whereas most reptiles have body temperatures around 20 °C (68 °F).     Previous interglacial (125k years ago) was at least 1-2°C warmer than current, with sea levels about 5-6m higher owing to Greenland melt. We are in the middle of an ice age that started about 2.6million years ago with brief 10-15k year warm interglacial periods like the Holocene roughly every 100k years. Miraculously all species currently alive survived these changes, and the frequent rapid changes in environment are the reason that humans have evolved to become the dominant species.

        I have always stated that warming is just a part of climate change, which has been happening since creation. I do think that man has contributed slightly to it, but is certainly not a causative factor – neither is CO2 – the world is greening because of it.

When National came to office under John key the median house in Auckland cost 6.4 times median household income, he said. “It’s now a “stratospheric” ten times.”

A lady we spoke to yesterday said she was going to vote for Jacinda because she was a young pretty woman.
We suggest to her that the Labour Party, which is for now just Jacinda, was still the same left wing screw you tax you party except it had a young communist ill educated young woman who had never had a real job outside the political trough.
She hadn’t realised this and would rethink her vote – probably back to Winston in his dottage though.
Suggestested she consider a good family quiet man with strong moral codes in Bill English.

Here’s a question that I hope someone can help me with..

… and just for the sake of my question, let’s assume that everyone agrees that it’s ok for a party leader to go into an election with noone knowing whether or not they may need time off their parliamentary responsibilities so that they can give birth and care for a baby.

So my question is: what would be the similarity or difference between the above scenario and that of a party leader who might go into an election when it is reported that he or she intends to resign six months after the election, due to the very unfortunate presence of early onset dementia?

Saw her talking to some University Students the other day – “They don’t care about us” “Our Generation” blah blah
Then in Stuff today she makes some weird comment about “Because I’m so Young…”

A quick Google sees that she is actually only a couple of years younger than I am.
I consider idealistic young University Students with no life experience to be on a different freaking planet from me (I’m not having a go at Students as such- I spent four years at Otago)
But I don’t consider them ‘My Generation’ at all.

  I am now of the age where I consider 37 young, but I did a little rewind on my life and looked at what my wife and I had achieved by 37 compared to what she has achieved.
  
  Heck, we’d probably chalked up as much experience as her by the age of 25.
  
  I’m sure the same would go for just about every professional person out there.

    If she was a farmer she would have fed millions of people.
    
    If she was a man in wartime she’d have been old enough to be a company commander making life and death decisions over hundreds of people.

I was in the lions den yesterday. Lunch with some Friends who vote Labour. I had taken the precaution of emailing them the video of the commie comrade prior to going there. That set the tone.

Basically the group did not really worry about our future apart from some polluted rivers and too many dairy farms.

They just believe that it’s their turn to be the Govt. They were banging on about John Key as if he was still the PM. One thing they agreed was that Comrade Bimbo will be short term if she gets in as she definitely wants to start a family.

Everyone agreed the Govt coffers were healthy and that was good for what they wanted to spend it on.

The greens were a problem as they were considered to be fruit loops and not the ideal coalition partner.

Recently I was with some National voting friends and the contrast with the group yesterday was obvious. My labour mates just wanted to spend up and have a good time. They did not see the need to have an army etc as we are out of a war zone down here.

National friends were concerned about the future, immigration etc and wanted to strengthen the armed forces.

Reminds me of squirels storing their food for winter whilst others eat it all and starve.

  That’s the reason I’ve changed my opinion on having a future “sensible” National government that wants to inch us back into surplus so that debt can be paid down and/or tax cuts given.
  
  It just doesn’t work if the Opposition don’t agree with that philosophy, and simply view such surpluses as pissathon money. In that case, what’s the point in building them up?
  
  All we’re ever going to get from here on will be either a Cullen-type left-wing NZ where huge surpluses simply sit there because even they can’t stuff more into health, education and welfare (and the money certainly won’t be handed back to the taxpayer because they’ll just fritter it away) – or this type of unthinking Leftism where it all just gets spent on whatever takes their fancy, irrespective of whether it really does any good.

    I was reading an article that came from their website about teachers affinity (or lack of) with National Standards. Foolishly I thought it was going to be a balanced piece based on where I linked to it from… Yes foolishly, almost exclusively it was teachers moaning about how bad National Standards is for the poor little darlings… Of course they shot themselves in the foot when they went on to mention that many of the kids are below the line in National Standards and that forces the teachers to focus on reading writing and maths…
    Without National Standards these kids would not be identified until they reached NCEA when it is too late to give them the support to achieve.

Apparently as she passed James Shaw, when he was coming onto the platform, they exchanged High-Fives. That suggests there is some collusion between them. What’s the bet she ‘pulled the plug’ on the CGT only after she got Shaw to make it a ‘bottom line’ in his coalition demands. In that way, Labour cannot be criticised for going back on the ‘Captain’s Call’….

He said the reason we allow our country to be sold off is because we are small we don’t have a lot to trade with.
Well I find that most disturbing.
Our land is our most precious resource and our country is precious as a country , full stop.
To allow big countries to buy our land and houses puts our own people at a considerable disadvantage.Billions of people against a wee population.
This is nothing but a recipe to sell out our country to the highest bidder.The results can be seen with what is happening right now.
Sorry but free trade agreements should rule out our property as part of negotiations.

Australia’s coal exports are bubbling at $US85 a ton. The trade is so busy that Australia’s own coal-powered electricity plants are being squeezed to get enough rail transport to bring in their fuel. It makes you wonder whether NZ was over-hasty in flogging off Solid Energy’s assets.

Australia still needs to diversify exports from the “resource curse”, also known as the “paradox of plenty” or the “Dutch disease”. (New Zealand suffers from a similar one with milk products). In the meantime, though, Australia’s solidly on the right side in international trade.

Solid Energy did make some spectacular mistakes, such as its dream of turning farmlands of Southland into opencast pits of lignite for a huge synthetic diesel industry. However, Solid Energy’s coal exports from the West Coast provided useful foreign exchange to NZ in its decades of balance of payments deficits. Solid Energy’s pioneer defragging work to extract coal-seam gas at Huntly could also have been a real benefit to NZ.

Makes you wonder also about the politicians and the analyst mob who led to Solid Energy assets being sold off dirt cheap. There were so many pompous commentators with zero knowledge of mining, so much “told-you-so” smugness from the Greens and the Blue-Greens, and so much political point making – “this is what happens with State enterprise”.

In the meantime, the overly quick retreat from coal has left the South Island West Coast’s economy roughed up as badly as that of West Virginia, where Trump drew attention to the plight of mining communities.

However much Energy Minister Collins may want to spin it the disruption to the fuel pipeline is a disaster for international travel.
A report in 2012 warned that this was on the cards, but it’s slipped her memory.
With luck regular petrol supplies will not be disrupted this week & who cares after that, although soaring prices may be uncomfortable.
Apparently it’s not realistic to construct a backup fuel line. It’s far too expensive, but I’m not sure why there isn’t adequate storage to cope with a fortnight’s disruption.

  The Auckland airport fuel shortage is not a “disaster”. Last I checked, no one has died. In fact, most flights are still operating. Having your 12-hour flight become a 14-hour flight because of an added fuel stop sucks, but it’s hardly the end of the world.

    Labour will no doubt want to nationalise the pipeline because a government department would say they can fix it within a day. But not before there is a royal commission who will appoint a board of enquiry, who will hire investigators. Winston and David will be the first to look into the broken pipe and Massy university will build a pipe robot. Three years latter the pipe will still not be fixed. Cost $11 million.

  No show Taxinda with the face that launched 1000 chips and TV ran out of film it seems from only 44 seconds coverage.
  One speaker reminded the crowd that “vegans need farmers too.”
  Interesting that is was such a peaceful protest that had the air of community participation about it. Go Morrinsville. What a sad opportunity missed for a popular feature article.

LABOUR knew about the vulnerable fuel pipeline back in 2005. What was their plan. Lots of land involved in any new constructed pipeline. Pity about the bastardised RMA Act wanted a simpler one, national allowd maori more say, that will not help here even if in the national interest, still I suppose money can change hands for the subterranean taniwha.

  She was completely sanctimonious about her claim of Electoral Commission staff being racist. The staff member told the guy he would have to change to another queue to access the staff member with the Maori Electoral roll.
  
  I assume the reason it is more efficient to not have all polling staff swapping between the general electoral roll and separate Maori electoral roll when matching names. That only creates confusion and wastes time for everyone else waiting to be checked. Talk about trying to create an issue where there is none.

There may not be a physical gulag but a metaphorical version was displayed last time they were in power…remember Clark calling John Campbell ‘a little creep’.
